Re: [Felvtalk] OT: blind deaf cat
Gloria, I took in a blind and deaf cat a couple of years ago (I think she could see shadows, maybe)- she was 18, and her owner was moving to Chicago and didn't want to be bothered with her- she was going to be put to sleep if no one took her, so of course Crazy Cat Lady here came to the rescue. I kept Smudge in her own room for a couple of months, and then let her out in the rest of the house. She got around fine and none of my other cats bothered her (well, my 16 year old cat Pokey would hiss at her. Of course, Smudge couldn't hear her hissing, haha). They usually moved out of the way when they saw her coming. She learned where the beds were and made herself right at home. From: Gloria B. We think it's just because of the changes in his life, that he just doesn't know what's going on and if he needs to defend himself. I haven't had a blind or deaf cat before. Does anyone know of a rescue that will take a blind-deaf cat? I found one in North Carolina, but I'm in Arkansas. I live in Black Mountain NC and would be more than happy to give him a home. I'm really not too familiar with how things are done here but I have a male that I rescued from outside that has feline leukemia and I keep him separated from my other cats. I'm sure he would be happy for the company. Let me know if you think it might work. Re: [Felvtalk] Losses
Thank you Sharyl. This morning I had to take my old sweetie to the vet to be put to sleep. He was 17 years old and had been dealing with kidney failure for over a year. As all of us know, making the decision to put a pet to sleep is one of the most difficult decisions we ever have to make, but my wonderful vet helped me decide when he said keeping an old terminally ill cat alive is more for the owner than for the cat, who has no quality of life left. Beezer was a stray when I rescued him in 1993 and he had a long happy life, as an indoor/outdoor cat who had the best of both worlds. Losing a special pet is always terribly hard, but I sincerely believe we will meet again at the rainbow bridge. Re: [Felvtalk] Losses
Lorrie, I was saddened to read that Beezer has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I understand how hard that decision is but it is also the greatest gift we can give to a terminally ill furry friend. With each kitty I have had a QOL guide to judge when it was time for that cat to cross over - them not me. I am never ready. I'll light a candle for Beezer tonight. Lorrie, your vet was right. we want to keep our ufrry friends and our family here with with us forever or at least as loong as possible. sometimes that is not best for them. irealized that when my fatherpassed at 92. i wantd so for him to stay longer, but he was tired of figting the illness and the pain. that is the point that we have to be brave for our loved ones and let them go. we have beautiful memories to keep with us until we see them on the other side. dorlis Lorrie felineres...@kvinet.com wrote: Thank you Sharyl. Theresa, if you felv kitty is lonely, ask your vet about mixing him with your other cats. my veet said that as long as hey are up on their shots, it is okay and mine have been mixed for 2 years now with no problems. sure does make everyone happier. brooklynnat...@charter.net wrote: I live in Black Mountain NC and would be more than happy to give him a home. My vet totally discourages putting them together. He said there is too much risk. I have 7 other cats that are all healthy and I would love to be able to have them all be together but I'm afraid. I wouldn't want the healthy ones to get sick. I would feel so responsible. dlg...@windstream.net wrote: Theresa, if you felv kitty is lonely, ask your vet about mixing him with your other cats. my veet said that as long as hey are up on their shots, it is okay and mine have been mixed for 2 years now with no problems. sure does make everyone happier. brooklynnat...@charter.net wrote: I live in Black Mountain NC and would be more than happy to give him a home. Re: [Felvtalk] Blind/Deaf Cat
Someone surveyed the group about a year ago and quite a few people do co-mingle. Maybe you can check archives on co-mingling if you want to see that information. Because the FeLV+ cat has a compromised immune system, it is important to protect that cat from anything contagious going on with the other cats (eg URI).
