Hi Tanya:

I am so sorry about your Maggie.  My FELV+ kitty was diagnosed with Early
HCM years ago but it never really progressed much beyond a certain thickness
on one side. He also was diagnosed with a perfect valentine shaped heart -
misshapen.  I used to give him CoQ10 - mixed in his canned food - 10 mg per
day for his HCM.  I can't say if it did or did not help but it didn't seem
to hurt him at all. I stopped giving it to him when he was diagnosed with
FELV - no reason really other than I'm giving him so much other stuff right
now!

Saying purrayers for your furbaby.

Hello everyone,
? ???It has
been a while since I have been able to get on. I found out last month
that my FelV+ Maggie who turned 2 years old 16 days ago was just
diagnosed with a grade 4/6 heart murmur. She has seen many vets in her
short life and has not had a detectable one previously not even 7
months ago when she had her bi-annual physical and blood work. I took her
in for her physical and because lately she has had some exercise
intolerance that isn't normal for a 2 year old. Her heart ultrasound
gave us a diagnosis of hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy. Her walls were very thick and flow greatly
reduced. We started he on Enalapril.
     I was wondering if anyone
else has had the same diagnosis and if so if there was anything that
worked well for your little ones. Her heart disease is progressing very
quickly
and I was told that with her type there isn't anything they can do to
slow it down, we are only making her more comfortable with the Enalapril
by making her heart not have to work as hard.
     Any advice is
appreciated,
Tanya (Maggie's Mom)

Dear Ana,
I am so sorry to hear about Beltza.
I spoke to my veterinarian yesterday because one of our cats was diagnosed
with cardiomyopathy and possible lung cancer - blood tests will be in today.
I did ask him about leukemia and was going to get back to you; he said that
the most reliable test would have been bone marrow aspiration.
Again, please accept my condolences!
Nobody will ever replace your beloved Beltza, but my suggestion would be to
immediately give a home to a needy cat out there; it would be a great
tribute to Beltza.
Sincerely,
Natalie

I would throw away soft toys that cannot be laundered - any hard surfaces
like plastic that are porous, wash them with Clorox mixed with water - or
straight, if you wear a mask or bandana over your face! Rinse really well -
same goes for litter boxes. That should kill everything that may have been

After 2 months, there is no need to do any of this as the FeLV will all be
dead long ago. It is probably a good idea in general to wash the toys, but
it is never necessary to use straight bleach on anything to disinfect it.
Anything soaked in a 3-4% bleach solution for 20 minutes will be
disinfected.

and could you give some cites to research data on it? i haven't seen

additionally, cats who test positive for the FeLV antigen only once are not
necessarily actually positive. even if they are persistently viremic, they
are just normal cats until and if the virus is activated. while they are
asymptomatic, they are not seriously immune compromised, and presuming that
everything that happens to a cat who happens to FeLV+ is related to that

they revised it in 2009, and considering how little research there is being

not.

they had one in 2005, and in 2002 before that, that i know of.

thanks gary, for injecting some knowledge onto the list.

speaking of injecting things, there IS some research on the cornell site
about active virus particles being found in dried secretions much longer
than originally expected. however, it's nothing but interesting, pure
research, with no practical implications.

unless, of course, you have one of those psychopathic maine coons who
wanders around the house at night, with a syringe in paw, and scrapes up
dried secretions, rehydrates them, and somehow manages to inject the
solution into his unsuspecting sibkits.

they don't have a clue how much virus is required to pass it on, whether or
not the virus remains fully potent after extended exposure to air (it's a
retrovirus, it's job is to mutate), etc. what has been known for a very long
time is that it takes persistent, prolonged contact to transmit the virus,
and that it does not stay active in the vast majority of cases, long outside
the body.

please, please, folks, learn the facts, so that you can recognize what's not
fact when you hear it.

not to be rude, or anything.

Dear all,

Thank you for your support and your words.

Sara: Thanks a lot. I was the lucky one for finding her, and for being able
to put her in my car and take her home.

Barb: It's true, I will remember her and miss her everyday in my life. I
didn't had the chance to learn about leukemia, but I did had the chance to
learn about anemia, in case someone needs anything. She also taught me so
many daily things.

MaryChristine: Thanks so much for your words.
About CoQ10, I have done a lot of research, since one of our dogs, has
cardiomiopathy and needs it in her daily diet. How do I upload files?

Sharyl and Sally: Thanks for your words. I will always cherish the good
memories with her, starting the day I rescued her. One of my favorites is
how I taught her to jump into my arms. She was a very intelligent kitty, so
easy to train.

Shannon: Thanks. I keep telling her how much I love her.

Dlgegg: Thanks for the prayers.

Lisa Borden: One of the things I learned is that the FeLV is not functional
outside the kitty's body, in other words, it doesn't survive in the
outside. Good luck with your new kitty.

Lorrie: Indeed having a chance to say good-bye helped me, and I hope it also
helped her. Thank you.

Natalie: Thanks for your condolences and I'm really sorry to hear about your
cat. A guy who helped me a lot with Beltza, is Dr. Arnold Plotnick, he lives
in Manhattan, and he was of great help through email. His web page is
felineveterinaryadvice.com
I trust (a lot) my vet, but I wanted a second opinion. I was very relieved
to see that both had the same diagnose and both suggested the same
treatments. I just think Dr. Plotnick explained things better to me.
We have another cat, and two dogs. I constantly rescue dogs and cats from
the streets. We keep the sick ones (or the ugly ones which nobody wants), as
I only see beauty in them. I am sure Beltza will send me a kitty when she
selects it and when the grieve has passed. Beltza was my boyfriend's
favorite, so I think he is the one that should decide or rescue the new one.
Please let me know if I can be of any help. Thanks for your words.

Best wishes,
Ana

just wondering how many of us here have ever had a bone-marrow aspiration
suggested as a normal part of the FeLV testing protocol?

here's a really good article on the different forms of leukemia and
treatments--they don't mention the date on it, tho, but someone could
probably find it.

Re: [Felvtalk] testing methods, and forms of leukemia

2010-07-09 Thread Belinda Sauro
Bailey has a bone marrow aspirate because we couldn't find any reason
for his anemia, it showed the virus was active and was destroying his
new blood as fast as it was being produced and there were precancerous
cells there, we could never find were the suspected cancer was and after
he passed and a necropsy was done it was pancreatic cancer. We put him
on prednisolone, iron, and epogen and reversed his anemia. His HCT was
at 20%, went down to 18% by the time I got the epogen, went to 15% the
first tow weeks while on it and then started going up. It got up to 40%
and we lowered the epogen dose from 3 times a week to once a week. When
he passed his HCT was at 33%, normal and he had been on the epogen for
about 5 months, without it he would have died months before.
