hello, i think i know what you feel. i swore that 5 was my limit, no more and
just this week i took in a new baby. i wish i could win the lottery, then i
could buy a large piece of land, fence it in and rescue all the dogs, cats and
horses in our area. actually, all animals. i would rescue children, but they
won't let me just pick them up and take them home. if i could find a suitable
home for them, i would adopt them out, if not, then they are mine. so far, i
have not had to turn one away, that would be awfully hard to do. fortunately,
i live in a rural area and there are no restrictions on how many you can have.
my only restrictions are what i can afford and physically can care for. dorlis

Thanks for the suggestions Chris! Unfortunately, the shelter from
which Jack was adopted (earlier this year) is the same shelter where
we took him to be checked, so they had the same info as the microchip
service.

We did get some good news, however. His mange turned out to be a
fleabite allergy, so he is not contagious. I am hoping someone is able
to take him home soon; he is a cuddler and loves people.

I completely understand where you are coming from, I currently have 8 cats, and
although my house is large as well, with just my husband and I, it is a bit
much for me.  I love my cats and several are special needs (I only have one
FeLV+) right now, but just keeping up with the cleaning and getting them back
and forth to the vet (due to work) is a struggle.  I've never had 8 before and
frankly 5-6 is my limit, but I ended up having to keep 2 of my foster kittens,
long story!

Anyway, try not to feel guilty, you are doing your part and each of us should
only take on as much as we can handle, that way you will do your very best for
the kitties that you have.  I wish I could handle more, and when my husband and
I retire it's something I'm thinking about, but for now I am done.

Having worked to find owners post Katrina and now working with a shelter in
LA, I know that chips are sometimes the very last thing people remember to
update when they move or change phone #s. Don't know what chip company you
talked to but, be sure to ask them:
1) When/where the chip was implanted--that can give you the orig vet or
shelter as well as give u a hint as to age
2) ALL the alternate contacts listed
3) The name and address of the owner as well as the phone #

If that doesn't help, feel free to e-mail me--I've had some pretty good
success tracking people whose chip info was outdated.

I can so sympathise with what you are saying. A couple of weeks ago my vet
called me and asked if I could take a positive cat with anemia that he believed
there was hope for. I had to tell him no and I am still thinking about that
poor cat. The owners were being jerks, refused to have their other cats tested,
even though they go outside, and wanted to put this one down immediatly.
I don't help anywhere near as many cats as you do but as you say, I wish I
could rescue them all. My husband has reached his limit with seven cats and if
I took another I know there would be some issues in our marrage.
I guess you just have to remember what a difference you have made in the lives
of the ones you have rescued.
