Re: OT - ARGH to Pet Health Pharmacy

2007-04-14 Thread Kelley Saveika

Well, the first time I got Missy's meds filled there they came
quickly, with no problems. Then I got Shimmer's meds. Then they sent
pills for Toodles when they were supposed to send compounded meds, and
wouldn't take them back because I had opened the BAG (not the pill
bottle, but the priority mail bag - how was I supposed to tell it was
wrong if I didn't open it?). Then they made up 100 syringes of
compounded Elavil for Toodles AND Shimmer. Which is more medicine
than I could use before it went bad. Then they sent a FedEx bag for
$18, only put one out of 4 meds in it, and sent the rest Priority
Mail. Then one of the items in the Priority mail order was supposed
to be refrigerated, but wasn't.

I've come to the conclusion I can either have cheap(er) meds or get
good service. Not both.

Kelly, That's great that you live out of the city. We plan to live on the
edge of town, well, in a town our size, that's not too hard-technically

gets to build a big garage/man cave, that I get part of it for a shelter!
But, in the meantime, I might work on him for the English garden idea for

for invitations-they just come over! But, I'll have to say that small town
life does have its benefits-very safe-but I'm not so sure how safe it would
be for my cats. But, all of you have really motivated me to realize my
dreams and get to work on a better job so I can afford to do this! In the
meantime, I might work on educating people this summer about spay/neuter. So
many people around here are back-door feeders, but they don't bother to
spay/neuter! That makes me irate! They think they're helping cats, but
they're only adding more starving, sick babies. I hope I can get some people

Yes, but I *have* to have it compounded. I can force pills down him
if needed for a short time for infection, but it is stressful for him
and this is something he will need to take for the rest of his life to
prevent spraying (He initially had a urinary tract infection but it
has been treated and cured - he's had 4 urinalyses, including the one
sent out to the lab, and it is definitely behavioral spraying at this
point). Causing him greater anxiety by pilling him doesn't help his
stress nor his spraying.

I have ordered from that company you link, but if I have to have
something soon I can't order from them. I have found them to take a
very long time to get here, then they send it registered so I have to
find time to actually go to the post office when they are open and get
it. So if I have someone who is actually sick right now I can't use
it.

Kelly, sorry to hear about your troubles! I give my Bandit (10 years)
fluoxitine (Prozac) from the vet's office-half a pill per day. It stopped
his spraying from anxiety immediately and only costs me around $6.00 per
month. His behavior otherwise is fine-not dopey or sluggish. However, I'm
not an expert by any means-but that might work for you! Melissa

Re: OT - ARGH to Pet Health Pharmacy

2007-04-10 Thread Nina

Kelley,
I'd call the vet that wrote the script. They should be able to either
help you straighten out the pricing/wrong script problem, or tell you
where else to order it from. I'd also call local human pharmacies in
your area and ask the pharmacist to recommend a local compounding
pharmacy. I usually get my compounded meds in the mail from a couple
states away, but when I'm in a hurry I have one within driving distance
that I use. Try not to stress too much, you'll get the meds you need
for your pee happy friend.

What have you done to try and work with him, (what's his name?)
behaviorally to curb his spraying? I'm betting you've tried lots of
things. Don't give up hope that he will continue to spray forever. I
can't tell you how many times I've thought a behavioral issue would
never resolve, but given lots of time, imagination, and patience things
do eventually work themselves out.

Lets see Nina.

What have I tried (I have at least two sprayers that I know of. Then
there is whoever is peeing in my bed (I have plastic cover on it, but
at least every other day I have to strip it and bleach the sheets.
Depends if they have peed on it that day).

I have tried Feliway. Did NOTHING whatsoever.

Tried extra attention.

Not sure what else to try, to be honest. If I had the recommended #
of litterboxes I'd have to have 31, and I don't have room for 31. He
has urinated everywhere, including my ankle one day. I clean up the
pee trails going up and down the walls every couple of days. I have
had an offer to help me rip up the carpet so I will have concrete
floors like every other rescuer I know. She likes to get on top of
the stove and spray the backsplash. Toodles never had a UTI, she was
checked and her urine was clear. I'm trying to find her a foster home
with fewer cats.

He is on Elavil only, she is on Elavil plus pain meds for her
congenital spinal disorder.

the wrong prescription. I'll learn how to compound Elavil myself
 before I pay $125 for a month's supply!

I'm sure I will get this straight eventually, but in the meantime
Toodles, Shimmer, Sapphire and Joey are without their meds because
they need a credit card payment in advance for anything over
$100and I'm not paying $250 for Elavil. For something lifesaving
sure, but not something to keep Shimmer and Toodles from spraying
 everywhere.

2007-04-10 Thread Kelley Saveika

Really if I want it to stop, I think what I would need to do is stop
rescuing, and I just can't do that. And he's my personal cat, so I
can't give him up. He's just very very pissed (pardon the expression)
and letting me know it. The Elavil helps..a little.

Not sure what else to try, to be honest. If I had the recommended #

has urinated everywhere, including my ankle one day. I clean up the

had an offer to help me rip up the carpet so I will have concrete

I get flagyl compounded...expensive but it saves my hands from being
clawed up. I would not be able to inject it via IV either.

I have one on Lasix, .3 mg once a day, she also gets Lysine and a
heart supplement and COQ10... Joey takes 2 prednilosone am and
pm...and his Leukeran will be once every 48 hours. Shimmer and
Toodles are supposed to be on Elavil but it is not here. And I have
giardia:( Well, I don't..but it is in my house again... a pox upon
thee, giardia.

Re: OT - ARGH to Pet Health Pharmacy

2007-04-10 Thread Nina
I'm sorry but the ankle thing got me chuckling. On another list,
someone had mentioned that her cats actually seemed to pee more on
plastic covered furniture! There was one cat that hurries to pee on
plastic grocery store bags if they make it to the kitchen floor during
unpacking. Our Queen Ursula pees on the sink back splash whenever she
is annoyed with us, (very effective behavioral modification for Bruce
and I!). She's a bottle baby that grew up very indulged and spoiled,
(not to mention a calico), and she reminds us often that she DID NOT
agree to welcoming all these street urchin vagabonds that find their way
to our door.

I hear you about how crowded your living quarters are, is there no way
to separate the pee merchants and give them some private space for
awhile? I have found that even limited time outs from the others during
the day, (at the same time each day if possible), helps. They at least
know they will have some peaceful alone time at regular intervals and it
helps them tolerate each other when they do have to be together. I'm
betting that your house looks like mine with bookless shelves and cat
trees galore. Vertical space sometimes helps and I also find that if I
help protect personal territories, (shooing interlopers off of someone
else's favorite perch for example), helps everyone respect each other's
boundaries.

As for extra litterboxes... I use those cement mixing trays they sell
at Home Depot. They are just about the same height as regular
litterboxes but about 2.5x as large. Even when they are butted up
against each other the extra space seems to help curb litterbox avoidance.

Sending you strength, (give me your address if you want me to send you
some ozium, or clothes pins for your nose).
Nina

Have it sent to your office so you don't have to retrieve from the post
office.

If it's a lifetime situation then order a large amount and keep in stock so
you don't have to get it at the last minute.

When you get the Elavil pills, taste one -- just touch your tongue to it or
put a drop of water on it and get a taste on your finger. Then you know how to
mix it -- if it's bitter and has a nasty aftertaste, use syrup or molassas; if
it's a little salty or not too bad then you can mix with waterpacked tuna or
meat baby food.

I almost never pill anyone, and I have Connie (epileptic) on phenobarbitol
and Keppra several times a day for life and Peepers (neurological problems) on
prozac daily, also for life. I also have fosters who need antibiotics or
metronidazole for awhile to get over what they picked up and the shelter. And
I have Ember, a cat with miserable skin allergies, who gets a depo medrol
injection every other month.

Hi Kelley,

This definitely sounds like an error. Amitriptyline HCl (generic form of
Elavil) is very inexpensive. I assume you have to have it compounded because
your kitties receive very small dosages. I've dealt with Pet Health Pharmacy
a number of times over the years and they have always been extremely helpful
and have saved me a LOT of money. I'll bet they had someone else's
prescription confused with yours. Good luck and let us know how it turns
out.

Kelly, I feel so bad for you after you've described your troubles-your cats
do much more random peeing than my Bandit used to. He only went in the heat
vent (very nice) or on top of it once we covered it with plastic and all
sorts of contraptions. I think I tried EVERYTHING before my vet suggested
the prozac. Like you, I found that Feliway was interesting to my cats, but
did nothing to their behavior. I'm so sorry that your babies are difficult
to pill. Bandit just opens up and swallows very obediently. Unlike yours, he
hears the bottle opening and usually comes into the kitchen-weird I know.
I'm not sure what his pills taste like, but he must be okay with them-or
else he's just very excited to please-plus he gets extra love and attention
when he takes his medicine-that could be why. You must be a very patient and
loving person to have dealt with so much trouble this long! I know how
exhausting and frustrating it can be! Plus, I'd find myself crawling around
the floor with my nose ridiculously sniffing the carpet :-), very
embarrassing if anyone came over! But, I was relieved, if you could call it
that, that my cat only chose one place other than the litter box. I only
pray it gets better for you! Bless you for sticking it out! I had people
tell me they would have put down a cat that was doing what mine did! That's
just horrifying!

But, I also agree with you Nina about not listening to those who are not as
experienced-and I certainly am not experienced. I'm very new to medicating
cats-I've only recently had special needs with Bandit and then with the 3
rescues this week. I'm learning quite a bit. So, if anyone thinks what I am
doing is wrong-don't hesitate to let me know! I won't take it personally if
you don't take my ignorance personally! I'm trying to learn quickly. By the
way, what is this Flagyl? Melissa

Hi Melissa,

It is really my fault he pees. He always, always used his litterbox
until I insisted on bringing a LOT of animals into the house.

He's letting me know he's mad.:p

Flagyl is for diarrhea and giardia and maybe some other stuff in cats.
The generic name is metronidazole, I believe. My understanding is
that it is very, very bitter. My vet was surprised I could get
Flagyl pills down anyone. I did get them down them, but my hands were
constantly clawed up.

Shimmer just doesn't want to take ANY pills. I have other cats that
are much easier to pill. Joey is not hard to pill at all.

I have had to give up some things like having people over ever...I
think we are going to work on a better solution...like a building with
TILE floors..and a drain in the middlethat would be my dream
situation.:)

There are so many tinies who just need a few weeks, or max of a few
months...then they are adopted almost right away...there's got to be
somewhere to stash them.

Flagyl is the brand name for metronidazole. It is used for giardia and other
intestinal bugs in cats and in people. (With people, think tourist tummy
that you get from drinking from a contaminated water supply.) It is one of the
worst tasting meds I have ever encountered.

Uh, we have one cat who peed on the plug-in Feliway dispenser. We don't
waste money on Feliway anymore.

Wha'd I say?? Whatever I said about not listening to those who aren't
experienced, (I really don't remember), I didn't mean to curtail
discussion. Heck, if I only wrote when I was positive about what I was

I see Kelley has already answered you question about Metronidazole, (aka

I've had similar issues with compounding pharmacies. Try

believe they still do compounding, and they were actually competent after my

frustrating attempt to use the one my vet recommended.
