Re: Looking for a good canned food
Those companies won't have to worry too much about making money off this incident. The law of supply and demand will automatically up their profits because you can't buy the other stuff right now, and a lot of people won't anyway when the products hit the shelves again. It's just like the peanut butter scare. I still can't buy Peter Pan or Great Value brand, and Jif can't keep the shelves stocked because their production lines weren't slated to handle that kind of demand all of a sudden. Jif has profited quite nicely from Con Agra's misfortune, and the other cat/dog food supply companies will enjoy the same trend for the time being. :) Wendy --- Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I noticed that OnlyNatural sent out an email confirming that none of the food products they sell are effected by the recall and had no problem touting the superiority of their products in a very timely manner. Perhaps all wheat has gluten, but I highly doubt it all comes from the same source in China. I don't know. Now I have to go find my glasses and check the label on my Roman Meal bread! Could it be possible that Menu Foods also produces processed foods for people too? Or that they are not the only ones cutting cost corners by not testing the raw ingredients that they use in their products? Sheesh. Is your point that we are never safe from the hazards of life as we know it? I've lived long enough to acknowledge that we can't safeguard against every frightening contingency out there, (or in our cupboard). But what's a conscientious human to do? We have to do what we always strive to do, keep ourselves as educated and informed as possible, (thanks to you for alerting us first about this latest plague on our complacency) and give thanks that we have made it through another day. I hate it when my nice, safe illusionary cocoon is disrupted. Are you saying we should patch our collective cocoons and use prayers and glow to protect us? no, not that we can't be safe from all hazards, but that we're really fooling ourselves if we think that our food sources have been safe for a long time. we've all heard about SPORADIC outbreaks of e-coli, salmonella, etc etc and seen videos of horrible things happening at slaughterhouses, but could talk ourselves out of worrying too much because they WERE hit-and-miss. think about what this would be like on a human scale if ONE company was responsible for processing the same percentage of human food as it turns out menu foods seems to be with pet food and with the trend to multi-national corporations, factory farms rather than smaller, individually managed (and maintained) ones, that might be where our own food supply is heading. i think this could be the wake-up call we have been not wanting to hear. sadly, maybe we'll listen more clearly cuz it's our critters i guess i'm saying that i'm not really surprised, because too many bad things have been allowed to go on for a long time, in the name of progress, and corporate ethics. and not enough people have stood up and said, NO, this is NOT acceptable. oh, heck, i have to have a POINT? damn. that may change my whole outlook on life. While it may be largely a matter of personal taste, I've had a couple of very finicky eaters who wanted to subsist on Friskies turkey prime fillets. Also, Marie, the ultimate finicky eater, can tell the difference between Friskies regular chicken in gravy and the senior formula/special diet formulation of Friskies chicken in gravy. She prefers the senior formula/special diet variety and won't touch the other. (Marie is 9 years old. She has never eaten a single morsel of dry food in her life. And I'm sure she never will. At this point, if ever I saw her eat dry food, I'd rush her to the vet. She eats strictly Friskies prime filllet varieties, and senior formula or special diet chicken in gravy.) I have a dry food addict who became ill a couple of months ago with a severe liver infection and lost a lot of weight. I tried to get Boo to eat everything, but he had absolutely no interest in any food (except meat baby food) until I tried the new Fancy Feast elegant medleys. He just gobbles the entire 3 oz. down immediately. It's really expensive - about twice as much as the regular Fancy Feast cans, but worth it if you need your kitty to eat. I think I will try your suggestions. I am at a loss. All she wants to eat right now is dry Purina Indoor Formula. I went out and bought some real expensive dryfoods and hardly any of our cats would eat them. We were feeding Friskies Pacific Salmon, but everyone was throwing it up - it was the same last night with the Friskies Whitefish and Tuna! When I was a kid and we had cats outside and they would have eaten anything that they could get. I guess we have pampered our guys now too much. Thanks again Susan. Debbie- Well I guess it really depends on our fur babies. And believe me, I have a ungiue crew, and that's putting it mildly... Some will eat just about anything, but I'll focus on my persnickety babies... My Puma (ancient, ill w/ kitty alzheimers [EXCEPT when it comes to food] ) thrives on Fancy Feast, especially the new kind. ($$$'s, but he's worth it..). He also LOVES Friskies Tuna Egg. Only thing is, I really have to smush it for the old boy He likes his food really, really wet. He also loves Friskies Mixed Grill. And, Ocean Whitefish, Turkey Giblets, Salmon... And, except for a few, my babies detest any sliced varieties...(Except for the Friskies Turkey Giblets - probably know it's good for them...) Have to confess, they all hated the good stuff (canned, they ALL eat good dry.).. Another thing, almost all of them dislike any beef flavor. Even the non-persnickety ones. Hope you get some suggestions that Cassie will actually love... Sorry if I wasn't more helpful. With this memory thing, it's impossible to recall all. Just remember Friskies 'cause it's what we exclusively fed at shelter.. Hugs Best Wishes, Patti her (Friskies/Fancy Feast) gang ** AOL now offers free email to everyone. my cats love the fancy feast medleys too...especially the chicken and turkey. I am trying pet gold elite and getting mixed reviews. As a snack one of my cats loves the sheba snack cans, they aren't the full meal cans but little snacking wet food, expensive, but worth it when the cats love it so much. Re: Looking for a good canned food - OOPS!!!
Debbie, Sorry, I just read about the episode w/ the Salmon Ocean Whitefish...Guess I wasn't too much help. But, since you want Cassie eating something other than dry only, have you tried baby food [meat]? Always works for me. Especially when Puma was so sick just diagnosed, he was a mess. I really believe that's what got him back on track.. (That, and me FINALLY being home!) Again, Good Luck! Hugs, Patti her gang ** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Re: Looking for a good canned food
Try Shredded Friskies...Turkey and Cheese, Salmon and Cheese. My cats devour this stuff and will begged for it. Friskies Prime Fillets Fancy Feast Medley Whiskas Buy a can of each so you can get an idea what the kitty will eat. I have bought the expensive food in the past and it was a waste of money they wouldn't eat it...tried to bury it! My Vets that are Felv/Fiv friendly say give what they will eat to get the something solid and water from the wetfood. Too many changes in food isn't good for them due their digestive tract. So be careful. I too remember feeding my cats years ago Puss n Boots and Friskies in the big cans. It was when there wasn't so many varieties as today but they were happy with it. Didn't have all the health problems either...makes ya wonder though. Boy, times have changed! Re: Looking for a good canned food/other things too
Well, with what's been going on with my life things have been very hectic and finances being a strain/stressful. I'm surprised I remember that too...lmao I haven't replied back to anyone but feel bad for those that have lost their furbabies to this horrible disease and other illnesses. You all do remain in my thoughts and prayers. I do read all emails when possible. Felt it was time to write to the group. This crap with the food recall is out of control especially when they knew about this before it actually hit wire/media. They have known this for several weeks prior. It is estimated 1 out of every 6 is affected by these foods that will die. No pet deserves this! God this just pisses me off! I know at times you were there for me when I needed a friend on my losses of my fur-angels plus when they were sick prior. You are a great bunch of caring and loving people. Remember, when I have said when the cure comes I will eat Cheesecake with you that still stands...even though I can't stand the stuff. It will be a victory! Things continue to happen in my household never a dull moment. In a message dated 3/21/2007 7:16:34 A.M. Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: In a message dated 3/21/07 11:08:41 A.M. Re: Looking for a good canned food
I too have a house full of finicky eaters that won't touch anything that's priced above a $1 a can. It's very frustrating trying to convince them that it's good for them and that mommy is sick of purchasing expensive canned cat food to feed to the dogs. They all love the Innova Evo dry, and they also like the Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken. All this talk about canned food reminded me of a brand that my cats did like but I was unable to find nearby with any regularity. It's called Triumph. I just found an online pet store that offers a ton of varieties: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/ Check the ingredients list though, some seem better than others. A couple of them have onion powder/salt added, and I've always heard that was a no no. Pet food direct also sells the dry I use at a slightly lower price than where I'm getting it now, (onlynaturalpet.com). I'm going to check shipping costs and see which is truly cheaper before I order. Nina Debbie wrote: Anyone know a really good canned food that cats can't seem to resist? I have 10 inside tastes differ among all. But Wellness Turkey or Wellness Chicken is way up on the list. Some will eat the Felidae canned. Most will eat the Friskies Turkey Filets that someone else mentioned And also PetGuard's Fish, Chicken Liver (that's one variety not 3!) Pam Kelley Saveika wrote: My kids eat the felidae canned just fine. But I have heard other people say their cats do not. Re: Looking for a good canned food
Fancy Feast is always a big hit here. When they are sick they seem to prefer the ones that are just the regular pate (not minced, grilled, or marinated - those they just eat the gravy). Otherwise, the 'Sardines, Shrimp and Crab in aspic' (orange label) is the hands down favorite. The new fancy feast medleys with the garden greens are scarfed up immediately and promptly regurgitated...the yellow fin tuna being the favorite there. Mama Kitty is going through an FeVL+ crash and not wanting to eat. I opened up a pouch of Chicken of the Sea brand Salmon -- just the plain kind - no marinade -- she will eat that when she won't eat anything else.
