Along with him was a Mexican who was also struggling to stay afloat because of the large backpack of drugs that was strapped to his back. If they didn't get help, they'd surely drown. Now Tokyo, usually so full of life by day and night, has the aura of death about it. Everyone, it seems, shares the opinion that something very bad is happening at the Fukushima nuclear power plant 148 miles away, and nobody wants to risk breathing the air. The British government has joined other nations in urging its citizens to leave the country whatever way they can, including banding together to join a charter flight. Other Britons trapped in the tsunami-stricken Sendai area have been offered the chance of being driven to Tokyo on a chartered bus. They were under the false impression that consuming enough table salt would protect them from contamination. Rumours also spread that sea salt supplies would be spoiled by radiation. The wave of panic in Beijing, Shanghai and other parts was said to have been fuelled by text messages via mobile phones. Prices of salt jumped five or ten-fold – if it could be found at all. In China, table salt is fortified with potassium iodide to help prevent iodine deficiency, a major cause of learning difficulties. Potassium iodide can help protect the thyroid gland from radiation injury, but experts say that to get the equivalent of the 130mg dose needed to protect against radiation, someone would need to consume 750 teaspoons of iodised salt every day. A tiny fraction of that salt intake would be fatal. The Chinese government is trying to counter the fears. A range of national and provincial agencies issued notices to crack down on hoarding and spreading rumours, and warned of fines of up to £200,000 for inflating prices. The country’s largest salt producer, China National Salt Industry Corp, issued a statement saying that ample reserves were available and that ‘panic-buying and hoarding is unnecessary’. But it will be a long journey because the vehicle will have to skirt around the nuclear power plant which stands between Sendai and the capital. Some Britons have taken their own steps to get out of Tokyo, among them 23-year-old Kezia Poole, an English language teacher from London who has lived in Japan for 13 months. In Roppongi, the red-light district which is usually thick with crowds, where English girls play hostess to deceitful Japanese husbands, there was hardly a customer in sight. A British hostess, who would give her name only as Jenny, was already on her way home before midnight, when usually business is thriving. 'They've said I can leave early,' the blonde, heavily wrapped in leather and furs, said in her north country accent. 'A lot of us haven't seen much of the news – how bad is it, then?' There was no one in the whole of Tokyo who could tell her that, and even if they did, would it be the truth? Recently a routine police patrol was parked outside the Cypress Lounge in Darien, Georgia. After last call, the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so apparently intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity, in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his car and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on and off--it was a fine, dry summer night--, flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little, and then remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons' vehicles left. At last, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road. The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, and promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyzer test. To his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all! Dumbfounded, the officer said, I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the police station. The Empty Soap Box *One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was the case of the empty soap box, which happened in one of Japan's biggest cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soap box that was empty. Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some reason, one soap box went through the assembly line empty. Management asked its engineers to solve the problem. Post-haste, the engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high- resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soap boxes that passed through the line to make sure they were not empty. No doubt, they worked hard and they worked fast but they spent whoopee amount to do so. But when a workman was posed with the same problem, did not get into complications of X-rays, etc but instead came out with another solution. He bought a strong industrial electric fan and pointed it at the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soap box passed the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line. Moral of the story: Always look for simple solutions. Devise the simplest possible solution that solves the problem. So, learn to focus on solutions not on problems. A young, 18 year old student was struggling to pay his fees. He was an orphan, and not knowing where to turn for money, he came up with a bright idea. A friend and he decided to host a musical concert on campus to raise money for their education. They reached out to the great pianist Ignacy J. Paderewski. His manager demanded a guaranteed fee of $2,000 for the piano recital. A deal was struck. And the boys began to work to make the concert a success. The big day arrived. Paderewski performed at Stanford. But unfortunately, they had not managed to sell enough tickets. The total collection was only $1,600. Disappointed, they went to Paderewski and explained their plight. They gave him the entire $1,600, plus a cheque for the balance of $400. They promised to honour the cheque soonest possible. No said Paderewski. This is not acceptable He tore up the cheque, returned the $1,600 and told the boys Here's the $1,600. Please deduct whatever expenses you have incurred. A short period of depression, irritability and loss of appetite: Migraines and depression are sometimes related in some persons. The affected person may have a period of depression prior to a migraines attack. Migraine headache also are sometimes preceded loss of appetite and irritability. Migraines attacks may occur every day in some people or may occur with a weeks gap or a month or may be over a year. There is no predictable migraines attack cycle that has been established yet. WOMEN WHO KNOW THEIR PLACE Barbara Walters, of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul , Afghanistan , several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands. She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to, and are happy to, maintain the old custom. Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghan women and asked, 'Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?' Nature Photographer's Young Daughter Just hanging out: The nature photographer's daughter whose best friends are elephants, chimps and giraffes By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 12:22 AM on 15th March 2011 She's swung on an elephant's trunk, cuddled a chimpanzee and had a nap with kangaroos, but this is no real-life Jungle Girl, as Amelia Forman has met some of the world's most exotic animals just by tagging along with her mother in the U.S. Her adventures began at the age of three when her photographer mother Robin took her along with her as she went to work at private homes and game parks as far afield as New York and Texas. Now aged 11, Amelia's mother has produced a series of touching images showing the remarkable bonds the child has been able to form while on the photo shoots. 'I had produced a series called Primate Portraits and through that I had built up a network of contacts in the animal community in New York state and subsequently through other parts of America. More... 'As part of my work with chimpanzees, lemurs, gibbons and smaller monkeys inside a circus family in 2002 my daughter was sometimes there and she was photographed. 'The first time was when she was three years old and she met a young chimp named Ricky. 'Their rapport was instant and they were great together. They just sat there kissing and became firm friends instantly.' However, in 2004, a double family tragedy for Robin prompted her to embark on what was to eventually become her project and printed as one of a five book series called 'Amelia's World', published by The Aperture Foundation. 'She loves them, she is so natural with them. 'She is a shy girl, but can have more confidence with a giraffe, or a chimpanzee than a fully grown man or woman could have with another person. 'We spend time most summers attending fairs and meeting contacts in the animal community, where Amelia can come close to elephants like Shiba, who simply picked her up with her trunk. 'That was a magical moment for me and Amelia. It really was like Amelia was talking to Shiba, just like you would with a person. It was beautiful.' Robin says she is aware of photographing Amelia around wild - albeit highly trained - animals. 'I don't want to put my daughter in harm's way,' said Robin. The specific concern is the DoD plan to deal with military pay. The 13-page draft plan prepared for the services and defense agencies says “All military personnel will continue in normal duty status regardless of their affiliation with exempt or non-exempt activities. Military personnel will serve without pay until such time as Congress makes appropriated funds available to compensate them for this period of service.” Since my original blog post on the subject, congress passed a fifth continuing resolution that extended the deadline to April 8. This means that the April 15 payday could be impacted. There are two things to keep in mind if the government shutdown occurs. First, the longest government shut down in the last 20 years occurred in late 1995 and lasted 21 days. In the worst case scenario a shutdown would result in a delay in military pay, but servicemembers will eventually get paid. BAPTIST DINNER A group of country friends from the Cottonwood Baptist Church wanted to get together on a regular basis, socialize, and play games. The lady of the house was to prepare the meal. When it came time for Al and Janet to be the hosts, Janet wanted to outdo all the others. Janet decided to have mushroom-smothered steak. But mushrooms are expensive. She then told her husband, No mushrooms. They are too high. He said, Why don't you go down in the pasture and pick some of those mushrooms? There are plenty in the creek bed. She said, No, some wild mushrooms are poison. He said, Well, I see varmints eating them and they're OK. So Janet decided to give it a try. She picked a bunch, washed, sliced, and diced them for her smothered steak. Then she went out on the back porch and gave Ol' Spot (the yard dog) a double handful. Ol' Spot ate every bite. All morning long, Janet watched Ol' Spot and the wild mushrooms didn't seem to affect him, so she decided to use them. The meal was a great success, and Janet even hired a helper lady from town to help her serve. She had on a white apron and a fancy little cap on her head. After everyone had finished, they relaxed, socialized, and played 42 and dominoes. About then, the helper lady from town came in and whispered in Janet's ear. She said, Mrs. Williams, Ol' Spot is dead. Janet went into hysterics. After she finally calmed down, she called the doctor and told him what had happened. The doctor said, That's bad, but I think we can take care of it. I will call for an ambulance and I will be there as quick as possible. We'll give everyone enemas and we will pump out everyone's stomach. Everything will be fine. Just keep them calm. Soon they could hear the siren as the ambulance was coming down the road. The EMTs and the doctor had their suitcases, syringes, and a stomach pump. One by one, they took each person into the bathroom, gave them an enema, and pumped out their stomach. After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, I think everything will be fine now. and he left. Yesterday, just a month before Prince William marries Kate Middleton, palace officials offered a glimpse of the venue and the team working round the clock to ensure their big day goes without a hitch. Those lucky enough to have been invited, will have access to 19 state rooms, decorated in opulent style, following the Westminster Abbey ceremony on April 29. Guests will also be able to wander through areas normally reserved for heads of state and other dignitaries in the palace’s west wing, including the White and Blue Drawing Rooms, the Music Room and State Dining Room, all of which date back to the 1820s. Remarkably, just 60 staff, from chefs and footmen to housekeepers, will be on duty catering for up to 900 guests. But Edward Griffiths, deputy master of the household, whose department is responsible for all hospitality, says his staff are well drilled. Guests will be offered champagne and canapes ‘from the moment they arrive’, he explained. Their glasses will be topped up throughout the day – although the Prince and his new wife plan to stick to soft drinks (bar a glass of champagne for the toasts) until later, it is understood. The Queen’s head chef Mark Flanagan admitted his team would be under pressure but was confident his 21-strong staff – who produce 550 meals a day when the Queen is in residence – were up to the task. The cooks will be using copper pots to create the wedding breakfast, some of which were first used 190 years ago during the reign of George IV. Mr Flanagan would not reveal details about what they planned to serve but promised to use ‘the best of British’ and source much of it from the Queen’s gardens and estates. Brandon Cole, a photographer from Washington state on the west coast of the US, uses his expertise as a marine biologist to hunt for the almost invisible animals. They're hard to find - you don't see them straight away. Sometimes you happen upon them - but many of them require a search pattern. For example when hunting a cowrie snail on a soft coral you have to know it lives in association with that particular coral. So you look for the host and then look for a needle in a hay stack - but you have to know which hay stacks to look for first. It has to do with survival, he said. They adapt to their environment through natural selection. Most of these animals are camouflaged against the background of their natural habitat.
