Hi Kim,
Darcy is right. I just tried it and it works great. Get your
toolbar set up the way you want it. Hold down the option key and go
to ViewProgram Tool SetToolset 1.

Now go back to the view menu without holding option down and choose
Select Toolset Toolset 1. Then, as Darcy said, save your prefs.
Your programmed toolset should come up and stay after you quit and
restart Finale.

Thanks Darcy. I have used Program and Select staff set before but never this.

[Finale] Re: TOOL BAR

2004-10-21 Thread Kim Richmond
Well, it worked part way. The order of tools that I set in the Tool Bar
was preserved, but it went back the Tool Bar went back to its default
position of 3 columns on the upper left. Here's how I would like to
have it: Contemporary palette, one horizontal column across top of
screen. My workaround is to change the palette to Classic, drag the
Tool Bar (after some finagling) to one horizontal column across top,
then change it back to Contemporary.
So thank you Darcy and Karen for the method in which to keep the
specified order. Now if only the other could be accomplished.

Re: [Finale] Re: TOOL BAR

2004-10-21 Thread Darcy James Argue
Kim,
I don't understand why you are still having trouble. Finale has no
trouble keeping track of any custom toolbar alignment and layout. The
palette style (Classic vs. Contemporary) should not be relevant.

I tried doing exactly what you said you wanted to do -- make the
toolbar a single horizontal row across the top -- and saving that
configuration, and it works just fine. Here are my steps:

1) Set up the palette exactly the way you want it (including order of
tools and alignment).

2) Program this as Tool Set 1.
3) Make sure Tool Set 1 is selected in the View Menu.
4) Save preferences.
5) Quit and relaunch Finale.
The toolbar alignment remained exactly the way I set it up. If this
doesn't work for you, perhaps your Finale preferences have been
corrupted.

Re: [Finale] keyboard shortcuts

2004-10-21 Thread laloba2
Hi Stig,
I'm a fan of QuickeysI think Brad had a link in one of his
previous posts on this topic that has a lot of good ideas. It took a
bit to reprogram my shortcuts from OS 9 to OS X because the program
is much different in OS X. But I'm very happy with the most recent
version of Quickeys.

I have a keyboard overlay that I created to go on my F keys. I
have three rows of shortcuts programmed on my F keys. No modifiers
used for the first row except that I have avoided programming the
keys that Expose uses. Then another two more rows with modifier.
(i.e. F1, opt-F1, ctrl-F1) the overlay serves as a cheat sheet. I
have the Finale tool palate programmed on the F keys so it is really
fast to switch between tools. There are also shortcuts that I
programmed using regular key commands that I assigned to something I
could remember easily...for example, my File Info is programmed to
opt-F.

It took some time to do all of this but it pays off greatly in speed
while working with Finale.

Best,
Karen

Re: [Finale] Drum Patterns

2004-10-21 Thread laloba2
Hi Ben,
If your bass part is already on it's own staff, then you just have to
move it to a different layer. By default, Layer 1 Stems are up and
Layer 2 Stems are down. So if you move your bass part to layer 2
(Mass EditMove Copy Layer) and then cut and paste that part into
your drum part staff, the stems will go the way you want them to.

You can set your layers up any way you want though in
OptionsDocument Settings and then click on Layers in the window on
the left.

If your drum part is all on one staff you'll need to use either Mass
EditUtilitiesExplode Music or one of the utilities in TG Tools (if
you have TGtools...it is a wonderful third party set of plug-ins) TG
ToolsParts...there are a bunch of great tools in here that will do
amazing things (thanks Tobias!!! :-) including specifying ranges of
notes to filter out during the explosion. This will allow you to
split the different instruments out so you can work with them better.

Implode music is also sometimes handy if you need to merge two
separate parts back onto one staff in the same layer. I sometimes
split everything out on to it's own staff using explode parts to
quickly change noteheads for say the high-hat and cymbal parts to
x's Then I use implode music to put the high hat, cymbals and snare
back together in the same layer on the same staff. Finale will sort
it out so that everything is clean as far as the stems go.

There is another great way to use Explode Music. Lets say you want
to just keep the bottom note of a multi note part. You could set
Explode Music up this way:

Split into 1 staff
Explode Direction: Bottom up (you can also use top Down to get rid of
all but the top note)
Extra notes: Discard
Place Music Into: Existing Staves Starting with (the staff you are working on)

This will leave only the bottom note of your drum part. You may have
a little cleaning up to do but I use this a lot too.

You'll have to experiment to see what will work best for you. There
are many, many different ways to handle your project.

I must admit...this is one of my favorite things to do in Finale!!
Best,
Karen
