So London Haydn Horn in C is basso but Esterhazy Haydn Horn in C is (or at least may be) C alto. Horns in Bb basso occur in Mozart, Brahms, and R Strauss. I have only ever met A and Ab basso in Italian music (Verdi Requiem). It's such a thorny issue because in many baroque parts, the markings are so inconsistent (sometimes they are clearly staccato markings, but in a set of doublet-parts, where there are two copies of violin 1, the same bar will have wedges / daggers. One was done by a George Cook Kimball for his dissertation in the mid 1980s, and was included in the Garland series on the 18th century (general editor Barry S. Brook). But apparently Alan Badley, who works with Naxos and their publishing arm (Artaria) prepared another index, but I can't seem to locate this either as a published book or a dissertation (Badley DID prepare a index of the concerti for his Ph.D however). I'd be so grateful if anyone could help find that Badley index for the symphonies, or if they have any suggestions. Thanks! [Finale] Youtube / music videos and revenue sharing question
Hi everyone: A friend suggested that I do Youtube videos (instructional type), and make some money that way. Since I already have about 115 videos of music editions uploaded already I assumed, why not at least monetize them and get started right away. But apparently if you have music, the Youtube automated system flags your video, and sends you a review notice, asking for details. I had to do that about ten times last night. Then today I get an E-mail from Youtube stating I've been removed from their revenue sharing plan: because I have so many videos posted that would would appear to have copyright issues. But they're not: the videos are my renderings of my music editions (of public domain music-- all of it from the 18th century). I even make my own art for the videos (usually an image of the source and I colorize it or do other things in Photoshop). So right now I have to manually appeal EACH video. And I've done that with two of them so far. But my question is: what happens in the future as I generate more video content? Anyone know of a better way to do this? I assume record labels must have some sort of automatic flag posting approval for any content they post. And you can't just call up a customer service agent at Youtube. Although considering the amount of money involved for Google from Youtube, I have NO idea why they don't. Does anyone know of a work-around or a better way? I know you were asking about horns, but a flute/recorder friend of mine mentioned in passing that the Barenreiter edition of Handel's Water Music has the flute part( (in the G major suite) in the original French violin clef and it was for a flute tuned to G. [Finale] O.T. Baroque music / Trumpets in F major
Hi everyone: I am editing a Johann Samuel Endler symphony for Trumpet in F (the orchestral part in Endler's hand is in C major, but a large F written by Clarino. There are two horns, timpani, oboe solo concertante, violin solo concertante, 1/2 violins, and basso continuo (no violas). The trumpet part is extremely high. The music is more rococo than say the 3rd Brandenburg concerto, but at some parts, just as difficult. How common are such pieces for F major trumpets? Is it pretty rare? And in the last 18 months, with our fourth CD out (which admittedly hit a small nail, it was the Dussek String Quartets, never previously recorded) we are actually making money. Not much, but enough to keep going. The Dussek CD will need a second pressing probably early next year, that means we have probably sold around 800 through distribution (the rest is for after concert sales etc), of the 1000 we had made. How did you find a proper distributor? Could you go into what the requirements are for a distributor? How to they handle royalties? It sounds like going to that system really worked for you. Incidentally this is not only because of the added European market, we sell most of our CDs in the US. We are also in iTunes, but sell very few that way. My distributor told me there are a few Euros to be made, but nothing compared to the hardware. The odd thing is that classical music sells so well on iTunes! I heard a significant portion of iTunes sales is classical. Something like 15 percent (I may have that wrong though). Congrats too on the success of your CD sales! I don't know how classical record labels (e.g. CPO in Germany or Hyperion in U.K) make any money. I entertained the idea of getting a small string ensemble together to attempt a complete recording of the Graupner string ouvertures, but I quickly dropped the idea when I started seeing what the costs were. And the odd thing is that right now, technology has made it *SO* easy to do your own recordings and editing. Hi everyone: I have a question about a Rondeau that I'm currently editing. Here is a screenshot of the movement: http://i42.tinypic.com/68xwz9.jpg The first section makes sense, but Graupner starts the next section with a repeat bar. But that section really doesn't get played again. The da capo tells you to go back to play A and then you start at the next section (C). Should I really include the repeat bar at the beginning of the B section? My hunch is that's Graupner way of notating a different section, although I don't know why he just didn't use a double bar (and he uses them in his music). Thanks for any suggestions. But my issue is that sometimes when I save the file, or generate a PDF, the tiff gets moved on the page. But if I close the file, and reopen it-- everything is ok. Very strange. Not an issue, right? Well, when I sent the Word doc to my editor via G mail, he said the music manuscript tiff and the text box were obviously in the wrong place. I know G mail uses a zipping utility now, it seems everything my editor sends me now I have to unzip. So is there someway I can lock the Word doc contents so the layout doesn't get changed? He has no idea how to read the movement, and asked me how it would be performed. He is very familiar with early music too (his dissertation was on Zerlino). Good day: I'm quite behind the times: I just discovered that H.C. Robbins-Landon passed away last November. I was a big fan of his Haydn 5 vol biography that was huge. I remember there were a lot of musical examples provided in those books. My question is: back in the 1970s when the Haydn biography was printed, were publishers using plates for such music score examples? I remember my college weekly newspaper was using a very clunky computer- it would churn out small ribbons of tape with the graphics on it, which were in turn glued to a sticky piece of paper. So I would imagine that a large book company during this period was using much more sophisticated computers for text, but again-- what were they doing for music; and how would they marry computer generated mock-ups of text with plate engraving? I had written to him previously about possible ideas for recording some editions of my music, but typically most of my E-mails went ignored-- I never heard back. Of course, when I initially wrote to him that I had the file he needed, he wrote back within 30 minutes. Well, it's been nearly a month and a half and I haven't been paid yet. [Finale] O.T. Telemann's Heroic Marches / Heldenmusic
Good Day: The 12 Heroic Marches by Telemann are a staple for trumpet players and weddings; and the music is recorded a lot on organ/trumpet CDs. Telemann published these 12 (or it could have been 24) marches and offered them for sale in a 1728 flyer. Telemann's ad specifically mentioned that while all of the marches could be played on solo keyboard, there were two treble instruments and in some marches a trumpet and horn part was provided. The only copy of Telemann's print that survived was located in Konigsburg, Germany at the University library. That sizable music collection went up in smoke, but Ernst Paetzold apparently made an arrangement for solo instrument and piano (NOT organ) prior to World War 2 (that is my assumption - I don't know this for a fact), and it was published in Berlin in 1949. While I was looking for around online for editions of this piece, I've noticed there are a lot of arrangements for sale (usually by trumpet or organ players). Since the original Telemann source(s) vanished, I would assume these new arrangements based on Paetzold's edition. Would these be in copyright violation, especially in Europe where they seem to have much tighter restrictions on public domain than here in the United States? I'm curious because I'd like to do an edition myself and base it on the Paetzold, since it's the closest thing we have to the original unfortunately. But would that be legal? Fenton lists.fin...@dfenton.com wrote: But it *has* been done -- some of the Editions Fuzeau facsimiles are of early printed editions, and the facsimile text is lightly edited (with suitable notes in the extensive commmentaries). My guess is that out of tens of thousands of notes in Telemann's printing of the Table Music, (he engraved it himself), there were a few mistakes that will be annotated in a critical report. I'm guessing those mistakes were discovered when DG Archiv recorded these in the late 1980s. For what its worth: Telemann's 1736 publication of six suites which was long believed to have been lost, has been recovered from a single print in Moscow. A new edition has been published and Pavel Serbin and his ensemble Pratum Integrum has recorded all of the suites on SACDs with the Caro Mitus label. I have no idea when they will be available here in the United States. The works are scored for string orchestra with 2 horns. I'm just hoping a single copy of Telemann's Heroic Marches will show up in Russian archives. All the performances you hear at concerts, weddings, and on CDs, is based on an arrangment of 12 of the marches (apparently there were 24) and other instruments were included. This arrangement was done prior to WW2. A single surviving original print was destroyed at the University of Konigsburg, Germany in 1945. But there are rumors the library contents were removed to Russia for safekeeping. Thanks Kim ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Re: [Finale] Trumpet question
There's a fascinating reading of the Bach Brandenburg 3rd from 1953 on the DG-Archiv label with the Konzertgruppe der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis Conducted by: August Wenzinge. I am not sure if these are period instruments though. EMI Recordings has released some recordings dating from the 1920s that are even more fascinating to hear. I think in some peformances, a saxophone was used because trumpet players couldn't handle the difficult part? BTW: I LOVE the font used on the Archiv sleeve during this period, it reminds me a lot of Barenreiter's elegant fonds used in their Urtext editions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxWjGjmSIWEfeature=related Thanks Kim ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

I think the recorder is much closer to the mic than the trumpet (and everybody else, for that matter) - it has an unusual presence. It's funny you mentioned the recorder-- there's another clip with Maurice Andre, and instead of a recorder, a modern flute is used, which to my ears, doesn't have the same snap or sizzle or bite a recorder gives the music, which seems odd.
