   * Horn in B—not used
   * Horn in B-flat alto—concert pitch sounds down a whole step from the
 notated pitch
   * Horn in A—sounds down a minor third—bright but more centered
   * Horn in A-flat—rare
   * Horn in G-sounds down a perfect fourth
   * Horn in F-sharp—rare
   * Horn in F—notated just like the modern horn
   * Horn in E—sounds down a minor sixth
   * Horn in E-flat—sounds down a major sixth—full, rich tone color
   * Horn in D—sounds down a minor seventh
   * Horn in D-flat—rare
   * Horn in C basso—sounds down an octave from notated pitch—dark tone
   * Horn in B—rare
   * Horn in B-flat basso—sounds down a major ninth-- very dark, almost
 muffled sound
   * Horn in A basso-- rare

I have never met Horn in C alto and would always assume that Horn in C
meant basso unless there was some evidence to the contrary. Horns in Bb
basso occur in Mozart, Brahms, and R Strauss. I have only ever met A

Re: [Finale] OT: Baroque Articulation

2014-05-20 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
It's such a thorny issue because in many baroque parts, the markings are so
inconsistent (sometimes they are clearly staccato markings, but in a set of
doublet-parts, where there are two copies of violin 1, the same bar will
have wedges / daggers. My editor has suggested to duplicate the markings as
found in the sources and note the inconsistently and let the performers
make their own decisions. Most musicians who are trained in early music or
perform on historical instruments will make their own choices anyway.

Thanks

[Finale] O.T. Leopold Hoffmann Sinfonia thematic index

2012-10-11 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
Good day:

I have discovered there are apparently two thematic indices for
Leopold Hoffmann's symphonies. One was done by a George Cook Kimball
for his dissertation in the mid 1980s, and was included in the Garland
series on the 18th century (general editor Barry S. Brook). But
apparently Alan Badley, who works with Naxos and their publishing arm
(Artaria) prepared another index, but I can't seem to locate this
either as a published book or a dissertation (Badley DID prepare a
index of the concerti for his Ph.D however). I'd be so grateful if
anyone could help find that Badley index for the symphonies, or if
they have any suggestions.

[Finale] Youtube / music videos and revenue sharing question

2012-06-13 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
Hi everyone:

A friend suggested that I do Youtube videos (instructional type), and
make some money that way. Since I already have about 115 videos of
music editions uploaded already I assumed, why not at least monetize
them and get started right away. But apparently if you have music, the
Youtube automated system flags your video, and sends you a review
notice, asking for details. I had to do that about ten times last
night. Then today I get an E-mail from Youtube stating I've been
removed from their revenue sharing plan: because I have so many videos
posted that would would appear to have copyright issues. But they're
not: the videos are my renderings of my music editions (of public
domain music-- all of it from the 18th century). I even make my own
art for the videos (usually an image of the source and I colorize it
or do other things in Photoshop).

So right now I have to manually appeal EACH video. And I've done that
with two of them so far. But my question is: what happens in the
future as I generate more video content? Anyone know of a better way
to do this? I assume record labels must have some sort of automatic
flag posting approval for any content they post. And you can't just
call up a customer service agent at Youtube. Although considering the
amount of money involved for Google from Youtube, I have NO idea why
they don't. Does anyone know of a work-around or a better way?

Thanks for ANY help or suggestions ;)

[Finale] O.T. Acorn system and old files

2011-09-02 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
Good day all:

A non tech savy friend of mine started using music engraving many years ago

He has *hundreds of files* now that he can't open. There was a PC software

had to be constantly changed, etc).

Recently, he came across a Linux version of the Acorn program and the

I would think the best option would be to find an old Acorn system, and
somehow load the files and simply print them out. and scan them into either
Finale or Sibelius.

Would anyone have suggestions or advice?

it's only a guess, based on the context) is that
it's some kind of articulation mark, as you said,

Good day kind Finale users!

I have a question about an Ordonez symphony source. There is a squiggly line
above two notes, almost like a tie, but it's not.

It's used several times and my editor and publisher is stumped by it (and
he's a violinist).

Any guesses?

Yeah, 1.5 lbs. OOoo how WILL I lift that laptop!?

The bundled software on Windows PCs is crapware -- free stuff that is
intended as marketing to get people to buy the pay version.

The bundled software on Macs is REAL SOFTWARE that is very well-
designed, full-featured, and not installed as an enticement to buy
 the pro version.

So what? I stated it's not anything I would use either on the PC or
MAC, regardless of what type it is. But here's a free clue:
I could still buy several software applications as good as what's on
the Mac and still come out ahead. But it's a moot point:
I don't buy the computer for the software it has, because I already
own copies of what I need and upgrade them as they become obsolete.
And I have a lot more software options than the limited Apple market
(which as I stated going to get more narrow in the future with Lion's
move to isolate viruses in software by limiting even further what
apps they'll offer)

You are not reading for content.

Neither are you.

I've not told you anything about
what you should or should not value, or which computer you should or
 should not buy.

Neither did I. Actually I stated my personal experiences with Apple:
they've not been good. I offered another website as a suggested
vehicle for finding good deals for any platform, I only mentioned a
good deal I found as an example of that. You asked for a hardware
comparison, I gave you one, and then did exactly what you told me not
to do: nitpick on things that are not important and talk about
software as adding value to computer when it's not a factor for my
purchase in the first place. And if they're such great value: why are
they only ten percent of the market share after nearly 25 years in
business? Is the market that wrong? Apple products appeal to a small
but very vocal and loyal fan base.

Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the vernacular use of the term
virus, but the fact is, when somebody talks about needing anti-
virus software on a PC, they mean to protect against malware and
 Trojans and worms.

So, what you really mean is:

Macs CAN have viruses, but they are very rare.

That's because they have such a small market share. Why bother writing
viruses, maleware, etc that would only affect 10 percent of

5400-rpm drive4
8x slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

300.00 versus 999.00

The Mac is slightly lighter, has a harder polycarbonate plastic case.
Big deal. Not worth spending the 600 dollars I saved, because I'm not
in the habit of throwing my property around. And I'm not swayed by any
the bundled software included on the Mac, I don't use that on Windows
either. After all, I don't buy computers for software, I buy them for,

Or you going to nitpick this to death and tell me why the features I
think are not important are really not important? Being the betting
man that I am, I'm willing to predict yes.

That does not mean that some people won't find the cheapo PC fine for
their needs. It only means that the conventional wisdom about Macs
 being more expensive is WRONG.

Not really, I've seen some of the articles about that, and most of the
comparisons are crap. Ya know Apples and Oranges ? *Wink wink wink* I

Apple is consistently rated like #1 in its products and stores

So your point about Apple's limited warranty and offering extended

great. Moving on.
And there are plenty of Consumer Reports Recommended Buys for PC

You do know that windows generally needs to be reinstalled if you

So what? A lot of the software is pre-installed anyway, and that's not
a factor in buying an Apple product? I've known Apple users that had

I mentioned earlier many on the list appear to install upgrades or

And what fantasy world did you pull this BS about lion being more
restrictive? I think 10.7 (Lion) will work across all mac nade within
 the last 4 years

You missed my point: Apple is going to a more restrictive model for
what software it will offer to sell on its Apps store: that means even
less software will be available in the future.
I live in the fantasy world where I can buy a computer that's cheaper,
runs more software and doesn't box me in.

[Finale] Windows 7 / RAM / Finale installation issues

2011-05-16 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
Hi everyone:

A friend wrote me about an issue, and hopefully the collective wisdom
of the list could offer a solution:

I have a new Win7 64bit laptop and I just tried to install Finale 2009
on it. The installer barks back at me:

MakeMusic requires that your system has 256MB of RAM in order to run Finale

I have gigabytes of RAM on this machine; most likely this is an issue
reading available RAM in 64bit Windows.

Has anyone else encountered this installation problem? What was the solution?

Hi everyone:

I am editing a Johann Samuel Endler symphony for Trumpet in F (the

There are two horns, timpani, oboe solo concertante, violin solo
concertante, 1/2 violins, and basso continuo (no violas).

The trumpet part is extremely high. The music is more rococo than say
the 3rd Brandenburg concerto, but at some parts, just as difficult.

How common are such pieces for F major trumpets? Is it pretty rare?

How did you find a proper distributor? Could you go into what the

How to they handle royalties? It sounds like going to that system

Incidentally this is not only because of the added European market, we sell

[Finale] O.T. Secco recitatives

opera? Although I'm not all that familiar with the romantic period, I
offered as a suggestion that they ended with Rossini? I've seen Norma
in a live performance, and the recitatives seemed to be completely
orchestrated. I suggested to my friends, that the demise of keyboard
recitative was due to several factors, including the larger opera
houses, and louder instruments that were used in romantic period
orchestras (plus the larger orchestras too). Could anyone else throw
some light on this?

Here is a screenshot of the movement: http://i42.tinypic.com/68xwz9.jpg

The first section makes sense, but Graupner starts the next section
with a repeat bar. But that section really doesn't get played again.
The da capo tells you to go back to play A and then you start at the
next section (C). Should I really include the repeat bar at the
beginning of the B section? My hunch is that's Graupner way of
notating a different section, although I don't know why he just didn't
use a double bar (and he uses them in his music).

Thanks for any suggestions.

 think.

Some of the Telemann Frankfurt cantatas are absolute nightmares (wind
instruments at different pitches, organ parts at two pitches), and
handwriting in the scores that is a bit messy to read at times.
Graupner is a piece of cake when you compare his music to other
sources. And Telemann's orchestral suite in G minor TWV g:9 (a rare
autograph score) is an absolute nightmare to read.

Two oboes, followed by staves for 1/2nd violins, viola and continuo:

[Finale] O.T. MS Word 2007 and text boxes/images moving on pages

2010-04-02 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
Good day:

I recently upgraded from MS Office 2000 to 2007. I use Word to
create my edition's critical reports, which routinely include
screenshots of the manuscripts. I insert these as tiffs. with a
caption under the tiff that's generated within a text box, which I
manually tweek its position by clicking on the outline of the text box
until I'm happy. But my issue is that sometimes when I save the file,
or generate a PDF, the tiff gets moved on the page. But if I close the
file, and reopen it-- everything is ok. Very strange. Not an issue,
right?

Well, when I sent the Word doc to my editor via G mail, he said the
music manuscript tiff and the text box were obviously in the wrong
place. I know G mail uses a zipping utility now, it seems everything
my editor sends me now I have to unzip. So is there someway I can
lock the Word doc contents so the layout doesn't get changed? I'm
using a PC and not a Mac.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks

One thing that could help is embeding your fonts. This makes the file

How do you embed a font into a Word document? I know you have that
option for a PDF.

A friend off list suggested 2007 uses a format called docx that
allows collaboration and markups. Try saving as an older style Word
document, rather than docx (which is the default). I had never

Hi alI:

About a year ago, I showed a copy of one of my Graupner editions to
my former supervisior (Ph.D. in musicology from Columbia)-- where I
duplicated the autograph score (i.e. no written out repeats of the A
section, and Da Capos under each section). He has no idea how to read
the movement, and asked me how it would be performed. He is very
familiar with early music too (his dissertation was on Zerlino). After
this, when I suggested to my publisher that maybe we should write out
all the A sections, he insisted early music performers would know
how to perform the music, and the instrumental parts could be modified
as ordered (i.e to write everything out) if requested.

[Finale] Text expressions : 'poco' italic or not?

Hi all:

I am working on some 18th century manuscripts, many times I will see
poco F or poco piano or poco forte. The default text setting in

aren't italics traditionally seen as editorial additions, wouldn't
having poco in italics be wrong if the wording is actually present

[Finale] Off Topic: H.C. Robbins-Landon / Haydn biography and music engraving

2010-03-05 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
Good day:

I'm quite behind the times: I just discovered that H.C. Robbins-Landon
passed away last November. I was a big fan of his Haydn 5 vol
biography that was huge. I remember there were a lot of musical
examples provided in those books. My question is: back in the 1970s
when the Haydn biography was printed, were publishers using plates for
such music score examples? I remember my college weekly newspaper was
using a very clunky computer- it would churn out small ribbons of tape
with the graphics on it, which were in turn glued to a sticky piece of
paper. So I would imagine that a large book company during this period
was using much more sophisticated computers for text, but again-- what
were they doing for music; and how would they marry computer generated
mock-ups of text with plate engraving?

[Finale] O.T. Advice sought on a conductor who will not pay his bill

2010-02-21 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
Hi everyone:

About two months ago, a conductor who I have as a friend on Facebook
said he needed a score to a concerto in a hurry ( I assume for a
concert project) and could anyone help him? I wrote to him that I had
the file, and if he was agreeable to the fee of 100.00 USD, I'd send
it to him. I had written to him previously about possible ideas for
recording some editions of my music, but typically most of my E-mails
went ignored-- I never heard back. Of course, when I initially wrote
to him that I had the file he needed, he wrote back within 30 minutes.
Well, it's been nearly a month and a half and I haven't been paid yet.
I've written two very polite E-mail reminders and they've gone
unanswered. This morning his Facebook page had a posting about a
conducting gig he was occupied for a week. My first E-mail reminder
pointed out that I was recently laid off from my full time job, and as
an independent researcher, any freelance money for projects I do now
is very important.

I have heard some horror stories through the grapevine about
cheap-skate conductors that don't live up to their word and will
generally not pay bills and of course they get a reputation for being
jerks. While I fault myself for not requiring a payment in advance
now, should I comment on this conductor's Facebook page and ask why
he's ignoring my Emails and requests for payment? I'd hate to put
anyone on a spot like that in such a public forum, but I want my
money.

[Finale] O.T. Telemann's Heroic Marches / Heldenmusic

2009-10-01 Thread Kim Patrick Clow
Good Day:

The 12 Heroic Marches by Telemann are a staple for trumpet players and
weddings; and the music is recorded a lot on organ/trumpet CDs.
Telemann published these 12 (or it could have been 24) marches and
offered them for sale in a 1728 flyer. Telemann's ad specifically
mentioned that while all of the marches could be played on solo
keyboard, there were two treble instruments and in some marches a
trumpet and horn part was provided.

The only copy of Telemann's print that survived was located in
Konigsburg, Germany at the University library. That sizable music
collection went up in smoke, but Ernst Paetzold apparently made an
arrangement for solo instrument and piano (NOT organ) prior to World
War 2 (that is my assumption - I don't know this for a fact), and it
was published in Berlin in 1949. While I was looking for around online
for editions of this piece, I've noticed there are a lot of
arrangements for sale (usually by trumpet or organ players). Since
the original Telemann source(s) vanished, I would assume these new
arrangements based on Paetzold's edition. Would these be in copyright
violation, especially in Europe where they seem to have much tighter
restrictions on public domain than here in the United States?

I'm curious because I'd like to do an edition myself and base it on
the Paetzold, since it's the closest thing we have to the original
unfortunately. But would that be legal?

Thanks,
Kim

printing of the Table Music,
(he engraved it himself), there were a few mistakes that will be
annotated in a critical report. I'm guessing
those mistakes were discovered when DG Archiv recorded these in the late 1980s.

For what its worth: Telemann's 1736 publication of six suites which
was long believed to have been lost,
has been recovered from a single print in Moscow. A new edition has
been published and Pavel Serbin
and his ensemble Pratum Integrum has recorded all of the suites on
SACDs with the Caro Mitus label.
I have no idea when they will be available here in the United States.
The works are scored for string orchestra
with 2 horns.

I'm just hoping a single copy of Telemann's Heroic Marches will show
up in Russian archives. All the performances
you hear at concerts, weddings, and on CDs, is based on an arrangment
of 12 of the marches (apparently there
were 24) and other instruments were included. This arrangement was
done prior to WW2. A single surviving original print was destroyed at
the University of Konigsburg, Germany in 1945. But there are rumors
the library contents were removed to Russia
