RE: [Finale] Getting a good guitar sound

2007-01-17 Thread Richard Yates
I cannot be a lot of help, I 'm afraid. I recently moved up to a new
computer and have yet to sort out the audio issues. I had a SoundBlaster
Live! card that I moved to new computer (it has digital out for my speakers)
but I cannot seem to access its soundbank.

The Audigy card is installed also but I cannot find it in audio devices.
They may be conflicting with each another somehow.

Try looking at programs -> creative -> soundblaster audigy ADVANCED MB ->
soundfont bank manager, and try to install the Milburn-normal.sf2 there.

Hi Richard,
I should have known that you'd be the one that could help me since you
help a lot on this great list. Both of your sound fonts would work real good
for me. Didn't know how or where to install the Milburn-normal.SF2 font. I'd
like to be able to use it in any program I have on my computer of course.
How much do you charge for the font? How much for the 32MB font? Can you
advise me on how to install it or them in the right place on my computer? I
have winfinale 2006b on a winXP computer with an Audigy sound card.

Thanks so much for your help.

You will not find a good guitar sound in collections. After long search I
finally gave up and made my own soundfont. You can download it at:

http://www.yatesguitar.com/misc/Milburn-normal.SF2 (4.7MB)

Note that this only has 'normal' tone. The complete soundfont (32MB) has
other patches for staccato, ponticello, tasto, gliss, vibrato, etc. Demos
using the complete font can be heard at:

http://www.yatesguitar.com/misc/Arabe-Demo.mp3 (a very cheesy

Have you tried a sampling synthesizer? I use a Kurtzweil 2500 but there are
lots, either a keyboard or just a rack mount.

Re: [Finale] Getting a good guitar sound

2007-01-16 Thread Peter Taylor
George,

The programs you mention (Finale, PowerTracks, BIAB etc) do not generate the
sounds - they simply send instructions to something called a "MIDI Device",
which converts the instructions into sounds. MIDI devices can be either a
piece of hardware (such as a soundcard inside your computer or an external box
of electronics) or maybe a special software program. You can see which MIDI
device Finale is using if you click on MIDI in the top Menu bar and click on
MIDI Setup... The sound you are hearing is being made by the device listed in
the box marked MIDI Out.

If you click on the little down arrow at the right of the MIDI Out box you will
see a list of the devices installed on your machine. You can try choosing any
of these and then play your file to see if the sound it makes is any more to
your liking.

If they all still sound like a piano then the problem is probably in your file
- you may not have set up instrumental sounds for each of the staves in your
score. To do this, click on Window in the menu bar and choose Instrument List
and you'll see a list of the staves and the instrument sounds for each one (if
not, click on the button View by Staves at the bottom of the screen). Make
sure a guitar sound is selected for your guitar staff (for example enter 25 in
the column marked Prog to get a Nylon Guitar sound), check the box at the
bottom marked "Send patches before Play" then click on the X box at the top
right corner to close the window.

Hope this solves the problem!
Peter

Um, purchase a better software sampler? Native Instruments Bandstand, or
Garritan Jazz Band. There are a lot of choices out there. The built in
Finale sounds are, um, to be nice, very dated.
