Re: [Finale] Need help with HP LJ 5000 and MacOS Mojave

2019-05-08 Thread Johannes Gebauer
To everyone who offered help: I seem to have solved the problem by
restarting the router. To be honest, this makes very little sense to me
(since only my Mojave Mac had any problems), and I still fear it may not
work after a while, but at least this way I can now access the web
interface.

If it stops working again my suspicion is that it all has to do with the
implementation of Rendezvous, now called Bonjour, aka mDNS. In that case
I will start by switching that off, which can be done in the web interface.

I am glad I did this before resetting the printing system or using the
migration assistant, since both these would probably have lost all my
other printer setups as well, which I was trying to avoid.

Anyhow, thanks to all!

Re: [Finale] Need help with HP LJ 5000 and MacOS Mojave

2019-05-06 Thread Fiskum, Steve
Like I said, I'm not sure where the link is that I used several years ago to
fix this problem. When I had this issue I thought all of the same thoughts you
expressed about "pinging", network issue (or non-issues) and drivers but like I
said, it was all resolved when transporting the printer settings from a machine
in my office that already worked with the printer, which it sounds like you
have another machine that currently does. BTW-it doesn't matter if the other
machine is an older OS.

I"ll try to give you a step by step but I don't really know your setup:

1. The machine that can still print to the HP - put that in Target Mode.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462

https://www.howtogeek.com/214322/how-to-boot-your-mac-in-target-disk-mode-for-easy-file-transfers/

2. On your Mojave machine open Migration Assistant.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350

3. Select "From a Mac..."

4. Select the machine you have in target mode.

5. Input the security code that may come up.

6. Uncheck all of the items to transfer. Go to the bottom where it says
"Computer & Network Settings" and open the arrow.

7. Select Printer settings.

8. Click Continue.

That should bring your old printer settings over, even if it's coming from an
older OS. Once you've done this, your printer should work. I'm not sure what's
missing or what was different in the transfer but I was very surprised after
days of tearing my hair out that it "just worked." After I got it setup, I did
go back and update the drivers if they needed it...but the 5000 hasn't been
updated in a long time.

Good luck.

Dear Steve,

I really don't understand what you did to make it work. As far as I can
see the problem is not really a driver problem, but a problem of network
communication with the printer. Even without any drivers I should be
able to ping the printer and talk to the web interface - which my Mac
cannot.

How could I migrate this? Can you give me a step-by-step?

Re: [Finale] Need help with HP LJ 5000 and MacOS Mojave

2019-05-06 Thread David Froom
Johannes,
I am following with interest because I still use my HP LJ 5000, though I’m
still on Sierra (10.12.6).

My computer (2015 MacBook Pro) also does not have an ethernet connection, but I
made one by buying a Thunderbolt-to-ethernet adapter. This _might_ work, or it
might not. Maybe worth a try? I’ve not been able to use wifi for my HP LJ 5000
because my router is some distance from where the printer lives, so I can’t
plug the printer directly into the router.

In my most recent computer upgrades, I did use the migration assistant. Someone
already suggested that you find that. It SHOULD be on your computer if you
search, but it is likely in your Applications/Utilities folder. I believe you
can set it to migrate limited things, so, perhaps, only your printer settings
from your backup or old computer (or wife’s computer)? I don’t know, and I
would be really careful doing this, making sure you don’t make things worse!

In the meantime, given the emergency deadlines, can you print using printer
share, routing through your wife’s computer? Or more direct, just bring pdfs
over to her computer for your print jobs?

That printer is a remarkable thing. 12x18, good resolution, fast, and it just
keeps working, decade after decade.

Good luck — and please keep us informed!! I would love to know how you solved
what seems to be a Mojave issue.

I had problems with my Lexmark printer after upgrading to High Sierra. What I
earned is that not all printers are compatible with the Mac OS. Apple
published a list of compatible printers when High Sierra was released. Is the
HP printer in question on that list?
BTW, I resolved the issue by buying a new printer.

I guess the printer may have some serial and parallel connectors, but I
wouldn't know how to connect it to a modern Mac. It is definitely pre-USB...

It is a network printer, that's the way it is usually connected.

It's just a thought, and I'm not a Mac person so it may be a silly
suggestion but it seems everything else has failed so I thought I'd put
it out there as a possibility. If you can hook up directly and it does
print from your macbook then you'll know it's a network issue with
Mojave. If you can hook up directly and still can't print then you'll
know it's a Mojave/HPLJ5000 issue that you'd most likely need to take up
with HP (which will probably tell you to contact Apple) or with Apple
(which will most likely tell you to contact HP.)

Please keep us posted with whatever else you find out because I'm sure
you're not the only person with that problem.

2019-05-05 Thread Johannes Gebauer
On my wife's computer I get what I assume is the normal ping response
with a ms-value for each ping.

My Macbook like my wife's is connected via WIFI, mine doesn't even have
an ethernet connection.

Everything worked fine until I upgraded to Mojave.

The WIFI in the house consists of

A Fritzbox router connected to the DSL
Another Fritzbox router used as a WIFI repeater, where the printer is
connected via ethernet.

My Macbook lives in the same room as that repeater fritzbox, so it
usually connects to that WIFI.

There is also a little Fritz WIFI repeater, which is what my wife's
computer is connected through.

Just to make sure that this doesn't play a role, I took my computer into
that room, it connected to the WIFI through the little repeater (the
Fritzbox can show the Mesh-setup in detail). No change, it could still
not access the printer. The WIFI access was now identical to my wife's
Mac, at least in terms of where the computer was connected in relation
to the printer.

Ergo, I am pretty sure it has to do with the computer's setup, or Mojave
itself. There must be a setting I have overlooked, which prevents the
computer from talking properly to the printer.

Dear Robert,

well, since noone else reported problems of their HP 5000 I assumed
there must be drier compatibility. However, the real test right now is
accessing the web interface of the printer, which works from my wife's
Mac, and even from my iphone, but not from my own Mac. Now, this is
definitely not a driver issue, as no driver needs to be installed.

So what is it? I can access all other internal network addresses from my
mac just fine.

This is driving me nuts, I desperately need to print some music out.

That does sound more like network settings. Can you access any addresses on
your local wireless network? (Like the router address?)

Another update: Disabling the firewall makes no difference.

I can also not access the web interface of the printer from my Mojave
Mac, while it can be accessed easily from my wife's El Capitan machine.

There must be a setting here that I haven't found, and it is obviously
not a driver issue.

Yup. The fact that is does indeed work on your wife’s computer is telling.
I’m still running Sierra due to incompatibility here with APFS and older OS’s
on my network. So I can’t help with Mojave sadly.

Yes, config page is as it should be, and the printer works fine in the
same network from my wife's Mac with El Capitan. So it must be either
