You could consider just adding them > (unzipped) in a specific subfolder of the repository, or create a > separate repository for this. Ahm actually, I was asking PaulV that question...you may not be aware that we don't do CHM, but the ODBC fans seem to like them. Our DocBook system doesn't produce it but it turned out to be relatively simple to produce from the html that it does generate. I could probably produce VS help from them as well, some other time when I'm in an experimental frame of mind. Of course, both the CHM and VS help compilers are proprietary Microsoft products, so some might say it would be evil to encourage these people. ;-) So I was really just sounding out Paul as to where he thought might be a good place to put the source files for the CHM file - obviously (I thought) *where?* relative to the parent docbook source from which they evolved. A different repository does not make any sense. Tainted or not, it is still Firebird documentation. Over the weekend I did some commits. a few things: Paul, when you have a moment, could you look at what I did: 1. Added fbodbc205 to refdocs.xml. I did all this with pushing from my local repo. Where should I put them? I'll write a little readme. The other thing is - we don't seem to have a notification channel for checkins to this repository. Can something similar be done for this one as was done for the main Firebird repo? (After a lot of messing about, we finally got main repo notifications coming into firebird-checkins a few weeks ago. I'm not sure they are perfect yet, though) I'll need to do another lot, for the Developer's Guide, when I get the go-ahead from Denis. It's good to go Beta for reviewing, as far as I'm concerned, but I understand Denis still has a meaty job to do translating his source code downloads. That doesn't affect the production of the book at all, except that every chapter ends with a link to the respective source code pack and they are all at some stage of being re-done. I haven't heard from Denis for a couple of weeks, so I don't know exactly where we're at. I have managed to normalize these files so future > updates to these files should not cause a large-scale whitespace update. I downloaded the zip from your repository and looked at a few of the .docbook files from the v.3.0.2 release notes with the editor I use for creating and updating them. They look OK to me. The ReadMe file in the base directory has messed-up line-endings, though. I guess we'll need to test what happens when one of the (currently good) source files gets updated. We definitely cannot do with extraneous white space in those files. Using the Github Desktop, I couldn't access the local copy of the unpacked zipfile but I cloned a new repository off it, which created the three git config files. It didn't copy anything else, so I file-copied all of the unpacked filesystem (except the git configuration files) into it. That sort of worked and it was able to link back to your github repository and log me in from the local config. I'm sure that's not how it's done but at least I am comfortable with the migrated file formats and filesystem structure, so far. It looks possible that I will be able to sync the working source files with the git ones, much as I was doing with CVS and SVN. I guess I have to say (to quote my ex-Navy husband) "that's life in a blue suit." My preference would have been to convert to SVN and leave the repository on Sourceforge - don't fix what aint broke. But Github seems to dominate our (project) lives these days. Currently, with the CVS and SVN clients I use - necessarily on Windows, since our doc app is Windows-based - I can commit, check out, etc. from a right click on the /manual/ subdir, or any subdir beneath it. Given that I'm committing to multiple projects, this is a blessing that I will miss badly. After all these months with the core project on GitHub, I have yet to succeed in downloading the repository AT ALL to access the readme files in the core tree for use in the release notes. I have to rely on Dmitry sending me a link, from which I can view a file and copy/paste it into my local resource directory for that version. As for code control, I currently keep two copies of the /manual/ branch: one for working on and the other which I sync with the working one before committing. I have no idea how I will manage with the Github thing. Any docs I have read so far (and I have not tried in recent months) assumes that one is working on the entire source code tree. I do NOT want to keep a current copy of the entire tree. To consult core source code, it is simple for me to find what I want in the repository and copy/paste it, since I never commit changes to that code. I guess I just have to work something out. This is about the worst week Mark could have picked, from my POV, as I'm already burning the midnight oil on other project infrastructure problems and TRYING (in conjunction with Denis Simonov) to sort out the Ringlish translation of the FB Developer's Guide. Note that Denis will have to be "in" on any changes as, this time around, he is planning to convert the Word text to DocBook himself and (presumably) commit the DocBook source once he has built it successfully. Amongst other things, he has quite a number of screenshots there which, of course, are binary files. I have no idea how GH deals with image files but I guess we are going to find out soon enough. I can't walk him through it myself, since I am clueless about how it's going to work. If there's a good reason to change, I'd go with it, albeit it currently aint broke so there be nothing to fix. PaulV has it nicely set up for use by the translators and it is all well documented, enough so that those of us who actually DO stuff regularly, rather than just talk about doing it, have our local setups that are more or less automated. One of us can always step in to assist people who don't want to work with a repository for whatever reason. I don't see how changing the repository would (or should) alter that. My personal experience so far with GitHub is that it is a dog to work with, actually, given that I don't upload or download any programming code, only documentation. I guess if I had to, I'd find a way to make it useful for me to use. I just can't think of a good reason right now to spend time and energy on creating a solution to a non-existent problem. I prefer the second version too. It uses a bit more real estate but it means one doesn't have to keep reverting to the top-level TOC if browsing for a specific function while not knowing exactly the one you want. I guess time will tell, once we see the feature in action with the whole book and in the PDF. Got your corrections for the BIN* functions, thanks. I will probably defer a new build until I have the new template on board. Helen -- Mobile security can be enabling, not merely restricting. To those currently reviewing and translating the Language Reference, I have put up new PDF and HTML builds today - build 0.904 - and have updated the sources in CVS - see the diff file I sent to the list. He's also one of our most prolific author/editors. At the moment, we have an urgent need for native speakers of English to complete the review of the Fb 2.5 Language Reference. If you could find time to go over the DML, PSQL and Functions chapters (any or all), you would be doing a great service. Some of the DDL chapter (as annotated) still remains to do, as well. It would be beneficial to take this opportunity to do a bit of recap. I'm coordinating this part of this project. What has worked well for the review so far is for the reviewer to keep a text file containing the existing text and his suggestions for improvements, corrections, et al. It is easiest to work with the PDF, quoting PDF page numbers and the immediate heading. Paul and Mark have been sending these files directly to me (hele...@iinet.net.au). For pieces that have already been reviewed, people just post the corrections directly to this list. As I complete a list of changes/reviews, I am posting the latest Docbook source to CVS and building a fresh set of PDF and HTML output to update the Docs at the web site. I hope to have a fresh build ready this weekend, touch wood. The released source code will become the base version for translations and future updates. Martin Koeditz and his colleagues have already begun the German, I believe. I think Tsutomu Hayashi is standing by to start on the Japanese. Dennis Simonov is translating back into Russian, with the Fb3 version in his sights. (The current Fb 2.5 text originated in Russian but not in Docbook format.) I think it is safe to proceed with translating the chapters and sections that have already been reviewed by Paul and Mark. That said, a few "tweaks" affecting those parts have been appearing. For example, I have a small list from Aage that will appear in the next update. > > Just for interest: > > Is there a script or something else refreshing the docs > automatically at night? Will they be updated after someone pushes > changed contents to the SVN repository? The Docs sources are in the CVS repository, not SVN. So far, the changes since the first Beta have been minimal and I have been re-posting the change report here. That tells you which file has changed and shows the old and new text. I am the only one pushing changes in the English sources. I am not tracking anyone else's changes and I hope I don't need to, whilst the langref is still in Beta. If a translator finds something missing or wrong in the checked sections, it is very important that you report it here so that the English source can be amended and all the other translators know about it. Note, also, that the publication date and the document version change whenever I push an updated version. That shows up in one or more of the CVS reports and also in the PDF, of course. The file that contains that information is fblangref25.xml. That is how is goes, for now. I am open to any better ideas Helen -- Transform Data into Opportunity. You can ssafely begin work on the completed chapters, which are as follows: fblangref25.xml fblangref25-intro.xml fblangref25-structure.xml fblangref25-datatypes.xml fblangref25-commons.xml fblangref25-ddl.xml, up to the completion of the PROCEDURE section then fblangref25-security.xml fblangref25-appx01-supplement.xml fblangref25-appx02-errorcodes.xml fblangref25-appx03-reskeywords.xml fblangref25-appx04-systables.xml fblangref25-appx05-montables.xml fblangref25-appx06-charsets.xml fblangref25-appx07-license.xml fblangref25-dochist.xml These chapters are still awaiting the technical and editorial review: fblangref25-dml.xml fblangref25-psql.xml fblangref25-functions-vars.xml fblangref25-transacs.xml We will update as more reviewed material evolves. Any English speakers who want to help us through these remaining chapters, we would love to hear from you. (Post a msg here). Huge thanks to everyone who made this happen. Re: [Firebird-docs] Firebird 3 Authentication: passwords
Hi Stefan, I'm just reading through the Firebird 3 release notes. The chapter about Increased Password Length speaks of a maximum of 20 bytes. The second blue box in this chapter then asks: **Why is the password effectively limited to 20 characters? It is unclear from this documentation if this is about bytes or characters. What character set is used for storing passwords? Are these restricted to 7-Bit US-ASCII? (in this case, the number of bytes and characters would be the same). OTTOMH, password hashes are stored using character set OCTETS. No other charset would make sense, methinks. That would still leave open the possibility to enter passwords in multibyte charsets, but I don't know if this is supported. If it is, the 'effective length' as explained in the RelNotes would be 20 bytes, not characters. (I hope this is the right forum for this question, if not, please give me a hint.) No, it's not the right forum. The way it's documented now is what finally satisfied Alex Peshkov. Btw, we are talking about CHARACTERS, not bytes. There was argument in firebird-admin, since the potential length of passwords is now longer than anyone would remember and if you have to keep a file and copy/paste in order to log in, it all seems a bit much... Effective length has to do with the decoding algorithm (for potential brute force hacking, natch), although I haven't figured out exactly how. Alex insists that it's pointless having a pw longer than about 20 characters. So ask him on fb-devel and I'll watch and we might drag out something a bit more useful for the RC1 notes. Re: [Firebird-docs] Firebird 3 QSG source
At 09:52 a.m. 23/07/2015, Paul Vinkenoog wrote: Hi all, Could someone please email me the file qsg3.xml (or quickstartguide-3.xml, or whatever) which lives in the manual/src/docs/firebirddocs directory of our CVS module? I'm on a slow and very unreliable link here and I've been struggling for hours to wrest this file from the *@$#@!! SourceForge servers, to no avail. The Web interface seems disappeared and they've set out a trail of false pointers in their online documentation. The CVS server just times out or hangs up on me. If someone could pick up this file from the repos (it's fairly recent) and get it to me so I can work on it, I'd be most grateful. In case anyone missed it, SF has been down for about a week, with little bits coming back up in fits and starts. I see CVS is still down. The mail lists (that are administered by me and some ghosts) finally came up a few hours ago so maybe it won't be too much longer till cvs and svn come up. Paul, sorry, my last update was in April so there's no sign of any qsg stuff for Fb 3. Oh, and a bit of happy news. The first half of the all-singing, all-dancing Language Reference is translated, edited and converted to Docbook. I should receive the rest of the raw translation next week or so. Re: [Firebird-docs] Choosing the translation service
At 09:37 p.m. 10/11/2014, Alexey Kovyazin wrote: Hi All, As you know, we are going to translate recently completed Firebird Language Reference in Russian into English. For this purpose we are working with translation services. I need input from English speakers (native and not native :) about quality of the following test translation from one of the services: https://yadi.sk/i/uh1WeVY9ccChv Obviously, this translation needs some additional work, and also we can supply translator with some kind of guideline how to translate certain things in better way, but the question is: should we choose them or need to try another one? On a quick read, 1. I sense that this translator does not have a good command of the use of articles in English (the, a/an, some. and constructs with no article). At best, it makes the text awkward to read for an English native speaker; at worst, the misuse of articles can make a difference to meaning, which could be a problem when translating the English version to other languages. It is a tedious editing task to go through text and correct these errors. (Believe me, I'm doing that all the time!!) If the person is being paid to translate, we should not be put in the position of needing to do such basic corrections. 2. Vocabulary choice in some cases needs to be reviewed. Referring to statements as operators is a bad choice in a language reference. The term operator has a distinct meaning in SQL and it is not that one! Similarly, use of the word events when talking about operations will cause confusion, even to native English speakers, given that the word event has a specific meaning in Firebird's procedural language. I found some other examples where vocab choice was inappropriate. Possibly the translator(s) should be given a set vocab of the terms most used in English for the various concepts. 3. Is the merging of keywords into one invalid word intentional? e.g. DROPPROCEDURE and other examples. If so, why? As far as I can tell, this occurs only in the explanatory text, not in the syntax patterns or the examples. I downloaded the sample, in the hope that I will have more time to study it when I get clear of release notes for a while. Re: [Firebird-docs] Do we ever build release notes all together?
At 04:44 AM 19/10/2011, Paul Vinkenoog wrote: Hi Norman, Sorry, I cannot type: I'm wondering if this is something we might need to fix. I have had a look in rlsnotes20/install/Compatibility20x.docbook where at least one section has an id=compat-sql but I can find no cross refernce (or xref tags) to it anywhere. That should of course read : ... section has an id=rnfbtwo-compat but I can find no cross refernece ... Really? ;-) Can't think of any reason we'd ever want to build release notes all together. However, anyone who has this desire is welcome to do it after my death. ;-) Over the years release notes are a mish-mash of stuff from multiple sources. Things didn't start to come together until Paul sorted out the docbook framework during one of the Fb 1.5 sub-release cycles. At that point I spent a lot of time backporting Word and RTF sources into the framework for both Fb 1.5 and Vulcan. (AFAIR, the Vulcan release notes never made it into CVS.) A new mess began with v.2.1, when the notes that were done were a merger of new stuff in 2.1 and the stuff to date in 2.0.x. At that point, there were no Lang Updates so the merger was done to meet demand and the Ref Manual project was being subjected to a lengthy assassination. At that point also, the 2.0.x series was still being treated as an interim step towards the evolving new architectures. There was no expectation that 2.0.x would have six sub-releases and 2.1 would still be alive in 2011! It was further complicated by breaking out the bug fixes and compatibility/migration notes into separate documents. That was done to appease the kit builders who were complaining about the size of the PDF. Since then, it's not so relevant as I have NitroPDF and can shrink PDFs if there are complaints about their size. Furthermore, they took to including the Lang Updates in the kits and *those* are not getting any smaller! The id duplications occur (mostly) because the earlier 2.0 tags are repeated in the 2.1 notes and I gave up trying to catch them eventually. I doubt I ever will now - it's enough trouble and heartache trying to capture and verify content. ;-) Helen -- All the data continuously generated in your IT infrastructure contains a definitive record of customers, application performance, security threats, fraudulent activity and more.
