Re: [Flashcoders] Re: [Flickr] Your Photo Upload Failed

2006-11-28 Thread Sam Thorne
I've already contacted Flickr about it, and got this response, so we
shouldn't get any more bounces:

Hello,

Flickr allows its users to upload photos via email to a
secret email address tied to their account. These can be
uploads from a cameraphone or other device, or a script, or
a regular ol' email client. When we encounter problems with
the upload, we respond back to the email address that the
upload was sent from to let them know. In this case, the
email appeared to be from a mailing list you are a member
of, so the error response got sent there. I've added the
address of your mailing list to our block list to make sure
this doesn't happen again, and gotten in touch with the user
involved to try and figure out if these upload attempts were
done on purpose or not.

Thanks for your report.

Cheers,
Myles

Not so secret anymore then...

RE: [Flashcoders] Image as intro to FLV

2006-11-28 Thread Jason Ross
Hi Greg,

I read your solution with interest because I spent a lot of time looking
into this a while back. It seems if I am not mistaken that the article
by Lisa is only relevant for video being streamed from a Flash
Communication Server, as opposed to a progressive stream from a regular
server (the 'len' argument seems to only apply to FCS streams?).

If this is the case, it's an important point to consider. I may be
wrong, but that is what I could gather from a quick read.

b) How to convert the resulting MP3 into a base64 string
c) How to send the base64 string to my server via XML-RPC

BTW, shall I use AS2 or AS3 for this?

[Flashcoders] [OT] SCM/Project management tool

[Flashcoders] weird htmlText split and join behavior

2006-11-28 Thread GregoryN
Hello all,

I'm upgrading a project from v7 to v8 player. Main reason is better
text readability.
In this project, split().join() combination is used to hide/show some
text (similar to css tricks in normal html).
It works great in player v7, but, when published for v8, all text
becomes underlined...
Here is a test movie (click replace link):
http://gousable.com/flash/temp/flashcoders/split_join_bug/textSplitJoin_1.html

Source:
http://gousable.com/flash/temp/flashcoders/split_join_bug/textSplitJoin1_source.zip

In my (original) movie, all the text also becomes a link...

Code:
// === START OF CODE ===
var lorem_ipsum:String = Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing
elit. Donec vehicula. Nullam orci. Nulla viverra. Curabitur venenatis. Quisque
nisi. Aliquam in turpis a tellus semper cursus. ; Nulla viverra. Curabitur
venenatis. Quisque nisi. Aliquam in turpis a tellus semper cursus. ;

var string2replace:String = brbr*tag_to_replace /*brbr;

var links_area:String = ua href=\asfunction:doReplace,var1\replace: case
#1/a/ubrbr;

// NOTE:
// createTextField() does NOT return a tf object in player v7

// show system info
this.createTextField(sys_info, this.getNextHighestDepth(), 10, 10, 400, 30);
sys_info.text = Flash Player:   +System.capabilities.version;
sys_info.border = true;
sys_info.borderColor = 0xff;

var is_v8_or_later:Boolean = (Number(System.capabilities.version.substr(4,1))
=8) ;
//trace(is_v8player = +is_v8_or_later);
sys_info.text += ,   is_v8_or_later = +is_v8_or_later;

var my_format:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
my_format.font = Verdana;

this.createTextField(my_text1, this.getNextHighestDepth(), 10, 50, 400, 300);
my_text1.multiline = true;
my_text1.wordWrap = true;
my_text1.antiAliasType = advanced;
my_text1.html= true;
my_text1.border = true;
my_text1.borderColor = 0x00ff00;
my_text1.embedFonts = true;

var startText:String =  lorem_ipsum + string2replace + links_area + lorem_ipsum;
my_text1.htmlText = startText;
my_text1.setTextFormat(my_format);

// doReplace
function doReplace(p:String):Void{
 trace(doReplace called);
var tag2replace:String = tag_to_replace /;
var my_replace:String = === Lorem ipsum ===;
my_text1.htmlText= startText.split( tag2replace ).join( my_replace );
my_text1.setTextFormat(my_format);
}

// === END OF CODE ===

What is it - known bug or I'm missing something?
Any help is appreciated.

Re: [Flashcoders] [OT] SCM/Project management tool

2006-11-28 Thread Ian Thomas

Hi Marcelo,
 We use trac/wvn for all our projects and it works very well for us;
and it does support simple user/password authentication.

The only downside is that trac is designed to host only one project -
multiple projects mean multiple databases (if you want to seperate
tickets etc.) and there's no reporting across the multiple databases.
To get around this we've written a very simple front-end which
collates all the 'outstanding tickets' RSS info into one web page, so
each developer can see what's on his ToDo list. :-) It's working very
well.

Cheers,
 Ian

Re: [Flashcoders] How to send Audio objects as MP3 via XML-RPC?

You need an MP3 encoding library. If you want a command line solution
that you may be able to hack to work in a server environment, I'd
look into ffmpeg.

b) How to convert the resulting MP3 into a base64 string

PHP has a base64 library. Look there for starters. I believe you can
pass it an argument to encode a file (which would be the mp3 file on
your server).

To encode the MP3 into a base64 string dynamically is going to kill
your server CPU. You're better off running a chron job on your server
to execute PHP code to encode the file when placed in a certain
directory. If the base64 version is already encoded, don't do
anything, just send the stored encoded version.

c) How to send the base64 string to my server via XML-RPC

I don't know if XML-RPC is not going to handle that amount of data
very effectively. The base64 encoded version of the MP3 file will be
huge.

BTW, shall I use AS2 or AS3 for this?

I don't know if it will matter. Once you have the base64 encoded
string in Flash, what do you plan to do with it? I don't see how
you'll be able to attach it to a sound object. I never tried this
though, so the sound object should be able to take the raw mp3 data
and use it, but who know?

This whole process may be best done with a socket connection with AS3
and using binary data to send the result directly to a sound object.

good luck.

Better thinking (and after taking a deep look into Streber's website),
Streber's seems to be good. I'll take a better look into it later. The good
thing about it is that it's easy to install yet have features equivalent to
trac and is simple as well, don't know if it has svn integration though
(probally not).

Re: [Flashcoders] weird htmlText split and join behavior

2006-11-28 Thread Marcelo Volmaro
V8 of the player (i don´t know 9) seems to have a BIG problem with
textfields. Anytime you modify the contents of an html text field from
WITHING the text field (ie: you are modifying the textfield using a link
on the textfield) the player start doing weird things with the content.

I have the same problem in an html editor i made, where you can click on
the images. The player starts duplicating the image and you will end with
two, three or more images stacked. In your case, the player is duplicating
the link all over the textfield.

Try doing the same but using a button... No problem and all works as
expected.
My solution (because i can´t use a button to edit the image) was to
rebuild the area. Yes... each time you edit an image, i rebuild the entire
textarea...

I did change my loader out to be a loader component because I was still
having focus problems. However just using the following code fixed my green
area problems.

holder._lockroot = true;
holder.loadMovie(test.swf);

Hi,

I had a similar problem with a site that I was trying to load in
another small preloader swf and asked the list, but received no answer -
sorry.

I tried overriding global styles in the preloader swf, but had no
joy with this method.

Anyone found a solution to this???

However
 if I load that same SWF via another swf into a symbol

seem
 as though using setStyle allows me to keep the boarder from showing under

Re: [Flashcoders] weird htmlText split and join behavior

2006-11-28 Thread l u c h y x

First do a Trace of (my_text1.htmlText) and see what happens with the HTML
content.
Usually you can do this
my_text1.htmlText = my_text1.htmlText.split( tag2replace ).join( my_replace
);

But the string tag to replace string2replace:String =
brbr*tag_to_replace /*brbr;
After you put on the htmlText area become in brbr**brbr;
Flash ignore the unsupported html tags.!
So I suggest you do something like  var string2replate = %_replaceme_%;
And then use
my_text1.htmlText = my_text1.htmlText.split(string2replate).join( my_replace
);

Best..

All of the class templates are stored in the flash configuration folder for
each version of flash. In windows, the config folder is
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Macromedia\flash version\en\Configuration\

The class files are located in the gskinner\templates\classes\ directory

You can also specify a template file to use in the panel preferences. There
are details in the bundled documentation on setting up custom templates.

No, it's just a couple of command-line statements. I'm not complaining

Re: [Flashcoders] [OT] SCM/Project management tool

2006-11-28 Thread Ian Thomas

Hi Marcelo,
 SVN handles binary data in the same way as most versioning systems
i.e. not very well. (although better than CVS).

 The trouble is that SVN has no built-in knowledge of what a binary
file (such as a fla) _is_, or how to compare it to previous versions;
it only knows that the file has changed, but doesn't know what has
changed (to do so would mean including a complete .fla parser in the
SVN code).

 On the flip side, we've had no problems with SVN and .fla files - we
just use it to store them as we would any other binary asset. As long
as your project files are organised sensibly and you store the bulk of
your code as external .as files, you should be fine.

 As an aside, later versions of TortoiseSVN (which we use for keeping
things in sync on our local machines) have diff views for some types
of images, which is neat.

 The trac interface will give you previews of .jpg files and the
like, but won't do so for .flas or .swfs.

 It sounds like we're doing similar sorts of projects to you, tho',
with some flas being used for layouts and assets, and we've coped fine
using trac without having to do any special workarounds for binaries.

 HTH,
   Ian

Hi Marcelo,
  SVN handles binary data in the same way as most versioning systems
i.e. not very well. (although better than CVS).

  The trouble is that SVN has no built-in knowledge of what a binary
file (such as a fla) _is_, or how to compare it to previous versions;
it only knows that the file has changed, but doesn't know what has
changed (to do so would mean including a complete .fla parser in the

Ian

Hi Marcelo,
 To be perfectly honest, I have no idea. :-) Sorry!

 However, at the worst, trac uses web-based forms. There's nothing to
stop you writing a custom front end for your client that then posts

 I'd suggest you just download it and have a play with the options;
it's a very straightforward install.

RE: [Flashcoders] Scroll bar math question

2006-11-28 Thread Steven Sacks | BLITZ
Sometimes, people make scrollbars more complicated than they need to be. The
easiest scrollbar to write and use is one that returns a percentage 0-100 based
on its position in the well.

Here is a quick example. I used onEnterFrame for the update because in my
experience, it's smoother than a short interval. YMMV.

private function startScroll():Void
 {
  BTN_Shuttle.startDrag(false, BTN_Shuttle._x, BTN_Well._y, BTN_Shuttle._x,
BTN_Well._y + BTN_Well._height - BTN_Shuttle._height);
  this.onEnterFrame = function() {
   this.updateScroll();
  };
 }

private function stopScroll():Void
 {
  delete this.onEnterFrame;
  stopDrag();
 }

public function updateScroll():Void
 {
   var perc:Number = (BTN_Shuttle._y - BTN_Well._y) / (BTN_Well._height -
BTN_Shuttle._height);
   dispatchEvent({type:change, data:perc});
 }

/

How it works:

It determines the shuttle (slider) position in relation to its total range of
motion along its path (the well). This is achieved with the following simple
equation:

current position / maximum position

This returns a percentage between 0 and 1.

So, you pass that percentage to your clip and adjust its _y accordingly.

private function onScroll(evt:Object):Void
 {
  var newY:Number = -MC_Holder._height * evt.data;
  MC_Holder._y = newY;
 }

Easy peasy.

RE: [Flashcoders] actionscript in FLV?

2006-11-28 Thread Merrill, Jason
How would it execute - it would be playing inside the Flash player
called from a .swf anyway right? So I would say no to having AS inside
the .flv - as flv is not a .swf. But read up on .flv and cuepoints in
the help docs. Curious why? Isn't the .flv going to be played in a
.swf anyway? You can then use .flv cuepoints to trigger events.

My feeling is that the Flash IDE will gradually forsake its name in
favour of a the more generic use of the term (i'm thinking 'Hoover',
'hoover' here) so i'm happy to stick with Flash, and make a worthy point
that the project is built with Actionscript as that tends to be where
the majority of my work is concentrated. I suspect many developers
wouldn't mind if the Flash IDE had a name change now that Flex is
perhaps becoming more the tool-of-choice, as that would probably clear
things up lexically for me (or is this REUTWW - Rubbing Everyone Up The

[Flashcoders] Breaking appart a class

2006-11-28 Thread Helmut Granda

I have a game class that is about 215 lines of code. Is not really big but i
would like to divide this class in smaller packages so I can re-use bits of
pieces of code for new versions of the game.

The question is what are the best practices to break this code into smaller
bits and pieces? As always we dont like to help without seeing what the
person is doing already.

So here it is my idea

MainClass
-com
--utils
---func1
---func2
---func3

But some of the functions talk directly to the main class so what is the
best approach to use those extra functions? Should I pass all the strings or
arrays that in need and let the functions spit back the information I need?

Help welcome... maybe a book or 2 :)

Re: [Flashcoders] Breaking appart a class

2006-11-28 Thread Jason King

Ah a general OOP question that even a flash-noob like me can answer.
Don't just separate functions, decompose the game and the objects should
fall out.
Let's use an online chess game as an example.

Chess has players, moves, pieces and a board.
I'd probably build a Player.as, Move.as, Piece.as and Board.as
I might create descendants of Piece (e.g. King, Queen, Rook etc).
As you look at each function in the game put that in the class file that
it has the most to do with.
Drawing the board goes in Board.as. The board probably knows where the
pieces are and calls Piece to draw each piece on an occupied square.
Testing for check belongs in Move.as since its not legal to put your own
king in check by your move. The checktest should be public as you'll
want to re-use it.
Testing for checkmate probably belongs in Player as at the start of each
player's turn you should test to see if s/he has lost the game. That
will probably involve multiple calls to checktest to see if their king
can move to a square where he's not in check.

The game starts by creating 2 players and a board.
while neither player is checkmated it processes one player's turn then
the other's.

smaller

bits and pieces? As always we dont like to help without seeing what the
person is doing already.

So here it is my idea

MainClass
-com
--utils
---func1
---func2
---func3

But some of the functions talk directly to the main class so what is the
best approach to use those extra functions? Should I pass all the
strings or
arrays that in need and let the functions spit back the information I
need?

Help welcome... maybe a book or 2 :)

If you're looking for bug/feature tracking for your clients, check out
Mantis. It's easy to set up, customize (if you know php), and best of
all, it's free.

2006-11-28 Thread Marcelo de Moraes Serpa

Hi Steven,

Mantis seems to be a good alternative to Trac. It seems to have all the
features trac has plus a bunch more and still is simple and effective. I'm
having problems installing mod_pythin on my cpanel enabled server so I'm
considering other tool to use, and Mantis is certainly attractive :)

Marcelo.

Re: [Flashcoders] can make the flv play to reverse?

2006-11-28 Thread hbbalfred

ok,thank you for you reply :)

From: T. Michael Keesey [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [Flashcoders] can make the flv play to reverse?

It's because of how FLVs are encoded. It's far quicker to decompress
it forward than backward. There's really not much you can do, aside
from making a backward FLV (thus doubling download time).

(BTW, you should set onEnterFrame to null once it reaches frame 1.
Telling it to stop() does nothing, as, technically, it's already
stopped.)

[Flashcoders] Old Flash Problem - Clips stop receiving clicks

2006-11-28 Thread Steven Sacks | BLITZ
Hey everyone,

There's an old problem with Flash that pops up every so often and I've
never been able to determine what causes it or how to solve it.
Sometimes certain clips/buttons stop receiving clicks unless you move
the mouse between clicks. Does anyone know how or why this happens and
how to get around it (hopefully not involving hitTest)?

Thanks,
Steven

Haha! I solved it sort of kind of. If I go to a different application
and come back no more problem.

Looks like general Flash wonkiness and who knows why. Still interested
if somebody knows.

I have seen this happen when you use dynamic text on the button
rather than static text.
