This always sent me to the colliflowers. Important things should work
as intended. It is not our role to do main bugs feedback (as this one
is). Is Adobe paying people for finding such obvious bugs ?

Francis,

With all due respect, the Flash team knows about this, and they
don't need any more concrete test cases. We've got better things
to do than play into Adobe's attempt to buy time by deflecting it
back on the developers to come up with examples while the Flash
team tries to get out of their blunder.

It's clear that Grant had discussions with Adobe before he wrote
that blog post and I'm certain that others have approached the
Flash player team with this issue for awhile. Nothing has been
done to fix it, so you end up with a public exposure of the issue,
as Grant has done. The Flash player team has egg on its face
because in AS2 if you unload a swf, it unloads, and in AS3, it
doesn't. Period end of statement. The Flash GC engine's inner
workings is something that nobody outside of Adobe has access into
and we can't possibly make tests that demonstrate whether it is or
isn't working. The proof is in the pudding and Grant's post is all
the evidence you need.

Let's not get into a situation where we are insulting each other's
intelligence by acting like the Flash team hasn't been aware of
this issue for quite some time. The Flash team is well aware of
it, they know why it exists and they know it's difficult to fix.
In all likelihood, they knew about it before any developer
discovered it. I mean, after all, it works exactly like it was
coded to work. It's not technically a bug, it's an engineering
decision that is coming back to haunt them.

Re: [Flashcoders] Is Adobe fixing this big FP9 problem?

2008-04-15 Thread Cedric Muller

The fact is: unloading a SWF (or sound) does not UNLOAD its content
The fact: this is not fair, this is not professionnal, even Flash 5
people wouldn't admit such.
Having to build extra methods to remove (trying to do it with a clean
twist) everything has never been a problem for me (I am a CPU waster
when it comes to unregistering things). As of now, I can unload
content, but I have to implement special methods .. like DIE
();   ... and I addEventListeners and I removeEventListeners to
the loaded content, shameful.

But I doubt Adobe missed this big problem. I *feel* this was let in
the wild, as no one ever loads + unloads content with Flash :D (I am
so serious here, besides PV3D, the rest is pure crap)
Everyone is doing calculators (financial, mortgage, mathematical,
poetical, cartoonesque, ...) with Air ,and poor weak datagrids with
Flex :D this is sad, this is sadso the guys that drive (or drove)
Flash higher can now buy some LEGO kit and do better things... again:
sad (and irrealistic, but I hope you get the point)

It seems we are back (actually, ... we never left) to when FLASH IDE
would crash when querying a PHP page (or any other script), or when
content was double loaded in the IDE.
Had discussions with Macromedia back then, they were like 'huh ?
what ? please give us examples'...
then there was dozen of people reporting the same bug, and now we
know this bug has been around since FLASH MX AND NEVER SOLVED SINCE
THEN. So ? Has Adobe received ANY examples ? Has Adobe never achieved
to reproduce this horrible bug ?

I feel like Alice, stranded on a planet of cards...
Is COLDFUSION impacted ? nope :P follow my logic ?
so, what's the deal with unloading SWFs ? :P
Is Adobe preparing the way for its topnotch new method to load/unload
content , will it be another NEW extra cool flavor of the Flash
Platform? I guess this will be called 'AENIMA - Backdoor way'

Is Adobe such a Microsoft ???

I am fearful, frigthened by the dark

As a sidenote. The GC is not public. You should never call a method

fails (fatally: crashes on the way).

 Okay, but in the simple example, you are using it for both:

 Okay, but formatter should not be treated as a property of _selectedBox.
 _selectedBox has no property named formatter.

 This is the offending line:

 if (_selectedBox.formatter.italic == false)

 You already have set formatter to the value of
_selectedBox.getTextFormat();
 Thus your conditional should read:

 if (formatter.italic == false)

 To simplify it to keeping formatter separate from the current format,
let's
 rewrite:

 var currentFormat:TextFormat = _selectedBox.getTextFormat();
 var formatter:TextFormat = new TextFormat();

   if (currentFormat.italic == false)
   {
formatter.italic = true;

[Flashcoders] Re: Is Adobe fixing this big FP9 problem?

2008-04-15 Thread dave matthews

here's a concrete example of,

  ' the loaded content problem '

  I received a U.S.patent on this Flash 4 based 'invention', it's an interface
navigation tool system:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=enq=patent+matthews+data+objects+6943811+btnG=Search

  The complete Flash 4 code is published in the docs, but a working example has
been on the net since the patent was granted: http://2goto.com/

  Top buttons+scroll bars trigger to visible on roll over (zoom bar =
window/left).

  It actually runs on the earliest FlashLite player. The 'zoomer' is
completely object oriented. Any internal window can 'loadMovie' any .swf on
the net/local that is not relying on a root.call to function.

 I've had it still operating with 50 independent feeds.swf from 30 different
host URL's. The patent explains how the 3k zoomer.swf invention is designed
to display a huge number of dataObjects.swf or other data like .jpg's and HTML
pages for example.

  When the cursor is outside of a window, we switch off = unload the content
(load a blank.swf into the parent), and reload it when the cursor returns.
This allows the interface to appear to hold vast quantities of information and
interactive animations, tools.swf, etc.

  I rebuilt the zoomer code in AS3, it works fine. The newest player's domain
permissions may make loading independent Flash.swf's more complex than loading
text.txt docs and .jpg's - we'll see.

  Now, with AIR the browser can be a child object in an .swf - Flash wraps
around the billions of HTML based web pages - even those containing content.swf
! We could be developing a fly through universe of videos, interactive video
phones, live camera feeds, the whole GoogleEarth tile map system, galleries
seas of HTML.pages etc. Inside Flash!

  ...Except, there is no way for us to unload any of that independently hosted
work.swf from the Flash based zoomer interface - even when we unload/replace
the parent 'internalWindow.swf' containing the other guys.swf.

bummer,

Dave Matthews
http://www.2GoTo.com

p.s. The zoomer could not be invented without Flash, because bitmaps can't
scale like vector graphics. The bandwidth/hardware differences between what
Flash's vector engines have been able to do for years compared to Micro$oft's
WPF/sliverlite are substantial! Flash is exponentially more effecient.

  thanks folks, good thread...  :)

Dave

Indeed.

My understanding is that only SWFs loaded from the same domain are
affected - those loaded from an external domain or a subdomain are
protected by an implicit sandbox. So while they can't be unloaded,
they are at least unaffected by the player bug and will be cleaned up
by the garbage collector.

Stuart,

I'm not sure I've followed this thread thoroughly, but have you embedded a
font and specified it in a text format you're using?

That is, you can't just say embedFonts = true. To do that, you must embed a
font in the Library, and use that font in the field's text format,
controlling the field and format with AS.

Are you using AS3 or AS2?

also, have you put text in p_1 already? Because the order that Flash wants

apart from the _root reference whichis never a good idea

check you lower-case / upper-case naming on your textfield

in your loop your only mapping references to p_1, p_2, p_3 ... etc etc

and fields named P_1, P_2, P_3 ... etc will never be referenced

Re: [Flashcoders] [AS2] Warning: broadcastMessage is not a function

2008-04-15 Thread Jason Van Pelt
In AS2 you could use broadcastMessage similar to the way you use
dispatchEvent in AS3, but you have to import the classes, set up the
listeners, and I think alter the prototype of the class broadcasting the
message.

In sepy I had a snippet set up for adding broadcasting to a class. Here are
its contents, you can check your file to see if it is following a similar
construct:

// at top
import mx.transitions.BroadcasterMX;
import mx.transitions.OnEnterFrameBeacon;

  // in vars
  static var __initBroadcaster = BroadcasterMX.initialize
(ClassName.prototype, true);
  public var addListener:Function;
  public var removeListener:Function;
  public var broadcastMessage:Function;
  private var _listeners:Array;

  /*
  * remember to add vars for any call back functions ie:
  *
  * public var onComplete:Function;
  *
  */

// in constructor
this._listeners = [];
this.addListener(this);

  // broadcastMessage(onComplete,args);

Bear in mind that you can add other classes, etc as listeners. The use
outlined above would allow you to do something like:

var bla = new ClassName();
bla.onComplete = function(){
  // trace(onComplete);
}

Re: [Flashcoders] Is Adobe fixing this big FP9 problem?

2008-04-15 Thread Paul Andrews
I find it rather bizarre that people feel that it's necessary to beat a drum
about this. I doubt that Adobe are sitting back on the issues raised.

The thread has the Air of an hysterical mob. It's amazing how so many people
have produced fantastic systems using Actionscript 3 in spite of the gloom
and doom spouted here.

From what I've read, the FP9 garbage collection is pretty much standard
technology for object based systems - you can't just discard objects that
have references to them. The real problem seems to be related to the other
infrastructure that creates multiple object references that aren't always
removable. I'm not saying bthere isn't a problem, just that it's not worthy
of the histeria being generated. I understand completely it can be a serious
issue for some people.

Anyway, I'll express some faith that Adobe will resolve the issues - I won't
be rolling back to AS2 despite the expert advice of some. I'll consign a lot
of this thread to the same place as the 'end of the world is nigh' material
that those people with placards dispense.

No need to hand me a flaming torch just yet..

[Flashcoders] Flash developers Berlin - are there any?

2008-04-15 Thread Jiri Heitlager
A bit of topic but here goes anyway. I currently moved from Amsterdam to
Berlin and I was wondering if there are any Adobe flash groups or flash
related gatherings in Berlin. If anybody knows about some place
(on/offline) here in Berlin where I can meet some Flash developers I
would be really happy to know

Thnx

[Flashcoders] odd MacTel + Windows + Flash bug

2008-04-15 Thread Andrew Sinning
We're seeing a strange behavior with Firefox running under Windows on a
MacTel. We're seeing it under both Parallels and VMWare.

We're running WinXP with the latest FF (2.0.0.13) and the latest Flash
(9.0.0.124). I'm running the latest Parallels under Leopard and my
colleague is running VMWare under Tiger.

FF under plain Windows (no MacTel) works just fine.

The bug is that images loaded in using the Loader object and sounds
loaded in using loadSound(url, true) do not show up / start playing
_until_ the user moves their mouse! Curiously, xml-loading seems to
work just fine. Animations, tweening, intervals and everything else
seems to work perfectly fine.

You click on a button to go to the next phase of the interaction and
everything seems to work fine, but you won't hear any sounds or see any
images loaded until you move the mouse. The ProgressBar for the Loader
will show 100%.

Anyone ever seen this?

I have generally been quite permissive about this sort of thing. However, I
would be willing to change this position based on my perception of the
general consensus of the list members (if I can gauge that).

I would prefer not to discuss that topic on-list, though, since it'll
generate more OT posts than the job posts themselves. If you'd like to
express your opinion one way or the other, feel free to contact me directly.

Re: [Flashcoders] detecting pdf writer

2008-04-15 Thread Glen Pike

Hi,

   I don't think you can detect the kind of printer a person has - you
usually just have to send a job to the printer and the OS deals with this.

   If you had AS3 you could use AlivePDF -
http://www.lynchconsulting.com.au/blog/index.cfm/2008/3/27/PDF-Generation-in-Actionscript--AlivePDF

   Not much help if you have AS2 though. You may be able to work
around this - generate a PDF server side and then use the File Reference
to download it.

   You may be able to look at ways of posting image data to the
server - there are lots of examples - if you are generating your PDF
image in Flash. If it's text, this may be even easier - smaller uploads.

Here's what I'm really looking for:

}

Is that possible somehow?

[Flashcoders] How to change textformat for List rollover?

2008-04-15 Thread Derek Vadneau
I haven't had a need to use the CS3 components in an actual project until
now.

After hunting the docs it seems I can only change something like the
highlight colour for all components by editing the graphics for each
component type. Ugh.

Anyhow, I'm now trying to change the colour of the text for a list
component so there's a different colour for up/over/down/disabled. The up
and disabled appear in the docs as textFormat and disabledTextFormat, but
there's no mention of changing the textformat for the over or down
conditions.

Is there a way? ... without having to create a custom cellrenderer ...

[Flashcoders] CJK runtime font embedding

2008-04-15 Thread kris range
I'm looking for some advice on what others have done for AS3 runtime
font embedding, specifically in relation to Chinese/Japanese/Korean
languages. Embedding these character sets seems to be a heavy load but
the other option of device fonts doesn't seem to exciting either. :)

Thanks,
