[flexcoders] Tamarin, Adobe open source the Flash player ?

2006-11-07 Thread Tom Chiverton
(http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/200611/110706Mozilla.html)

I can't work out if this is effectively open souring the Flash Player (as Sun
is doing with Java) or not.

It seems they've opened up the bits that take Flash bytecode (a .swf) and turn
it into native code inside a plugin.
I think ( Mozilla FAQ: Source code [for] ActionScript Virtual Machine
(AVM2) ... in Adobe Flash Player 9, including the Just In Time (JIT) runtime
compiler ).

The Mozilla FAQ isn't the clearest thing I've read this morning, but I've only
had one tea, so does anyone else want to try ?

[flexcoders] Eclipse becoming HORRIBLY slow??

2006-11-07 Thread Steve Kellogg @ Project SOC

Hello,

Im using FB2 on WinXP on a fairly modern laptop (core
duo).

I seem to be having a great deal of trouble lately with
FlexBuilders TEXT EDITOR (in SOURCE MODE) getting VERY VERY SLOW. Slow
means that I can type a 32 character line, and see a 10-15 second delay before
all of the characters show up on the screen.

Is there some sort of GARBAGE COLLECTION that might be
getting in the way of smooth operation? Are there any known conditions that I
should be avoiding?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

new XMLList(s);

it works as it should. But when I try to get the same XML from a
database via AMFPHP I get an XML parser error. Both XML files, the one
above and the one from database, are IDENTICAL. Can someone help me out?

RE: [flexcoders] Flex Accessibility - TextInput Component

2006-11-07 Thread Andrew Kirkpatrick

A bunch of questions:

What version of JAWS?

Do you have the JAWS scripts installed? (http://www.adobe.com/macromedia/accessibility/features/flex/jaws.html)

Try hitting ins+f5 - is your info in this
list?

Do you know about forms mode and virtual PC cursor mode in
JAWS? You will get some different information out of the controls in each
mode. To enter forms mode, navigate to the textinput and hit enter - jaws
will say "Forms mode on".

Background info:
Virtual PC cursor mode is when JAWS navigates through the
off-screen model that it constructs for its own purposes. when in this
mode (this is the mode that users are in when they enter a page) JAWS listens to
the keypresses made by the user, acts on some of them and passes some on to the
browser/player (this is a bit of a simplification). JAWS uses many
keystrokes - "f" is used by JAWS to move the virtual focus to the next form
control, right arrow reads the next character, down arrow reads the next line,
etc. If a user wants to enter text into a control such as a textInput, or
use arrow keys to switch the active tab in a tabnavigator, they need to be in
forms mode.

Forms mode allows user keystrokes to pass through to the
player/browser. Additional navigation of the content (e.g. reading line by
line through non-focusable objects) is not possible, and the user's interaction
model is basically identical to that of a keyboard-only user.

let me know if this helps,
AWK

  Hi, we are building a financial calculator app in
  flex 2 which is required to be accessible.
  So far we have got through most of the pitfalls
  except for one.
  We have a TextInput which due to the visual design
  is not in a FormItem (so no label). So instead we assign a name or description property to the
  accessibilityProperties object. The TextInput may or may not be editable. The question is:
  How do we get Jaws to read the name or description
  properties. Currently it is only reading the value. I know the properties are set because I can see them using
  Microsoft's Inspect32.
  Any help would be much appreciated.

Eric,

The default behavior of the multi-view components such as the
TabNavigator, ViewStack, and Accordion tags is to use deferred
instantiation of the content, so you're already set up to do what you
want out of the box. For more information on the creationPolicy
attribute (which drives this feature), check this page out in the

[flexcoders] delaying creationComplete event

2006-11-07 Thread droopyflex
I build a MXML Component based on Canvas, with a TextArea inside of it.
This TextArea is filled with external HTML file and CSS file (using
URLLoader)
I want my MXML Customized Canvas throw creationComplete Event AFTER
the TextArea is filled.

How can I do that ?

actually, my canvas is displayed too soon (so EMPTY) with a Fade
effect, (using effectStart property) then the text
is displayed after the loading is complete. It could be cool if Fade
effect occur AFTER loading is complete...

this is a major problem with Event oriented framework like Flex. if we
can't delay the fire of an event by the reception of a custom event,
we cannot control the way the GUI is displayed. So, many component
will shown empty !

may be we can use mw.effects.sequence and build a Custom Effect that
is not an effect but a stuff based on URLLoader...
mx:Sequence
mx:Loader .../
mx:Fade ../
/mx:Sequence

any idea ?

[flexcoders] List Bitmap

2006-11-07 Thread kribot
Hi,

I'm a bit rookie to Flex and I'm trying to use a List of mine with
some other function, so I create a class which extends List and add my
function, but now I'm trying to put a Bitmap in some rows of the List

Ex : When I add an object of type String in my list I want the Bitmap
001.gif to be added in the same row, if I add an int I want the Bitmap
002.gif etc.

Has someone got a clue to do that ? just a few lines of algorythm or
explanation to help :)

thanks

Kevin

 To my understanding, creationComplete is dispatched after
 initialization of components. I haven't yet experienced the error
 since I changed:

 creationComplete=initCollections();

 to

 initialize=initCollections()

 But since it's hard to reproduce I can't tell for sure if this is at
 all related to anything happening here...

the bug is not related to this. even the MenuBar is properly filled by
initCollections(), there is something wrong in MenuBar::showMenu()

After many tries, here a way to reproduce it:
- build the menubar post in this Thread. (taken from Menubar doc)
- click on Menu 2
- now the tricky part: move to Menu Item 2-B but immediatly go to
Menu 1 then immediatly go to Menu 2 before Menu Item 2-B open
and before Menu 1 open (may be).
- Menu Item 2-B should open when Menu 2 is closed, or something
like that
- MenuBar::showMenu() should crash on Menu 2

this is not easy to reproduce, may be because the submenu is not big.
BUT: playing with big menu with big submenu for a moment always crash.

Re: [flexcoders] Tamarin, Adobe open source the Flash player ?

2006-11-07 Thread Ian Thomas
Hi Tom,
  Just came across the same thing myself - that's a stunning
contribution, if I'm reading it right.

  It basically looks like Adobe are providing the source of the AVM2
bytecode interpreter/runtime engine to Mozilla so that Mozilla can use
it as the execution engine for their ECMAscript/Javascript engine
(SpiderMonkey).

  Doesn't look like open sourcing the Flash player, I'm afraid tho'. :-)

 It seems they've opened up the bits that take Flash bytecode (a .swf) and turn
 it into native code inside a plugin.
 I think ( Mozilla FAQ: Source code [for] ActionScript Virtual Machine

[flexcoders] Re: Problem with debugging with custom URL string

2006-11-07 Thread Luke Pillow
Hi Nick,

I've ran into a similar problem before...

I'm not sure how where you're accessing the URL variables for
authentication, but if you are doing so from within your flex code,
then I would recommend always decoding your URL variables when you
pick them off. A good little article on how to easily do so can be
found at http://deepthoughts.orsomethinglikethat.com under the entry
titled, Flex 2: How to get URL query-string variables within Flex
application.

This doesn't solve the FlexBuilder problem you are asking about, but
it does allow you to set the Run address to the encoded URL, and the
Debug address to the decoded URL - to be encoded by FlexBuilder upon
launch.

Again, the key is to always ensure that your variables are encoded
going into the application...

Hope this helps,
Luke.

 ?icid=SessionIDgoeshereid=emailGoesHere ) get's encoded so, for
example,
 the @ symbol in the email is %40 . This messes up the authentication
with
 the server so it can't pull the data and the app hangs. If I try to
change
 the URL string manually in the browser, then it can't connect to the
 debugger, because in loading the new page, it disconnects and stops the
 debugger in Flex Builder.

 Anyone have any ideas for how I can get FlexBuilder/Eclipse to NOT
encode
 the URL string?

Re: [flexcoders] AddChild() Exceptions

2006-11-07 Thread Ciarán
It just clicked. One of those realization moments...

I'm guessing any instance of a child can only have one parent. Therefore this

someContainer.addChild(imageVar);
someOtherContainer.addChild(imageVar);

Is not OK, because references to imageVar don't get cleaned up as Flex
draws the screen. If the child were explicitly removed in the middle -
someContainer.removeChild(imageVar) or the like - then this would be
OK.

I had this notion stuck in my head because I wasn't seeing a child as
something that was exclusively owned, and in retrospect it seems daft
not to see it as a two-way thing. Initially I believed every parent
simply kept a reference to children rendered. If only I hadn't brushed
over this line in the docs:

Because a display object has only one parent container, you can add
an instance of a display object to only one display object container.
For example, the following code shows that the display object tf1 can
exist in only one container
(http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/2/docs/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm?href=1853.html)

I'm also guessing an arbitrary decision was made not to implicitly
clean up the references when this happens, in order to inform the
developer that there's something wrong. However, in the same doc:

If you add a display object that is contained in one display object
container to another display object container, it is removed from the
first display object container's child list.

So does anyone know if the behaviour above is intentional? Or is it a bug?

Cheers,
Ciarán

[flexcoders] setting a value to a combobox

2006-11-07 Thread lkeidesign
I am using a combo box on a form when I want the end user to edit a
profile. The combo box is populated using the data provider property
where it loads the contents of an XML file.

Does anyone know how I can set the value of the combo box? I have a
class that stores values such as company, department, etc. The
department combo box has all the options listed and I need it to
intially have selected the current value. I set the text property
but when the form loads the first item in the combo box is selected
rather than my value.

I realize that I could set the selectedIndex property but how would I
know which index is the one for the value I need?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

RE: [flexcoders] x, y, width, and height in CSS

2006-11-07 Thread Brian Deitte

Hmm, and so the obvious problem has now hit me, which is
that UIComponent's measure() method is overriden, which means that overriding
measure() at the UIComponent level doesn't work. It also doesn't make
sense as a place to override x and y. So I'll go back to Peter's
suggestion and hope that someone on the framework team can confirm or deny a
x/y/width/height change in 2.1 here(otherwise I'll start bugging folks
myself). Thanks, Brian

Hi Igor, yeah I did think about that when I read Manish's
article, but I didn't like the idea of altering UIComponent rather using my own,
extended components. It seemed too likely that I could do something wrong,
and I didn't like the idea of updating a piece that everyone on the team has to
remember about when dealing with Flex hotfixes or updates. But given the
benefit that this could provide for the designer, I probably should quit my
worrying. :) And assuming that x/y/width/height are showing up
in CSS in the update, this is a great short-term solution. Thanks,
Brian

  if this is fixed in 2.1, that'd be great to know. As for Manish's

  Flex component that is used to get this to work, not just Canvas.
  Hopefully it is changed in 2.1 or Peter's solution will work.

  J. saidhttp://mannu.livejournal.com/299285.html
  you can override the class and start doing
  this .I had a same situation last week when I was trying to get a
  designer to start doing the CSS code but with the width and height he couldn't

as well as Gordon's flexcoderspost where he says this is by design. I
assume this is by design forperformance reasons, and that the framework
would be slowed down byhaving to look up the values continuously to
check for runtime changes.So how about special-casing these four values

RE: [flexcoders] Tamarin, Adobe open source the Flash player ?

2006-11-07 Thread Brian Deitte
My messages tend to show up very slowly, so this may be answered by the
time it appears, but the AVM2 doesn't need to understand all the
bytecodes (or rather all the tags) of Flash. It only understands the
AVM2 format, which is one tag within the Flash format. It's a really
big tag, of course, but the code won't be able to understand FlashType
tags, etc, by itself- it does this through an interface with the rest of
the Player code.  -Brian

Re: [flexcoders] any way to make VDividedBox remove splitter on child being hidden?

you could also try:child.includeInLayout = false;child.visible = false;this should work with any number of hidden and visible children (if you have 3 children and hide one you will only be able to see divider between the other two).

Is there
any way to make a VDividedBox hide the splitter control when there is only one
child visible? I have a splitter than splits two sections. But the
second section isn't always visible. However, the VDividedBox insists on
always showing the splitter and letting the user drag it around.

I would rather not have to kludge around it by pulling the second child in and
out of the VDB.

[flexcoders] Re: LinearGradient outside charts

2006-11-07 Thread Cristian Pop
Thanks to everybody on the list.

It seems that it was a bit of misunderstanding. I was trying to create
a Canvas component and to be able to fill the background with gradient
but to specify more then 2 colors, like it is possible with let's say
Button component.

So I tried using LinearGradient class from mx.graphics. Like this :

mis:MyCanvas width=200 height=100 borderStyle=solid
borderThickness=10 cornerRadius=10
 mis:fill
   mx:LinearGradient
mx:entries
 mx:GradientEntry color=green ratio=0 alpha=.5/
 mx:GradientEntry color=red ratio=.33 alpha=.5/
 mx:GradientEntry color=blue ratio=.66 alpha=.5/
/mx:entries
   /mx:LinearGradient
  /mis:fill
/mis:MyCanvas

So Ely, I was going for the mx.graphics classes :-)

Dirk, thanks for the great example of doing this using skins, but this
time I wanted to try this approach.

I guess it depends on what needs you have, in my case I can easily
change the Linear Gradient to Radial, in Dirks case it's easier to
skin more then just the canvas.

And finally, my code was just fine but stupid me I was doing
beginFill, endFill and then draw the shape :-)

Thanks again guys,

Cristian Pop

Re: [flexcoders] any way to make VDividedBox remove splitter on child being hidden?

2006-11-07 Thread Pan Troglodytes

I think you meant verticalGap. It's a VDividedBox. But no, that doesn't work. You can see for yourself here: mx:VDividedBox label= width=100% height=100% verticalGap=0
 mx:Panel label=panel1 width=100%/ mx:Panel label=panel2 width=100% visible=false/ /mx:VDividedBox
I remembered that I had actually ran into this problem in the past and eventually created my own class to fix it. Here it is for those interested. It involves creating your own class of divider that knows to shut itself off. It's kind of kludgy, but works for me:
VDividedBoxExt.as:package nes
{ import mx.containers.VDividedBox; import mx.containers.dividedBoxClasses.BoxDivider
; import nes.BoxDividerExt;
 public class VDividedBoxExt extends VDividedBox {
 private var _dividerEnabled:Boolean = true; public function VDividedBoxExt()
 { super();
 dividerClass = nes.BoxDividerExt; }
  public function set dividerEnabled(value:Boolean):void
 { _dividerEnabled = value; invalidateDisplayList();
 } public function get dividerEnabled():Boolean
 { return(_dividerEnabled);
 } }
}BoxDividerExt.as:
package nes{import mx.containers.dividedBoxClasses.BoxDivider;import flash.events.MouseEvent;import mx.containers.DividedBox;import mx.containers.BoxDirection;import mx.containers.DividerState;
import flash.display.DisplayObject;import mx.core.mx_internal;use namespace mx_internal; public class BoxDividerExt extends BoxDivider { private var previousHeight:Number = 0; private var previousWidth:Number = 0;
 private var knob:DisplayObject; public function BoxDividerExt() { } override protected function updateDisplayList(unscaledWidth:Number, unscaledHeight:Number):void
 { if (!parent.parent[dividerEnabled]) { if (knob) { removeChild(knob); knob = null; } graphics.clear(); }
 else { if (isNaN(width) || isNaN(height)) return;  if (!parent) return;  graphics.clear();  graphics.beginFill(0x00, 0);
 graphics.drawRect(0, 0, width, height); graphics.endFill();  var color:Number; var alpha:Number = 1.0;  var thickness:Number = getStyle(dividerThickness);
  var isVertical:Boolean = DividedBox(owner).direction != BoxDirection.HORIZONTAL;  var gap:Number = isVertical ? DividedBox(owner).getStyle(verticalGap) :
 DividedBox(owner).getStyle(horizontalGap); if (state != DividerState.DOWN) { // Draw knob, if there is enough room if (gap = 6)
 { if (!knob) { var knobClass:Class = Class(getStyle(dividerSkin)); if (knobClass) knob = new knobClass(); if (knob)
 addChild(knob); }  if (knob) { if (isVertical) { knob.scaleX = 1.0; knob.rotation
 = 0; } else { // Rotate the knob knob.scaleX = -1.0; knob.rotation = -90; }
knob.x = Math.round((width - knob.width) / 2); knob.y = Math.round((height - knob.height) / 2); } } return; }  color = getStyle(dividerColor);
 alpha = getStyle(dividerAlpha); graphics.beginFill(color, alpha); if (isVertical) { var visibleHeight:Number = thickness; if (visibleHeight gap)
 visibleHeight = gap;  var y:Number = (height - visibleHeight) / 2; graphics.drawRect(0, y, width, visibleHeight); } else { var visibleWidth:Number = thickness;
  if (visibleWidth  gap) visibleWidth = gap;  var x:Number = (width - visibleWidth) / 2; graphics.drawRect(x, 0, visibleWidth, height); }

[flexcoders] Re: Tamarin, Adobe open source the Flash player ?

2006-11-07 Thread jrunrandy
Here is my understanding:

Adobe is not open sourcing the Flash Player. Adobe *is* contributing
source code for the ActionScript Virtual Machine, the scripting
language engine component within Flash Player. ActionScript 3.0 runs
on the Tamarin virtual machine in Flash Player 9.

I'm sure there are others who can clarify this further.

RE: [flexcoders] Tamarin, Adobe open source the Flash player ?

2006-11-07 Thread Brian Deitte
Sort of... a better example may be creating your own Flex component,
AVMPlus. This component depends on player.swc. The player.swc has some
methods (like 'give me a font name') which the AVMPlus component calls.
AVMPlus doesn't, however, need to know how player.swc gets this
information. The player.swc code gets this information by parsing tags,
but again, the AVMPlus doesn't care about this.

As we all know, you don't need to have the source to player.swc in order
to run AVMPlus. Rather the compiler can figure out the dependencies at
compile-time, and at runtime the AVMPlus and player.swc code all work
fine together. There's also a known list of methods that are used by
AVMPlus from player.swc. These methods don't need to come from
player.swc- it's just where they happen to come from now. If you
wanted, you could also provide your own version of player.swc... which
in this case, we'd call mozilla.swc.

Ok, and now I've taken my break from programming. I hope you enjoyed my
coffee-infused metaphor.  :)  -Brian

Re: [flexcoders] Eclipse becoming HORRIBLY slow??

2006-11-07 Thread Anatole Tartakovsky

2000 lines is really not much - we have objects 3 times bigger that are no problem for editing. However, there are quirks in the FlexBuilder that pretty much kill editing - and there is no real system to it. Usually they can be cured by simple code rearrangement.

We had one 2000 file that behaved the same way - it was mxml inherited from another mxml that in turn had #include section. If you paste in include section, the problem disappears.
Basically the problem seems related to in-file code dependencies when it fallsscan of the file- make sure you check the base objects your problem file inherits from .

Hope this helps,
Anatole

[flexcoders] Re: custom Panels original size

2006-11-07 Thread jnewport
Gordan, the code you provided has one small issue, since
originalHeight is set everytime minimize is called it resets the
minimum each time.

Is there a way to set the minimum size on creationComplete or another
function inside the custom panel?

So for instance:

  protected override function createChildren(): void {
 super.createChildren();
 originalHeight = this.height;
trace(originalHeight);
}

I tried the following, but it didn't work. When the trace is called
it returns 0 so I assume this in createChildren isn't refering to
the my custom Panel or is it something else?

This might be another subject, but can you do this parent.this.height?

[flexcoders] Re: custom Panels original size

2006-11-07 Thread jnewport
I tried both your overrides, but they caputer the height property as
0. Maybe they are trying to read the height before the compenent is
created?

Although I would think that childrenCreated() would be one of last
methods called when a panel is created?

Anyone else have anys suggestions? Here is my entire code for the
custom resizeable Panel taken from
http://jeff.mxdj.com/flex_2_maxrestorepanel_class.htm

I have made some enhancements so that the resizing code is in the
class rather than using the restore and minimize events.

The issue is that I am using two of these custom panels per view, one
on top of the other. So if you minimize say the top customPanel1 the
lower customPanel2 expands automatically to take up the space (which
it should do), but if you then try to minimize the bottom customPanel2
(so both are minimized) it will set the bottom customPanel2's
originalHeight to the expanded version (caused when it expanded to
take up the extra space).

That probably confused you..what I am trying to do is capture the
height when the customPanel.as compenent is first created before
anyone can click the minimize button. I tried to capture it in the
constructor function, but it returns 0.

This is the goal.

You have probably tried this but...

There was blog somewhere that said XP holds the memory or something
when not using Flex Builder. Try to minimize and restore Flex Builder

[flexcoders] minor bug at combobox

2006-11-07 Thread Luis Eduardo

  hi,

  if you execute this sample app, you will find strange gaps inside the
dropdwon list of the combobox as you move the scrollbar.
  i really dont know why this but i think that is a bug.

mx:Applicationxmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml;

i said this is minor because the workaround is quite simple. Just trade
the empty Name= at the first row for a space like Name= and all
goes rigth.
well... i know this is simple but i feel on the duty to report ;)

I have a calendar component and an ArrayCollection of data that is

Is there any way that I can visually extend the calendar component to
show markers where dates not selected have this associated data?

[flexcoders] Free LocalDebugger for Flex 2 available

2006-11-07 Thread efeminella
I have developed a simple local debugger for Flex 2 which handles
recursively tracing objects of complex type from an application to a
console window.

The debugger runs in a browser so if you are using firefox you can
easily tab between your application and the debugger.

The debugger is free so if you are interested you can learn more at
http://www.ericfeminella.com/blog/2006/11/06/flex-2-local-debugger-api-v099/

Enjoy,

[flexcoders] where to drop on tree

2006-11-07 Thread Jesús Iglesias

Hi again,

Thanks to you I have found that, on drag and drop
with trees, data comes on treeItems. :)

Now i have one more problem. What I'm trying to do
is a tree where you can move elements from one node to another and dispatch an
event to upgrade database, so I need to know the new node where you drop the
item (dataprovider is xml) and update databse with the ID of this
node.
I alsa need to update the order of this item y the
node, one of the main features of the aplicacion is to order items on a
node.

I don't know where to begin, I do drag and drop
fine and get "treeItems" moved, but I don't know how to get the info I
need.

Thanks again,
Jesus

[flexcoders] Re: Tamarin, Adobe open source the Flash player ?

2006-11-07 Thread ben.clinkinbeard
Once again, Gordon takes the cake for the best clear and concise
explanation of a topic. I have read at least 20 descriptions of this
stuff today and this is the first one that has made complete sense.
(The others ranged from 'almost getting it' to 'no clue what the hell
that means'.) Thanks Gordon!

 This is a major contribution from Adobe to the open-source community,
 but let me try to clarify what it is and what is isn't. The code being
 open-sourced is for the core AS3 language, not for anything specific to
 Flash. The contributed engine is able to execute a program that uses
 core classes of the language like Array, Date, RegExp, and XML. It is
 not be able to execute a program that use Flash-specific classes like
 Sprite, TextField, SharedObject, or URLLoader. In particular it supports
 no Flash graphics.

 Mozilla will use this engine by adding browser-DOM classes such as
 Window, Document, Form, Anchor, etc., which are the domain objects
 that a browser manipulates, in the same way that Flash uses this engine
 by adding classes for its domain objects such as Sprites. Once this is
 done, webapp developers will be able to use AS3/ES4 as a fast,
 type-checked, object-oriented JavaScript if they want to.

 So this has nothing to do with putting Flash into Firefox. Firefox users
 will still require the Flash plugin to run SWFs. But contributing a
 high-performance virtual machine for a type-checked, object-oriented
 language is still a big deal!

It actually doesn't have anything to do with the filename, it's
actually the file size. FileReference can't upload files that are 0KB.
Add some characters to 'new document.txt' and the upload will be fine.

I added a try/catch to notify the user if this happens:

try {
	file.upload( uploadUrl) ;
	} catch (error : Error)
	{
		Alert.show(" '" + file.name + "' cannot be uploaded because
it is an empty" +
				" file. Files cannot be 0 KB in size.", "Upload Error...");

There was blog somewhere that said XP holds the memory or something

RE: [flexcoders] Flex Messaging Gateway

2006-11-07 Thread Seth Hodgson
Hi Tom,

You need to make sure you've configured the Flex Messaging Gateway on the CF
side with the correct IP address of the Flex server. That config file lives at:
CFDir/gateway/config/flex-message-gateway.cfg

The 'host' and 'allowedIPs' settings are only optional when both CF and FDS are
running on the same box.

If you've already updated this file on the CF side, I'd recommend double
checking the IP values you're using and ensure that the boxes can see each
other over the network.

RE: [flexcoders] Placing images next to bars in bar charts?

Coulple more questions:

- in flex, 'bar' charts usually mean horizontal, and
'column' charts mean vertical. Just to be clear, which one are you talking
about?
- it sounds like, if you mean horizontal, you want to
essentially use an image instead (or in addition to) the standard labels that
appear on your veritcal axis. Is that right?

 But since it's hard to reproduce I can't tell for sure if this is at
 all related to anything happening here...

the bug is not related to this. even the MenuBar is properly filled by
initCollections(), there is something wrong in MenuBar::showMenu()

After many tries, here a way to reproduce it:
- build the menubar post in this Thread. (taken from Menubar doc)
- click on Menu 2
- now the tricky part: move to Menu Item 2-B but immediatly go to
Menu 1 then immediatly go to Menu 2 before Menu
Item 2-B open
and before Menu 1 open (may be).
- Menu Item 2-B should open when Menu 2 is closed, or
something
like that
- MenuBar::showMenu() should crash on Menu 2

this is not easy to reproduce, may be because the submenu is not big.
BUT: playing with big menu with big submenu for a moment always crash.

[flexcoders] Content layout suggestions?

2006-11-07 Thread Troy Rollins
For my first Flex project, I'm developing a Flex version of an AS2
project I've done. The client is looking to do an update, and this
seems like a good time to move it to Flex. It has been easy to layout
the interface and wire it up (of course), but I'm not clear on how
best to use the Flex metaphor for the content layout, and am seeking
suggestions, links, or whatever.

Basically, it is training content, and takes the form of a bunch of
interactive slide pages, with some ancillary functionality already
provided by the rest of the interface.

So, what I'm wondering is how to manage and layout the actual content.
Something like a customized ViewStack for each chapter? Some of it
will be linked SWF files, but not all of it, and I'd like to keep
things as easy to work with as possible, since there will be a fair
amount of content. I would think that a single enormous application
file is not a good way to encapsulate things. In Flash, most of these
same things were handled with symbols in the library, and the symbols
were swapped in and out programatically. I'd like to come up with
something which works similarly, or better understand how to make
projects like this in a Flex workflow.

TIA.

blushingThanks!/blushing

Now that ya'll understand what Adobe is doing, what are
your reactions?

Once again, Gordon takes the cake for the best clear and
conciseexplanation of a topic. I have read at least 20 descriptions of
thisstuff today and this is the first one that has made complete
sense.(The others ranged from 'almost getting it' to 'no clue what the
hellthat means'.) Thanks Gordon!Ben--- In [EMAIL PROTECTED]ups.com,
"Gordon Smith" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is a major
contribution from Adobe to the open-source community, but let me try to
clarify what it is and what is isn't. The code being open-sourced is for
the core AS3 language, not for anything specific to Flash. The
contributed engine is able to execute a program that uses core classes
of the language like Array, Date, RegExp, and XML. It is not be able to
execute a program that use Flash-specific classes like Sprite,
TextField, SharedObject, or URLLoader. In particular it supports no
Flash graphics. Mozilla will use this engine by adding
browser-DOM classes such as Window, Document, Form, Anchor, etc., which
are the "domain objects" that a browser manipulates, in the same way
that Flash uses this engine by adding classes for its domain objects
such as Sprites. Once this is done, webapp developers will be able to
use AS3/ES4 as a fast, type-checked, object-oriented "_javascript_" if
they want to. So this has nothing to do with putting Flash into
Firefox. Firefox users will still require the Flash plugin to run SWFs.
But contributing a high-performance virtual machine for a type-checked,
object-oriented language is still a big deal! -

   Here is my understanding: Adobe is
not open sourcing the Flash Player. Adobe *is* contributing source code
for the ActionScript Virtual Machine, the scripting language engine
component within Flash Player. ActionScript 3.0 runs on the Tamarin
virtual machine in Flash Player 9. I'm sure there are others
who can clarify this further. Randy Nielsen Flex

[flexcoders] DataGrid Scroll Size

2006-11-07 Thread t8.chad
I have a DataGrid that is 400 px in height but many of the rows in the
DataGrid are taller than 400 px. When viewing a tall row, I scroll
the DataGrid down to see the rest of the row but it skips to the next
row instead of scrolling through it. Is there a way to make the
DataGrid scroll according to the height of the DataGrid rather than
the height of its rows?
