There are still known bugs with not saving your choices in the antenna form
as confirmed by myself and Tim ... so not necessarily corrupt !

Whenever PowerSDR starts doing odd things with saved data it ALWAYS suggests
that the database has become corrupted. The answer is to revert to factory
default and re-enter the settings to see if this fixes the problem.

[Flexradio] Flex-5000A TX1, TX2, TX3

2011-09-06 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Tim . can you please confirm if this is correct???

Looking for some further explanation of TX1, TX2, TX3. The manual could
still use a little help or a good example.

I want to use TX1 and TX2 as a sequencer. I want TX1 to control
transmit/receive relays, TX2 to control 8877 amp.

I think:

TX1 delay 250

TX2 delay 150

Will cause:

TX1 to switch 250ms before the Flex actually transmits

TX2 to switch 150ms before the Flex actually transmits

Resulting in:

T/R relay to switch, followed by amp to key 100mS later, followed by Flex to
transmit another 150mS later.

Is this correct (or backwards)?

After I change from SSB to CWU I don't get sound from the speakers if the

This is the kind of stuff I was referring to in my reply post a few days ago

For Phone, I use:

Sampling rate: 192K (or largest allowed by the radio)
Audio buffer: 1024
DSP RX buffer: largest one available for the sharpest filters
DSP TX buffer: 1024 to give the TX filter a soft skirt.

CW you want low latency but sharp filters, so

Sampling rate: 192K or 96K
Audio buffer: smallest the PC will allow, like 512 or 256
DSP RX buffer: largest one available for the sharpest filters
DSP TX buffer: Isn't applicable when running CW.

Tim,

Now you have stepped in it.

I realize that the setup values you mentioned are very dependent on the
"other two-thirds of the radio", these are good starting places for new guys
(especially w/o the wicki). How about a rough set of numbers for SSB and CW
to use with this set for Digital.

Another question is on the setup box giving the chance to select the radio,
I selected only the 5000. I can not run in demo mode now. Could I have
also selected demo and have that mode along with the 5000? That would be
good practice for the next CW contest, record a half hour of the contest and
play back and practice with just the laptop.

Thanks for all the hard work.

Re: [Flexradio] DIGL/DIGU Settings in 2.0.19 RC1

2011-02-22 Thread Kevin Hobbs
I agree Ted ... I have been at this for years, not months, and I don't have
much more of a clue than you!

Things like:
1) If I choose different sampling rates / buffer sizes ... what does that
really get me?
2) I have tried Heils with HC-4, HC-5, HC-6 ... no ever says "you sound
great" like they used to tell me with my Yaesu ... I can't imagine how it
isn't possible for the Flex to achieve the best Audio based on all the
possible adjustments.
3) Noise reduction ... sure wish I new what changing the taps was really
doing so I would have some clue about truly optimizing.

When you go through the KB or Manuals ... much info is there ... but
typically I find it can also be confusing because it was created from
versions past ... so what you try to follow isn't exactly the same (similar)
as it was created from previous guidance.

This is not a complaint ... just letting you know that you aren't alone.
Some "theory of operation" of the subroutines would be greatly helpful in
achieving the best setup. Software developers are notorious for building
"job security" into everything they do by never documenting anything! Not
usually a big deal unless a key person gets bored and moves on, leaving
others to try to decode their legacy.

This shortcoming isn't isolated to flex alone ... its everywhere that ground
breaking software is being written and applied. I also do astrophotography,
and similarly there are multitudes of excellent image processing software
available ... typically only the guy that wrote it has a clue what is really
going on ... but the rest of us use it at a fraction of its potential as we
can never really be certain of the ideal configuration.

It would be almost impossible for the documentation to be complete and on
par with software.

I realize the SDR is a moving work in progress and that maybe next week or
next month we will have a "new radio," but here is my problem...

I have owned the 3000 for only a short 2 months. I became so intrigued, I
have tried all of the SDR versions and I printed the SDR 1.18 manual and I
have studied the Knowledge Base and it ALL was fun and still is. But folks
there are so many buttons, sliders and settings that have little explanation
of what they really set, change, or why. Unless you make notes when you see
either an adverse or positive change, you might not get back. As someone
said there is no undo button. If you ever saw the movie, "The Matrix", that
is where I feel I am at times.

As an idea for the KB or the documentation, add a glossary or a dictionary
of the tech stuff. I am 75 and my mind is sharp and I love this, so keep me
fed !!

Please explain this "new radio every week" feature?
Was it only 1 week since the last release? Will there be another release

Ernest,

I can sympathize with you, but the most difficult part of any software
project is the documentation. The only way to get accurate documentation is
for the software to be stable (no changes) & the manual writer to have the
time to use the software, learn all of its nuances, & write the manual. In
the case of PowerSDR, the software is a moving target. Even with a person
solely dedicated, full-time to writing the manual the final product would
never be forthcoming, & whatever was released would be outdated the minute
it hit the street. Multiply this problem by 3 since there are 3 radios
(make that 4 if you include the SDR-1000), each with its own variations in
how PowerSDR works.

In defense of no documentation on the new DIGL/DIGU filter behavior, this is
code that was developed last week by Tim, W4TME, & rolled into v2.0.19RC1.
Literally, there has been absolutely no time to develop any documentation.

The marvels of SDR:

>From a user's viewpoint, the good thing is that we get a new radio every
week.

>From a documentation viewpoint, the bad thing is that we get a new radio
every week.

[Flexradio] Flex-5000 VU Antenna

2011-02-21 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi

On the "Antenna" selection page, expert, I find it kind of non-intuitive for
VU.

1) Why is there a choice for 2m and VU 2m . what is the difference?

2) On VU2m . why doesn't Antenna Receiver 1 and Transmit say 2m . only
choices like ANT 1 or 2 or 3 are available . which I don't think it uses?

3) On VU70cm . why doesn't Antenna Receiver 1 and Transmit say 70cm .
only choices like ANT 1 or 2 or 3 are available . which I don't think it
uses?

Am I missing something?

Yes ... there might be database schema changes ... but I just don't think it
is too much to ask to suck the simple parameters like "equalizer",
"antenna", etc out and then put them back where they belong ... would go
along way to making this more user friendly.

There are database schema changes and/or default parameter settings that
change between releases. User data is not kept completely separate from
radio data in the database, so a new DB is created to ensure the database
integrity is maintained.

You do have the ability to use the K9DUR Data Import program to facilitate
migrating setting from an older database

Dear FlexRadio customers:

FlexRadio is pleased to announce the availability of PowerSDR v2.0.19
Release Candidate 1 (RC1) for public download from our website. This
version incorporates a totally new CW keying architecture that was written
from the ground up to achieve minimum jitter and latency using both internal
and external keyers. To say this is a rewrite is a bit of an
understatement. We got out Farnsworth and started from "dit." Everything
is right now in "PARIS."

We have also done significant work since the v2.0.16 beta release to improve
installation and overall out of box experience on all radios. We have
optimized the USB driver for the FLEX-1500 to perform well on a wide range
of PC platforms. We have also incorporated a new FireWire driver with less
CPU overhead on Windows 7 systems. The number of little and not so little
bug fixes are too numerous to mention here. Check out the change log and
release notes. A note about release notes, PLEASE READ the them to get the
most from your FlexRadio.

The URL for the installer software is:

We are very excited about v2.0.19 RC1 as we enter the final steps toward the
PowerSDR v2.0.x Official Release. We thank you for your patience and
support while we have been preparing this important release. We request you
report any bugs found in this release to the bug tracker at

in the Software Product Version field as we will be focusing our attention
on those specific reports.

We would like to say a special thanks to our beta team for their tireless
support in testing a number of interim releases to get here.

We are taking the weekend off but 2.1 starts on Monday. In the software

I have owned an SDR-5000 for about 3 years now that has worked flawlessly
(except for the blue power switch that sticks on occasion). This is just a
question of curiosity. The other day I checked the power output on CW with a
fairly accurate wattmeter. It closely agrees with the meter on PowerSDR
which reads 122 watts. Is this in the range that others see? Not bad for a
100 watt radio. All transmit calibration is as it left the factory.

I get those too ... good news is that they usually only occur on frequencies

I thought it was discussed previously that this likely a by-product of the

To all:

I am several miles from anything close to industrial. Neighborhood noise
generators like appliances would not be on for hours.

I tuned around with my 1500 now to see what I could find. At the upper end
of 20 M I am finding a similar pattern, but this time its much broader (on
the order of 20 KHz) and much less amplitude. Again, the panadapter is
really needed to find it. The hill is very smoothly shaped.

I somewhat consistent feature is an audible u-ahh cycle about a
second long each half (really hard to describe in words). On the panadapter
this audible difference is a slight shift in frequency back and forth.
Usually there is an overall movement up or down in frequency, that with time
can reverse itself.

At one point my son had a bit of interest in radio astronomy and I did a bit
of reading on listening to Jupiter's moons or something like that. There
were some suggested HF frequencies to listen to (mostly picked because of
little earth use of them).

I wonder if what I am seeing perhaps in part could be space noise?

Its been interesting reading all the comments, thanks to all who have
contributed. I'm glad others have seen similar things.

Variable-frequency motor drives can look like that too. Any industrial

Laundries, food processors etc. In the neighborhood?

Of course the neighbor's front-loading washing machine could just as

Easily have a noisy VFD, (my Sears Kenmore Elite does, unfortunately)

But the regular hours of operation would indicate something else.

Re: [Flexradio] AGC pumping?

2010-07-11 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi Mark

I believe this problem is well known as it was discussed with Bob at the
Flex Dinner in Dayton ... I am pretty sure that I logged it as a feature
request / bug some time ago (along with others). I want / need the noise
blanker (they do work great) on 6 meters to get rid of noise garbage, but as
soon as the band opens I know it, as any CW beacon down in the sub-band
(50.060-080) will pump my noise floor wildly all the way up on 50.125 or
wherever. The only choice is to then turn off the blankers and live with the
higher noise floor which often covers up the weak signals that I was hoping
to work (multi-hop EU or other). I believe the solution is for Flex to
analyze a narrow (dead section) of the band or just out of band and base
noise blanker operation on that signal, not the average of everything found
in a 96KHz swathe (or whatever is currently done). So, I think there is a
solution, just not sure how high up on their priority list it is. But I know
that from talking with others, there are many of us that are anxiously
awaiting some improvement.

Thanks Gerald et al. Turning off the NB did the trick.

So..because the NB operates over the entire bandwidth..I don't fully
understand why that would make the noise floor jump due to strong adjacent
signals. Sorry I am sometimes slow on the uptake.

Mark,

AGC operates only on the final filtered bandwidth so pumping from other
signals does not make sense. Do you have the noise blanker turned on? That
might do it since it operates on the entire bandwidth.

IARU HF championship. I notice that with a lot of strong signals, it seems
to be overwhelming the AGC. I have the preamp off, ACG settings don't seem
to matter and neither does the AGC-T setting. The symptom is that the
background noise seems to jump in according to strong SSB or CW signals
within the 96 kHz passband.

Any thoughts or comment?

Yup! I was just there last week. They were all there burning the midnight
oil on the F1500 and the VU module. They are *NOT* sitting around, drinking
coffee, and laughing at the posts here. They were working their butts off
dealing with real engineering problems. I am an EE but not in their class

heads.

They want to ship but if it isn't quite working right, what should they do?
Ship anyway? They know what the problem is but the cure is in the fiddlin'
details and I can assure you, I watched them methodically tracking down each
little fiddlin' detail.

In good faith Flex has published their target dates. Then the bugs cropped
up. They are squashing them one-by-one. You (everyone) will get your radio
as soon as the last bug is crushed.

Give the guys a chance!

Re: [Flexradio] update?

2010-06-15 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi Neal

I am not sure what I missed lately .

Some good examples:

Yaesu leaks FT-5000 mysterious images one month . a month or so later users
have radios.

Apple leaks Iphone 4G . it kills sales of iphone 3G as everyone waits . so
4G better get released quick for Apples sake.

Judging by Gerald's latest VU progress report . now probably would have been
the right time to announce a VU module and start taking preorders . sure
hindsight is 20/20.

All I know is that lack of good honest communication with one's customers
almost always leads them to quickly becoming someone else's customer.

Hi Kevin

You must have missed the exchanges a couple of weeks ago with a few users
proclaiming loss of faith (and worse) at the plans that Gerald would
frequently make to the user community. He has gotten bitten several times by
these few and after while I am sure decided that advance information, even
caveated with the usual disclaimers abt "stuff happens" was not valuable to
the user community nor their reputation.

This is a classic case of "be careful what you ask for". You might get it!

When the FLEX-VU5K and the FLEX-1500 become fully available, there will be

Kevin,

We are damned if we do and damned if we don't. Your place in the queue is
determined by the date of your pre-order. Many people feel that being in
the pre-order queue has value, given that the radios have to be scheduled
into our office over time for the upgrade.

I will give you the best information I have at the moment. As of this
afternoon, we are now very pleased with the performance numbers we are
getting on both VHF and UHF with the early in-house production units. Over
the next week, we will start bringing in the first few radios for retrofit
and testing. If all goes smoothly with the early early upgrades, we will
release manufacturing to build the first large production run, which we
expect will take roughly four weeks give or take. We will then start
scheduling the queue at a rate that will allow for a reasonable turn around
time in the factory.

Thanks for your patience.

Gerald

There should be a point in every software project where all show-stopper
risks have been identified and resolved (including new risks discovered in
the process of resolving known risks). Forecasting delivery dates before
reaching this milestone is like trying to teach a pig to sing; it wastes
your time, and pisses off the pig.

Being involved in commercial products with a substantial software
component I can see Flex's new position to be hesitant to keep
estimating ship dates. "planned", "approximately", etc. quickly become
dates cast in stone in the customer's mind. Often times it's only after
a key issue is resolved that another will rear its ugly head.

Issues related to the Flex 1500 USB driver have been cited as one of the
show stoppers. Perhaps as the release gets closer a list of critical
issues that must be resolved before boxes go out the door could be listed.

Re: [Flexradio] update?

2010-06-15 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Tim ... I know this is the company line now ... BUT

It is kind of difficult to NOT make forward looking statements while asking
your potential customers to PREORDER.
Ie: there was a V/U product announcement with lots of details and I got an
order confirmation on Oct 29 last year stating I would get an email as soon
as it shipped ... that led me to believe that it wouldn't take too long. So
let's be reasonable ... if you want pre-orders, isn't it fair that you at
least tell people something ...especially if they have been "PREORDERED" for
nearly 8 months? Telling customers that it'll be ready when its ready seems
not only a little bit arrogant, but could possibly hurt Flex's Reputation
and Sales. I don't think anybody wants you to compromise quality ... we
would simply like some factual progress reports.

I worked in the custom automation business for years ... and I know "stuff
happens" ... but if I told any of my customers "it'll be ready when its
ready" there would have lots of fireworks.

So while I do understand Flex's point of view ... I hope Flex understands
their "Customers"(emphasis on the customers) point of view.

FlexRadio has stopped making forward looking announcements related to ship
dates for hardware and software products, so you are not going to hear
anything until products are actually shipping.

When the FLEX-VU5K and the FLEX-1500 become fully available, there will be
PLENTY of announcements on the reflectors, web site and you will get a
personal notification or a shipping notice from FlexRadio when your order
ships or is ready for integration. They will be shouting this from the
rooftops too :-)

I know for a fact that every bit of energy is being applied by the
engineering and software development teams in resolving the gating issues
for delivery of PowerSDR v2, the FLEX-1500 and the FLEX-VU5K. They are
working as hard and as fast as they can, but they are not going to sacrifice
quality for a rushed delivery.

First of all, you have a buffer mismatch.

The Firewire buffers and the PowerSDR audio buffers must be the same to keep
them "aligned". Make this change and see what happens.

Second, you probably are not doing anything wrong. If you are using the
released versions of PowerSDR v1.18.x, this version does not have the
improved wide band image rejection (WBIR) algorithms. That code is in the
experimental version in the SVN TEST and PB-PAL branches. Depending where
in the band the strong signals are located (how far from the calibration
point), there could be images from strong signals heard in the RX passband.

Re: [Flexradio] V/U module is now available for ordering from the OLS

2009-10-29 Thread Kevin Hobbs
I have to disagree a bit ... an 8877 on VHF needs way more than 25W drive ...
60 Watts will do OK and could eliminate the need for an intermediate amp.
So now you do know someone who wants a 60W version.

Hey, I’ve had a day to think about things…

FLEX is making a giant mistake making the 60 watt the standard!

Also it is way NOT competitively priced – not even close.

I don’t know anybody that wants a 60 watt factory installed VHF-UHF version!
Maybe that should be a "high poweroptional upgrade".
Also the very low power version is ridiculous – would take two monolithic
amplifiers to get it up to customary power levels.

Specifically:
Serious VHF & UHF folks want about 25-30 watts to drive our KW linear
amplifiers.
Other folks want 10 to 25 watts to drive their Mirage or TE “brick” amplifiers.

Also, don’t suggest simply turning down the output power. It makes no sense to
put a high power 3 db pad on the output of the FLEX. Also, simply “turning
down the power output” is not a good solution for four reasons:
1. It is an immediate waste of hundreds of dollars
2. It is an ongoing waste of power and doubles the generated heat
3. If the power output gets miss-adjusted you could very possibly burn out
$1000 worth of MOSFET transistors in the outboard amp ( or possibly damage the
tube for you tube guys ).
4. 60 watt version requires returning the unit to the factory – I’m a skilled
tech and am prepared to install the 30 or 60 watt version at home. I don’t
want to give up my transceiver for a few weeks or a month while waiting for my
turn for bench time at the FLEX shop.

I’ve been waiting since May for the 30 watt VHF-UHF module to become available.
I’m very disappointed that things have changed so much. I’d like to have the
VHF-UHF set up and ready for the January ARRL VHF-UHF contest. With shipping
and turn-around time, that probably won’t be possible.

Sorry if I come off “Hot” but this is a big big disappointment.

Again, please bring these concerns to the FLEX strategic planners ASAP!
Maybe FLEX will rethink this offering.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have done a complete image cal recently. Not
sure how you calculated an image rejection of 120dB? The image is only 20 dB
down from the main signal.

It could be a weak image that you could see in one RX but not the
other due to different image rejection. Remember, normally the image
is about 18kHz away (+/- for spur reduction) from the desired signal.
I would suggest that image rejection of 120dB with an IF of 9kHz is
pretty darned good. Have you re-run the image calibration test for
your receivers?

[Flexradio] Problem?

2009-10-21 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi

I am running a Flex-5000A / PowerSDR with DDUtil and CW Skimmer and VQLog
(DX Spots) via LiveMUF. I keep hearings short random "donks" from my PC
speaker - almost as if something isn't happy / conflict or timeout. Doesn't
happen with PowerSDR alone. Seems to happen less frequently with Skimmer
closed. Doesn't seem to happen when VQLog is closed and Live MUF still
running . any ideas on what the problem (if any) is, and how to track down
the source of the "donks" / eliminate? Any suggestions appreciated.

You may have missed the point too ... there is no "bell curve" in ham radio
... the large majority of hams ("market share") are close the death end of
the curve ... more like an "exponential curve" with very little future.
Unfortunately none of these companies are going to survive long term unless
they get a product that there will be future buyers for! Sad, but true.

Lee and Lee (on CW)

You are missing the big picture. It is called a marketing model. Do you
think that they don't want to be a significant market share?

Any industry (ham radio included) lives on a bell curve. It has the 10% on
each end and the middle 80%. At the moment, they likely have not even
dented the 80% of the middle.

You want to be successful? You want your SDR to be around for another
20 years? Then get on the wave and drive it forward. Flex (as in all its
employees) wants this. Do you want MFJ to buy this company in 5 years? No.

You want Flex to buy MFJ in 5 years! (I know how it works, as I managed a
Canadian Ham radio store from 1991 to 1997 that did over $4M annual sales--I
also know what is happening now with Ham radio as my friend now owns the
largest Ham radio store in Canada, and to quote him, thank god for GPS or he
would be out of business).

Re: [Flexradio] Some initial comments

2009-09-12 Thread Kevin Hobbs
I have to agree a little, but I mostly strongly disagree.

I bought a Quad Core Vista machine over a year ago with dual monitors
specifically for my Flex 5000A after I sold my FTDX-9000. I struggled to get
the Flex to run with Vista ... even when it did I still had lockups. After
I finally threw out Vista and installed XP all was good. The basic
installation was a snap. Granted it takes a great deal of additional effort
/ learning curve if you want to add on lots of toys (integrated CW Skimmer,
logging, spotting, etc, etc) ... but the support is good the knowledge base
is extensive with many step by step articles / how to's supporting products
not made by Flex. My FLEX now works awesome ... I couldn't live without the
panadapter (especially compared to what I consider to be useless eye candy
provided by competitive products such as Yaesu's DMU). The Flex gets better
everyday and the updates coming shortly should make this even better (more
features, fancy GUI, and especially the V/U upgrade).

What I love the most is that I run my radio in my office ... the flex sits
below my office in the basement ... no fan noise, no clutter, no multiple
coax's and wires going everywhere (just a firewire, speakers, and mic) ...
very clean.

Unfortunately it is true that this radio may not be for all people ... but I
don't see any real issues for anyone to easily get a rock solid FLEX
installation (XP).

Please let me know how much "money down the drain" you wish to recoop as I
am in the market for another FLEX.

Kevin

I have the same problem with my Flex 5000A and Vista 64. It locks up all the

time. I have tried everything. Reinstall all SDR software. Reinstall all the

drivers, disable UAC disable internet connection even disable Norton It's a
new computer with plenty of power. I give up. Putting it back in the box and

on the shelf with the other stuff that doesn't work like it should. More
money down the drain.

Re: [Flexradio] Birdie Hunting

2009-09-08 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Better not to call them Birdies of else Tim will get upset again - rather
"interference".

I had much bad experience with power lines many years ago when trying to
operate EME from a subdivision - my noise was best after a rain as the
insulators had been washed ... I convinced our power authority to high pressure
wash and that did the trick, at least for a little while - they also replaced 2
bad ones. I am in Canada, so we get salt residue on our insulators from salting
the roads in winter. I used to be able to pinpoint the problem tower as my
array was very narrow.

My noise is all but gone ... I got rid of the Linksys router - the ethernet
cables were radiating crap ... replaced with NetGear and no more issues!

Time for an update, I think!

I think most of you have received photos of what I'm contending with
and for several reasons I felt it was definitly the power company's
creation. considerable evidence was present to indicate that the
noise was both on the power line and also being radiated.

Fortunately, since there isn't too much SDR equipment in this corner of
Wisconsin, periodically I get requests from people who want to see the
stuff in person. Last week a couple of guys came. One of them was a
retired maintenance supervisor from my power company! He took one
look at the panafall, asked that I give him some examples of what this
stuff sounded like and without hesitation announced that it was coming
from MOV or insulator breakdown, probably both and not too far from me.
Now comes the problem. This is one of the smallest farmer's co-op
power companies in the state and do not have very much in the way of
technical expertise. They will have to borrow "someone" and some
equipment. So I will probably have to wait some time for things to
happen. Actually, since we are in the middle of a drought, the noise
isn't too bad at the moment. I know I have to wait for a
"resurrgence."

Re: [Flexradio] V/U Upgrade

2009-08-24 Thread Kevin Hobbs
OK ... but here is a copy of a post I made to the VHF reflector on the
weekend in response to noise about some Icom 9100 ... I truly believe that
there is more of a market than one might think.

IMHO ... another case of 10 lbs of crap in a 5 lb bag from a VHF perspective
... I don't believe there is currently anything high performance for us
VHF'ers. Just too much stuff crammed in to be good at everything and be
intuitive and easy to use ... always a compromise when combining so much. I
really like my Flex 5000 and I will be at the top of the list for adding V/U
upgrade to it later this fall. Personally I could do without with U part as
well ... if a VHF rig doesn't have 222 then why bother stretching
performance up to 432 ... just easier to run all outboard after 2m. On my
wish list is simply a high performance rig for 6 and 2 with easy TVTR
interface ... if you really have add more then I guess 28 MHz would be handy
... been waiting forever so I doubt it is going to happen anytime soon. They
can get rid of built in antenna tuners too ... never could understand
forcing something to do what it doesn't want to do rather just using the
right thing. I guess the FT-736R came closest, but it really needed one more
slot so you could 6,2,222,432,1296 all in one box ... something like that
now with 100W per band and panadapter capabilities like the Flex would be
great.

No. It has to use the Firewire/ADC/DAC/TCXO interface on the FLEX-5000 TRX
board to operate.

Market research shows that V/U only, all mode radios are just too small of a
market share to justify the development expense.

That is it, exactly. A power connector has to be added to the PA board for
the 60 watt version.

Barry,

The way I understand it, it is the power handling capability of the built-in
connectors used by the VU. To get to 60 watts, separate power wiring must
be added. Maybe someone from Flex will give a better explanation.

I'm just curious about the '5000 transverter field upgrade. Why is the
field upgrade limited to the 30W version and the 60W version requires a
factory install?

Did you have a large 240 core? 2.4 inches, allows a ton of turns on it, it
takes a lot!

Not all routers are created equal, apparently some are not as bad as others.
I've got a Linksys here that we use for ARES events, I'll see if I can get
it hooked up and report back to you if it is better or worse.

Re: the router..

Best thing to do is take it offline, stomp it with a nice set of boots on,
then dance around it in circles while singing your favorite chant..

If that does'nt suit you, you could do what I did and get a FT240-43 core
and wrap the power and ethernet leads going into and and out of the router
through it as many times as you can. My router also puts out noise on HF,
mostly 20-160 meters, the choke helped a lot. Most of the interference was
being radiated by the one eithernet cable coming out of the router.

I think the Sounds Sweet speaker is actually just a subwoofer from a
non-amped set of computer speakers (and it is way too big for
sitting on a desk). I have the Bose computer speakers and they work
really well, no RFI, etc. You also might consider the set of Boston
Acoustic speakers that Audio Advisors has on sale right now for 30
bucks, they look like they might be a great buy.

Re: [Flexradio] 6 meters recieve on 5000

2009-06-27 Thread Kevin Hobbs
What's the big deal ...

Solution 1: Don't worry about, it's not all that bad, and when the band is
open, its open ... you may miss a few weak ones.
Solution 2: Add an external 6m Power Amp that also has a preamp.
Solution 3: Add any one of the nice external preamps to the convenient RX
IN/OUT Loop that Flex conveniently "engineered in" to provide a flexible
and easy way to improve to anyone's personal taste.

I only operate 6m these days ... so my complaint is more like "why is that
other useless junk in the 5000A (HF, Tuner, etc)" (haha)

[Flexradio] Antenna Selection

2009-06-22 Thread Kevin Hobbs
I have an idea for what I consider would be an improvement in operating the
Flex.

I can't say that I am all that fussy about opening the "Antenna" form
whenever I want to change antennas. I really liked the way my FTDX-9000
handled the antenna selection . it has a simple set of 5 buttons (Ant1,
Ant2, Ant3, Ant4, RX) . you can click any antenna for the Main or Sub or
both . and then they simply light the LED color to match the Main, or Sub,
or a Mixture color to indicate both Main and Sub sharing the same antenna. I
found this to be very good. Perhaps the Flex could take advantage of a
simple set of buttons like that? What does everyone else do . just leave
that form open all the time?

Re: [Flexradio] User Files

2009-06-09 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi Simon

Thanks ... I have struggled with Vista x64 for 6 months ... I honestly don't
mind it for my personal use, but it doesn't play well with the Flex-5000A /
PowerSDR (at least not for me). It hangs all the time, I am running in "Test
Mode" so that I can get CW Skimmer to run with it, etc. And I really want
pretty betty. I have held off doing this for a long time ... but I am
listening to what the experts on this reflector have told me, and XP is the
way to go, at least for now. Win7 will have all the same compatibility
issues that I currently have with Vista x64 ... in a year, maybe OK. The
only downside as I see it is that now very much of my 8GB Ram will be used
after I switch to XP, but everyone says that performance will be just as
good if not better anyway. So, I do this - hopefully well informed and with
all things considered. Besides which, why should I pay MS for Win7 when I
already own XP and Vista x64 ... they already have enough of my money for
all they grief they cause!

I have got to agree - at least a little bit. My mailbox runneth over with
Flex every day lately. Tempted to unsubscribe, but I don't want to miss any
of the really valuable information that many post - I don't have a lot of
interest in the 3000 which seems to be the big focus since they started
shipping. I thought at least some separation on the reflector into Flex
1000, 3000, 5000 sub-groups might be valuable?

Re: [Flexradio] 5000A 6 meter MDS/NF

2009-03-14 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi Clay

Thanks for the tests ... very interesting to me as I now primarily stick to
6m. I use the 5000A with DEMI 6m preamp in the RX Loop. A few quick
clarifications:

1) Was the preamp in the RXin/out Loop or in the Ant Line?
2) Which Antenna Jack did you use (wondering if there is extra switching in
any of the 3 paths)?

Subject: [Flexradio] 5000A 6 meter MDS/NF (was Flex-1500 and multiple
transverters)

I finally got around to checking the 6M performance of my 5000A in the lab
and thought I'd share the results. I'm using an ARR P50VDG pre-amp spec'd
at 24 dB gain and 0.5 dB NF. I don't have any way to confirm a noise figure

that low, but the measured gain is 26 dB. I measured the 500 Hz CW MDS at
50.125 for all four combinations of internal and external preamps turned on
and off. The results are as follows:

Ext/Int Preamp 500 Hz MDS/NF
OFF/OFF -112 dBm/35 dB
OFF/ON -126 dBm/21 dB
ON/OFF -138 dBm/9 dB
ON/ON -145 dBm/2 dB

MDS was measured using an HP 4396A with an HP 100 dB attenuator as the
signal source and an HP 400EL RMS voltmeter connected to the headphone jack.

>From a calibration standpoint, the 4396A/attenuator input signal levels
agreed with the PowerSDR signal level readings 100%. I figure that my
measurement uncertainty is +/- 0.5 dB, with the 2dB NF measurement being
the most uncertain. If I calculate the NF of the receiver using the 26 dB
gain and 0.5 dB NF of the ARR preamp and the measured 21dB NF of the 5000A
(internal preamp on), then I get a NF of 1.6 dB (within my assumed
measurement uncertainty).

For some subjective on-the-air tests, I compared it to a 756ProIII. For
reference, the measured 6M 500 Hz MDS/NF on my 756 ProIII is -142dBM/5dB
(preamp 2 enabled).Without the external preamp, I can copy signals on
the ProIII that are difficult at best to pull out of the noise on the 5000A.

With the external preamp, the 5000A seems to hear slightly better especially

on CW with very narrow filter settings. Also the noise blanker on the 5000A

is significantly better than the ProIII when local power line noise flares
up.

For anyone serious about 6M, I wouldn't even consider using the 5000A
without an external preamp. But with one, it looks like it is going to
perform really well on 6M. While we're waiting for the 6M Es season to
start, I'm going to try to make a few 6M EME contacts with it, especially
near the end of this month when E51SIX is on the air from the South Cook
Islands.

I have my order in for the Flex-1500 and hope that more 6M gain is provided
on it. It won't be as convenient to use an external preamp with that radio
and on 6M an extra 20 dB of front end gain will make a huge difference in
performance.

I just finished building a DEM 6m LAN unit for my 5000A and I found that it

Clay,

I looked at both of those preamps too. I eventually decided on a Down East
Microwave 6MLNA in conjunction with a narrow bandpass filter (ICE 412). One
reason was it had a lower gain value than the ARR unit. But you don't have
to worry too much about the output gain since you can mitigate it by
lowering the AGC-T (threshold) setting in PowerSDR and you can turn off the
internal 6m preamp too.

I just ordered my Flex 5000A and now need to decide which 6M preamp to use,
but I'm now sure how much gain is needed. My 6M interests include weak
signal (EME, tropo and M/S) and contests where I have a few really loud
local signals to contend with.

I've looked at the ARR P50VDG which has 24 dB gain and a 0.5 dB NF, and the
Down East Microwave 6MLNA which has 18 dB gain and a 0.7 db NF. I don't
want to add more gain than necessary to achieve great receive performance.
My current 6M rig is a 756 ProIII which has been a good performer. I'm
hoping to hear even better once I have the 5000A up and running.

Suggestions or comments anyone?

Subject: [Flexradio] CW Skimmer.Again!

A few days ago Gary, W7FG, posted a problem to the group that he was having
with CW Skimmer. I originally have had CW Skimmer working great here with
PowerSDR, however as of late I am having issues with it to the point I am
about to throw in the Skimmer towell.

The specific problem is this:

The frequency readout on PowerSDR and CWSkimmer are the same. If I change
frequency they both track and agree and are correct. I can see stations on
the CWSkimmer display, they are decoded and all is fine...except that the
frequency where the station is shown on the vertical frequency scale on the
right side in the Skimmer display is off by more than 3 KHz...sometimes a
lot more, and if I click on a station in the CWSkimmer disply, PowerSDR will
change to that frequency and the digital frequency display window in Skimmer
will change to that frequency also (same freq as displayed in PSDR), but
that ain't where the station actually is. The stations traces moves
somewhere else when I click it.

I've gone through the settings a hundred times on several different days,
I've completely uninstalled Skimmer and reinstalled it, changed settings,
rebooted, rechecked and recussed many times, so now I am seeking
professional help.

Any assistance and advice is greatly appreciated. All other 3rd party
programs and applications work fine, PowerSDR is working fine, CWSkimmer is
working, just the freq issue.

My stuff:
PowerSDR 1.14.0
CWSkimmer 1.3
VAC 4.09

I agree with Tim. The quality of the speakers and headphones make a big
difference with the SDR-1000. Heil headphones work well, I just wish I
could find a higher quality set of headphones with a high quality mike.

Kevin,

I am using a pair of Klipsch computer speakers that have the same I/O
arrangement as Dudley's Bose. These are very nice, easy to listen to
and are 100% RF proof. You have the best receiver you can buy in the
SDR-1000, don't skimp on the audio transducers. I think you should be
seeing a trend here where your $9.95 computer speaker are not going to
give you optimal performance matched with the radio, but spending a few
$$$ more and buying from a manufacturer that are leaders in their market
(Altec Lancing, Harmon Kardon, Bose, etc..) is a good buying decision.

For headphones, I use studio quality headphones from AKG, K240s. Heil
are OK, but there have been numerous reports of quality issues recently.
I'd check www.eham.net to see what people are saying.

Kevin,

I use a pair of Bose Media Mates that you can pick up at Sam's Club
for $59.. Can't go wrong, sounds really good, has 2 inputs and a
headphone jack, and seems to be RF proof..

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=151426

The other way is to use the sound card that might be on your motherboard
to output to your computer speakers, but I use the onboard sound card
for recording and playing back on the air recordings..

Hope this helps,
Dudley

[Flexradio] Help - More

2006-09-18 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi All;

I would like to thank everyone for their expertise and suggestions in trying
to help me get my SDR running. It is great to get support!

For those who care . here is where I am at now. As you may recall . I was
receiving signals, just nowhere near where they should have been in
frequency. I tore the whole thing apart and rebuilt using a 100MHz Precision
Osc and left out the PA and ATU. Everything now receives bang on. I suspect
that there were some ground and power issues with badly crimped lugs.

Now I have a new issue. TX seems fine (1W) on HF, except when I switch to
6m. On 6m there seems to a squeal with the mic connected? RF feedback on 6m
but nowhere else . anyone seen anything similar?

While I am asking stupid questions . here are some more general ones:

Anyone have a recommended powered speaker setup? From what I read, it seemed
powered speakers were the only option. I sorta think most PC amplified
speakers are crap. Opinions / recommendations? Same thing for headphones .
ie: Heil? Drive direct or?

Thanks Ahti ... that's it ... I'll finish the modification that someone else
started! With only a few days into this, I can see it is going to take a
little while to catch up on the history. 73 de Kevin

Kevin,

It seems to me that the previous owner has not done the modification
properly. The diodes before the RX preamplifier should clip any high
voltage spikes before they damage the sensitive amplifier. See the
Engineering Change Order (ECO-001):

[Flexradio] Help - Hardware Guys

2006-09-14 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi All;

Thanks for all the replies so far with ideas to help to get my receiver SDR
running right.

Tonight I had few more spare minutes, so I decided to tear it all apart and
make sure all looked good after shipping. I found one curious concern. On
the SDR-1000RFE v1.4 PCB, I found 2 diodes attached to a trace between K14
and C47 . the other end of both diodes go thru the PCB near T2, but they
aren't soldered top or bottom . the PCB bottom solder mask has been scraped
away where the diode leads thru to the bottom, but no solder. Is this a
factory thing or a mod / upgrade that the previous owner got part way thru?
I do not see these diodes in the RFE schematic? I assume soldering them in
is a good idea? I doubt this is the problem I was looking, but who knows.

The oscillator didn't seem to be seated all that well, but I am going to put
the external ref in its place anyway before reassembly.

[Flexradio] Help - Suggestions

2006-09-13 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Thanks for the quick replies and suggestions so far.

Larry:

The connections in the back seem good . I wiggled etc with no change.

I will check the sound card output level (M44) . not exactly sure, but I did
follow the setup guide pics.

I am using powered speakers.

Tony:

I have tried all settings of the preamp . off thru high increases as one
would expect.

Gerald:

Thanks for the screen . mine is a little different.

I just did some additional tests. I ran the scanner until I found something
good .. ie: WWV at 2.8MHz . I disconnected the antenna and connected my sig
gen at 2.5MHz and it was there. So, at the bottom end I seem to be 300KHz or
os. I tried a 5MHz signal and it showed up at about 5.6MHz on the SDR.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a 10MHz signal (I expected it to be around
11.2MHz). So, something goofy is going on. Using the scanner I found that I
am receiving lots of signals, but I don't think they are as strong as they
should be and they sure aren't in the right place.

More suggestions to try tomorrow? Bedtime now . thanks for help &
suggestions!!!

TNX Kevin

[Flexradio] Newbie - Help

2006-09-13 Thread Kevin Hobbs
Hi All;

I purchased a complete SDR-1000 package used and received it yesterday.
Since then I have spent quite a bit of time trying to get this thing to go.

The SDR is powered . all relays seem to work fine . rig turns on fine. I am
convinced that all software and interconnects are correct. I get static
noise and tonight I found one shortwave station that was coming thru on
3.843 MHz (I imagine this is a huge station that oughta being than the -80 I
receive at . very few if any other weak signals) - obviously in the wrong
place, so I suspect a master osc problem or something. The troubleshooting
guide wasn't much help. Anyone have any ideas about something stupid I may
have missed?

Any suggestions / help appreciated.
