 Last question: the wiki
http://wiki.flightgear.org/Building_FlightGear_-_Linux is not up to date
regarding how to build from git. It talks about running autogen.sh and
configure. These are only to be found in the master branch. I built simgear

Should I update the wiki, add a paragraph on ccmake?
No need for a paragraph! As I understood the last changes, autogen.sh +
complete autoconfigure is history it SG/FG, so only cmake is there.

I use out-of-source-tree builds btw. (really easy to archive).

Thank you. I am waiting for your comments.

Same above. Nice improvement.

 Old line: '1 18 0 1 04W Keech\n'
 New line: '1 18 0 1 04W Field of Dreams Airport\n'
I think it is hard to validate them but these \n are not parsed well in

[Flightgear-devel] Stereo sounds no longer supported?

2011-12-06 Thread Roland Häder
Hi,

I came up with two ideas about no longer working stereo sounds. But
first an example:

-

3D audio
effects: /opt/fgdata/Aircraft/CRJ700-family/Sounds/touchdown.wav
failed to load sound buffer:Warning: STEREO files are not supported for

failed to load sound buffer:Warning: STEREO files are not supported for
3D audio
effects: /opt/fgdata/Aircraft/CRJ700-family/Sounds/touchdown.wav
-

These kind of messages are flooding heavily with latest GIT/master. So I
have two ideas of it:

1) Please make it as a non-fatal warning (how long was deprecation
time?) so aircraft developers have to convert their sounds.

2) Please do somthing against flooding of those messages. it slows down
fgfs.

Regards,
  Roland

Some of the features should be the following
 a) ability to control multiple airplanes
By Control I mean the following but not limited to heading, cleared
altitude/level, rate of climb/descent, heading to a waypoint, instruct
plane to perform a specific instrument approach procedure or proceed
visually if requested by pilot, force a go-around, the plane should be able
 to land on its own.
 b) ability to control vehicles in the airport, ie simulate runway
 incursions , maintenance work etc
 c) simulate emergencies unusual situations ie, flapless approach, engine
 failure, bird strike etc

Anyway the above is not a complete list of what a proper tower simulator
should be from the controllers perspective but as a proof of concept i

Yes, maybe most of those features are already implemented in the ATC-ML
model. Please take a look at these screen shots which I made with latest
GIT:

http://flightgear.mxchange.org/pub/screenshots-master/fgfs-screen-023.png
http://flightgear.mxchange.org/pub/screenshots-master/fgfs-screen-024.png
http://flightgear.mxchange.org/pub/screenshots-master/fgfs-screen-026.png

It may not show all features, but it shows e.g. that you handle multiple
airplanes. So maybe just this aircraft needs some extending/expanding
or some missing features being added and not a whole simulation based in
FGFS needs to be written.

The controls in 023.png are for sending pre-defined messages to a pilot
(or some to all airmen). The last shows (upper right corner) a screen
when you have clicked on one pilot name (from the list in 023.png) or on
empty space (e.g. to send it to all airmen).

Regards,
Roland

2011-07-03 Thread Roland Häder
Hi Bruce,

this is how I configure osg (3.0.0 ATM):

 reconfigure.sh --
#!/bin/sh

export CFLAGS=-g -O3 -fPIC
export CXXFLAGS=-g -O3 -fPIC

cmake -D CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE:STRING=Release -D \
CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH=/opt ../../osg/
 reconfigure.sh --

As you can see, I specify ../../osg/ which means I'm doing a so called
out-of-source-tree build. Jester told me that this has the big advantage
that the checkout (source) tree doesn't get polluted with build files so
it remains in a clean state. And you can have differently configured
source trees (e.g. one with Release, other with Debug and both with
different install prefixes).

Regards,
Roland

PS: Didn't we told this all some weeks ago to another guy? I would
recommend setting up a wiki page for easier build documentation and if
already done, to update it with these information.

2011-06-08 Thread Roland Häder
Hi,

why make it all so complicated? FGFS is GNU GPL (2/3?). Report that scam
to the FSF (Free Software Foundation). Maybe you will get nothing better
back than just to report that video to youtube (show prove to youtube,
and they must listen) but at least their scamming activity becomes more
popular and that fact that FGFS is free software.

As far as I know you are legally allowed to do what they are doing as
long as you provide the full corresponding source code and where you can
get it freely (libre). As I checked their webpage out, there are no such
things: No link to flightgear.org and no provided full source code.

So for my understanding they are violating the GNU GPL. You SHOULD
report that to the FSF and maybe gpl-violations.org

[Flightgear-devel] Idea: Priority for loader threads?

2011-06-06 Thread Roland Häder
Hello,

I came up with this idea while I was flying around (long distances, e.g.
EDDF to LFML) and experienced some hicks (huge FPS loss but after a
a half second restored back to normal). I think at this short moment
FGFS is loading scenery, models and so on.

Wouldn't it be possible to set lower priority for those loader
processes? I think no user can be asked to buy an expensive SCSI
hardware system (which would lower the CPU usage compared to IDE/SATA
systems).

I mean somthing like niceness for forked loader threads, like we have
on Uni*/Linux boxes. So the main simulation thread would have more CPU
cycles left than the loader (which can quietly load in background).

Roland

[Flightgear-devel] Crash dumps when they happen?

2011-05-27 Thread Roland Häder
Hi all,

in an other game called 'WarZone 2100' [1] if crash occurs, a very nice
crash dump will be generated. I wonder if you can port that [2] to fgfs?
So users can easily send you bug a bunch of very basic information (e.g.
backtrace and such) to you without having knowledge about doing that.

[Flightgear-devel] broken textranslate animations

2011-05-27 Thread Roland Häder
Hi all,

according to Skyop, the textranslate animations are broken on my system.
I have latest GIT/master of sg/fg/fgdata and OSG is 2.8.4. I use the
nvidia GPU driver:
---
OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 270.41.19
---

So I have latest (stable?) OSG and GPU drivers.

Some weeks ago, all went fine with the A320-211 and many other models
(e.g. A380, 777-220ER) that have displays and horizon instrumentation.
But with some recent introduced commits, they got messy.

To show you what I mean, here are some screenshots:
http://flightgear.mxchange.org/pub/screenshots-master/

In all the horizon instrument is no longer working (as it does before)
and the displays in the A320-211 model (A320-family) are not really
working (missing graphics here and there).

If you need more, let me know it. :) I can also handle gdb a little, so
if you require, I can try to set break points (please assist me).

Regards,
Roland

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Splitting fgdata

2011-04-20 Thread Roland Häder
Hi,

you can download my fgdata bundle from here [1]. You can (and should)
verify it with provided hashes and signature (GPG). After that you can
extract it with gitbundle (or so). The usage of that tool should be
widely documented.

Anyway, I like your idea (and many others here as well) because it
limits the fgdata repository only to the minimum-needed files to launch
FGFS.

I will try to add a shell script to automatically recreate the bundle

[Flightgear-devel] Parking position names with spaces, a problem?

2011-04-08 Thread Roland Häder
Hi all,

for example the airport LFPG has a parking position with a name with
spaces in it. My little launcher script [1] does currently not support
this because of a for() loop will break those spaces into seperate
lines.

Assume that ${OPTIONS} is the list of command-line parmeters (I know, I
should rename that):

-- Snip
# Flushs all options to ~/.fgfsrc
fgfs_flush_options() {
echo $0: Flushing options to ~/.fgfsrc ...
echo -n ${HOME}/.fgfsrc
for entry in ${OPTIONS}; do
echo ${entry} ${HOME}/.fgfsrc
done
}
-- Snap

Can those spaced names be fixed e.g. to names with underscores? Or
won't FGFS (latest GIT/master here) find them?

If not, can I somehow support them in my script?

Roland

I think it's impracticable to force every parking position name
worldwide not to have spaces, especially since it may be just a name
and not an index or logical identifier (What's in a name ? ;-)
Proper quoting should solve most space-related issues in shell scripts
and if this still fails, like in a for-loop, try to insert some unique
character and remove it with 'sed' later, when you're actually writing
 the config file.

 Cheers,
   Martin.

If you write OPTIONS as an array:

 OPTIONS=( --airport=LFPG --parking='P 12' )

 then you can write:

for option in ${OPTIONS[@]} ; do
   printf %s\n $option
 done ${HOME}/.fgfsrc

Now, while we get one option per line, we lose the quote in .fgfsrc.

If you need the quote there, then you may add them in a ad-hoc manner:

 OPTIONS=( --airport=LFPG --parking='P 12' )

or you may quote systematically all the options you write:

for option in ${OPTIONS[@]} ; do
   printf '%s'\n $option
 done ${HOME}/.fgfsrc

but this would break if there is an option containing single quote.
To do the right thing, you have to know exactly how .fgfsrc is processed.

Subject: Rudder is on many airplanes uncontrollable

 Hello all,

the rudder is on many airplanes I have tested (I have very recent
GIT/master, from today, fg/sg and fgdata) uncontrollable. I was told
that the rudder is being moved by wind dynamics e.g. with the
 A318/A319/A320/A321 families.

For example at a ground speed of 15-20kts an airplane must be still
navigateable with the rudder to taxi from parking position to runway and
back (when you land). Can you please investigate here? It cannot be true
that everywhere I went (EGLL,EDDF,EGPK and many European airports more)
that there is a hurricane which blows the tail fin of my airplane... :/

So what I'm trying to tell is that it is completely unrealistic that
even light winds (e.g. at EDDF is now a wind of 18.5km/h) can blow the
tail fin. Airbus and Boing won't build in so very weak motors in their
 products... :)

 Regards,
 Roland

that the rudder is being moved by wind dynamics e.g. with the
A318/A319/A320/A321 families.

So what I'm trying to tell is that it is completely unrealistic that
even light winds (e.g. at EDDF is now a wind of 18.5km/h) can blow the
tail fin. Airbus and Boing won't build in so very weak motors in their
products... :)

Roland

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Compiler Error with Special simgear folder in Linux

2011-04-05 Thread Roland Häder
I use a prefix and out-of-source tree builds to install plib/osg/sg and
fgfs itself.

Here is plib configuration:

../../plib/configure --prefix=/opt

Here is how I configured sg:

../../simgear/configure --with-jpeg-factory --prefix=/opt
--with-osg=/opt

And finally fgfs:

../../fgfs-base/flightgear/configure --with-osg=/opt --with-eventinput \
  --with-logging --enable-osgviewer --enable-sp-fdms --prefix=/opt \
  --datarootdir=/opt/fgdata

This assumes that OSG is installed with same prefix /opt.

You should really do out-of-source tree builds to keep your working
copy (there where you checked out the code from repository) clean from
modifications done by configure.

This can be really easy archived by creating a separate build
directory which is outside of the source code tree.

Roland

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Shaders

2011-03-21 Thread Roland Häder
Hi,

@HB-GRAL: Have you downloaded FGFS or compiled it yourself? If you
compile yourself, please also build a non-debug version which means,
use optimization, maybe -O3 is the trick.

I use these parameters to build FGFS and SG:

export CFLAGS=-g -O3 -fPIC
export CXXFLAGS=-g -O3 -fPIC

Roland

Did a quick check since I did not fly ksfo for a long time.
With all shaders applied I get around 38 to 60 fps depending on how much mp

Enabling or disabling the shaders gives a gain of 3fps.

  Hi all

Can someone point me to the history of latest changes to the
default shaders? I am running a ATI 5750 now with 1 GB VRAM
and get = 20 fps at default KSFO, like the last three years
with much older ATI. What happened, I can’t believe.

Coming back after some months and looking to the development
in the shaders I am a bit disappointed, I spent a lot of work
last year to get the shaders working for ATI/OSX. The quality
level takes no effect to the framerate, 3d clouds are superb
and takes no effect, there must be something wrong again with
default shaders. What changes have been introduced here ? And
can someone point me a git header where fundamental changes
were (re-)made, so I dont have to go thru the whole file history ?

  Thanks a lot, Yves

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Shaders

2011-03-21 Thread Roland Häder
Hi,
All my problems have gone now. I got the cursors back, the shaders works
as expected. I get a frame rate of 40 fps with all shaders enabled and
quality level 4 at KSFO. Now I need some courage to fly with this rate
 of course.
Good to hear that. Also you don't need optimization in e.g. OSG which
would cost you a lot FPS. You only need -O0 if you debug OSG or any
other lib.

In general words: Use -O3 for fgfs/simgear/OSG for best FPS, -g or -fPIC
doesn't hurt your performance but it (-g) helps developers with a nicer
backtrace. If the crash happens with the optimized version of FGFS, try
to reproduce it with an unoptimized (-O0) build (called debug build)
because optimization does optimize out variable values (please ask C/C++
developers for in-depth information) to speed-up things but these
variable values are very often required for devs to pin-down bugs.

So for short:
- Play with optimized builds for best gaming experiences (much higher
FPS)
- If a crash happens fire the debug build up (with all command-line
parameters again) with the GNU debugger and try to reproduce it.
- If you were able to reproduce it, show your findings (e.g. 'bt full')
to this list
- Recommend way to post backtraces is to use pastebins because else they
would make this mailing list unusable

Regards,
Roland

PS: I have no ATI, but a GeForce 9500 GT here, with optimized build I
got FPS ~30-40 at KSGFO and even at EDDF with GlobalObjects installed.

And beside that I am also trying to build a new version for built-in
fgfs for my new OSX FlightGear launcher.

Thanks for all the hints and support, Yves
