Ahem,

Please stop!

I apologize if I didn't make myself clear. I really didn't suggest that
_everybody_ send in a message stating the above. What I suggested was, like
Alex did, that you include your contact information whenever you make a
normal posting to the list.

I hope we can stem this flood of contact messages before all listmembers
respond to this. I really _don't_ want to see 500 messages today.

Sorry!

Remote Displays

I have a I/A system consisting of Micro I/A's, AW70's and WP70's.
How can I get process displays (for read only purpose)to desktop PC's? I see

much should I expect to spend for the necessary software?

RE: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread duc . do

Hi Bruce,

Hummingbird eXceed is but one of the possible solutions. We (internal to Dow
Corning) are required to use SCO XVision, and we get pretty good at making
it work also, without the handholding that Foxboro provides with eXceed.
There are other commercial products for remotely displaying X windows.

VNC (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/) is a freeware solution. Although I
haven't run it on a Solaris box, on my Linux boxes at home, it's pretty
doggy slow. (Perhaps I didn't get it tuned properly.)

Exceed will not do the job for 70 series since the FoxView screens are
native(as opposed to X Windows )

Other Options:

- AW70S which is the called server 70 will give you full or read only
remote access.

- We also sell a package that will bring you I/A graphics (70 or 51, DM or
Foxview) on the Intranet for viewing with a browser (internet Explorer or
Netcscape, Windows or Unix).

Let me know If you want more information on this package.

Re: telnet_mail and a poke at contact information.

2001-09-19 Thread David Johnson

Hi Duc,

I did the write up on the various methods of e-mailing. I would be willing
to write it up more formally for the FAQ. I'll have it to you by Friday.

As far as contact information goes:
This is kind of silly. It is ridiculously easy to make an alternate e-mail
address and subscribe to the list server. Are we really going to start
making phone calls before we answer questions on the list? Most of the
information provided here is freely available to anyone willing to read the
Foxboro manual set (although the list is often helpful with the
interpretation, tricks, etc). If this is a real security concern then we
should start sending PGP authenticated signatures with the messages, and do
we really want that?

I am also sending Mark Holts latitude and longitude to our spy satellites
to see if he is really there.

David Johnson

RE: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread Mark V. Urda

An excellent pure Foxboro solution is to upgrade a WP70 to Server70 WP
version. The Server 70 is a Windows NT Server (Terminal Server Edition) and
allows up to twenty remote clients using office grade PC connected via
ethernnet to display FoxView displays vis either a web browser or terminal
client license. No Foxboro software is required on PCs.

Additional costs associated with approach include Server70 hardware, Server
WP license ,and FoxView licenses.Contact your Foxboro account manager for
specific pricinng info, and request an Advantage upgrade to this state of
the art thin client approach.

I have recently installed Server70, with five additional FoxView licenses
and it works great, and it allows remote display to user via existing plant
LAN. Each remote station can be configured for specific enviroments from
read-only to full WP access.

Hi Bruce,

Hummingbird eXceed is but one of the possible solutions. We (internal to
Dow
Corning) are required to use SCO XVision, and we get pretty good at making
it work also, without the handholding that Foxboro provides with eXceed.
There are other commercial products for remotely displaying X windows.

VNC (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/) is a freeware solution. Although
I
haven't run it on a Solaris box, on my Linux boxes at home, it's pretty
doggy slow. (Perhaps I didn't get it tuned properly.)

RE: telnet_mail and a poke at contact information.

2001-09-19 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

I do think that it is polite and wise to have all of your contact
information on an e-mail. I for one get plenty of e-mails where a simple
phone call would clear the issue whereas an e-mail conversation can be
confusing.

Given how easy it is within Outlook and Notes to apply a signature, I think
one should. Of course, not everyone can, but those that can really ought to.
It's the nice thing to do.

I did not second the proposal for security reasons.

RE: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

50-Series (Solaris) boxes:

All 50-Series based AWs and WPs (Solaris boxes) are X-Windows based.

As a rule of thumb,
* any X-Terminal package for a PC can be made to work and
* Any application that runs on the WP/AW can be seen from a PC.

However, the effort varies with the package. Common issues include:
*   Font management
*   Color palette management
*   Security

Most of this material is covered in the following manuals:
* Display Engineering for 50 Series Workstations (B0193MQ)
*   X Client/Server Support for 50 Series (B0193NV)
* FoxRemote and TCP/IP Network Integration Installation and
Configuration Guide (B0193VR)

Our FoxRemote Product provides a variety of configurations in
support of this type of operation. It includes installation instructions,
supporting scripts, and, in some cases, hardware to fully leverage X-Windows
operation.

Configuration 0 is for desktop operation. Configurations 1, 2, and 3
support dial-up access. Installation support is provided for Configurations
1, 2, and 3 by Field Service. The PSS is:

FoxRemote III - Fast Remote Dial-Up Access for I/A Series
Model 51 (Solaris) Application Workstations and Workstation Processors PSS
21S-7A8 B3

70-Series (WinNT) boxes:

The original MS OSs did not support multiple users per CPU/machine.
In the mid-nineties, Citrix (www.citrix.com )
licensed the source code from MS for WinNT 3.5 Server (not Workstation).

Citrix then enabled the multi-user support that had been written
into the code and enhanced that base to create an OEM product that was sold
to others. This enhanced product allowed multiple users to work on the
machine. It would give the user either his own desktop or a window to an
application, in other words, it gave WinNT 3.5 "X-Window like"
functionality.

Things got interesting when V4.0 of NT was released. MS told Citrix
that they were not licensed to update V4.0. It seems that the OEMs sold
their package for about 5K, Citrix sold it to them for about 3K, and MS sold
it to Citrix for 150 USD.

After some struggles (legal and commercial), MS and Citrix created a
new version of NT called: Windows NT Server: Terminal Server Edition. This
was the first official MS support for multiple users on a machine.

The developers of the 70-Series of equipment had chosen to use WinNT
Workstation as the basis for our offering because of its lower price point.
However, there was no multi-user version of WinNT Workstation. Therefore, we
developed the Server 70 products. There are two: The Server 70 AW and the
Server 70 WP.

The main difference between these and the "regular" AW-70 and WP-70
is that they run WinNT:TSE and can support multiple users.

This is our offering to allow the FV graphics and the Alarm Manager
to be available on the desktop in a similar fashion to what comes on all of
our Solaris boxes.

The PSS sheets for these products are:

PSS 21S-1B4 B3: Server 70 Software Overview Windows NT
Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition
PSS 21H-4U5 B4: Server 70, Style C Windows NT Server 4.0,
Terminal Server Edition

Hope this is useful.

David is right. Anyone who's capable of _using_ the I/A info here
for nefarious
purposes is certainly capable of bluffing their way onto the list.
As David
said, are you going to call those contact phone numbers each time
you post to
the list, even the ones on the other side of the planet? Didn't
think so.

Hi Duc,

I did the write up on the various methods of e-mailing. I would be
willing
to write it up more formally for the FAQ. I'll have it to you by
Friday.

As far as contact information goes:
This is kind of silly. It is ridiculously easy to make an alternate
e-mail
address and subscribe to the list server. Are we really going to
start
making phone calls before we answer questions on the list? Most of
the
information provided here is freely available to anyone willing to
read the
Foxboro manual set (although the list is often helpful with the
interpretation, tricks, etc). If this is a real security concern
then we
should start sending PGP authenticated signatures with the messages,
and do
we really want that?

I am also sending Mark Holts latitude and longitude to our spy
satellites
to see if he is really there.

David Johnson

I believe that Logmate, www.logmate.com, has a product like this. I met
with them in the Invensys Pavilion at last year's Users' Group meeting in

Replace the printer with an old pc (low cost) running a terminal software in
capture mode. Archive the captured ascii data to disk, periodically archive
the alarm data files across your network. From there you can parse the
ascii data however you like and analyze it for nuisance, frequency, or
reports.

2001-09-19 Thread Nadeau, Sylvain

Some options:

- The Alarms (all types) can be easily stored in the AIM* historian.
The Alarms can then be extracted to Excel ( and sorted by date, alarm
type,compound name,occurence...
Let me know if you need more information on the Excel based alarm extractor
package.

- The Logmate package from TIPS will capture I/A alarms (from the serial
port) and store them on a PC for review.

For what it is worth,

FoxAMI can store the messages in Informix on a Solaris AW/AP and you can
down load Informix's ODBC driver to make the data available to PCs.

Event Driven Scripts allows the user to filter messages (Alarms, SOE, OAJ,
SysMon, etc) and run a user supplied task.

>I know there were some posts some time back concerning sending alarms and

We can pull X-windows from any of our I/A workstations, so we haven't tried
anything special beyond that to display live alarm messages on a PC. But we are
dumping the alarms to a text file, manipulating it with awk scripts, and
archiving the resulting reports. We do this automatically each day, running it
using cron. We produce various alarm reports and put them on the network so
they can be analyzed by any production folks with network access.

This is a low-tech approach, but it works and requires no new hardware or
software, just some fairly basic awk scripting.

For systems with legacy historians like ours, the data is in the file
/usr/hstorian/almhist. The format of this file is funky and does not work with
commands like cat, pr or grep. Foxboro has written a script that will dump this
file to a usable ASCII file for you. Then you take it from there using standard
Unix text manipulation tools.

See the Foxboro Helpful Hint #714 for the script. We haven't used the AIM*
historian package yet, so I don't know how you'd go about doing this on an AIM*
system.

AB30 with multiple drops

phone lines via modems. The three modems are connected to the gateway on an

line? ) the gateway communication eventually fails to all 3 modems. The
only successful recovery has been to reboot the AB30. Has anyone else

Solutions?

Re: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread Ron Deen

Hummingbird is just fine, but you need a UNIX system for that to work.
Windows is not capable of remote displaying proces graphics. You can opt
for packages like PCAnywhere or (what we at Foxboro user) NetOp. These
packages "take over" the screen and display this to another Windows
machine. (either simultaniously or on one screen only). Advantage: you
get the same exact screen the operator gets. Disadvantage: you don't
get an additional workplace.

Foxboro has the server 70 solution which will allow for more than one
user connected to a server. This will get you the additional screens you
may want. It is NT though.

More on Archestra

2001-09-19 Thread David Johnson

James Kahlden gave a link to Wonderware's website about ArchestrA
http://www.wonderware.com/Aboutus/news/archive/010626-ArchestrA.htm

And today my Managing Automation issue had an article about it.

http://www.managingautomation.com/Scripts/WebObjects.exe/ma.woa/4/wo/a5c87UX
7hKL02dH8QWv32a2OUuO/4.1.172.25.11.0.3.1.1.6

Here is a brief section of the article quoted out of context. (I gave you
the link, read it yourself!) Bear in mind the guy quoted does not work for
Invensys, so it's just his speculation.

[
As much as ArchestrA will benefit Wonderware and its customers, it could be
an even bigger advantage to parent Invensys. Imagine the benefits ArchestrA
would bring as the underlying framework for all Invensys products, with
products from the various divisions all leveraging the framework for
standard services.

Craig Resnick, director of hybrid manufacturing research for ARC Advisory
Group (Dedham, MA), believes ArchestrA will be the foundation for all
Invensys software products. He says, "ArchestrA is the glue that lets
customers centralize licensing and revision control, and coordinates all of
the software that's running on the floor. It'll also be a platform they can
take to third parties to build products to plug-and-play with the
infrastructure. In the beginning, the biggest benefit will be to all
Invensys plants that need to manage software from Foxboro, Baan, and other
Invensys divisions and really create a sensor-to-boardroom solution."
]

The article was pretty good, but not very specific as to how all the pieces
are supposed to fit together.

We use PC Anywhere with a WP70 configured as "be a host".  Thus operators can log in from home when the plant is unattended.  As far as I know, PC Anywhere has worked okay over the last two years I've been working with I/A.

Application is used at a water treatment facility.

I have a security concern that anyone on our corporate intranet can get into the WP70 it if they know or accidentally find the TCP/IP address.

PC Anywhere 8.0 can be configured so that the host requires a password
before allowing a session. I'm not how "secure" that connection is, but it
might provide the protection (at least from internal users) that you need.

Hi Everybody,
You may remember me from such posts as

Isn't there a package on cassandra, called message manager? Which is an

saves messages in a text file daily which you could then upload in to a DMBS

RE: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread PMcDermott

Whenever connecting a process control system to a company network, you
should follow the guidelines of your IT folks. If they are clueless when
it comes to process control systems (which many of them are), then you
should talk to the control system vendor to get their recommendations as
the best way to secure your system. Here at Hercules, we have a corporate
standard that any process control system that is connected to a plant
network should be behind a dedicated firewall (the Cisco PIX firewall is a
good low cost solution). This firewall will filter out prying eyes by IP
address. In addition, PC Anywhere (at least versions 9 and 10) has the
option for using PC Anywhere login or NT user login. As with any system,
if they don't have the password, they can't get in. Again your corporate
computer guidelines should say something about passwords.

For Foxboro style printer replacement software see www.erus.com

Any old PC can be used to capture all messages or alarms sent to the printer port and
with an added ethernet card can be easily sent to your business network or anywhere.

Replace the printer with an old pc (low cost) running a terminal software in
capture mode. Archive the captured ascii data to disk, periodically archive
the alarm data files across your network. From there you can parse the
ascii data however you like and analyze it for nuisance, frequency, or
reports.
