Hi all,

Is there a way to override the page numbering for a single page in a
document in Frame 7.0? I'm working on a revision to a manual. In this
revision, I need to add new information to a chapter that is 176 pages
long.

The new information needs to go after page 31, which means that not only
would this page be included in the revision, but all the subsequent pages
would have to be added, as well, because even thought the information is
the

same, the page numbers all shifted by one. I'd rather not print 146 pages
when I only need to make one page of actual content change. So, is there a
way to add a page and call it 31-a, without causing all the other page
numbers to change? I tried to search the archives on the FrameUsers
website,

but it appears the site is temporarily down.

Thanks,
dave.

it's probably because you're temporarily lacking inspiration.
That's what you need. You need inspiration.

Disconnected Pages

2006-10-31 Thread Texan Scriber

Fellow Framers,

Does anybody know how to specify the master page to use when the current
page is filled with text? I have combined all my master pages into one
template file. After I create an Appendix say, and the first page is filled
with content, the page that follows does not use the same master page.

Also, if a chapter had n number of pages and some text was deleted, the
chapter no longer ends in even pages like it used to, it leaves all those
white blank pages that have to be manually deleted.

To force even-numbered pages in a given FM file, choose FormatPage Layouts
Pagination, and make sure Before Saving Printing is set to Make Page Count
Even.

As for the Master Page usage issue, I'm not clear what you're trying to
achieve. The place you'd set it is FormatPage LayoutsMaster Page Usage, but
what you'd set depends on the desired effect. If you're wanting to use the
same master page for all pages in the file, you'd pick the page you want in the
Custom field, make sure all the pages are in the range of pages listed in the
Apply To area, select Even and Odd, and then click Apply. If that's not what
you're wanting, you can fiddle with the settings on that window to get what
you're wanting, or repost with some more details. ;-)

Fred Ridder's right: your problems stem from not using the default

to use the exact same Left and Right master pages for almost all the

assuming you use the $chapnum variable for chapter/appendix numbering.

You probably need different default master pages for an index (typically

If your headers and footers include titles or headings as well as
the chapter number, you do need to get at least a little fancy
with the Running H/F variables to account for the fact that
different tags are often used for titles of chapters vs. prefaces
vs. appendixes vs. glossaries. You at least need to know
how to specify multiple tag names in a $paratext variable.
Not terribly fancy, I'll admit, but it's surprising how many
Frame users don't know how to do that.

Can anybody suggest a book (apart from the following books which are already
in my knowledge) on EDD development in Framemaker and advanced framemaker

i) Advanced Framemaker by Kay Ethier/Robert Kern/Bradley Anderson/Bernard
Aschwanden

ii) XML and Frame by Kay Ethier

Thanks regards,

Disconnected Pages

2006-10-31 Thread Ridder, Fred
Combining everything into one template may sound like a good idea,
but there are a lot of tradeoffs involved for little (if any) real
benefit.
It *can* be worthwhile to have standardized character catalogs and
paragraph catalogs across all your documents, but one advantage
of the FrameMaker document model is that this can be accomplished
by importing just those catalogs as necessary.

The problem with combining all master pages into one template is
that you wind up never using the default left/right mater pages, and
this is what produces the kind of behavior you've described. You'll
wind up having to apply master pages manually to most of the
pages in most of your documents, and you'll wind up always having
to delete empty pages at the ends of chapters manually because
once you apply a non-default master page FrameMaker no longer
considers the page to be truly empty. To my way of thinking, it's
much better to have a separate template for each variation of what
the default pages should look like. Depending on your page design,
you may be able to get fancy with things like the Running H/F
system variables so that you can use the same master page for
appendixes as well as chapters, but there's not much downside
to simply having different templates with different default master
page designs for the different categories of book components.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Links not working in Adobe

I have created separate FrameMaker documents that cross-reference each
other. At a point, the links were working in the generated PDFs (Named
Destinations and Generate Actobat Data are selected). Now, none of them
work. (I have now added crossreferences to the master pages, but don't
think this has anything to do with the problem.)

It seems that I must be doing something wrong that should be obvious,
such as not selecting Named Destinations and Generate Actobat Data, but
I don't know what else to look for.

I converted a document to MIF, and it appears that at least one path is
incorrect, if that is what is meat by "MasterIndex.fm'>," because the absoulte path whould be
c:\CustomerDocs\NewUserDocumentation. This is also wrong for a relative
path, if "" resolves to "c:\."

I'm using FrameMaker 7.0 and Acrobat Distiller 7.0.7.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Printing Chapters to Separate files; Was: Links not working in Adobe

2006-10-31 Thread Carol Wade
I have identified the problem I was having with links not working among
separate PDFs. The problem resulted from generating the PDFs from a
FrameMaker book file. I must not understand the Print dialog box option
"Save Book as... Separate File for each document." Although this does
create separate PDFs, the links all reference the filename entered in
the box "Print to File." Obviously then the links are then broken.

Can anyone explain to me what I am misunderstanding or tell me how to
make this work?

Subject: disappearing numbers from PDF graphics

2006-10-31 Thread Rita Muller
Hi Orly,

Sometimes Frame doesn't handle text, fonts, and
numbers placed inside a graphic from Corel, PS, or any
graphics program. Here are a couple of things I've
tried in this instance.

1.) Import the graphic into Frame, then add the
numbers in a text box. This solution depends on where
you need the numbers placed. Best is if #'s surround
the graphics.

2.) Check the Font size in Corel and make it larger
then you want. Reimport then check the PDF for the
numbers.

disappearing numbers from PDF graphics

2006-10-31 Thread Smith, Terry
Using WMFs files in PDFs can cause all sorts of problems, particularly
with all or part of the WMF disappearing unexpectedly. In my experience,
switching from WMF to EPS eliminates the problems.

An aside: The only time I use WMF now is if I need to give the graphics
to folks who don't have the tools to edit the source files. For example,
I can paste the WMFs into PowerPoint for the marketing guys. After
double-clicking the WMF, it becomes completely editable (color, line
weight, fonts) in PowerPoint.

Headings (con't) in FM 7.2?

2006-10-31 Thread Gillespie, Terilyn
Hello All,

I've searched and searched through archives, etc., looking for
information on this and other than a few mentions several years ago, all
saying it wasn't possible, have come up empty handed. So, my question
to you folks is: is it possible to have a heading repeated at the top
of a new page, with the actual words (continued), after the heading?
And if so, how would I go about it?

I'm thinking I may well have to settle for some running H/F magic to get
a close approximation of what I'm after but was hoping for a simple
Header 1 (con't) mechanism. TIA.
