I suspect the user base of FrameMaker comes into play too:
Government agencies, government contractors, corporations among others.

Not the clientele that Adobe wants to upset TOO much, regardless of the
actual number of software packages they purchase.

Re: Structured Frame saving XML

2007-03-07 Thread hedley . finger
Trevor:

Because our XML files are managed by a source control system, ...

... you are using the wrong tool. Source control systems are meant
for program source code where line breaks have meaning, usually
to separate program statements.

You need an XML-aware content management system that understands
that whitespace (CR, LF, TAB, etc.) must be ignored and that
the position of attributes in element tags does not matter.

So don't blame FrameMaker. All XML editors are deficient in this
regard if you examine their source code. But then they all
obey the rules, so this doesn't matter.

Out of Memory Errors

2007-03-07 Thread Zoe Lawson
Greetings,

I'm working on a rather graphics-heavy project.

I made a black and white version using EPS and PNG files, and everything was
fine.

Now I'm making a color version, and things aren't so fine.

1. Some of the PNG files (made with Corel Draw X3) are not being recognized by
FrameMaker as PNG files. Frame asks me to import the image using a PNG filter.
They worked fine in black and white, but no so much in color. They are
different images, the black and white images are not grayscaled versions of the
color. I took copies of the black and white images and colored them. Any ideas
as to why FrameMaker isn't recognizing the PNG files?

2. After trying to print the book several times, being told that images Frame
could view the last time I opened the file 'will be imported as gray boxes', I
get FrameMaker is out of memory errors. FrameMaker has also given me several
Sorry, FrameMaker has to unexpectedly quit errors. Since all the info you get
is Hex, I have no idea.
Are all the color images (much larger than black and white, plus they're at a
high (300-600 dpi) resolution so that they will print well) confusing
FrameMaker?

3. If I can get Frame to acknowledge the PNG files, and instead of printing my
book, I print each individual Frame file and piece it together in Adobe
Acrobat, will I lose any quality as far as a printer is concerned?

Thanks. I'm getting rather frustrated, so any insight will be GREATLY
appreciated. I would like this done by Friday, if possible.

Zoë

What concerns me is that many of these tools are Enterprise level.
Meaning that they are too expensive to be purchased by a single
person, and often require a server from which to run. What that
means, is that companies will segregate writers into those who know
the tools, and those who don't. If you want to get a job, you have to
know the tools. Most companies don't want to teach you to use them.
They want you to know them already. They won't care if you know XML
or SGML. They will focus on the tool.

FrameMaker crashes when file is opened prior to book

2007-03-07 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

I have a book with 8 files (TOC, but no index), 230 pages.
When I open the book first, update it and then print,
everything is fine. However, when I now close everything,
open one of the files first, then open the book file and
print the book file, FrameMaker crashes. No recovery files,
lck files closed. This happens with 2 of my books.

Is this a known bug? I thought that this happens only with
the TOC.

Best regards

First off, that is a VERY open statement. What about table ruling

(1) Numbering issues with anchored frames (2) Changing numbering in a book

2007-03-07 Thread Dona Mommsen

Hi,

I'm soliciting the 2 cents from the pros before I'm getting myself into
trouble, and I apologize for the long post. I'm using Frame 7.0 on Mac
10.3.9. and no FrameScript. I have a book with the following structure:

Title
TOC
LOF based on 2 paragraph tags with the same numbering tag
LOT based on 2 paragraph tags with the same numbering tag
LOP based on one paragraph tag for 'Boxes' in the document
Abbreviations
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
Chapter 6
Chapter 7 and 8
—For chapters 1 through 8 the numbering of chapters is only in the
paragraph numbering, not in the numbering definition of the book.
Chapter 7 and 8 are still in one file.

—Headings are numbered 1, 1.1, 1.1.1
—Figures and Tables are numbered with separate tags, continuously
throughout all 8 chapters
—Some figures are split into panels numbered 1a), 1b), but there is
always one caption for the whole Figure.

Appendix A
—Headings are numbered A.1
—Figures and Tables are numbered A–1
File with more Appendix A, all in landscape format
Appendix B
References
IX

(1) This book has a numbering issue with anchored frames.
The numbering setting is to continue the numbering from the previous
paragraph in the book, and it is consistent in the book and in each
document. However, this does not work when the first occurrence of the
paragraph happens to be in an anchored frame. In that case Frame
stubbornly restarts numbering for that paragraph / tag, and it happens
for paragraphs containing any numbering tag. As soon as I enter the
same paragraph format in the flow (somewhere before the anchored frame)
the numbering continues correctly. Any ideas or workarounds?

(2) In addition, I'd like to make a number of numbering changes. Maybe
these changes should be done first, because it includes restarting the
numbering in each chapter, which could make the issue detailed above
obsolete. However, I'm not sure if there is any order in which I should
tackle these changes. I'm particularly uncertain if I'm missing
something about numbering definitions of the book vs. numbering in the
paragraph format that could get me in trouble.

— Introducing Parts should be the easy part:
Part I: Chapters 1 to 3
Part II: Chapters 4 to 6
Part III: Chapters 7 to 8
I was planning to create a new paragraph tag and to include that in the
TOC.

— Change the numbering of Figures and Tables to Chapter—Figure or
Chapter—Table, respectively, e.g. Figure 1—1. Thus the numbering
restarts in each chapter.
I've done the combined numbering in the Appendix, with a structure of
empty brackets in the auto-numbering format,

e.g. A:A.n+ \t
Should I do the same for the main chapters 1 through 8, or is there
something that I'm missing about the chapter numbering definition of
the book?
Please note that I have multiple paragraph tags for Figures and Tables,
so there are 2 numbering tags but 5 paragraph tags in total: Figure,
FigureWithSource, TableTitle, TableTitleWithSource, and another
paragraph tag for the Figures that are split into panels. The 'with
source' paragraphs have a different spacing, ruler and 'next paragraph'
property, because they are followed by a paragraph indicating the
source. However, they are using the same numbering tag, so there are
only 2 numbering tags, one for Figures and one for Tables. Also, the
paragraph tag for split Figures with panels numbered 1a), 1b) uses the
same numbering tag. However, these panels are not included in the List
of Figures. The caption for the whole figure that gets into the LOF is
either a paragraph Figure or FigureWithSource.
Again, the goal it to change the numbering to Chapter—Figure or
Chapter—Table, respectively. I guess that I can handle that with the
correct structure in the empty-brackets-approach, where Figure and
FigureWithSource have to use the same item in the list. To get the
'Figures with panels', I'll probably need another item in the
structure. Again, the question is whether there is a better way of
doing this, using the chapter numbering definition in the book? Is it
possible to use a variable definition like $chapnum in the
auto-numbering of a paragraph tag?

— I'm also grateful for any tips how to make these changes across the
book without FrameScript.

— How bad is it to have 2 chapters in one file? I don't mind to split
the file. I'm asking purely out of curiosity, and I already brace
myself for the outcry this question might provoke.

Last but not least, all these Lists of … are taking up too much space.
The closest that I could move them together is to start each file on
the next available page. Is it possible to have all the List of
Figures, Tables, and Paragraphs in one file but as three separate
lists?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Dona

There seem to be several bugs in table ruling:

- When a heading row repeats on 2 or more pages, the ruling at the

the correct ruling style. I have to apply the ruling manually.

- When I apply custom ruling and shading, to a row and select only the
Bottom and Top checkboxes, the ruling is often applied to the left and
right sides of the cell.

- When I try to apply custom ruling to the top of a cell, it often does

Re: Conditions that won't go away

2007-03-07 Thread rebecca officer
I have dim memories of a plug-in for clearing condition tags from
books.

Failing that, you can delete the tag out of the book by saving the book
as a MIF file, opening it in a text editor, searching for the tag's
definition in the condition catalog, and deleting it.

After you've done that, check that the tag hasn't snuck back into your
files. Also check generated files, backups (delete the book backup
file), templates etc.

It can be really hard to get rid of a condition tag permanently!

Cheers, Rebecca

Martinek, Carla [EMAIL PROTECTED] 8/03/07 04:55
OK, I'm stumped. Here's the situation:

I used Framescript to rename a conditional tag before I send a set of
book files out to someone else (renamed it to something making more
sense.) For this email, consider the tags as OLDTAG and NEWTAG.

I then deleted all unused condition tags using the PGFWhopper plugin.
OLDTAG showed as one of the tags that was deleted, and OLDTAG no
longer
exists in ANY document in the book (I checked each file to make sure).
When I check the text with the condition applied, it shows as NEWTAG

However, when I go to show/hide conditions at the book level, OLDTAG
still shows there, and NEWTAG does not. I've generated/updated the
book
file, saved all the files, closed and restarted Frame, and it's still
happening.

Any suggestions?

Table Question (wrapping onto 2nd page)

2007-03-07 Thread Jonathan Pechta

Greetings all,

I have a table question that I can not seem to resolve (Frame 6.0). I
have a table where the first 3 rows are duplicating themselves on the
next page when the table wraps across a page separator.

Is there a way to remove this wrapping effect, or is this a bug in FM6.0
and I need to make a secondary table for the information flowing onto
the next page?

Thanks for the help,

looking for a way to automate alignment in tables

2007-03-07 Thread Cybele Knowles
At my job we use unstructured Frame 7.2 on Windows XP. We often typeset
tables that contain columns of numbers. In these columns, we vertically
align cell contents on the decimal. We do it by manually, adding numerical
spaces and hard spaces at the beginning of cell contents where needed. We'd
like to find a way to automate this. For example, we'd like to be able to
drag-select a column and then press a button that says Align on decimal or
some such. Although we have no experience with Frame plugins, I'm wondering
if an existing or custom plugin could be a solution. I'm writing you wise
people to get some advice. Do you think a plugin could help? If so, do you
have recommendations for companies that write plugins? Or is there any other
solution? Thanks very much in advance for any help you can give. --Cybele

Re: looking for a way to automate alignment in tables

2007-03-07 Thread hedley . finger

Just create a special para format just for that column. Then set a
decimal tab for that para font and, in the Numbering tab of the Paragraph
Designer, insert a single tab \t as the number. Now any figures typed
into that para format will always align on the decimal tab.

Re: looking for a way to automate alignment in tables

2007-03-07 Thread Mike Wickham

At my job we use unstructured Frame 7.2 on Windows XP. We often typeset
tables that contain columns of numbers. In these columns, we vertically
align cell contents on the decimal. We do it by manually, adding numerical
spaces and hard spaces at the beginning of cell contents where needed.
We'd

like to find a way to automate this.

FrameMaker will handle it for you easily. Assign a paragraph tag to the
cells in the column. In the Paragraph Designer, on the Basic tab, assign a
new tab stop at the position you want the decimal. Set it as a Decimal
tab, and put a period in the Align on box. Click the Continue button, then
the Update All button. Now, all you have to do is put a tab before each
number and the numbers will align on the decimal point. (Note: in a table,
you have to press Esc Tab to enter a tab. Otherwise, a tab moves the cursor
to the next cell.)

Re: Frame Improvements

2007-03-07 Thread Mike Wickham

Shmuel,

I don't know if this is the issue for you, but sometimes rules don't display
correctly onscreen because of the monitor's resolution or screen
magnification. Let's say the pixels on your screen are 1 point apart, and
you have a 0.5 pt rule. At 100% magnification, It has to be rounded up or
down to display . So either you get a fat 1-pixel rule or an invisible
0-pixel rule on screen. Zoom in, though, and you'll see that everything is
alright because it now takes multiple pixels to display the same line and
less or no rounding is used. Maybe you just need to view your rules at a
higher percentage magnification, or upgrade to a higher resolution monitor
for more accurate display?

Are all these bugs, or am I doing something wrong?
There seem to be several bugs in table ruling:

- When a heading row repeats on 2 or more pages, the ruling at the bottom
of the table, and underneath the header row row are not always the correct
ruling style. I have to apply the ruling manually.

- When I apply custom ruling and shading, to a row and select only the
Bottom and Top checkboxes, the ruling is often applied to the left and
right sides of the cell.

- When I try to apply custom ruling to the top of a cell, it often does
not work until I go into the bottom cell and select Top, and then select
go into the top cell and select Bottom.

FrameMaker is still better than Word, but for the price you pay I think
they should fix these bugs. The ruling bugs are particularly annoying.

RE: Frame's future

2007-03-07 Thread Sean Pollock
When in doubt, fib. You can almost always get an evaluation version of, or
book on, the tool for which a company requires knowledge. If you know XML,
the tool usually isn't going to be that hard to learn.

I got my first tech writing job with no knowledge of Frame in 1997 and was
training others a month later. I'm no Einstein, I just looked up the
information I needed.

Thanks for the help,

have recommendations for companies that write plugins? Or is there any other
