That's right. And these links will also be placed incorrectly if there are
variable-width items preceding the cross-reference in the header/footer --
see http://www.microtype.com/Hmmms.html#0602 for more information and a

The feature is already there. You can do it with any user variable you
create!

1. Open a file. It can be a file already in the book, a separate template
file, or a new empty file.

2. Create a new variable (Special> Variable> Create variable). Give it a
name-- for example "BookTitle." Assign the title of your book as the
definition of this variable. Example: "The Complete Idiot's Guide to
FrameMaker." Click Add, Done, and Done. You now have your variable. You only
have to create it once.

3. Leave the file open. If you close it, the next step will not work.

4. Open the .BOOK file where you want this variable to work.

5. Select all documents in the book. (Ctrl-a)

6. Choose File> Import> Formats. From the dropdown list under "Import from
Document" choose the file in which you just created your variable. Deselect
all checkboxes, except for "Variable Definitions." Click the Import button.
Your variable now exists in every book in the file. Again, you only have to
do this once.

7. That's it. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to FrameMaker" will show anywhere
you insert the variable in those documents. Most likely, you will insert it
in the header on a master page, so that it shows automatically in the page
headers like you asked. Note: If you do this, don't forget to use File>
Import> Formats and select only "Page Layouts" to import the new master page
to the other book files, or your variable won't show because they'll still
contain the old master page layout.

You can also insert the variable anywhere in the text anywhere you might
want the book title to appear-- on the title page, copyright page, in the
body text, or wherever. This has the advantage that, if you change the title
at the last minute, you need only change the definition of the variable, and
then reimport it to the book docs. It will fix headers and entries in the
text at the same time. Powerful!

You don't have to do it file by file. Open your Book file and your Title

Then import (variable) formats to all of them in one swell foop.

This is no chore at all.

Define and set the variable in your title chapter. Then in the Book

I haven't followed this thread closely, but if you have a book, you don't
have to import formats file by file. You open your source file, bring the
book to the front, select the components that you want to update, and do
File > Import > Formats.

In addition, there are a couple of third-party tools to help you. One is my
ImportFormatsSpecial plugin, which allows you to import user variables and
system variables separately. Another is FrameScript, which allows you to add
your own "super" variable functionality to FrameMaker. Of course, it takes
some time and scripting expertise (or money to buy a script), but for the
most part, the sky is the limit.

special character; centerline symbol

The centre line symbol (this is how Windows Character Map spells it) is
available in at least Arial Unicode and Lucida Sans Unicode at position
U+2104. That's beyond Framemaker's reach (until FM8, we hope), but you
would be able to make yourself a graphic in Illustrator or some other
Unicode-aware drawing application by copying the character from
Character Map and saving it as a drawing.

Word is also Unicode-aware, so you can easily get this character in
Word, if you have a font like Arial Unicode. Just Insert Symbol, change
the font to Arial Unicode, and type in character code 2104.

There are also, presumably, fonts made for CAD programs that put this
character in the ANSI range, which would make it available to Frame. A
quick Google got me to http://www.quietdesigns.com/index.html, which
sells a font that puts the character in both its proper Unicode position
and at ALT 0167 (replacing the ? section sign that's normally there).
They have a free version of the font too. I didn't download it to see if
centerline is there or not.

special character; centerline symbol

2007-06-29 Thread Art Campbell
I haven't seen that symbol as a glyph in any font, but it'd be pretty
easy to create in FM if you can't find it elsewhere.

Try typing the L first, because it's larger. Then set up a character
tag with negative spread and the same font a point or two smaller.
Type the C and apply the character tag to it.

John, you're either being obstinate or obtuse. "Nope" has *not* been the

FrameMaker's variable functionality does *exactly* what you want your

In addition, there are a couple of third-party tools to help you. One is my
ImportFormatsSpecial plugin, which allows you to import user variables and
system variables separately. Another is FrameScript, which allows you to add
your own "super" variable functionality to FrameMaker. Of course, it takes
some time and scripting expertise (or money to buy a script), but for the
most part, the sky is the limit.

Repeating Table Header Rows

Hi Framers,

I have a table runs from one page to the next. I've put in the "table

Add a new header row and copy and paste the cells from your existing
regular row into the new header row, then delete the regular row. Header
rows repeat on every page.

quick Google got me to http://www.quietdesigns.com/index.html, which
sells a font that puts the character in both its proper Unicode position
and at ALT 0167 (replacing the ยง section sign that's normally there).
They have a free version of the font too. I didn't download it to see if
centerline is there or not.

Hey Happy Friday to all those affected!

Does there exist in FM, or Word, if necessary, a keyboard shortcut for
the drafting symbol for centerline. That being the letter C with the
letter L written over it, with the L aligned slightly lower.

(I am thinking along the lines of ALT + 0169 = (c))

Try typing the L first, because it's larger. Then set up a character
tag with negative spread and the same font a point or two smaller.
Type the C and apply the character tag to it.

Re: Repeating Table Header Rows

2007-06-29 Thread Rene Stephenson
This should happen automatically, if you created the table in FM. If, however,
it was pasted in from elsewhere as RTF (for example), FM doesn't recognize the
first row as the header row. I know of two ways to fix this:

* Select the "heading" row, right-click and choose Add Row or Column, change
the Row(s) selection to "To Heading", and click Add. Then, move the text from
the former "heading" row into the new heading row you just inserted and delete
the old row.

* Rick Quatro's TableCleaner plugin provides a right-click function to convert
selected rows to heading or footer rows...and lots of other neat tricks for
working with tables, especially the foibles that come with pasting from other
programs. I've found it well worth the money. ;-)

Others may provide additional insight.
