Re: How to delete trailing spaces in one go?

2007-08-05 Thread Leah Smaller
Nowadays, bytes are pretty cheap, and your thumbs can use the exercise.

Bytes are cheap, thumbs are not and actually, your thumbs do not need the
exercise. Each extra space is an extra push with your thumb. Unfortunately most
of us use less than efficient movement when we are keyboarding away and we tend
to suffer from (pick your ailment):
sore wrists
sore elbows
fatigue
sore fingers
trigger fingers
sore neck
blurred vision
lower back discomfort

So, don't be so cavalier about your thumbs, find your nearest Feldenkrais
practitioner and sign up for lessons. You will be amazed at how the process
helps you to work more comfortably at your computer .

Multiple versions of Acrobat on same system?

2007-08-05 Thread Diane Gaskill

I've read several discussions on this list about multiple versions of FM
runing on the same system (it works). Can multiple versions of Acrobat also
run on the same system? I recently installed Acrobat 7 on my system (XP2)
but did not uninstall Acrobat 5. Acrobat 5 now displays an error message
and closes.

From the messages below, it sounds like the answer is no for Distiller, but
what about Acrobat itself?

Thanks,

Diane

The FM install puts on a limited version of Acrobat Distiller (not the
entire Acrobat program) by spawning a second, spin-off installer. So
either abort that part of the install entirely, or install the entire
version of Acrobat second, after FM.

Frame Versions Question

2007-08-05 Thread Sharon Burton
My employer wants to know if this is legal:

We are adding 3 writers. We currently all run Frame 7.2. We will be ordering
Frame 8 for the new writers, with the intention of later this year,
upgrading all 10 of the other writers to Frame 8. In the interim, we don't
want some writers in 7.2 and some on 8. We are also about to release a major
set of products and don't want to upgrade the docs people midstream. We all
know the bad things that can happen of we do that this close to product
releases.

Can we buy the 3 copies of 8 and then let the 3 writers use 7.2? We will be
violating our license agreement?

the truth is that the architecture of these programs and the

I am sure we will get the inevitable responses from members of

But, some list members will complain, how do I know what the

Without reading the 8 EULA, which I don't have access to, yes,
probably it's not legal.
Why not just follow the KISS principle and get three 7.2 packages off
the shelf of a retailer who has left-overs and then see if Adobe will
follow it's usual procedure of giving an upgrade to the current
release if the product was purchased in the release time frame?
Adds up to the same amount of money, but you get everyone on 7.2 and
then upgrade together.

RE: Multiple versions of Acrobat on same system?

2007-08-05 Thread Diane Gaskill
Dov,

Amazing. You described the exact problem we are concerned about at my
company (and why I left Acrobat 5 on my system). We are using Acrobat 7 but
set the compatibility to Acrobat 6 in case some of our users are using an
older version. But even so, we are getting some complaints from the field
that they can't open the PDF files. After much discussion about setting the
compatibility back to Acrobrat 4, we decided instead to put a note on the
web page telling them to upgrade their copy of Reader if they are having
trouble opening the files. We included the link to the Adobe download page
to encourage them to do it. This is much better than conpromising the
quality of the manuals because a few people have not updated their systems.

The puzzling part of the problem was that I was able to open the files on a
system that has only Acrobat 5 installed. I got a warning message saying
that some features might not be displayed correctly but the file did open.
The support guys at my company could not open the files at all. If you have
any ideas on what the problem might be, I'd appreciate it. Is there a
difference between how Acrobat looks at a PDF file (for reading) than Reader
does?

Thanks,

Diane (cleaning system now)

RE: Frame Versions Question

2007-08-05 Thread Sharon Burton
Because of how my employer purchases software, we can't buy from someone who
isn't Adobe when we buy Adobe software. It's a very frustrating purchasing
process.

We were hoping if we purchase 8, then it would sort of cover us on the extra
use of the 7.2 seats in a retroactive way. We would have, in fact, enough
seats of Frame, we just wouldn't use the 8 copies until we can bring the
entire group forward at the same time.

I can't figure out from the EULA if this is legal or not.

Without seeing one of these PDF files that cause problems it
would be very difficult to know what is really going on. For what
it is worth, some of the current clone PDF readers (including the
Mac previewer) have problems with perfectly valid PDF files from
Acrobat (or exported from InDesign and Illustrator). So ...
I suspect you are doing about the best you can by urging users
to newer versions of Reader. Note that if I was saving PDF files
for the general public and I didn't have need for features such
as JPEG 2000 compression and some of more sophisticated internal
compression of objects in PDF 1.5 (Acrobat 6), I would save to
Acrobat 5 compatibility.

Frame Versions Question

2007-08-05 Thread Art Campbell
Without reading the 8 EULA, which I don't have access to, yes,
probably it's not legal.
Why not just follow the KISS principle and get three 7.2 packages off
the shelf of a retailer who has left-overs and then see if Adobe will
follow it's usual procedure of giving an upgrade to the current
release if the product was purchased in the release time frame?
Adds up to the same amount of money, but you get everyone on 7.2 and
then upgrade together.

Multiple versions of Acrobat on same system?

2007-08-05 Thread Diane Gaskill
Dov,

Although (very unfortunately), it is PHYSICALLY possible to
have multiple versions of Adobe Acrobat concurrently installed,
concurrent versions of Adobe Reader concurrently installed, or
some combination of versions of both Acrobat and Reader installed,
the truth is that the architecture of these programs and the
underlying operating system services used by same really only
fully supports installation of only one version of EITHER Adobe
Acrobat or Adobe Reader on one system at one time.

I am sure we will get the inevitable responses from members of
this list that boast about how they have multiple versions and/or
mixtures of Acrobat and Reader concurrently installed and somehow
get some or most of the functionality to work for them. On the
other hand, there are a tremendous number of problems reported to
Adobe that are suddenly cleared up when the user's systems are
scraped of all concurrent versions of Acrobat and Reader, replaced
by a single version of one or another. (Note that by "Acrobat" I
mean any and all pieces of it including the Distiller, the AdobePDF
PostScript printer driver instance, and the viewing program!)

But, some list members will complain, how do I know what the
recipients of my PDF file will see on their systems if I also
don't have a copy of Reader installed, or perhaps multiple versions
of Reader and Acrobat installed? The response to that is to have
test systems (or separate test partitions of your one system) that
have minimal software installations (especially fonts) and a copy
of the target version of Adobe Reader. That is the only way to
truly simulate the user experience. For that matter, old, slower
systems are even more appropriate!

Frame Versions Question

2007-08-05 Thread Sharon Burton
Because of how my employer purchases software, we can't buy from someone who
isn't Adobe when we buy Adobe software. It's a very frustrating purchasing
process.

We were hoping if we purchase 8, then it would sort of cover us on the extra
use of the 7.2 seats in a retroactive way. We would have, in fact, enough
seats of Frame, we just wouldn't use the 8 copies until we can bring the
entire group forward at the same time.

I can't figure out from the EULA if this is legal or not.

Frame Versions Question

2007-08-05 Thread Dov Isaacs
My advice, for what it is worth, is to contact Adobe Customer
Support ASAP instead of relying on the guesses of those on the
list as to what might be legal, what Adobe might allow, etc.
Explain your situation and see whether they might be able to
make some reasonable accommodation for you, especially if you
are on some volume purchase plan. If necessary, ask for a
supervisor.

Multiple versions of Acrobat on same system?

2007-08-05 Thread Dov Isaacs
Without seeing one of these PDF files that cause "problems" it
would be very difficult to know what is really going on. For what
it is worth, some of the current "clone" PDF readers (including the
Mac previewer) have problems with perfectly valid PDF files from
Acrobat (or exported from InDesign and Illustrator).

Thank you, Dov. I'll do that. I was hoping someone might have just contacted
Adobe with this same issue and knew.
