SV: extract changed texts

2008-04-03 Thread Rolf Clausen
Hi,

A quick and simple method is to find/change all characters marked with
change bars to a conditional text, for example called Changebars. Then
select all text in the document and create another conditional text called
Everything and apply it to the whole document. Choose to hide all
conditions tagged Everything and show conditions tagged Changebars. As a
result only the characters with change bars is shown.

You only get changed/inserted characters. If you want whole lines or
paragraphs I believe you have to go for a scripting solution, either with
FrameScript (as suggested earlier) or a custom-made plugin (which we of
course can help you with).

Regards,

Rolf

Ämne: extract changed texts

Hi,
One client ask me to extract all lines that have any changes (=marked
with change bars) to get a rough idea about the amount of text to
translate. Anyone has an idea? There are many many pages, so manual
mark-copy-paste is not what I would like to do.

happy with EditPad.

Thanks,

Regarding browse sequences, a prompt response on the Adobe forums guided
me to a simple solution. They can be created automatically from the TOC.
The automatically generated browse sequence does not work the same way

into whether WWP-style end-to-end browsing can be duplicated.

RE: Fonts for Turkish?

2008-04-03 Thread Ann Zdunczyk
You did not mention which platform you are working with (Mac or Windows).
You also did not mention which version of FrameMaker.

What I do is look at the font that the document uses. If it does not contain
the required language characters I have fonts that I use. If it is Windows
Arial, Times and Courier have Turkish pieces, they end in TUR in your font
window. I have fonts that I have aquired over the years for Windows and Mac
that I have used to do Greek, Cyrillic, Central European and Turkish in
FrameMaker. I even surprised the Adobe rep and one of the conferences years
ago that I was doing these languages in FrameMaker since Adobe was saying
that FrameMaker did not Support these languages.

Let me know if you need additional information.

RE: PDFs as graphics and graphics out of SolidWorks

2008-04-03 Thread Boone Severson
Hello Art,

Can you clarify reliable? Prone to corruption, crashing, etc? After years of
using FrameMaker's internal drawing tool, we're going to adopt an external
diagramming tool. To keep the usability the same, we were going to use OLE.

I've seen the file size grow quite a bit (172k .fm7 file + 200k Visio file
turns into a 4.4 MB .fm7 file using OLE), but it's still the most user
friendly. If someone needs to update a drawing, they double-click and do it
right there.

For those that link in PDF conversions, what kind of filename conventions are
being used? Figure 6 isn't always going to be Figure 6, and due to some
refactoring that sub-section could be moved to another file in the book.

I guess the question is: If OLE has showstopping faults, what's the next best
thing for usability?

Thanks!

OLE isn't reliable, and copying the graphic in makes the files too large.

I just ended a year-long gig that included this, and the workflow we
developed was:
1. Get the free Solidworks viewer application. (There's a free
explorer tool that's also useful.)
2. From the Viewer, print the Solidworks file to an Acrobat printer
instance to create a PDF using the appropriate job options (high
quality print, press quality) .
3. When the PDF opens in Acrobat, optimize the file, but go easy on
the compression and downsampling. This is the key task to reduce the
file size bloat. I don't think it would work as well on a PDF
produced directly from
4. Import into FM.

I don't have any idea if Acrobat 6 is up to the task. We used 7 pro,
and migrated to 8 pro and then 8 3D. So that would be the component
I'd upgrade.

I appreciated all the help a couple of weeks ago on text insets and

using
SolidWorks CAD to create graphics for me to use in FM.

So far I've tried importing graphics saved from SolidWorks as .tif at
50 dpi
(was the default) and 600 dpi. Neither looked good after I created a
PDF
from the FM file. I've asked him to save at 150 and 300 dpi, but don't
have
  those yet.

My client also sent me a PDF of the graphic. When I imported that into
FM
and created a PDF, the graphic looked great, but it took 8 minutes to
create
the .ps file of just the one page with the one graphic and the
resulting .ps
file was more than 55 MB. I envision having lots of graphics in this
document, so I don't think the PDF format is going to work that well.

  Here are my specific questions.

  - Is it common when using PDF files for graphics for the writing to .ps
process to take so long and for the resulting .ps file to be so huge?

  - Anyone have experience getting graphics from SolidWorks? I'm told the
graphic formats it can produce are .tif, .PDF, .jpg, and .dwg.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

2008-04-03 Thread Matt Sullivan
In Googling to verify the SolidWorks format which will import into Acrobat
8 3D or the Acro 8 3D Toolkit, I found the following link. I thought it
might explain better than I can:
http://www.solidsmack.com/013-the-lowdown-on-acrobat-3d/2007-05-23/

Bottom line: If you bring a SolidWorks file into Acro 3D Toolkit as U3D, you
can surface map, articulate, disassemble, then capture whatever format you
want (including the articulating 3D object) into FM 8.

SV: extract changed texts

2008-04-03 Thread Rolf Clausen
Hi,

A quick and simple method is to find/change all characters marked with
change bars to a conditional text, for example called "Changebars". Then
select all text in the document and create another conditional text called
"Everything" and apply it to the whole document. Choose to hide all
conditions tagged "Everything" and show conditions tagged "Changebars". As a
result only the characters with change bars is shown.

You only get changed/inserted characters. If you want whole lines or
paragraphs I believe you have to go for a scripting solution, either with
FrameScript (as suggested earlier) or a custom-made plugin (which we of
course can help you with).

One client ask me to extract all lines that have any changes (=marked
with change bars) to get a rough idea about the amount of text to
translate. Anyone has an idea? There are many many pages, so manual
mark-copy-paste is not what I would like to do.

Regards

Gunnar

SV: extract changed texts

2008-04-03 Thread Gunnar Carlsson
Hi,
But how do I change to a conditional text? The alternatives in the
"Change to" box are very limited, just Text, Character format and By
pasting - I cannot choose a certain character tag. Or?

regards

Gunnar

SV: SV: extract changed texts

2008-04-03 Thread Rolf Clausen
Hi,

1) Select some text and apply the condition "Changebar".
2) Edit->Copy Special->Conditional Text Settings.
3) Find: Character Format: As Is everywhere except Change Bars. Even
automatic change bars can be found this way.
4) Change: By Pasting

/Rolf

SV: extract changed texts

2008-04-03 Thread Gunnar Carlsson
Thank you VERY much, Rolf!! After 10 years with FrameMaker I have
finally found this function, to paste formats!! This made my day (and
it is still 06:30 in the morning!).

OT: Syntax highlighting for MIF in EditPad

2008-04-03 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Hi,

Does anyone on the list know where I could get a syntax highlighting
addition for Maker Interchange Format for the EditPad editor? Seems
not to come up on Googling, but some people on the list seem very
happy with EditPad.

Thanks,

Bodvar

Fonts for Turkish?

2008-04-03 Thread Milan Davidovic
Tried this already on techwr-l, with no replies. As I'm working in
Frame perhaps some of you can reply.

Are any of you creating documents in Turkish? If so, what font(s) are you using?

Thanks.

Moving from Frame 7.1 and Webworks to Adobe Technical Communication Suite

2008-04-03 Thread Jim Owens
Regarding browse sequences, a prompt response on the Adobe forums guided
me to a simple solution. They can be created automatically from the TOC.
The automatically generated browse sequence does not work the same way
as the [<] and [>] buttons in the default WWP template. I am looking
into whether WWP-style end-to-end browsing can be duplicated.

Fonts for Turkish?

2008-04-03 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)

Hi Milan,
We're creating manuals in Turkish, or rather our localization vendor is
doing it for us. Our manuals use Myriad Pro and Myriad Pro Condensed,
both of which are OpenType fonts and have the necessary glyphs for
Turkish.

Fonts for Turkish?

2008-04-03 Thread Ann Zdunczyk
You did not mention which platform you are working with (Mac or Windows).
You also did not mention which version of FrameMaker.

What I do is look at the font that the document uses. If it does not contain
the required language characters I have fonts that I use. If it is Windows
Arial, Times and Courier have Turkish pieces, they end in TUR in your font
window. I have fonts that I have aquired over the years for Windows and Mac
that I have used to do Greek, Cyrillic, Central European and Turkish in
FrameMaker. I even surprised the Adobe rep and one of the conferences years
ago that I was doing these languages in FrameMaker since Adobe was saying
that FrameMaker did not "Support" these languages.

Let me know if you need additional information.

Moving from Frame 7.1 and Webworks to Adobe Technical Communication Suite

2008-04-03 Thread Jim Owens
TOC behaviour for context sensitive help has also been resolved. Parts
of my project had been created in an earler RH version. For a project
built competely in RH 7.0.1, the TOC selection is updated to match the
invoked topic.

Many thanks to all who replied on and off-list. My first line of
attack is to try Dieter's idea and get the fonts we already have
working more fully for us.

PDFs as graphics and graphics out of SolidWorks

2008-04-03 Thread Matt Sullivan
In "Googling" to verify the SolidWorks format which will import into Acrobat
8 3D or the Acro 8 3D Toolkit, I found the following link. I thought it
might explain better than I can:
http://www.solidsmack.com/013-the-lowdown-on-acrobat-3d/2007-05-23/

Bottom line: If you bring a SolidWorks file into Acro 3D Toolkit as U3D, you
can surface map, articulate, disassemble, then capture whatever format you
want (including the articulating 3D object) into FM 8.

Referenced graphic file would be pretty standard.

OLE isn't reliable, and copying the graphic in makes the files too large.
