ANN: German FrameMaker Mailing List relocated

2008-06-03 Thread Michael Müller-Hillebrand
This applies to German reading FrameMaker users that might not have
received a message about the new home for a frameusers-de mailing
list.

After the latest failing of the previous, privately hosted list
server (talk at framemaker.de) we took advantage of the silently
existing mirror of messages since September 2006 on the Google Groups
server. If you are interested, please visit

http://groups.google.com/group/frameusers-de?hl=de

Thanks,

In a graphic frame, draw a diagonal line. If you want the labels to
have paragraph formats, draw text frames with the text-frame Graphics
tool above and below the line, type the labels, tag them with
paragraph format tags, and rotate them to the angle you want (Alt+drag
the selected text frames). If you only want character-formatted text,
you can use the Text Line A Graphics tool. Adjust the graphic frame
size and the position of its contained items. Copy and paste the
graphic frame into the cell; it becomes an anchored frame. Position
the anchored frame to At Insertion Point. Adjust the Basic properties
of the paragraph that contains the anchored frame to zero space above
and below, and the Table Cell properties to zero or negative cell
margins all around as needed. Resize the cell width and height as
 needed.

InDesign's diagonal cell lines are easy to specify as cell properties,
but you still need to tweak the text manually.

Condtion color and change bar not showing

2008-06-03 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I was updating a file (chapter) of a book yesterday (regular, not
structured). It had been set up with conditions (deleted, inserted),
the deleted condition hidden and everything else showing in B/W and
no change bars.

I deleted all older conditions deleted. Now I wanted the new
revision to show the appropriate colors for deleted and inserted
and found the condition tags to show inserted as green and deleted
as red, both with the change bar set to show. However all attempts to
show color or change bar were unsuccessful. I made a new color tag and
changed the inserted condition tag to show the new color, but still
no luck. So my final attempt to solve the problem was to run a compare
on the new v/s the old file and get the fresh changes in full color in
the CMP file. But I still cannot guess what was wrong with the
original file I was working on. I tried to mif-wash the file and no
luck. I tried to mif it and search for something that would shed a
light, but I found nothing that I could really point a finger at. At
least it seemed to me that the conditions were not set in a set of
opening and closing tag, rather that a condition was set until it was
overridden by another condition tag.

Can anyone shed a light on this for me?

Thanks,

Bodvar Bjorgvinsson

The first method described here (How to enter Unicode characters
 in Microsoft Windows)
 http://www.fileformat.info/tip/microsoft/enter_unicode.htm
does work for me in FM8.
You probably need to set the registry key EnableHexNumpad as described.

Thanks! Adding the registry key got it working for me.

RE: Crossing out a table cell

2008-06-03 Thread Lehner, Oliver (GE Healthcare, consultant)
Hi Mathieu,

If you need your diagonal line to appear in more table cells and don't
want to copy/paste the anchored frame every time:
Copy the frame including the line and paste it to the Reference pages.
Upon paste, FM displays a dialog window. Enter a descriptive name for
your new reference frame.
Create a new (or modify a) format in the Paragraph editor.
In the formats' Advanced tab, select your reference frame from the
Frame below/above Pgf dropdown field.
Assign this para format to table cells that need to be crossed out.

This method wont't work if you want the crossed out cells to contain
text too.

I noticed no change. The alt keypad keys still work normally-- hold down the
alt key, type the four digit extended ASCII code, and then release the alt
key. For Unicode characters, you hold down the alt key, _press and release
the plus key_, press and release the Unicode code numbers/letters, and then
release the alt key. Of course, the font must support those Unicode
characters.

sorting lists

2008-06-03 Thread Deirdre Reagan
Hi all!

I'm running Framemaker 8.0 on an XP PC.

In our document, we have an illustration of an assembly, then a list
of the parts that make up that assembly. If we have three
illustrations, then we have three parts lists.

We also want a master list of all the parts lists. Currently, we take
the three parts lists, transfer them to Excel, combine them and sort
them in Excel, then bring them back to Framemaker.

Is there some way to do this work in Framemaker?

Thanks!

Re: anchored frame alignment with insertion point

2008-06-03 Thread Peter Gold
You can align a selected inline (at insertion point) anchored frame
with the same keystroke combination that you use to move selected
graphic objects, Alt+arrow. You can also specify the frame's position
above or below the text baseline in the Anchored Frame dialog box (use
leading minus for moving down). This same Alt+arrow technique works to
move selected text above or below the baseline, or left and right.

Aravind,

I don't know of an automated way to do this, but I have a couple of
suggestions.

-- To eliminate extra space that will mess up your vertical separations
between lines, use the shrink-wrap command (Esc m p) to reduce the
anchored frame to exactly the size of its contents.

-- After you shrink the frame, select it again and set the Distance
above Baseline to a negative number. (You'll have to experiment to find
the right setting, but -3 or -5 is likely to work.) If you have to do
this often, be sure to learn the keyboard shortcuts:

Alt+s a to open the anchored frame dialog box
Alt+d to select the Distance value
Enter to close the dialog box after typing the new value

-- If all your icons are the same size, you can save a suitably sized
and distanced empty anchored frame in a text frame on a reference page.
Before importing the first graphic, copy and paste from the ref. page
into your body page, then (with the frame still selected) import the
graphic file.

-- The anchored frame dialog box settings will persist until you change
them or until you use File Import File with no anchored frame
selected. Therefore, if you create one properly distanced anchored
frame, you can save time by inserting the next anchored frame *before*
importing the next graphic, then shrink-wrapping. The Distance setting
will be unaffected.

So, what's your question?

If you want help fixing the error, you'll need to provide more information.
Start with FM version and OS. Then describe more specifically the steps leading
up to the crash, beginning with what doing a Book means.

Next, tell us what standard troubleshooting you've done, potential causes
you've eliminated, and anything you've learned. For instance, have you checked
your free disk space and swap file size? Have you defragged your disk and
cleaned up temporary files? Have you opened all the files in the book before
replicating your steps? Have you removed one file from the book at a time and
repeated your steps to see if you can link the crash to a specific file?

AFAIK, FM's error numbers aren't something any of us can decipher. I suspect
we've all seen the rest of the crash message, and it doesn't really help. :-}

Printing Error with FM

2008-06-03 Thread Tim Lewis
I had been printing my FM 7.1 and 8.0 files with referenced Illustrator CS2
art on my aging PS printer (Postscript 2). I installed Adobe CS3 over the
weekend and created new illustrations in Illustrator CS3. These new
illustrations are referenced into my FM document, as in the past. However,
they will not print on my printer. The error says, ERROR: undefined,
OFFENDING COMMAND: get. A list of STACK is included with the error.

I can print the illustration directly from Illustrator and I can make a PDF
from the FM file and then print the PDF with no problem. I tried saving the
art as CS2 and CS. I also set the Postscript to 2. Nothing works so far.

I called Adobe support and was told that the new Illustrator CS3 uses PS 3
and something in FM does not interpret something. Before I head out to buy a
newer printer, does anyone have a suggestion to make the CS3 art print from
the FM document (without making a PDF first)?

Based strictly on the information you have provided, you are doing
nothing wrong. FrameMaker 8 is compatible with Acrobat 8.x.

I would try simply rebooting and seeing whether the problem
persists.

RE: Printing Error with FM

2008-06-03 Thread Dov Isaacs
What is not clear from your description is exactly WHAT you are referencing
in your FrameMaker documents. If you are referencing a .AI file, you are in
effect referencing a PDF 1.3 file; FrameMaker really knows nothing about
the Illustrator document format but rather is able to convert the PDF inside
a .AI file saved with the PDF compatibility option to EPS when importing;
that's what really happens.

Thus, what probably happened was the equivalent of placing an EPS file with
PostScript 3 constructs into your FramMaker document. When you printed directly
from FrameMaker, the PostScript 3 is what choked your printer. Of course,
if you created PDF and printed from that (by the way, a much better solution
in general than EVER printing directly from FrameMaker), as you found,
Acrobat (or Reader) has the smarts to downgrade to PostScript language level 2
constructs as necessary for your PostScript Level 2 device.

Here are your alternatives:

(1) Continue what you are doing and always print from Acrobat or Reader
instead of FrameMaker (not a bad choice in the general case -- this is
something I personally do with most all applications these days! I get to
see on-screen what I will print and do some cursory pre-flight to avoid
wasted printing).

(2) Save your Illustrator documents as EPS language level 2 and import
those into FrameMaker instead. This will pessimize things such as gradients,
but otherwise you should be OK.

(3) There is a maker.ini setting for controlling the conversion of PDF
to EPS (I don't have a reference with me for the exact setting). Change that
to indicate PostScript language level 2 instead of 3 (ironically, I thought
that the default for that was 2, not 3!)

(4) Go out and buy a new printer. If you are happy with the printer you
currently have, this is the most ridiculous solution!

Personally, I'd go with solution (1).

Need help with Para and Chapter numbering

2008-06-03 Thread Alan Litchfield
Hi John,

Easiest thing would be to go to FM's help and either do a search on paragraph
numbering or scroll through the ToC. The help actually does in this case.
There are lots of examples of how numbering can be achieved.

Then if you need help in a specific kind of sense, then I am certain there are
many who will be only too pleased to help out.

Cheers
Alan

I eventually got the 8.04 update from Michael M?ller-Hillebrand's site.
Quite a few tries were needed to get the installation to happen. Let me
tell you about just two of them:

@ Double-clicking the installer briefly showed the language-choice
dialogue which vanished before I could click OK to accept the default
English choice. A progress bar briefly showed, then vanished. TWO
framemaker804.exe processes had started up but also a mysterious
adproxy.exe (what is this?), then the whole shebang hung for ages until
I killed off the whole thing. But somewhere early in the piece some
flag had been set which prevented me from launching the installer again.

@ Rebooted the computer and launched the installer again. This time no
dialogues appeared but the three (count 'em) mysterious processes all
started up and hung again.

Variations of this scenario, including many reboots, occurred many
times. Finally, I had the cursor poised near where the elusive and
evanescent language-choice dialogue would appear and, as soon as it did,
quickly clicked OK. This final time the installation fileset was
unpacked complete with progress bar and the familiar dark aqua installer
circa Windows 95 filled up the screen and the installation ran to
successful completion.

Question: Why doesn't the FM start-up splash and About FrameMaker show
v. 8.04 instead of the more obscure 8.0p277? Or why doesn't the updater
or Adobe's download pages show 8.0p277?

Keep up the World's Best Practice Benchmark Updater technology, Adobe!
Or are the strange grammar and content of error messages and the poor
software builds a consequence of shifting development to India? If some
quality control doesn't start happening Adobe will see their reputation
eroding away.

Hedley

Condtion color and change bar not showing

2008-06-03 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I was updating a file (chapter) of a book yesterday (regular, not
structured). It had been set up with conditions (deleted, inserted),
the "deleted" condition hidden and everything else showing in B/W and
no change bars.

I deleted all older conditions "deleted". Now I wanted the new
revision to show the appropriate colors for "deleted" and "inserted"
and found the condition tags to show "inserted" as green and "deleted"
as red, both with the change bar set to show. However all attempts to
show color or change bar were unsuccessful. I made a new color tag and
changed the "inserted" condition tag to show the new color, but still

Crossing out a table cell

2008-06-03 Thread Lehner, Oliver (GE Healthcare, consultant)
Hi Mathieu,

If you need your diagonal line to appear in more table cells and don't
want to copy/paste the anchored frame every time:
Copy the frame including the line and paste it to the Reference pages.
Upon paste, FM displays a dialog window. Enter a descriptive name for
your new "reference frame".
Create a new (or modify a) format in the Paragraph editor.
In the formats' "Advanced" tab, select your reference frame from the
"Frame below/above Pgf" dropdown field.
Assign this para format to table cells that need to be crossed out.

This method wont't work if you want the crossed out cells to contain
text too.

anchored frame alignment with insertion point

2008-06-03 Thread Peter Gold
You can align a selected inline (at insertion point) anchored frame
with the same keystroke combination that you use to move selected
graphic objects, Alt+arrow. You can also specify the frame's position
above or below the text baseline in the Anchored Frame dialog box (use
leading minus for moving down). This same Alt+arrow technique works to
move selected text above or below the baseline, or left and right.

sorting lists

Thanks!

Deirdre

-- The anchored frame dialog box settings will persist until you change
them or until you use File > Import > File with no anchored frame
selected. Therefore, if you create one properly distanced anchored
frame, you can save time by inserting the next anchored frame *before*
importing the next graphic, then shrink-wrapping. The Distance setting
will be unaffected.

Lucy: Charlie Brown, life is like a deck chair on a cruise ship.
Passengers open up these canvas deck chairs so they can sit in the sun.
Some people place their chairs facing the rear of the ship so they can
see where they've been. Other people face their chairs forward -- they
want to see where they're going. On the cruise ship of life, which way
is your deck chair facing?

Charlie Brown: "I've never been able to get one unfolded."

Hello Framers:

We are doing a Book and when we update and then try to save we get the
following message:

Internal Error 7204, 5158200, 5112308, 5159521, FM has detected a
serious problem and must quit.

A file named "c:\program files\adobe\framemaker
7.2\frameLog_08.06.03_16.55.42.txt" has been generated which contains
info that may help FM development improve the product for future use.

Please describe your recent actions and send this, and the generated
file, to fmerror at adobe.com.

Due to the volume of feedback, we are unable to respond to tech
questions. Does this mean don't bother to email to the above
address

So, what's your question?

If you want help fixing the error, you'll need to provide more information.
Start with FM version and OS. Then describe more specifically the steps leading
up to the crash, beginning with what "doing a Book" means.

I suspect
we've all seen the rest of the crash message, and it doesn't really help. :-}

Save As PDF problem

2008-06-03 Thread Chuck Heinrichs
I stumped with senior moment saving FM 8.0p277 doc to PDF with
Acrobat Pro 8.1.2.
FM is on F drive and Acrobat is on C drive.
Message says, "To execute 'Save As PDF' command you must have Acrobat
Distiller 5.05 or higher installed."
Would appreciate some assistance.

Thanks,
Chuck

Printing Error with FM

2008-06-03 Thread Tim Lewis
I had been printing my FM 7.1 and 8.0 files with referenced Illustrator CS2
art on my aging PS printer (Postscript 2). I installed Adobe CS3 over the
weekend and created new illustrations in Illustrator CS3. These new
illustrations are referenced into my FM document, as in the past. However,
they will not print on my printer. The error says, "ERROR: undefined,
OFFENDING COMMAND: get." A list of STACK is included with the error.

Save As PDF problem

2008-06-03 Thread Dov Isaacs
Based strictly on the information you have provided, you are doing
nothing wrong. FrameMaker 8 is compatible with Acrobat 8.x.

I would try simply rebooting and seeing whether the problem
persists.

Printing Error with FM

2008-06-03 Thread Dov Isaacs
What is not clear from your description is exactly WHAT you are referencing
in your FrameMaker documents. If you are referencing a .AI file, you are in
effect referencing a PDF 1.3 file; FrameMaker really knows nothing about
the Illustrator document format but rather is able to convert the PDF inside
a .AI file saved with the PDF compatibility option to EPS when importing;
that's what really happens.
