weird symbols in front of my Chapter Titles
Hi all: I have nine Chapter Titles that feed the TOC. The format of the title is [Variable] [Chapter Title Name] and the whole thing is tagged Chapter Title. Two chapter titles have a bold T in front of the variable. Neither the variable nor the chapter title is cross-referenced in the rest of the document, as far as I can tell. One paragraph tag has an asterisk in front of it, but the other one doesn't. Three chapter titles have an outlined box in front of the variable. I don't know what this outlined box is. None of these tags have an asterisk. Four chapters have no symbols in front of the variable. Any thoughts on why these seven chapters, which only feed the TOC, would have different symbols or none at all in front of them? Also, I erased the variable and ran the book, and got no error messages, but the symbols all remained the same. RE: weird symbols in front of my Chapter Titles
Were these templates imported from MS Word, by any chance? That can be the source of strange characters. As for the upside down T, that can be any one of several different kinds of marker. If you have ever cross-referenced something to that paragraph the marker will remain, even if the referencing paragraph is deleted. Try this: go to Special Marker, then highlight the area of the paragraph where the T is. The Marker Text box will tell you what kind of marker it is. Re: weird symbols in front of my Chapter Titles
Thanks, Clint. The outline box is a little box that is appearing before the first letter of the text. I tried to delete it and it moved to behind the text. Thank you for setting my mind at ease about these not affecting the text. I'm being asked to make changes to these documents and I'm learning as I'm going, so I don't want to remove the one thing that causes the whole document to crash. Deirdre On 7/2/08, Owen, Clint [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The extra markers won't hurt anything, like affecting the printed copy or some such. They don't take up any space in the line. When you go to add a new cross-reference they will show up as possible destinations you can choose from. The only way to get rid of them is to delete the containing paragraph. I am not sure what you mean by outline boxes. Are these showing up in your output or moving other characters in the paragraph around? If so, they could be cross-references to empty paragraphs, or paragraphs with only space characters, or something like that. If you hold the CTRL and ALT keys and click on a cross-reference, you will be taken to the source of the reference, which might give you a clue as to its origin. This works in the TOC if you notice a typo and want to go directly to the source to fix it. One bold T marks a cross-reference to that chapter's old name (I renamed the chapter). The other bold T and all the outline boxes cross-reference a chapter I copied and renamed to create those chapters. Is this normal behavior and should I be worried? Can I get rid of these markers? Sideheads that won't go away
All, I'm running FM7.2 on WinXP doing unstructured docs with text insets, using condition tags to control which insets show in this particular file, in a single-sourced, multiple-author environment. All the graphics are imported by reference, and all have callout applied within the anchored frame as a text frame (rather than a text line, because we used xrefs to hotlink the callout of the part to the table of part numbers). Somehow, one of the container FM files got some setting changed that made all the text frames in that one file have sideheads. Now, our templates for the container file do have sideheads on the master pages for the body text frames, but if that were the source of the problem, one would think that it would impact *all* the files, not just this one. I have been going through this file and selecting each individual text frame that's within an anchored frame and setting the Object Properties to disable Room for sideheads. But, then I noticed something odd... Graphics (imported by ref) in the text inset files do NOT show the text frames within the anchored frames as having sideheads, but when I update now on the text inset, it puts room for sideheads on the graphics in the sideheads when I select to use the source formatting, but it shows NO room for sideheads when I use the container formatting...which completely puzzles me, since all the graphics in the container file are showing the undesired sideheads for the text frames in anchored frames. So, this seems backwards/illogical to me. Anyway, if someone can just tell me what the setting is at the doc properties or formatting level that switches sideheads on/off for all text frames in a FM file, I can just make sure it's set that way in both source and container docs and move on... condition-specific paragraph tags idea
Dear FM Gurus, Any thoughts on the possibility of creating condition-specific paragraph tags (eg para_red, para_blue) that would somehow magically set an associated condition? Do you mean if chocolate, strawberry, or neapolitan were color choices? I know you can create your own color then add it to the color palette and it shows up in the Paragraph Designer. Does anyone have a good way of typesetting Bengali language. I tried FM8 (with its glorified unicode support) and I'm thoroughly disappointed. It does import RTF files alright but messes them quite badly by adding additional spaces and characters. Bengali is double byte and I guess that's where the problem lies. InDesign messes the files just as bad by swapping some characters and decomposing the double bytes into single characters. Any idea is welcome. That's been a misery to me in the last weeks. You can add this to the wish list for future releases, but FrameMaker does currently support automatically assigning a condition based on paragraph (character, table) tags, although it is fairly simple to automate this via an FDK client or FrameScript. So I'm a bit confused by Deirdre's statement, unless it is simply being able to mimic the display overrides of a condition. Re: condition-specific paragraph tags idea
Hi Ben... If you're trying to make it so when you tag a paragraph with a particular style, it also applies a named condition to that paragraph, you'd have to do that with an FDK plugin or FrameScript. It can be done, but not out of the box. ...scott Scott Prentice Leximation, Inc. www.leximation.com +1.415.485.1892 Ben Hechter wrote: Dear FM Gurus, Any thoughts on the possibility of creating condition-specific paragraph tags (eg para_red, para_blue) that would somehow magically set an associated condition? Whenever I try to import a Ventura chp file containing a link to a doc file, I get an unspecified error and the import stops. It's been years and years and years since I worked with Ventura, but IIRC, the .chp file doesn't contain anything but metadata and links. Re: weird symbols in front of my Chapter Titles
Clint: Nope, no tab or space in the autonumber box. The boxes don't effect the printed output at all. As far as I've been able to determine, they are markers that point to the file I used to create these files. The first file, the one with the T, I renamed to a new name. The T marker points to the original name of the document. The other four files, one with a T and three with a box marker, all point to the file I copied to create those four files. I've been looking through my two reference books (Adobe's User Guide and Adobe's Classroom in a Book) and the online help, but I haven't been able to narrow it down further than they appear to be related to coping and/or renaming the files. Hi, Dierdre: The T characters before your chapter headings are markers that are created if you check Create Hypertext Links in the Table of Contents dialog box. These markers enable the ability to jump from a TOC entry to its source by clicking it in a PDF. In FM, you can use the combination Ctrl+Alt+Click on a TOC entry to jump to the source. OK, Steve solved it. The key was the length of the numeric strings that I wanted it sort on. I had to have the same number of digits in the [ ] for sorting, and I'd been inconsistent; some where three digits and some were four. My bad! So, my sort needed to be one of these: [0070 mm] [0090 mm] [0100 mm] [0200 mm] Or [070 mm] [090 mm] [100 mm] [200 mm] Then all sorts correctly. ~ Linda G. Re: condition-specific paragraph tags idea
Hi, Ben: From your comment below, I'm not sure if you're aware of condition indicators. You can create them with text attributes like overline, underline, and strikethrough, plus a color - either one of the default FM colors, or a custom color you create. You can opt to show or hide these indicators; they print when they're visible. The indicators of hidden conditions are also hidden, but with View Text Symbols ON, a marker (large T symbol) appears where content is hidden. master pages and multiple revisions
This is what I would be inclined to do, what Martin suggested. It strikes me as pointless having more master pages than the final document page count, when instead you can simply type the date the page was edited. From your post I think you want any edits on the page to be reflected in the date on which it was edited, not just edits to specific paragraph styles. Is it true that you want to have this function automated too? What I would do that is different to what has been suggested is to manually add the date to the affected page and then cross reference that in the revision table cell. Of course then you would the problem that new content will extend the page count and the edit dates may refer to changes that were made to content that have subsequently moved on and no longer on that page. Which then raises another question, what constitutes a change to content? weird symbols in front of my Chapter Titles
Thanks, Deirdre

And in my TOC, the Chapter Titles all have the outline box in front of them, and the second level headings all have the bold T in front of them. I thought the bold T meant cross-reference? I still don't know what the outlined box means. Were these templates imported from MS Word, by any chance? That can be the source of strange characters. As for the upside down "T", that can be any one of several different kinds of marker. If you have ever cross-referenced something to that paragraph the marker will remain, even if the referencing paragraph is deleted. Try this: go to Special >> Marker, then highlight the area of the paragraph where the "T" is. The Marker Text box will tell you what kind of marker it is.
I have been going through this file and selecting each individual text frame that's within an anchored frame and setting the Object Properties to disable "Room for sideheads." But, then I noticed something odd... Graphics (imported by ref) in the text inset files do NOT show the text frames within the anchored frames as having sideheads, but when I "update now" on the text inset, it puts room for sideheads on the graphics in the sideheads when I select to use the source formatting, but it shows NO room for sideheads when I use the container formatting...which completely puzzles me, since all the graphics in the container file are showing the undesired sideheads for the text frames in anchored frames. So, this seems backwards/illogical to me. Anyway, if someone can just tell me what the setting is at the doc properties or formatting level that switches sideheads on/off for all text frames in a FM file, I can just make sure it's set that way in both source and container docs and move on... Thanks, Rene L. Stephenson

Dear FM Gurus, Any thoughts on the possibility of creating condition-specific paragraph tags (eg para_red, para_blue) that would somehow magically set an associated condition? Ben

Do you mean if chocolate, strawberry, or neapolitan were color choices? I know you can create your own color then add it to the color palette and it shows up in the Paragraph Designer. Importing Ventura files
Dear all, Does anyone know how to import files created with Ventura? I have loads of manual files here that come from various Ventura versions (pre and post Corel). I understand Framemaker only imports files from versions 3 and 4? Were these before Corel? Until now, I was only able to import one or two files which only contained graphics links but no links to doc files. Whenever I try to import a Ventura chp file containing a link to a doc file, I get an unspecified error and the import stops. Are there any tricks or tips around? TIA! Lutz

You can add this to the "wish list" for future releases, but FrameMaker does currently support automatically assigning a condition based on paragraph (character, table) tags, although it is fairly simple to automate this via an FDK client or FrameScript. So I'm a bit confused by Deirdre's statement, unless it is simply being able to mimic the display overrides of a condition. Hi Lester and all. Ah yes, I misunderstood condition. He wants to apply a condition tag to a paragraph tag, is that right? I can change the color in a paragraph tag, and I can change the color in a condition tag, but to apply a condition tag to a paragraph tag, that I don't know how to do. Deirdre On 7/2/08, Lester C. Hi Ben... If you're trying to make it so when you tag a paragraph with a particular style, it also applies a named condition to that paragraph, you'd have to do that with an FDK plugin or FrameScript. It can be done, but not out of the box. ...scott Scott Prentice Leximation, Inc. www.leximation.com +1.415.485.1892 Ben Hechter wrote: > Dear FM Gurus, > > Any thoughts on the possibility of creating condition-specific paragraph tags > (eg para_red, para_blue) that would somehow magically set an associated > condition? > > Ben > > >

I'm not even sure I understand the description of the text inset behavior. :-} But maybe I can help with the side head setting issue. The Room for Side Heads check box is in the Customize Text Frame dialog box, but it's not actually a text frame property. It's a _flow_ property; notice in the dialog, it's part of the Flow settings on the lower right. Your main flow (body pages) is probably set to Flow Tag A. If you turn on Room for Side Heads for any frame with a given flow tag, it's on for _all_ frames with that flow tag (I'm not sure how FM behaves regarding frames with no flow tag). So take a look at the flow tags for a few of the problematic text frames. That might shed some light on what's happening. HTH! Richard Richard G. It's been years and years and years since I worked with Ventura, but IIRC, the .chp file doesn't contain anything but metadata and links. The text was entered (and edited) in a word processor or text editor. So you don't import the .chp file, you import the Word (or whatever) file(s) that the .chp references. At least, that's how I recall things working back when we had the kerosene-fired computers. ;-) Richard Richard G. I've been looking through my two reference books (Adobe's User Guide and Adobe's Classroom in a Book) and the online help, but I haven't been able to narrow it down further than they appear to be related to coping and/or renaming the files. condition-specific paragraph tags idea

Others have pointed out that such "magic" requires a script or plug-in. But unless you need to do this _a lot_, it's not worth the trouble. If you use keyboard shortcuts, you can tag a pgf with a condition just about as fast as you can apply a pgf tag to it. If you need to do this often enough to consider a script, I have to wonder why. Maybe there's another way to accomplish your purpose. In FM, that's often the case. :-) Richard Richard G. weird symbols in front of my Chapter Titles
Hi, Dierdre: The "T" characters before your chapter headings are markers that are created if you check "Create Hypertext Links" in the Table of Contents dialog box. These markers enable the ability to jump from a TOC entry to its source by clicking it in a PDF. In FM, you can use the combination Ctrl+Alt+Click on a TOC entry to jump to the source. Have you tried to copy an example of the condition to the clipboard with Edit > Copy Special, then Find a paragraph format and Replace by Pasting, with Replace All enabled? HTH Regards, Peter __ Peter Gold KnowHow ProServices
Sideheads that won't go away
If Richard's solution doesn't fix, try verifying your Master Page frames have Sideheads off as well (all of 'em) If that doesn't fix it, you might want to investigate your Text Inset files, though I doubt it's that deep. -Matt Sullivan GRAFIX Training, Inc. Sideheads that won't go away
Thanks for responding, Richard! Sorry about the rather circular description. It's definitely one of those 1 picture vs. 1000 words scenarios. You'd get it at a glance if you could see what I see. I thought about that, but the Flow Tag A is set to .5" sideheads, and the sideheads in these text frames inside the anchored frames are all 1.5"... wtc, over? Rene L. Thanks, Peter, an interesting idea to check out. My main motivation is to make conditions more "visible", to avoid later confusion/errors due to conditions being a "hidden" attribute. Ben
Sort order of entries in an index - Solved
OK, Steve solved it. The key was the length of the numeric strings that I wanted it sort on. I had to have the same number of digits in the [ ] for sorting, and I'd been inconsistent; some where three digits and some were four. My bad! So, my sort needed to be one of these: [0070 mm] [0090 mm] [0100 mm] [0200 mm] Or [070 mm] [090 mm] [100 mm] [200 mm] Then all sorts correctly. ~ Linda G. Can you provide some of the entries surrounding the areas in which you are having a problem? It seems to me that you are tyring to get these index entries into more than one location. Hi, Ben: >From your comment below, I'm not sure if you're aware of condition indicators. You can create them with text attributes like overline, underline, and strikethrough, plus a color - either one of the default FM colors, or a custom color you create. You can opt to show or hide these indicators; they print when they're visible. The indicators of hidden conditions are also hidden, but with View > Text Symbols ON, a marker (large "T" symbol) appears where content is hidden.
