SVN creates a huge db

2008-12-23 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I was doing my first real testing on SVN (TortoiseSVN) yesterday. I
have been issued a meager 8GB space on a server (Windows 2003 Server)
shared with another kind of database.

I had cleaned up a set of my largest manual consisting of a several
hundred files after deletion of all files except the main fm and book
files and a few graphic files, all in all 250MB of files. These I
uploaded to a new repository and imported it into the database where
it seemed to add a lot of files fast, until, ending on the
'db\transactions\4-1.txn\rev', which apparently froze. After more than
half an hour, suddenly the size sprang from some 5GB to more than 7GB
and left me with the message: 'There is not enough space on the disk.'

I have googled and searched some of the SVN related users lists and
have not seen any explanation to this. This seems too bloated to be
normal IMHO.

Can anyone on the list help me or explain this to me?

Thanks beforehand,

RE: SVN creates a huge db

2008-12-23 Thread Mike Feimster
Bodvar,

It appears that the transactions folder is like a staging folder. I
could see files it in while I was committing, but it was empty when the
commit was finished.

Just a swag, but you might want to create a repository on your local
drive and see if you can add the manual to that repository. Those folder
sizes seem big (my experience is that the files take up less disk space
in the repository than on your hard drive) but the transaction folder
might require a lot of space to work.

FM 8 upgrade woes: some solutions

2008-12-23 Thread Shell, Robert
Dear Emily:
my commiserations. My rig: Vista Professional with 4 gigs ram.

I converted to FM 8 after Vista upgrade and had quite a few of the problems
you mention. It took me a week to sort out. I too missed my Xmas market. I
too was misled by a page number, but there was nothing wrong with the page,
although the error message was consistent.

Some lessons I learnt

1. Never convert to a new version of anything under deadline.

2. Never test any Adobe product with Save as .pdf. Save as .pdf seems to
work only with a single file. Always go for the postscript route. Goodness
knows why Adobe called their printer pdf converter instead of postscript
converter, however, I was again taken in. This particular problem goes back
to the days of PageMaker. I regard Adobe as a top of the line corporation
and I am sure they will sort it out, but when? I would love to know how
many person hours are lost globally on this wonderful program's output
stage, but I digress

2. The FM 8 trial came with a partial distiller which seem to hang around
even after the trial was removed.

3. There are three major FM 8 patches which have to be installed. The last
one was difficult and had to be done twice. Go to the update window and keep
on updating until all is updated.

4. After the three patch update (which cleaned out my ADSL monthly account),
I inserted the FM8 CD and did a repair ; sounds like voodoo, but that was
the thing that worked. The page problem disappeared.

p.s. If you have Vista and a spare flashdrive, make use of Vista's
superfetch procedure: uses the flashdrive as extra memory. Works fine with
FM8 and distiller.

Re: Identifying overrides in FrameMaker

2008-12-23 Thread Joseph
Hi Nancy,

If you want to replace one paragraph tag with another, do the following:

   1. Use the Copy Special Paragraph Format to copy the new paragraph to
   your clipboard.
   2. Open the find and replace dialog box.
   3. In the Find drop-down menu, select Paragraph tag.
   4. In the Find field, type the name of the old paragraph tag.
   5. In the Paste drop-down menu, select paste by (this means that whatever
is in your clipboard will be pasted in place of the old paragraph tag, in
this case cause you copied the new paragraph format to your clipboard, the
   new paragraph will replace it.
   6. DO NOT do a an All change.
   7. Make one change to verify that it is working.
   8. THEN do an All change.

That should convert all your old paragraph tags in your book to the new
ones.

RE: Checkboxes in numbered lists

2008-12-23 Thread Eaton, Doug
Because my page layout contains a sidehead margin, and to provide
maximum flexibility for those assigning checkboxes to the numbered steps
(regardless of the level--1, a, or i--with which the checkbox aligns), I
created an anchored frame with a small square (drawn with Frame tools)
in it on a reference page. If you know of an unpleasant consequence of
using this approach, please let me know.

Here are the specs (measurements in inches) if you want to try it out:

Anchoring Position: Left

Side: Left

Distance Above Baseline: -0.047

Distance from text frame: 0.1

W: 0.196

H 0.175

Once a procedure is written, the writer copies this anchored frame once
and pastes it in at every desired step, which is not a big
responsibility in the document set for which I'm designing this
solution. The training designer who will use it has tried it out
and--though he'd prefer something more automated--found this easy to
use.

Thanks to all reached out to help me solve this one. Wishing you all
health and job security in 2009!

Index entry: highlighted page number out of sequence

2008-12-23 Thread Klaus Daube
You can higlight the page number of a particular index entry ba ending
it with a character format. However, in FM8 the page numbers will no
more be in sequece:

Define a character format bold to see the effect in the index.
On page 1
Enter a single level and a double level index marker, e.g. bobbemaise
and tales:bobbemaise
On page 2 enter the same index markers, but with ending charcter format
bobbemaisebold and tales:bobbemaisebold
On page 3 enter the same index markers as on page 1.

In FM 7 and 6 you get this index:
bobbemaise 1, 2, 3 with highlighted 2
tales
   bobbemaise 1, 2, 3 with highlighted 2

In FM8 you get this index:
bobbemaise 1, 3, 2 with highlighted 2
tales
   bobbemaise 1, 3, 2 with highlighted 2

Is this a bug in FM8 or a hidden feature?

That's a difficult question... ;-)

Either way, to get the page numbers sorted properly: add a space before the
character tag in the index entry.
For example: bobbemaise bold and tales:bobbemaise bold

Re: FM 8 upgrade woes: some solutions

2008-12-23 Thread Emily Berk
Thank you for the suggestions, Robert. Thing is, I did not decide
to convert to FM 8 because FM 8 does not actually export files that I
was able to read using FM 7. I was forced to use the trial version
of FM 8 when my colleague was unable to gen his FM 8 doc on the date due.

I understand that he was been able to do it up until the
weekend. His book file must have gotten trashed within the last week
or so. In other words, the timing simply sucked.

I guess I'll go patch my FM trial, but I don't think the problem is
only with the trial version because this problem originated on the
full-fledged version. (Guess my colleague might want to check into
upgrades too, huh?)

For my work, for now, I'm sticking with FM 7, which also has its
problems, but is running on my XP machine and crashes MUCH less frequently.

I'll second that... 8 is much more stable and doesn't leak memory
nearly as badly.

If you have enough RAM -- 1-2 G, 8 is patched, and the files aren't
funky 8 is the way to go.
And I've been back saving them to 7.1 and 7.2 since 8 came out; no problems.

Frame 8 trial woes

2008-12-23 Thread Alan Litchfield
Timing :(

First thing I would look for is a corrupt/badly formed graphic file.
If you have any graphics in any specific chapter files, that is.

So what I'd do:
1, Try to print each chapter to ps (not direct to pdf) then manually
distill them using Acrobat and see which one(s) fail.
2, When it/they fail in Acrobat you will see which pages successfully
completed. The offending graphic(s) will be on the next page
somewhere. You will also get an error log generated, although
sometimes the messages can be somewhat cryptic unless you know what
you are reading.
3, Remove the suspect(s) and repeat steps 1 and 2 until the file(s)
complete successfully.
4, Replace or repair the graphics files accordingly.

On the other hand, if the FM 8 files are operating without incident on
the source machine and the problem only surfaces on your machine, or
files that have been exported for use on your machine, then are they
using any plug ins that you do not have?

Can anyone on the list help me or explain this to me?

Bodvar,

It appears that the transactions folder is like a staging folder. I
could see files it in while I was committing, but it was empty when the
commit was finished.

Just a swag, but you might want to create a repository on your local
drive and see if you can add the manual to that repository. Those folder
sizes seem big (my experience is that the files take up less disk space
in the repository than on your hard drive) but the transaction folder
might require a lot of space to work.

and I am sure they will sort it out, but when? I would love to know how
many person hours are lost globally on this wonderful program's output
stage, but I digress

2. The FM 8 trial came with a partial distiller which seem to hang around
even after the trial was removed.

3. There are three major FM 8 patches which have to be installed. The last
one was difficult and had to be done twice. Go to the update window and keep
on updating until all is updated.

4. After the three patch update (which cleaned out my ADSL monthly account),
I inserted the FM8 CD and did a "repair" ; sounds like voodoo, but that was
the thing that worked. The page problem disappeared.

p.s. If you have Vista and a spare flashdrive, make use of Vista's
superfetch procedure: uses the flashdrive as extra memory. Works fine with
FM8 and distiller.

Checkboxes in numbered lists

FM 8 upgrade woes: some solutions

2008-12-23 Thread Emily Berk
Thank you for the suggestions, Robert. Thing is, I did not "decide"
to convert to FM 8 because FM 8 does not actually export files that I
was able to read using FM 7.

FM 8 upgrade woes: some solutions

2008-12-23 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net
Sorry to hear about the problems you have had, but ... I guess everyone
has their own particular experiences that will differ.

On both my older XP system, and now my rebuilt Vista system, FM 8
crashes FAR less frequently than FM 7 (any of the 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2
versions).

I find it to be much more stable and consistent and am glad I upgraded.

FM 8 upgrade woes: some solutions

2008-12-23 Thread Art Campbell
I'll second that... 8 is much more stable and doesn't leak memory
nearly as badly.

If you have enough RAM -- 1-2 G, 8 is patched, and the files aren't
funky 8 is the way to go.
And I've been back saving them to 7.1 and 7.2 since 8 came out; no problems.

Combined Fonts in FM8

2008-12-23 Thread Hayward, Morgan (Bolton)
Hi Framers,

I'm trying to edit the combined fonts in my template, but when I go to
Customize Layout, I don't see an option for Combined Fonts. Can anyone
tell me how to make this option available, please?

Regards,

autonumbering in book

2008-12-23 Thread Debbie
I'm a bit rusty with my FM skills, and having trouble with a very simple issue.

How do I make sure that my figure and table numbers run all the way through a
multiple chapter book, rather than restarting in each section?

Please respond directly; I don't get the digest.

Thanks in advance. I have used this list in the past and always found my
answers!
