RE: FM9 - Format Change List and Paragraph Tags

2009-04-02 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Lynne,

This makes sense inside a element definition, would you say it also works
that way between elements? Currently I have my elements in alphabetical
order in the EDD, to make it easier to find the elements that need editing.
The format change lists themselves are at the end of the EDD however. In
other appliations I worked with grouped elements (like in the DITA app) -
but I never encountered this problem before - or may be just didn't notice
it.

I'll rearrange my EDD and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks,

Kind regards, vriendelijke groet,

RE: Bullets in multiple columns

2009-04-02 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi Steve,

You could also create an anchored frame with the width of
your text frame and insert a new text frame. Then change the
text frame's properties to 2 or more columns and activate
Balance Columns.

You still have to adjust the height of the 2 frames
manually, but you do not need to distribute the content
manually between the 2 columns of a table. You also do
not need to change your table column format or create
a new one.

However, I would recomment to use a dedicated empty anchor
paragraph for the anchored frame. Deselect Line Spacing - Fixed
of this paragraph format. Select the anchored frame and press
ESC m p to adjust its size to that of the text frame.

Best regards

Winfried

FrameMaker Footnotes

2009-04-02 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I have a table with multiple footnotes, with one original footnote and
several cross-references to that footnote.

The problem is that the original footnote is larger than the cross
references to the footnote, even though the character style appears to
be the same (superscript).

In another book this problem does not occur.

Any ideas why this is happening or how to fix it? Also, how to you
adjust the size of the (superscript) number that refers to a table footnote?

The text is already in a two column flow and the bulleted lists will never be

I, too, think a borderless table is the way to go, especially if this
need is one-time or quite infrequent.

Yes, there are manual adjustments to make when the bullet list changes.
One decision you need to consider is whether to put one bullet item per
cell (many rows) or use a one-row table (however many columns you want
across) with many bullets per cell. The latter won't span pages, of
 course, but requires less fiddling.

Alan's idea of using multiple columns has a great deal of merit if this
will be a quite long section, or if the need is frequent. But it really
requires setting up a template with this in mind -- changing all your
everyday tags (body, headings, numbered lists, ordinary bullets,
etc., etc.) to span columns, and creating special tags for multi-column
 use.

I've never done more than a short (less than half-page) multi-column
list like this, and that only rarely, so the table solution was far
quicker and simpler for me. YMMV, of course.

Display bug in FrameMaker 7.2

2009-04-02 Thread Maries, Anthony
Hi Framers,

I wonder whether anybody else has experienced this bug in FrameMaker 7.2 or
on any other FrameMaker release.

If you have two documents open in the same window, when you select the
second from the Window menu the first is minimised and the second is
displayed occupying the full window.

When you switch back to the first, the normal behaviour is for the second
window to be minimised and for the first to re-open, but only occupy about
half the window.

In the last couple of days the first window opens in part of the window, but
the second document still displays in the window. The second document
display is not actually active, and can be suppressed by making a change in
the window properties e.g. by maximising the window and then restoring to
the original size.

The incidence of this bug is not predictable, i.e. you can have a FrameMaker
session and it does not occur, then it may return at the next session.
However once it does occur it is persistent and the only way to restore
FrameMaker to normal behaviour is to close both documents and the window,
and to re-open them in a new FrameMaker session.

We have had a Windows update on the company system in the last couple of
days, installed by the company IT department and thus out of our control. It
is possible that this problem may be caused by changes in Windows having an
unpredictable effect on an old and no longer maintained version of
FrameMaker.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Tony Maries

FrameScript - assign value to a FM variable

2009-04-02 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

I have 2 variables in FM 8 that I want to assign values to:

(1) Product: assign CAR in default font
(2) ProductBold: assign DOLL with char format BoldOnly

I use the Get command to get the varfmt I want and give the Set commands:

Set vMyVariable1.fmt = 'BoldOnlyDOLL';

Set vMyVariable2.fmt = 'Default FontCAR';

The first command works, the second does
not...there is a weird character between the
words Default and Font and I do not kow how to get that in the command...

I have tried:
- to copy paste the content from the FM dialog
box to define a variable's value but that does not work
- writing \p or \P or \r bewteen Default and Font
and I do get characters but seemingly not the good one...

This has to work today...

Any ideas...

Many thx!

RE: FM9 - Format Change List and Paragraph Tags

2009-04-02 Thread Les Smalley
Wim -

the order of the element and format change lists in the EDD is not a factor.
What is important is the order of format rules within a given element's
definition.

As Lynne stated, you have to be sure that any rule that applies a format change
(i.e., applies a character format to override the default para font) occurs
after a rule that applies a paragraph format.

Also, be careful with nested rules - it may be that a change is not being
applied when you think due to it being nested inside another rule that is not
utilized.  Or possibly it is being replaced by a later rule that reset the
paragraph tag.

FM 9 Desired Feature - Variables to Return to Match Entry First Letter Functionality

2009-04-02 Thread Pinkham, Jim
This may have been mentioned before, but I think it bears repeating.
It's been very useful in Frame to type CTRL+0 to get to the variable
list and then to type the first lettter of the named variable and cycle
through until the desired entry appears for selection.

What FM 9 does is bring up the first alphabetically corresponding
variable and then present a drop-down.

For example, if I choose M, I get Modification Date. In the past, I
could then type M a couple of times more and wend my way through the
various variables until Machine Name popped up. Now, instead, I have to
go hunt for Machine Name in the drop-down list.

It's a small thing, but an efficiency. A return to the old behavior, in
this case, would be appreciated.

But I do have to correct one small detail in Richard's message: the alias for

I'm not following you. What you call normal behaviour isn't anything
I've ever seen. Maybe there's a terminology problem, so let me try to
describe what I think is normal (I'm using FM 7.2 in Win XP).

FM has a multiple document interface (MDI). Within the application
parent window, you can open any number of documents (including books),
each in its own window.

Using the buttons at the right end of each document window's title bar,
you can:

-- Minimize the document window, reducing it to a small title bar at the
bottom of the application window.

-- Maximize the document window, filling the application window
completely so that the document no longer has its own window frame,
title bar, scroll bars, etc. -- it gets these from the parent
application window. It still has its own Minimize, Restore, and Close
buttons right below the application window's.

-- Restore the document window to the normal state (there may be a
more formal name for this, but I don't recall), making it the size it
was before being minimized or maximized.

Whether a window is visible has nothing to do with whether it's
minimized, normal, or maximized. It can be either visible or hidden in
any of the three states.

Open a book with several chapter files in it. Then hold the Shift key
and select File Open All Files in Book. FM opens them all minimized,
their mini title bars neatly stacked at the bottom of the application
window. Press Ctrl-Tab repeatedly to cycle through all the open docs,
and you'll see that one after the other, the minimized windows get focus
(their title bars undim). But they remain minimized.

Click Restore on one of the minimized windows and it returns to the
normal state and gets focus (becomes the active window). The others
remain minimized. Restore one or two more. Then move/resize the restored
windows if necessary so you can see at least portions of all of them and
still see some of the minimized ones. Cycle through them all with
Ctrl-Tab again, and you'll see that shifting focus from a normal window
to a minimized and back doesn't change their size/state, it only changes
which is active (and if the windows overlap, the active one is always
at the top of the stack).

But Maximize works differently. Click a minimized window's Maximize
button. It fills the application window as described above. Now cycle
through the open windows with Ctrl-Tab. You'll see that _all_ of them
are now maximized. Maximizing any document or book window maximizes them
all (of course, you can only see the top one, which is active).
Selecting them from the Window menu doesn't change this behavior.
They're all maximized, you're just changing which one is in front and
thus has focus.

Now click the document's Restore button (below the application Restore
button in the FM title bar). All the windows resume their previous
state/size -- normal or minimized. If you Ctrl-Tab a time or two, you'll
see the focus move to the next window in the tab order, and it will be
normal or minimized.

But here's where it gets a little odd. From the Windows menu, select one
of the docs that briefly had focus in the previous step. It gets focus,
but retains its normal or minimized state. Now from the Windows menu,
select a document _other_ than the one(s) that had focus in the previous
step. It gets focus _and_ is _maximized_!

So even though a doc appears to be in normal or minimized state (after
you restore a different maximized doc), some internal flag for window
state doesn't get flipped until you explicitly flip it with the Restore
button, click on or in it, or Ctrl-Tab to it.

I don't think any of this behavior is new and only the sticky window
state switch strikes me as unusual. Are you seeing something that
doesn't match the above behaviors?

We check them out of source control and build them automagically, but as
you can see from the noise below a book I just created from scratch on my

Earlier I had an error on pg 18. I saved the book as MIF (exported

So, it looks like the bad behavior has moved to p 3, which is kind of a

Is it possible that you are using the initial release of FM8.0? The

Check whether you can update FM8 (applying available patches).

If not, as a workaround: turn Tagged PDF on (without selecting specific

[note: I don't generally recommend producing Tagged PDFs from FrameMaker]

Bullets in multiple columns

2009-04-02 Thread Alan Litchfield
Hi Steve,

Have you looked at creating multiple columns and then for the "heading" and
"text that explains", define those as crossing-over all columns?

Done similar before, but it depends on how much is two column, one column,
etc. And if it is a lengthy section within an otherwise standard document, put
that into a separate file to simplify the administration of styles.

Sorry, working on the Mac at the moment and don't have FM available to me.

Cheers
Alan

Bullets in multiple columns

2009-04-02 Thread Alan Litchfield
Also, if your table spreads across pages it will not necessarily sort
correctly if the split moves up or down.

Controlling line spacing between table and paragraph is made more difficult
when using tables (you have more metrics to deal with than with simple
paragraph line-spacing).

More than lipstick on a pig

2009-04-02 Thread Hedley Finger

Well, I installed the trial of FM9 beside FM8. 'Course double-clicking
a *.fm file launches FM9 but soon fixed that. Like the PODs for viewing
various useful things. Also ability to turn non-modal dialogues into
floating/tiled palettes. Support for DITA 1.1 double-plus good. Funky
grey styling to match other Adobe products: keeps marketing people off
the streets, don't it.

Now that you can see a list of all markers, perhaps Index markers can
also be toggled with a sorted display of all index entries in the book,
with editing of Level1IX headings automatically modifying all the
relevant markers, and other good indexing aids. P.S. Do IXgen, emDex,
GenDex, Index Tools Pro, etc. work with FM9? (Hey, Adobe, doesn't the
existence of all these indexing plug-ins, which each address only PART
of the indexing functionality required, tell you where your next
development efforts should be directed? Take a look at Cindex, Sky
Index, and Macrex to get a bit of a hint. Oh, and MultiTes too for
vocabulary control of team indexing. Even InDesign indexing interface
is better in some respects. -- Disillusioned in Melbourne)

It is not possible to control PDF security settings directly from FrameMaker.

You can, however, specify security settings in Distiller, that will apply
to *all* PDFs distilled (whether you use Save as PDF from FrameMaker, or
print to PS and distill).

In Distiller, choose Settings > Security.
The options you see vary depending on the Acrobat version compatibility set
in in current Distiller settings.

FM9 - Format Change List and Paragraph Tags

2009-04-02 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Lynne,

This makes sense inside a element definition, would you say it also works
that way between elements? Currently I have my elements in alphabetical
order in the EDD, to make it easier to find the elements that need editing.
The format change lists themselves are at the end of the EDD however. In
other appliations I worked with grouped elements (like in the DITA app) -
but I never encountered this problem before - or may be just didn't notice
it.

I'll rearrange my EDD and see if it makes any difference.

Bullets in multiple columns

2009-04-02 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi Steve,

You could also create an anchored frame with the width of
your text frame and insert a new text frame. Then change the
text frame's properties to 2 or more columns and activate
"Balance Columns".

FrameScript - assign value to a FM variable

2009-04-02 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

I have 2 variables in FM 8 that I want to assign values to:

(1) Product: assign CAR in default font
(2) ProductBold: assign DOLL with char format BoldOnly

I use the Get command to get the varfmt I want and give the Set commands:

Set vMyVariable1.fmt = 'DOLL';

Set vMyVariable2.fmt = 'CAR';

FM9 - Format Change List and Paragraph Tags

2009-04-02 Thread Les Smalley
Wim -

the order of the element and format change lists in the EDD is not a factor.?
What is important is the order of format rules within a given element's
definition.?

As Lynne stated, you have to be sure that any rule that applies a format change
(i.e., applies a character format to override the default para font) occurs
after a rule that applies a paragraph format.??

Also, be careful with nested rules - it may be that a change is not being
applied when you think due to it being nested inside another rule that is not
utilized.? Or possibly it is being replaced by a later rule that reset the
paragraph tag.

You don't need to. Unless you specify a char format, the variable
automatically assumes the default pgf font. The only time you need to
explicitly assign is to turn off a previously invoked
char format, as in a variable definition like this:

DOLLCAR

And in that case, I'd try the alias that works in
dialog boxes: <\>

Richard is absolutely correct about not needing to include the Default ? Font
switch in a variable definition. In fact, it can be undesirable if you need to
insert the variable into a string that has some character format applied to it
because the variable will appear in the paragraph's base font format rather
than the applied character format.

But I do have to correct one small detail in Richard's message: the alias for
the Default ? Font switch in a variable definition uses a forward slash rather
than a backslash.

D'oh! Of course it does. The backslash is the escape character. Dumb mistake.

Thanks, Fred!

Bullets in multiple columns

2009-04-02 Thread Suhas Murthy
Hi,

I am looking forward to take the ACE exam in Framemaker 8.0. Can we
download training materials and resources required to prepare for the ACE
exam from Adobe.com? I did search for books and training materials from
the following links below:
http://www.adobe.com/misc/training.html
http://www.adobe.com/support/certification/ace_certify.html

However, I didn't find any training resources or materials/books. I need
your help in finding resources and materials so that I can start preparing
for the ACE exam.
It will be of great help if anyone can share their experience and guide me
for the ACE exam.

Great Webinar by Shlomo Perets of Microtype.com

2009-04-02 Thread Callie Bertsche
* NOT a vendor post, just a very satisfied attendee! :) *

Hi Framers,
I just attended Shlomo Peret's webinar on the top ten FrameMaker tips
and tricks, and it was amazingly practical, useful, and easy to follow!
Schlomo, I want to thank you again for a great webinar: I'm going to put
into practice, literally today, at least three of the tips I learned
from the webinar. And the rest will increase my productivity measurably
in days to come. Definitely the best webinar I have ever "attended".
Thanks again!
