The instability that I have experienced is that occasionally the Enhance window will not launch or it dies. As the content is stored in the FM document, no harm is done. The ASCII/ISO Latin/Unicode conversions are probably a problem as you suggest, but there are many examples of the same characters that were not converted. Curiously, when these characters are part of an xref format or variable, they are also corrupted in the same way, suggesting that it is an FM8 problem, as you cannot monkey with variables and xrefs from within Enhance. Adobe support spotted the post and wrote suggesting I check my SmartQuotes settings in maker.ini. I have set the required quote characters to SmartQuotes=‘’“” instead of using the \x? notation. Let's see if that works. Very sporadic so results might be weeks or months. Sporadically, any phrase enclosed in ?single quotes? becomes ???single quotes??? in my FrameMaker 8.0p277 files (Windows XP SP3). The en rule becomes ??? and other similar character substitutions also occur. I am drafting chapters in Enhance for FrameMaker as it approximates Word's Normal pages for scrolling through unpaged text, but Enhance has worked well in many other projects without this phenomenon occurring. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it? Chomp2: a tool for chunking XML files
Chomp2: a tool for chunking XML files Several years ago (at the STC 50th conference) I demonstrated a round-trip XML project, with topic-level XML files inserted in a FrameMaker document using insets. In the demo I used Chomp, an xml chunking tool my husband created for me. Since then, he's added a few features so I can use it for my DITA projects. It's handy if you are using the FrameMaker DITA EDD for structured writing, say, at the chapter level, and later you want to convert to XML and break up your chapter into topic level files for mapping. Also handy if you're converting a chapter-length unstructured document to structured, then want to chunk down to topic-level files. You can use Chomp2 for free for two weeks, if you find it useful, it's yours for ten bucks. Hi Joseph, Recommended resources for the FM ACE exam: - Review every thing in the Adobe FrameMaker user guide. Make sure you understand everything in it. - Carefully review the Product Proficiency Exam Bulletin for FrameMaker, There will be a question on your exam on every topic listed. http://partners.adobe.com/public/en/ace/ACE_Exam_Guide_FrameMaker8.pdf You said: ?I have been using FrameMaker for over a year now and I am an expert level? It is a pretty difficult to be an expert at FrameMaker after one year. It usually takes several years of template-design experience, and weird problems solved in strange trenches to become an expert. But hey, why not go for it. You will learn a lot in the process. By the way, I don't think the exam for FrameMaker 9 is out yet. Good luck! Adding a shadow to text in Framemaker 7.1
Hi, Thanks for everyone's advice - it was all very much appreciated. In the end I decided to follow Jona's advice, and added a background text frame in the master pages containing the chapter number with the chapter number variable formatted to 20% grey. I've had to tweak the EDD a little also, but this appears to be the least labour-intensive method. Thank you again! THen shift this text frame down and to the left or right a step or two. That would approximate a shadow effect. I don't have FM open now, so maybe it'll look like total crap, but it might be worth a shot, and would be easier than creating custom graphics for lots of chapter numbers. HTH. Arbortext versus FrameMaker Compared
To answer an earlier post about Arbortext and FrameMaker. We support and know both worlds very well. The Arbortext Editor is found in most of the regulated industries, pharmaceuticals, aerospace (Airbus), telecoms, automotive (Caterpillar) and defense. Arbortext is true SGML/XML, but tends to be more complex to setup. Example, to generate a .pdf book is a major task. FrameMaker .pdf is far easier to use. There is a scripting language called ACL which uses Java or .COM. By comparison, FrameMaker has the FDK and FrameScript. Like FrameMaker, Arbortext does not support Hebrew, Thai or Arabic. If you need good Arabic publishing, InDesign Middle East edition is the only tool. You will see the two products come closer when DITA becomes the standard. They are both excellent products, but for ease of use, FrameMaker is the winner.
