SVGs with Frame/DITA

2009-08-18 Thread Mollye Barrett
Hi All,

I'm working on a DITA/Frame project right now and am faced with a graphics
challenge go figure. The client currently uses EPS illustrations with
callouts and leader lines applied to the drawing in the Frame graphics box.
Most are simple lettered callouts but there are also some illustrations with
text that must be translated into 24 languages. So, sounds to me like a good
application for SVGs.

Can anyone speak to using SVGs with DITA and Frame?

As always, your help is appreciated!

Problem with list?

2009-08-18 Thread Combs, Richard
Is there a problem with the Mailman software? I haven't received a
message from the list since last Thursday. I just checked the archives
(so the server is up), and the last message there is from Thursday, too.

Diagonal line in a header cell

2009-08-18 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

I have a table with titles in the header area and
also in the left column (let's say the headers
are stats and the lines are cities), and would
like the header cell in the upper left corner to
have a diagonal line from top left to bottom
right where I could type Stats above the diagonal
and Cities below as titles for the 2 sets of headers.

This seems a common presentation style to me. I
can't figure out how to make a good clean
diagonal that really goes from cell corner to
cell corner simply - or do I have to insert an anchored frame, etc.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks everyone and have a good day.

FrameMaker TOC Problem - resolved

2009-08-18 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
It seems that the problem with the page numbering in the TOC was that
one paragraph was shifting to the next page when I updated the TOC, but
it was not shifting to the next page in the PDF. I haven't quite figured
out how that could have happened, but I solved the problem for now buy
reducing some of the spacing to make sure that the paragraph does not
shift to the next page.

I still haven't resolved the second issue, but I'm not that concerned
about that problem since I can just reinsert the LOF.

I'm having two problems with a TOC (using Frame 9 p237).

1. The page numbers for a lot of the TOC entries are wrong. When I click
on the links they go to the right pages, but not the pages listed in the
TOC. It starts in the middle of one of the chapters - the page numbers
in the TOC is one page later than the actual page. This is really weird.
I haven't seen this type of problem yet in Frame. I don't see any
problem in the file at the point where the problem starts. Could the
file be corrupt?

2. I inserted a LOF as a text inset at the end of the TOC. When I update
the book, the LOF jumps to the front of the TOC and instead tern into
plain text instead of a text inset.

Any ideas?

Variables established at book level?

2009-08-18 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, everyone.

Is there a way to establish variables in the first file in your book file and
have them carry through all the remaining files?

The appeal is, I establish book title, part number, and rev date variables on
the cover page of my book; I then use those variables in the headers and
footers of all the following chapters. It would be great to only have to set
them up once, without even using the Import Formats function, through which I
have come to grief more than once.

Is there a way to change the variables in the Cover file (the first file in my
book.fm) and have them carry over into all the remaining book files, without
having to do anything more?

I know about the plug-in, BookVars, but  I think someone mentioned a built-in
capability in Frame along those lines.

Or did I dream that?

Thanks.

SetPrint plug-in FM 9 within the TCS 2.0

2009-08-18 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Hello Fellow Framers,

I thought Ian's instructions over at
http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm were pretty
straightforward, but when I tried to follow them, my copy of FM9 (with
the TCS 2.0) isn't setting the default to Adobe PDF as it should.

I downloaded the SetPrint.dll into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe
Technical Communication Suite 2\Adobe FrameMaker 9\plugins, and created
a SetPrint.ini with the Printer=Adobe PDF line, but nothing seems to
have happened when I restart FM - my default printer inside FM is still
my network HP printer.

Anybody have any experience with SetPrint in FM 9? Does having the TCS
make any difference?

Automatic Output Generation of FrameMaker Documents

2009-08-18 Thread Fei Min Lorente
We're in the final (hopefully) stages of setting up our FrameMaker
documentation set of manuals to generate PDF and HTML files as part of a
nightly build, and the programmers are somewhat surprised at how
difficult this has been. We have FrameMaker 7.2 running on Windows XP.
We're using Mif2Go to create the output files, and the scripting
language is Python. Just out of curiosity, who else out there is
automatically generating their output, and what tools are you using?

ANN: New layer capabilities with Presentation Asst v3 (TimeSavers add-on)

2009-08-18 Thread Shlomo Perets
The Layer Assistant was recently integrated into the Presentation Assistant
(v.3), offering the following capabilities:

-- Text/Symbol Layer shortcuts
Add the specified string, associated with a layer (with control over font,
size and color; horizontal/vertical location adjustment)

-- Shape Layer shortcuts
(rectangle, rounded rectangle, shaded rectangle and circle; can control
fill/border color, line width)
* optionally also create a link that toggles layer visibility
* optionally specify that the shape border is visible at all times,
regardless of the layer and its visibility

-- Image Layer shortcuts
Include JPEG images as a layer
(this may also be used to set a non-printing page background tint to reduce
screen glare, or for navigation buttons)

-- Underline/Strikethrough Layer shortcuts

-- Layers can be created from FM content (text / graphics) based on RGB
color composition
(this does not require hypertext markers)

-- Layer visibility links/bookmarks:
(show layer; hide layer, show layer only, toggle layer, show next/previous
layer, show all layers, hide all layers)

-- Specific layers can be set as initially hidden or as non-printing
(through the settings files or through shortcuts)

-- Support for transparency of shapes and JPEG images

Visit http://www.microtype.com/showcasePresentAsst.html for PDFs
demonstrating the new capabilities

View Only

2009-08-18 Thread Judy Bragg
I'm using FM8 to build PDF documents
Yesterday, I spent quite a while building a flowchart.  Each step is a hotspot
that takes them to the relavant topic in the manual.  I got it done just in
time to insert it to the manual, PDF it and send it to tech. support.
Today, I'd like to take that flowchart and modify it for a similar program.  My
problem is that, for some reason, it acts like a view only document.  I can
select the text box from the master page and I can select the graphic frame in
which I drew the flowchart, but I can't select the component parts of the
flowchart itself.  I've tried both methods of toggling the View Only property
and the button in the Hypertext dialog changes back and forth.  Unfortunately,
when (according to the status of the button) the document should be editable, I
still can't edit my flow chart.
Does anyone out there have any ideas what else I could try?
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and help!

Tint Colors in Frame 9.0

2009-08-18 Thread Scott White
I have a client who is using the new Framemaker 9.0 on her windows xp
machine. She is trying to output a 30% spot color plus her black for
the printer.
No matter whether we print to postscript or create a pdf directly, the
color always comes out at 100 percent. We even tried building a new
color as a tint and even that came out as 100%.
The only way we could get it to work is by actually distilling to
separations and the color came out correct. However the printer wants
composite pdfs and of course we are back to square one there.
Does anyone know if this is a bug, is there an update or plugin we
need? Has anyone else encountered this?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Also, I sent this out earlier but seems the frame list was down.

Thanks.

Re: SetPrint plug-in FM 9 within the TCS 2.0

2009-08-18 Thread Art Campbell
Two points...

The directions actually say to create a SetPrint directory _under_
\Plugins, which I don't think you did. (then copy SetPrint.dll to a
new directory named C:\Program
Files\Adobe\FrameMaker6.0\fminit\Plugins\SetPrint)

And the web page does point out that it was only tested with FM 6 and
7 although I haven't seen any reports of problems with later
versions. I'd expect it to work.

TCS shouldn't have any effect at all -- it's a FM plug-in.

RE: Can we change the track text edit marker colours in FM8?

Short Answer:
No.
Longer answer with mini rant:
It is just a conditional format except we can't adjust its properties.
(although, I have had some success saving it down to 7.2 and adjusting
it there).
It is a particular pet peeve of mine. People are used to seeing added
text in red - and the green just throws them off (I got a lot of calls
when we switched to FM8). That is why people often call track
changes/track text edits Red-line/strikeout. I also don't believe Adobe
realized that people are red/green color-blind when choosing the colors.
One of our engineers has an especially difficult time because of this.
If we get lucky, they will fix it in 10.

Text inset (FM9)

2009-08-18 Thread Milton, Cynthia

Classification: NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED

I don't know if this is a bug but I can't find anything about it
anywhere else.

I have a number of docs with text insets. When I do an update, an extra
carriage return is added at the end of the inset which duplicates the
paratag of the first line of the inset. The first paratag is a section
head with a page break, so this also is duplicated. The result is an
extra empty page which cannot be deleted as FM reckons it's part of the
inset.

The only way to correct it is to delete the inset and re-import it,
which rather defeats the object. G.

Anyone know anything (please, please, gibber gibber)?

Re: Text inset (FM9)

2009-08-18 Thread Jerilynne Knight
Hi Cynthia

I don't know if this will help or not...I ran into something many years ago,
only it was an autonumbered paragraph not a page break. After much futzing,
fiddling and testing, I came up with something that works.

   1. Make sure the end-of-file marker is immediately after the last
   character in the text inset
   2. Position your cursor where the text inset is to be inserted in the
container document (no duh, eh? Smile)
   3. Insert a fixed width space, such as an em space (Esc Space m)
   4. Press Home to position the cursor at the beginning of the line
   5. Import text inset

I also use a specific paragraph tag to anchor text insets...and I don't
believe anchoring to any old paragraph tag will make a difference.

RE: log out, logout or log off logoff

2009-08-18 Thread Jon Harvey

My team had issues with this a long time ago until we considered the
gerund and past tense forms of the term:

logout--logouting; log out--logging out.

Logout--logouted; log out--logged out.

As a result, the terms log out and log in made more sense.

This comes up every few months on the list. There is no extra carriage
return being added. When you import a text inset, you're importing it
_at the cursor location_. More than likely, that's in an empty body pgf.
A text inset always sits in a pgf -- it has to, it's just another text
object, like a char, xref, or marker. You can confirm this to yourself
by putting the text cursor somewhere above the text inset and pressing
the right arrow key repeatedly until the cursor moves past the text
inset. Notice that a single keypress moves the cursor from before the
text inset to after it -- to FM, it's just an object in the text flow,
like a marker.

The problem you're experiencing is the result of a long-standing bug.
When a text inset sits at the end of the pgf that contains it, the
container pgf takes on the format of the first pgf in the text inset.
This is analogous to the related bug regarding char formats: when a char
format extends all the way to the end of the pgf, it creates a pgf
override.

The solution in both cases is don't do that. If you import text insets
into empty pgfs, always put something between the text inset and the end
of the pgf that contains it (I use a non-breaking space so there's a
visible symbol, but anything will do). By all means, work with text
symbols displayed so you can see the pilcrow at the end of a pgf, etc.

Using Presentation Assistant (FM-to-Acrobat TimeSavers add-on),

All items are inserted/controlled through hypertext markers. For text items

RE: Variables established at book level?

2009-08-18 Thread Owen, Clint
Nancy,

You can do it with cross references, but that can have it's own set of
problems.

You need to use each variable at least once in your title chapter. Each
one has to be in a paragraph by itself, possibly be on an unused master
page. Then create a cross reference marker in the paragraph that
contains each variable. Then cross reference from anywhere in your book
back to the markers in your title chapter. Once it is set up, you can
change every cross referenced copy at the same time by updating the
variables in the title chapter.

this happened when you dragged the frame on the master page, if, while
you held Ctrl to change the text pointer to the graphic pointer in

eligible for the academic version pricing. So I'm looking at $1900 to
buy

but
still, that's pricey.

Does anyone know of a less expensive place to buy the Suite?

Rick,
On your first email, I opened a graphic and made some edits. I did not
change the graphic filename. Then open the corresponding Frame file without
any problems.

I renamed the graphic file and reopened the Frame book. When it ran into the
missing graphic, I selected Ignore and it just ignored that graphic and
opened the file. I closed the Frame file and tried it again and selected
Skip and got the same response.

This tends to tell me that something in Frame has gotten corrupted. You
might try reinstalling, at least the latest patch (p277) and then try
opening the file. If this doesn't fix it, then I would re0install Frame8 and
then, of course, all updates.

you select to skip this file, the next time you open that particular
Frame file, it will again ask for the correct graphic file location,
even if you have saved the file.

Check the path and filename of the referenced graphic files. The
complete path and filename MUST remain identical.

Subject: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?

Hi Framers,

I have Frame 8 with all the updates/patches running on a WinXp system
with 3gig RAM, 500gig HD, and a 2GHz Core 2 CPU. I have about 55
drawings imported by reference in a single Frame file. When one or more
of the imported by reference drawings changes, Frame gives the option to
update the path to the drawing or to skip the file or ignore all missing
files. When I try to select skip this file or ignore all missing files,
frame just redisplays the Missing File window. I have made sure Frame is
not looking for a different drawing, I cannot get Frame to skip or
ignore. Anyone ever had this problem, thank you all in advance for your
help.

As Art said, you need to set up your master pages correctly.

When the text frames on your master pages have the Autoconnect property
turned on, FM automatically creates new pages as each fills up. But it
uses the default Left or Right master page (as appropriate) as a
template for each new page.

If you've simply modified a specific page's text frame to produce a
two-column layout, but not modified the master pages, then the new page
will have the one-column layout of the master page, not the customized
layout you created for the preceding page. Please study the portions of
the online help and/or manual dealing with page layouts and master
pages.

 Rick,
The only way that I can see is that something in the path or filename
of
the graphics must be different or you aren't saving the Frame file
once
you have redirected the file to point to the proper graphic file
 location.

When you open a Frame file, that can't locate a referenced graphic,

you select to skip this file, the next time you open that particular

 Rick,
On your first email, I opened a graphic and made some edits. I did not
change the graphic filename. Then open the corresponding Frame file
 without
 any problems.

I renamed the graphic file and reopened the Frame book. When it ran
 into the
missing graphic, I selected Ignore and it just ignored that graphic
 and
opened the file. I closed the Frame file and tried it again and
 selected
Skip and got the same response.

This tends to tell me that something in Frame has gotten corrupted.
 You
might try reinstalling, at least the latest patch (p277) and then try
opening the file. If this doesn't fix it, then I would re0install
 Frame8 and
 then, of course, all updates.

For the record, the Wash as MIF command works perfectly in the free trial
version of Mif2Go. The only thing affected by the trial version vs. the fully
licensed version is that the word order is randomized in many of the converted
output formats (e.g. HTML Help) so that you cannot use the trial version to
produce real deliverables. The utility functions work fine.

Manual washing is only a few simple steps (saving as MIF, then opening the MIF
and saving as .fm), but when you have Wash via MIF in the menu you get really
lazy...

Oops, l should be the one feeling stupid for recommending the MIF save when the

Will heroic open get you past the Missing File dialog?

Or another approach to try is using FileImportFile to import the content of

you can fix that part so this just doesn't happen anymore.

Or to deal specifically with the immediate problem:

2) Put a file of the correct name in the correct location -- preferably

RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?

2009-08-18 Thread Richard Melanson
My apologies Richard, you did state this in an earlier response.

I use the import by reference function as a kind of alerting system. My
Engineering group has a bunch of directories filled with schematic and
mechanical drawings they convert to jpg or png or pdf. I then import by
reference from these directories into my Frame file to create a drawing
book. If Engineering is changing a drawing, it is taken out of its
original directory and placed into a pending directory waiting for the
DCO and the new drawing to become available. When Engineering moves the
file, this breaks the import by reference link thus alerting me that my
drawing book needs to be updated.

Its at this point I run into my problem of not being able to get by the
Missing File window. I have also run into the scenario you state below
where multiple files have been moved for updating. I get an updated
drawing placed back into its original directory, Frame recognizes the
new drawing and moves on to the next missing file and sticks, its as if
the Ignore and Skip functions just don't work.

Re: Diagonal line in a header cell

2009-08-18 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Stephen,

The only thing I can think of is to make an anchored frame in the cell
and locate it outside the frame, then move it over the cell and make a
diagonal line touching the middle of the cell border lines (corners).
Then resize the frame and locate it so that it will show the whole
line.

If you have more tables that need the same line just copy and paste
the anchored frame.

I have a table with titles in the header area and
also in the left column (let's say the headers

like the header cell in the upper left corner to
have a diagonal line from top left to bottom
right where I could type Stats above the diagonal
and Cities below as titles for the 2 sets of headers.

This seems a common presentation style to me. I
can't figure out how to make a good clean

cell corner simply - or do I have to insert an anchored frame, etc.

 Any ideas are appreciated.

RE: Variables established at book level?

2009-08-18 Thread David Spreadbury
Nancy,
At my last full-time position we developed our documents to a
telecommunications spec. In the spec there is defined a DocID (Document
Identifier) file. In this file, which is not published with the book, we had
place holders for all of the book-wide variables; title, doc no., doc date, etc.

When we worked on a book, this file was usually the first file worked on by
updating all of the variables that applied.

Then, with this file saved and minimized, all of the variables were imported to
all of the other chapters of the book. Made for a very easy way to control the
book-wide variables.

Subject: Variables established at book level?

Thanks.

OK, I see now.

If multiple missing files are all in the same new location, say
../pending_graphics, then in the FM Missing Files dialog, you only need
to identify the new path once for the first missing file. FM will look
in that same location for the other missing ones, rather than bothering
you again.

Of course, with your workflow, you'll have to point FM back to the
original location once the changed files are DCOed. A PITA, for sure...

Personally, I think the workflow leaves a lot to be desired. If a
graphics directory is the repository for files imported into FM by
reference, then those files should never be removed, only replaced by
newer versions with the same name.

A different alerting system can surely be devised. For instance, if
there is a file xyz_123.png in the ../graphics directory, the appearance
of a file with the same name in the ../pending_graphics directory should
be enough of an alert without the former being removed. If the engineers
can't/won't leave the former where it is pending DCO of the latter, then
perhaps you should use a different directory as the source for the
graphics. Copy all the files in ../graphics to your /docsource_graphics
directory. A script could do that. A script could also look at
../pending_graphics periodically to alert you to upcoming changes.

2009-08-18 Thread Dov Isaacs
Exactly how are you printing FM books to PS?

Assuming that you really want to manually produce PostScript and then distill
same,
the proper manner to do this is to print to the Adobe PDF PostScript Printer
Driver
instance but directed to file. That method uses the Distiller PPD. My best
guess is
that you created PostScript by printing to file using some generic or
monochrome
PostScript printer driver instance. That would have caused the symptoms you
describe.

Any idea why? Do I need to change/configure any settings?  I do not face this

Dear all,

while downloading Skype, I noticed a nice zoom effect on screenshots of their
procedure:

Do you know which tool can do this (possible with Snagit?)

Thank you all!

Thanks.

Hi All,

I'm working on a DITA/Frame project right now and am faced with a graphics
challenge .

SetPrint plug-in & FM 9 within the TCS 2.0

2009-08-18 Thread Art Campbell
Two points...

The directions actually say to create a SetPrint directory _under_
\Plugins, which I don't think you did. ("then copy SetPrint.dll to a
new directory named C:\Program
Files\Adobe\FrameMaker6.0\fminit\Plugins\SetPrint")

And the web page does point out that it was only tested with FM 6 and
7 although I haven't seen any reports of problems with later
versions. I'd expect it to work.

TCS shouldn't have any effect at all -- it's a FM plug-in.

Is there a way to establish variables in the first file in your book file and

The appeal is, I establish book title, part number, and rev date variables on

Text inset (FM9)

Blessings
Jerilynne

log out, logout or log off logoff

2009-08-18 Thread Jon Harvey

My team had issues with this a long time ago until we considered the
gerund and past tense forms of the term:

logout-->logouting; log out-->logging out.

Logout-->logouted; log out-->logged out.

As a result, the terms "log out" and "log in" made more sense.

Text inset (FM9)

This comes up every few months on the list. There is no "extra carriage
return" being added. When you import a text inset, you're importing it
_at the cursor location_. More than likely, that's in an empty body pgf.
A text inset always "sits" in a pgf -- it has to, it's just another text
object, like a char, xref, or marker.

This is analogous to the related bug regarding char formats: when a char
format extends all the way to the end of the pgf, it creates a pgf
override.

The solution in both cases is "don't do that." If you import text insets
into empty pgfs, always put something between the text inset and the end
of the pgf that contains it (I use a non-breaking space so there's a
visible symbol, but anything will do). By all means, work with text
symbols displayed so you can see the pilcrow at the end of a pgf, etc.

HTH!
Richard

Can we change the track text edit marker colours in FM8?

2009-08-18 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Karen,

I am pretty sure I replied to Heidi directly, but you can change the
color/style properties with FrameScript. If you are interested in a script
to do it, please contact me off list. Thank you very much.

Adding to Dov Isaacs' reply:

Using Presentation Assistant (FM-to-Acrobat TimeSavers add-on),
transparency is supported with rectangles (of different types), circles,
JPEG images, and -- on a limited basis -- with text strings.
All items are inserted/controlled through hypertext markers. For text items
(typically one-line strings), you can specify the font, size, color and
blending mode.

A sample PDF is available at
http://www.microtype.com/showcase/PresentAsst/TransparentButton.pdf

PDF blending modes are similar to those available in Photoshop (see
http://www.microtype.com/showcase/PresentAsst/Transparentbutton-BlendModes.pdf
)

Automatic Output Generation of FrameMaker Documents

2009-08-18 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Fei Min,

For FrameMaker scripting, nothing beats FrameScript. I have written a bunch
of FrameMaker to PDF scripts over the years.

Subject: Automatic Output Generation of FrameMaker Documents

We're in the final (hopefully) stages of setting up our FrameMaker
documentation set of manuals to generate PDF and HTML files as part of a
nightly build, and the programmers are somewhat surprised at how
difficult this has been. We have FrameMaker 7.2 running on Windows XP.
We're using Mif2Go to create the output files, and the scripting
language is Python. Just out of curiosity, who else out there is
automatically generating their output, and what tools are you using?

Variables established at book level?

2009-08-18 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

As stated previously, I am aware of the Import function.

I thought I had read of some way to set up some document features once, in the
book file, and have them ripple automatically through the rest of the book
files. My question is, has anyone heard of this?

Thanks.

Import by Reference Question/Bug ?

2009-08-18 Thread Richard Melanson

I have made sure Frame is
not looking for a different drawing, I cannot get Frame to skip or
ignore. Anyone ever had this problem, thank you all in advance for your
help.

Rick

Variables established at book level?

2009-08-18 Thread Owen, Clint
Nancy,

You can do it with cross references, but that can have it's own set of
problems.

You need to use each variable at least once in your title chapter. Each
one has to be in a paragraph by itself, possibly be on an unused master
page. Then create a cross reference marker in the paragraph that
contains each variable. Then cross reference from anywhere in your book
back to the markers in your title chapter. Once it is set up, you can
change every cross referenced copy at the same time by updating the
variables in the title chapter.
