Thanks Art and Stuart,

I needed to turn on the 'Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs'
option.
I have a feeling this issue has come up before, but I'd forgotten about
it! 

BTW - I'm printing a postscript file and then distilling, because it
seems to be the only way to get the book into a single PDF file. If I've
missed something, please let me know.

Glad you solved the problem.
Adobe PDF logical printers print books in a single step as the default
behaviour... As far as I know, the only way to get it to print into separate
files is to specify separate files on the FM print dialog box, to get around
the default.
So I'd suggest really looking at all the checkboxes on the Print dialog
box.to see what you're specifying. Generate Acrobat must be checked, but
Print To File and Separate files should be OFF.

Perhaps what is confusing Jo is that whenever you toggle the Generate Acrobat 
Data option from unchecked to checked, it also automatically selects the Print 
To File option. You can then uncheck Print To File without affecting the 
Generate Acrobat Data setting, but you have to remember to do it. On my first 
go at producing a PDF from a book, I forget that step as often as I remember 
it, and I periodically have to purge my system of all the unneeded and unused 
PS files that I created in those D'oh!!! moments.

But I agree that I have never observed the Separate Files option be selected as 
the default.

I think Jo said she is using 6.0, which may not have the separate files 
option.  But I seem to remember that early versions of FM would produce 
a separate PDF per chapter when printing from the book window if you put 
an asterisk (only) in the filename box for Print to file.

 Right you are, Stuart. I had been remembering FM6 as the first version that
 included the separate files option. But a quick visit to my bookshelf
 proved that I was mistaken; that feature wasn't introduced until FM7.
 But the fact is that the only way that you could get FM6 to produce
 separate PDFs for the chapters in a book was to print to file and use an
 asterisk in place of a filename. As I recall, there was no way to get
 separate PDFs directly; you always had to print to PS, then distill. It was
 about as far as you can get from default behavior.

Upgrading FM from 7.1 to 9

Hi,

My company is considering upgrading our FrameMaker from 7.1p114 to 9 
(yippee, we've never upgraded before!).

We're all running Win XP.


Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but do we open our v7.1 FM files in 
v9 and then save them as v9? Or is it more complicated than that?

Once our FM files are saved as v9, can any users still using v7.1 still 
read them (there's a chance our counterpart US office won't get the 
upgrade to v9)? Or would we need to save back as v7 for those rare 
occasions? Are there any known issues with doing this?

We currently using WebWorks (WebWorks  AutoMap 2003 Client within FM 
menu) to produce CHM files. Will this be affected if we upgrade to v9?

When you buy a v9 licence, do you automatically get all the patches that 
are released?

Any other tips for upgrading?

Can anyone confirm that v7.1 is no longer supported by Adobe?

Hi, Lynn!

Short answers to some of your questions:
Yes, opening the docs in v9 is all you have to do and save as you
normally do.
However, you can only backsave to v8 from v9. We have run into this
problem several times, having to find someone one on v8 to then backsave
to v7.

Lynn,
I haven't upgraded to FM9, yet. It might happen in the near future though.

In all the upgrades I have done with FrameMaker in the past, to get your
documents updated just open and save. Everything should work just fine.

As far as those members of your team that are staying on an earlier release,
you would need to do a SaveAs FM7.x any documents that you send to them. You
would need to do this each and every time, so getting everyone on the same
version as soon as possible would save you some work. Also, if you use any
of the new features of FM9, you will lose them when you SaveAs FM7.x.

I don't use WebWorks, but if memory serves me, every time you upgrade FM you
upgrade WebWorks. This can get pretty expensive if you have a lot of users.

 Yes, that's all there is to it, but you need to SaveAs MIF.

 You need to back save to a MIF format. The issues would be that any
features in 9 would drop out in 7. If you use any foreign characters, that'd
be a problem because 9 supports unicode characters and fonts, but 7 did not.

 Webworks doesn't exist as a product any longer. It became ePublisher, and
the current version is required to support FM9.

You're likely to be better off financially by upgrading to the Tech Comm
Suite so you can also get the current version of Acrobat and then switch to
RoboHelp.

 It depends on when Adobe updates their CDs to include the patches.
Downloading them or using the built-in installer is pretty painless though.

 Some people have reported font issues with really old font files.

 Support stopped when version 8 shipped several years ago.

Problems Generating TOC on Newly Translated File

OS: XP Pro with SP3

I received my translated book back from the LSP complete with TOC, which seemed 
to be fine.

After tweaking the formatting in 10 chapters and 7 Appendices, then copying in 
the correct Variables file I tried to Update the TOC (and all Numbering, 
Cross-references, Text Insets and OLE links).

Instead of 6 pages of proper TOC it generated less than one page of what seems 
to be page numbers only. I have consulted the Manual and Scriptorium FrameMaker 
book to no avail.

I've tried everything I know (which as a FrameMaker newbie is probably not 
much) and cannot get the TOC to generate. I had hoped to have this completed 
last night, but gave up in frustration. A fresh look this morning hasn't helped.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted. (I can supply a TIF of what the 
LSP provided and what I generate if that would be of any help.)

Now find the TOC spec in the ref pages of a good TOC and compare it to
the bad TOC spec. It may look more like this: 

$chapnum  $paratext  $pagenum
(there are tabs in there, including a leader tab in front of $pagenum)

If that's the situation, try this: Copy all the text in the good TOC
specification and replace all the text in the bad TOC specification with
it. Then update/regenerate. 

If I'm completely off base regarding the situation or that doesn't solve
the problem, try spending some quality time in the Tables of Contents
section of the help/manual. Even if you can't figure it out, a better
understanding of TOCs in FM might help you describe the situation in
more detail.

I'm on the same page as Richard on this, but with a couple of twists

The most important one would be HOW the translation vendor was able to
generate any kind of TOC. Part of the deal is usually that you receive
working files back from the vendor, and it certainly sounds as if you
didn't. So that would be the big one. And one that may save you some time
and money.

To fix it...
First, I'd make a copy of the unmodified translated directory.
Assuming they didn't rename any of your tags... I'd try importing formats
and Ref pages from a working TOC into the faulty TOC and then update to see
what you get. This is a version of what Richard suggested, but I'd try
updating first to see if you can avoid the micro-level troubleshooting.

If that fails, I'd try setting up the translated content files in a new
book, and generate a new TOC.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted. (I can supply a TIF of what the 
LSP provided and what I generate if that would be of any help.)

Richard:

I always tweak the layout (making changes to column widths, breaking text 
streams in better places, etc). I have found that no matter how much you pay 
for DTP they never get it exactly right - so I don't pay for final DTP costs 
and do it myself. We often go the extra step of sending a completed/tweaked 
manual to an in-country proofer (native speakers with expertise in our field) 
and I have never had a complaint regarding this issue.

FYI: All my manuals are laid out with numbered headings so I always know 
exactly where I am regardless of language (and I actually have a degree in 
Spanish so for this language, understanding the content is no problem).

Rick Quattro gave me some invaluable help over the phone so I (he) figured out 
where my inexperience had led me astray - I didn't have the correct formats 
selected for inclusion in the TOC.

Maybe in 10 years I'll have this program completely figured out!

It's entirely possible that I screwed this up on my own (not that my LSP hasn't 
been known to make a mistake - this time I had to ask for 4 files to be 
regenerated as they were a mix of English and Spanish!). When I get a moment 
I'll delve into VSS to look at the original file they sent and check it out.

As I said to Richard, Rick Quattro figured this out for me so everything is now 
working as it should be.

Thanks for your input. The people on this list have been extremely helpful - I 
try and keep up with the topics every day and make sure to follow any thread 
that sheds light on issues that might affect me as well.

that works, although this won't be a satisfactory solution for the

I've updated StructureSnippets to support plain text nodes and will 
release an updated version in a couple weeks after a bit more testing. 
I'll send the FM9 version to you directly for testing.

hyperlink problem - solved

Thanks Art and Stuart,

I needed to turn on the 'Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs'
option.
I have a feeling this issue has come up before, but I'd forgotten about
it! 

BTW - I'm printing a postscript file and then distilling, because it
seems to be the only way to get the book into a single PDF file. If I've
missed something, please let me know.

Glad you solved the problem.
Adobe PDF logical printers print books in a single step as the default
behaviour... As far as I know, the only way to get it to print into separate
files is to specify separate files on the FM print dialog box, to get around
the default.
So I'd suggest really looking at all the checkboxes on the Print dialog
box.to see what you're specifying. Generate Acrobat must be checked, but
Print To File and Separate files should be OFF.

Perhaps what is confusing Jo is that whenever you toggle the Generate Acrobat 
Data option from unchecked to checked, it also automatically selects the Print 
To File option. You can then uncheck Print To File without affecting the 
Generate Acrobat Data setting, but you have to remember to do it. On my first 
go at producing a PDF from a book, I forget that step as often as I remember 
it, and I periodically have to purge my system of all the unneeded and unused 
PS files that I created in those "D'oh!!!" moments.

But I agree that I have never observed the Separate Files option be selected as 
the default.

Right you are, Stuart. I had been remembering FM6 as the first version that 
included the separate files option. But a quick visit to my bookshelf proved 
that I was mistaken; that feature wasn't introduced until FM7.

But the fact is that the only way that you could get FM6 to produce separate 
PDFs for the chapters in a book was to print to file and use an asterisk in 
place of a filename. As I recall, there was no way to get separate PDFs 
directly; you always had to print to PS, then distill. It was about as far as 
you can get from default behavior.

Upgrading FM from 7.1 to 9

My company is considering upgrading our FrameMaker from 7.1p114 to 9 
(yippee, we've never upgraded before!).

We're all running Win XP.


Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but do we open our v7.1 FM files in 
v9 and then save them as v9? Or is it more complicated than that?

Once our FM files are saved as v9, can any users still using v7.1 still 
read them (there's a chance our counterpart US office won't get the 
upgrade to v9)? Or would we need to save back as v7 for those rare 
occasions? Are there any known issues with doing this?

We currently using WebWorks (WebWorks > AutoMap 2003 Client within FM 
menu) to produce CHM files. Will this be affected if we upgrade to v9?

When you buy a v9 licence, do you automatically get all the patches that 
are released?

Any other tips for upgrading?

Hi, Lynn!

Short answers to some of your questions:
Yes, opening the docs in v9 is all you have to do and save as you
normally do.
However, you can only backsave to v8 from v9. We have run into this
problem several times, having to find someone one on v8 to then backsave
to v7.

Upgrading FM from 7.1 to 9

Lynn,
I haven't upgraded to FM9, yet. It might happen in the near future though.

In all the upgrades I have done with FrameMaker in the past, to get your
documents updated just open and save. Everything should work just fine.

As far as those members of your team that are staying on an earlier release,
you would need to do a SaveAs FM7.x any documents that you send to them. You
would need to do this each and every time, so getting everyone on the same
version as soon as possible would save you some work. Also, if you use any
of the new features of FM9, you will lose them when you SaveAs FM7.x.

I don't use WebWorks, but if memory serves me, every time you upgrade FM you
upgrade WebWorks. This can get pretty expensive if you have a lot of users.

be a problem because 9 supports unicode characters and fonts, but 7 did not.

You're likely to be better off financially by upgrading to the Tech Comm
Suite so you can also get the current version of Acrobat and then switch to
RoboHelp.

Problems Generating TOC on Newly Translated File

OS: XP Pro with SP3

I received my translated book back from the LSP complete with TOC, which seemed 
to be fine.

After tweaking the formatting in 10 chapters and 7 Appendices, then copying in 
the correct Variables file I tried to Update the TOC (and all Numbering, 
Cross-references, Text Insets and OLE links).

Instead of 6 pages of proper TOC it generated less than one page of what seems 
to be page numbers only. I have consulted the Manual and Scriptorium FrameMaker 
book to no avail.

I've tried everything I know (which as a FrameMaker newbie is probably not 
much) and cannot get the TOC to generate. I had hoped to have this completed 
last night, but gave up in frustration. A fresh look this morning hasn't helped.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted. (I can supply a TIF of what the 
LSP provided and what I generate if that would be of any help.)

Problems Generating TOC on Newly Translated File

Umm... should you really be doing this? I'm no expert on handling
translations (that's someone else's job), so maybe I'm off base. But
when we get translated books back, we generally make no changes to the

each of those pgfs contains only the page number variable (<$pagenum>). 

Now find the TOC spec in the ref pages of a good TOC and compare it to
the bad TOC spec. It may look more like this: 

<$chapnum>  <$paratext>  <$pagenum>
(there are tabs in there, including a leader tab in front of <$pagenum>)

If that's the situation, try this: Copy all the text in the good TOC
specification and replace all the text in the bad TOC specification with
it. Then update/regenerate. 

If I'm completely off base regarding the situation or that doesn't solve
the problem, try spending some quality time in the "Tables of Contents"
section of the help/manual. Even if you can't figure it out, a better
understanding of TOCs in FM might help you describe the situation in
more detail.

I'm on the same page as Richard on this, but with a couple of twists

The most important one would be HOW the translation vendor was able to
generate any kind of TOC. Part of the deal is usually that you receive
working files back from the vendor, and it certainly sounds as if you
didn't. So that would be the big one. And one that may save you some time
and money.

To fix it...
First, I'd make a copy of the unmodified translated directory.
Assuming they didn't rename any of your tags... I'd try importing formats
and Ref pages from a working TOC into the faulty TOC and then update to see
what you get. This is a version of what Richard suggested, but I'd try
updating first to see if you can avoid the micro-level troubleshooting.

If that fails, I'd try setting up the translated content files in a new
book, and generate a new TOC.

much) and cannot get the TOC to generate. I had hoped to have this completed 
last night, but gave up in frustration. A fresh look this morning hasn't helped.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted. (I can supply a TIF of what the 
LSP provided and what I generate if that would be of any help.)

Problems Generating TOC on Newly Translated File

Richard:

I always tweak the layout (making changes to column widths, breaking text 
streams in better places, etc). I have found that no matter how much you pay 
for DTP they never get it exactly right - so I don't pay for final DTP costs 
and do it myself. We often go the extra step of sending a completed/tweaked 
manual to an in-country proofer (native speakers with expertise in our field) 
and I have never had a complaint regarding this issue.

FYI: All my manuals are laid out with numbered headings so I always know 
exactly where I am regardless of language (and I actually have a degree in 
Spanish so for this language, understanding the content is no problem).

Rick Quattro gave me some invaluable help over the phone so I (he) figured out 
where my inexperience had led me astray - I didn't have the correct formats 
selected for inclusion in the TOC.

Maybe in 10 years I'll have this program completely figured out!

It's entirely possible that I screwed this up on my own (not that my LSP hasn't 
been known to make a mistake - this time I had to ask for 4 files to be 
regenerated as they were a mix of English and Spanish!). When I get a moment 
I'll delve into VSS to look at the original file they sent and check it out.

As I said to Richard, Rick Quattro figured this out for me so everything is now 
working as it should be.

Thanks for your input. The people on this list have been extremely helpful - I 
try and keep up with the topics every day and make sure to follow any thread 
that sheds light on issues that might affect me as well.

that works, although this won't be a satisfactory solution for the
authors. Please let me know when you release a new version of
StructureSnippets which can also handle simple text nodes.

I've updated StructureSnippets to support plain text nodes and will 
release an updated version in a couple weeks after a bit more testing. 
I'll send the FM9 version to you directly for testing.
