FrameMaker 12 Package function doesn't really work
Hi group I've got an Fm file with graphics imported by reference. The Fm file is in folder A and the graphics are in folder B, C and D. When I try to create a package, I get a message saying that I opted not to create [a] package if dependent file(s) are missing and that files will not be copied as they exist outside [the] containing folder of the document to be packaged. No I did not opt this and I thought that was the whole idea of creating a package: to collect all the linked graphics into a single folder (or subfolders), as the Archive plugin or the Archive ExtendScript did. So, when I click Continue after seeing the above messages, a ZIP file is created but it only contains my Fm file, no graphics. Re: Getting a handle on structured Frame (DITA)
Hi Theresa, although this will not help you at the moment: Structured authoring is not like loading a new and maybe a little bit strange template from somewhere and thats it. It is a completely different approach of thinking. There are tons of books about this and all of them say: Take your time... First step: Define your structural needs. Them: Implement a suitable DTD (or Schema) and adjust your tools and processes. The advice is to calculate at least one year for this, before the actual work could start (you are already worried about a few days...). The main strength of structured writing is the reliability and the flexibility (if everything is well done) - of course we are talking of hundreds and thousands of documents. The main problem is: There are cases when the structure is either too narrow or too loose, and most authors do not know how to adjust the DTD but would sort of bend the material or misuse structural elements, thus weakening the aforementioned strength. So, I definitely agree with Rick: You should start thinking about your own DTD first and then compare this with DITA or any other made-up DTD. Best regards - Tino H. Haida Theresa de Valence: On 8/13/2014 11:21 AM, Scott Prentice wrote: XML for sure, and personally I'd use DITA. However, when I look at the DITA applications in structapps.fm, I cannot tell which application is used for plain ordinary text (i.e. what consitutes para). How does one use DITA for: --Book Chapter --Section Body Is this what the DITA map is? [And here I thought we were going to have geographical maps in the book 8-) ] Thanks, Theresa P.S. RE: Getting a handle on structured Frame (DITA)
I think Rick is correct. Think of building small xml docs with a particular need in mind to get an idea of what structure is about. The infrastructure behind supporting a small xml doc is the same as for a large document (only with fewer of each of the parts that have to be defined in things like the DTD and the EDD). My first xml exploration involved data in a spreadsheet exported to tabbed text and then wrapped in xml tags. The problem then was to display the data elements in a document. Craig - Hi, I am going to offer a contrary opinion. I wouldn't start with DocBook, DITA, or any existing applications. I would create a simple, custom application to get my feet wet. I do this when I train clients, even if they are using DITA, etc. It helps them to digest the concepts with a small application; then they can figure out how to get around in larger applications. Help with the future of Mif2Go/DITA2Go/uDoc2Go?
Hi... Just sending out another email to these groups to make sure that anyone interested in helping to guide the future direction of Mif2Go, DITA2Go, and uDoc2Go has signed up for the omsys-dev Yahoo group .. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/omsys-dev/info As Jeremy had wished, the code for his tools will be made available to the open source community, and the omsys-dev group is where we'll discuss exactly how to do that. You don't need to be a developer or have any specific expertise (although that's very helpful), other than an interest in these tools. I'll be starting the discussion next week, and want to make sure that everyone interested is on-board from the beginning. Re: Mif2Go suddenly failing on all machines
Here's the latest, after an afternoon of research (= banging my head against the wall): - The project fails almost immediately, with this error: Mif2Go failed for file: C:\Project\Users_Roles.html type 1, code 2, at: Wed Aug 13 15:46:36 2014 Could not run DCL filter or other program. File not found. - All Mif2Go files are present and in the right places following an uninstall and fresh install from new ZIP. This means I do not know what file cannot be found. - I get the same failure even for projects that succeeded earlier in the day, with the same previously-successful ini files. - I have used (and resolved issues with) Mif2Go for 10 years, so I know how things should look - they look OK. - The save process generates good MIFs. I get the same error for each file, with the option to quit. If I do not quit, it makes a mif for the next file and then I get the error again. Mif2Go.ini increments normally for each file generated. - If I push through to the end, it generates all the MIFs but it does not clean them up and it generates no output, nor the _wrap folder. - The history and the log file look normal. - All the Mif2Go exe dll files have full write permissions, including the two new ones in \fminit\Plugins. And remember that the whole system worked flawlessly for two big books before failing on the third, much smaller book just an hour later. I appreciate any ideas! Re: Mif2Go suddenly failing on all machines
John... This is just grasping at straws .. but do you have extra DLLs in the \fminit\Plugins folder? All FDK DLLs in that folder (or subfolders) get loaded when FM starts. If you've got extra DLLs that are duplicates of others that could cause some problems. I can't say what the proper list of mif2go DLLs should be, but if you added two new ones, you may have needed to remove the two that were being replaced. And .. don't just move the old ones into a subfolder called old .. they will get loaded there too. ...scott On 8/14/14 2:40 PM, John Sgammato wrote: Here's the latest, after an afternoon of research (= banging my head against the wall): * The project fails almost immediately, with this error: Mif2Go failed for file: C:\Project\Users_Roles.html type 1, code 2, at: Wed Aug 13 15:46:36 2014 Could not run DCL filter or other program. RE: Mif2Go suddenly failing on all machines
Hi, John. This is a complete SWAG here. Maybe it is unable to run the program “DCL.EXE” which is in the omsyshome\Omsys\system\common\bin folder (of course, omsyshome is likely different for you). So, have you made sure that your search path in Windows is set to include the omsyshome\Omsys\system\common\bin folder, perhaps (and that the dcl.exe file is present in that folder … although I think you said you checked this already)? You can verify this by using a Windows Command Prompt to see if you can manually execute that program, or it says it is not recognized. Here is the example from my system (which is my own DOS program that emulates the Unix equivalent ☺ … if you want a copy, please let me know). C:\which dcl C:\home\Omsys\common\bin\dcl.exe C:\foobar 'foobar' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. C:\dcl usage: dcl [-abx] [-lmp] [-v] [-f format] [-s source] [-t target] [-o output] files... After you add it in, please do make sure to log out and log back in for the environment variables to get read again. Hope this helps! Re: Mif2Go suddenly failing on all machines
Thanks Syed - DCL runs fine from the command line (that is, it does not return a not found error. I was very careful about setting up my environment system variables. In other news, just now when I closed FM12, I got a message about FM needing Compatibility Mode, which would be aut-applied the next time I started FM. I restarted FM and saving to Mif2Go failed as before :( On Thu, Aug 14, 2014 at 6:17 PM, Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net) syed.hos...@aeris.net wrote: Hi, John.
