Re: mouse alternative
Even better, get a trackball. You rest your hand in place and only move your thumb (plus occasionally click with a finger). Plus, you never run into that PITA issue where your mouse goes off the edge of the mouse pad, but you need to scroll further, so you have to lift the mouse, pull it back toward you, and set it down to continue scrolling-- sometimes multiple times. With a trackball, you only lift your thumb. (Or set the scroll rate to encompass the whole screen in one thumb swipe.) I've been using a trackball for years and would never go back to a mouse. Here are a couple from Logitech. I use an older model similar to the M570: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs Mike Wickham On 11/11/2014 9:42 AM, Stuart Rogers wrote: Hi all, From time to time, people have mentioned problems with RSI due to mouse use. Updating them shouldn’t be an issue – always maintain a backup of the FM9 original files in case something goes south. Make sure you’ve updated FM12 before upgrading the FM9 files. For learning, I always recommend Matt Sullivan’s FM book Unstructured FM11 as the FM bible. Which trackball do people use and like? I have been thinking of switching, but I need to find something relatively small since I travel a lot. My laptop pad does not cut it - too much in the center (the usual compromise for right and left handed people), At present, I use a small Microsoft Bluetooth mouse - wireless and fits well in my laptop case. Re: mouse alternative
I've been using Kensington Expert Mouse trackballs for years. The current model is optical. Very smooth, rarely needs cleaning. Comes with an optional wrist support, which I use, my one complaint about the product is that that tends to come loose. I have not found smaller trackballs as easy to use. I use them with Kinesis Freestyle 2 keyboards with the VIP3 lifter attachment. I place the two parts of the keyboard about 6.5 apart. http://www.ergonomicssimplified.com/products/images/keyboards/kinesis_freestyle_vip1.jpg Using a laptop keyboard for any amount of time seems like a good way to injure yourself. I can fit a Freestyle and Expert Mouse in my not very large laptop backpack with room to spare. Re: mouse alternative
I use my Wacom tablet for drawing, but it also came with a mouse that let's you use the tablet as a trackpad. Perhaps they still have models like that. It was much better than a mouse, but not as nice as a trackball, in my opinion. Mike On 11/11/2014 12:43 PM, Fred Wersan wrote: I've been using a Wacom tablet for years. Speaking of keyboards, I won't part with my Unicomp buckling spring keyboard. They are the famous, original IBM keyboards that are heavy duty, have a great tactile feel with a nice audible click, and the keycaps are double-injected. So the letters can never wear off them. They should last a lifetime. Find them here in several configurations: http://pckeyboard.com/page/category/UKBD Mike Wickham On 11/11/2014 12:40 PM, Robert Lauriston wrote: I use them with Kinesis Freestyle 2 keyboards with the VIP3 lifter attachment. Re: mouse alternative
Those are all the same bad configuration as far as ergonomics. The Lexmark M15 was fully split with buckling-spring switches.
