Re: [Framers] Zapf Dingbats

2016-06-30 Thread Theresa de Valence
Sorry, if I said that I mis-spoke. When highlighting the character that
does not display correctly, CTRL-D shows the family to be ZapfDingbats.
I eventually realized that does not mean the font is actually installed.

I no longer have anything but 8 and 12 installed on this computer. Frame
7.2 CD did not have Adobe Type Manager.

In FrameMaker 6, the file for ZapfDingbats was in C:\Program

it was in a similar location. I believe you could re-install by
following the instructions at:

http://www.adobe.com/products/type/install-instructions.html

That would fix things if the problem is a corrupt font. If the problem
is bad font mapping, you need to edit the FM12 maker.ini.

Re: [Framers] Zapf Dingbats

2016-06-30 Thread Robert Lauriston
The font must be installed since it appears in FM8. The question is
why it's not appearing in FM12 on the same system.

The Type 1 font files are Zd__.pfb and Zd__.pfm.

Later versions of FrameMaker have a tendency to create multiple copies
of maker.ini. Usually the one with the most recent file date is the
current one.

PPD files are printer drivers.

Then it's probably a PostScript Type 1 font somewhere else on your
system. Search for Zd__.pfb or Zd__.pfm. The Adobe Type
Manager default location used to be c:\psfonts\pfm. They could also be
in a Font directory under an Adobe application directory in Program
Files.

Right. I believe that the Character Designer is designed to list fonts that are
specified in your document even if they are not installed on your system. There
used to be (and may still be--I haven't looked lately) a couple of options for
whether Frame remembers the names of missing fonts, and it's possible those
options (if they still exist) interact with what is shown in the Character
Designer's list of fonts.

fonts not being bundled with applications after a certain time. The official
reason given by most software publishers was that the PostScript outline and
metrics files were required to be built into all PostScript compatible printers
as printer-resident fonts. This was not done in the early days of PostScript
printers because the cost of non-volatile storage (e.g., EPROM) was not
trivial. Once the "real" font files were ubiquitously printer resident, there
was no need to distribute them in "soft" form with applications since there was
no need to download them to the printer with each print job. Instead, it was
only necessary to distribute simplified versions of the fonts to provide
on-screen display and the font metric information needed on Windows systems for
the printer driver to calculate line lengths for text wrapping. Of course, the
whole landscape changed with the adoption of Unicode, but that
 's another story.

BTW, the "14" in "Base 14" refers to four variants (normal, bold, italic, and
bold italic) of Times, Helvetica, and Courier plus the Symbol and Zapf Dingbats
fonts.

Use unicode fonts; most modern fonts are unicode. A lot of glyphs are now
available in standard fonts that weren't in thefonts before.

Also, purchasing Zapf Dingbats can't be that expensive. I found a copy of the
Helvetica, Times and Zapf Dingbat fonts that Adobe no longer includes with
FrameMaker in an old copy of Illustrator or Pagemaker that I had. I ran the
installer and just chose to use those fonts. These fonts are likely to not
include glyphs in the more modern versions of the same fonts.

The reason those fonts are no longer included is that they are not Adobe fonts
and had to be licensed from somebody else.

Re: [Framers] Zapf Dingbats

2016-06-30 Thread Robert Lauriston
If you see the font on screen in FM8, and it prints correctly, then I
think it must be installed.

If it's the old PostScript font, check that both the .pfm and .pfb
files are installed.

Close FM12, compare the maker.ini for FM8 and FM12, make a backup copy
of the one for FM12, edit the original in a text editor, and make any
entries re ZapfDingbats match FM8. Or delete any references to
ZapfDingbats in FM12 if there are none in FM8. Note that FM may create
multiple copies of maker.ini and use only one of them.

I know the old escape shortcuts for moving up and down in a table broke;
however, Frame now lets you use cursors to move from row to row or column
to column.

I've also noticed that sometimes, shortcuts that have BEEN working will
suddenly stop working, and you have to restart the program to get them
back. I tend to notice on things like the Copy special - Column Width
shortcut.

Are FM8 and FM12 on the same system?

Which Windows version(s)?

Are you printing to a PostScript printer, if so which one and what
driver are you using?

The Unicode version of ZapfDingbats won't solve this problem since the
character map is different. Adobe Pi does not have the same set of
glyphs.

Re: [Framers] Access to Acrobat Help after End of Life support?

2016-06-30 Thread Penelope Perkins
Lin,

The PDF may have been installed with the software; you just have to hunt around
in the Adobe folders on your machine for it. If not, you can download it from a
number of places other than Adobe. For example, you can find it here:

http://www.mvc.edu/files/acrobat_X_pro_help.pdf

I can sympathize. Something similar happened to me the other day when I was
trying to research an error in Windows Update
on my Windows 7 machine. Every link that Google gave me to the Microsoft
website brought up a page about the impending end of free upgrades to Windows
10. (Implying, perhaps, that upgrading was the way to resolve the error?)
Fortunately, I was able to find the answer in a non-Microsoft user forum.

Penelope

Re: [Framers] Zapf Dingbats

2016-06-30 Thread Mike Wickham

I've heard recommendations to use Adobe Pi as a replacement.

The document may be printing fine because of printer-resident versions
of Zapf Dingbats on a Postscript printer. If you have a Postscript
printer, and still have the installation disk, it probably has a copy of
Zapf Dingbats that you can easily install on your computer to make the
font available to all programs.

Re: [Framers] Seeking FM12 license -- legit, of course 8-)

2016-06-30 Thread Craig Ede
An interesting aspect of Creative Cloud is the ability to retain older versions
when updates occur. (I assume this is still true.) It seems to me that a great
way to "sell" the subscription version of FM (or better yet, Creative Suite)
would be to allow installation of whatever older versions you might want. Of
course, this would really load down a single machine with software versions
since they would have to limit the installation to a single machine. But it
would solve the problem for a lot of users who don't really want to upgrade,
but need compatibility between two machines at some level below the current
version.

The other "sell" would be that it would give users access to the latest version
(not a trial) and they could really explore the new features as well as use the
older version in the "retro" environment they desire. There really is a lot of
good stuff in the current version.

This is not all of them, but includes some of the more useful.

Thanks for the useful follow-up, David.

I don't have the link to the complete list of FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts
handy, but perhaps you or someone else on the list has it and can post it.
IIRC, there are also some of KB commands that aren't documented, or that were
dropped in later compilations of the list, but still may work.

One that comes to mind is Freeze Pagination, Esc p Z I think it was, which
disconnected all the connected text frames in a document, for the purpose of
being able to insert supplementary or change pages, without affecting
pagination. Its downside was disrupting lots of other stuff in the doc.

After saving all open files, you can then close all files using the same

Hello, Framers,

I?m sure that most of you know this already, but I?m also sure that I can?t
be the only one who didn?t know :-)...

Turns out that there *is* a way to Save All Files in a .book. With the .book
file the active window/pane/pod/whatever-you-call-it, hold the Shift key
when you click the menu option, File. (I found this by googling,
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/768022).

Just a tip in case someone else has been wishing to do this (without closing
FrameMaker, which does ask which unsaved files you want to save), -Monique
