RE: FM12 Transparent Graphics PLUS New Question
Hi Craig, Thanks for the information. It is interesting that CMYK and RGB choices make a difference in the internal handling of graphics by FM. The failing keyboard commands have been going on for several months now, and I make sure the caps lock key is not on. I have been learning workarounds, even going so far as to saving a file with special characters (e.g., non-breaking hyphen) so that I can copy and paste. I have even used the search and replace to use the \+ to replace regular hyphens. The problem is seriously annoying. FM was extremely stable before Adobe added the new interface with pods. I don't mind the new interface, but I would prefer stable and predictable to fancy ... especially unnecessary fancy. Oh well ... It takes longer but works. I had two graphics with clipping paths that I was using on top of a patterned background. I never saw thin lines around the borders either. With the later FM12 updates CMYK caused some graphics to disappear entirely so that made CMYK printing impossibly chancy. RGB worked fine but lost the transparency. I never had problems with Esc-m-p except when the caps lock key was accidentally on or when neither a graphic or an anchored frame weren't selected. Worked every time for me. Same with non-breaking hyphens, so maybe your caps lock key is on. Can't comment on the en and em spaces. Good luck, Craig ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: FM12 Transparent Graphics PLUS New Question
Keith, In my opinion, the ribbon is not any better than menus that use drop-down lists. In most instances (for me), the ribbon is less intuitive than drop-down menus, and I frequently struggle to find specific commands. My tired old eyes prefer larger fonts and images, but the ribbons take up a lot of screen real estate compared to a single row of menu items. Why not offer drop-down menus that can be pulled away as free floating and dockable pods? All software house should provide an interface option that allows users to get all of the new features (in any specific release) with a choice of interface options: menu driven choices, ribbon choices, pod choices, keyboard commands, etc. And, of course, they should not rearrange the location of various commands unless those commands were truly in odd locations previously. Marketing decisions often seem to override functionality in favor of glitz and glitter. RE: FM12 Transparent Graphics PLUS New Question
Hello, Thanks to all who made suggestions for the use of transparent graphics. Even when using a clipping path in an EPS file, we had trouble with the thin line around the image border. We eventually decided to add the product image and the background logo as a single combined image ... because we can control all of the settings and variations within Adobe Illustrator. This does complicate our process just a little bit, but we get what we want. NEW QUESTION: Still FM12 on Win7 PC Why do keyboard commands sometimes get ignored? I like keyboard cmds such as [Esc] [m] [p] to minimize an anchored frame around a graphic image. When the PC is freshly booted and FrameMaker is freshly launched, this usually works. At times, however, keyboard commands are ignored. This also is true for commands such as [Esc] [Spacebar] [n or m] for en and em spaces, and [Esc] [-] [h] for non-breaking hyphens. It takes a reboot of FM software AND the Windows OS to get this feature to work ... but only sometimes ... at times I just need to wait a few days8-(ARGHHH ! In contrast, commands such as [Ctrl]+[q] [Shift]+[p] provide an en dash even when the Escape commands fail. Your advice is always appreciated. I have been on the digest since FM 4 and enjoy the information as well as the banter. FM12 Transparent Graphics
Hello Framers, We are using FM 12 (TCS 5) on Windows 7 PCs. The company has a new document style that includes a background image, which is a bit like having a watermark on the cover page. Re: Long change bars are created when a table is in between 2
Hi Simon, You could also use the Character Designer to apply change bars so that the table marker will not be included. You can use a mouse in the Character Designer dialog box, or use the keyboard. The key sequence for those change bars is Format Style Change Bar, which can by keyed on a Windows PC by: [Alt][o] [y] [c] This does not mean the behavior was not a bug, but it is a relatively easy workaround. As an aside, I sometimes want to have a change bar that includes an intermediate table. FM 9 does not do this the way your version behaves. If I highlight a long sequence of paragraphs, and use the Paragraph Designer to apply a change bar, the tables are skipped. If I use the Character Designer to apply the change bar, then the tables are included. RE: Disappearing Palette Items
Hi Karen, On this framers list, probably within the last two years, someone offered a suggestion about those customized workspaces. Get the FM interface (all pods, etc.) organized the way you like them, then save the workspace with a name that you like. TIP (this was the suggestion from the experienced framer): Then resave the workspace with another name, as a backup. I name mine ED_1 (for example), and then ED_1_BU. The purpose of the backup is that the workspace can get corrupted. Rather than start over, you can then just set the backup workspace, and from there, you can recreate the original (in order to maintain an original plus a backup). Others have already offered suggestions about how you get the desired workspace initially, and I have too little experience to add to their great comments. Hi Tori, You said: Sooo... just popped $400 to upgrade to FM11, solely for the line numbering. However, we're working on a set of engineering specs that contains many huge tables, and Frame isn't numbering any lines in the tables. Is this just the way it works? This is a killer issue for this project, and it Frame can't do it we'll have to resort back to our previous method of putting hard-coded line numbers on the master pages -- which client doesn't like because then every page has the same numbers. Your description of line numbering in tables did not describe how you are using those numbers. My writing group uses a paragraph tag set that we named CellNumbered1 and CellNumbered. We are on FrameMaker-9 with Windows-7. The critical part of building of the Autonumber Format is as follows: C:n=1.\t and C:n+.\t I tested these just now with three successive tables. I added CellNumbered1 to the top cell of a column and then added CellNumbered to several cells below in the same column and in multiple columns within a table. I continued the CellNumbered tag in the following table. In the third table, I returned to the use of CellNumbered1 to the top cell of a column and CellNumbered to several cells below. The numbering of the paragraphs was as expected whether the additional paragraphs were within a cell or in separate cells. The numbering continued across tables and was restarted as expected. RE: Line numbering tables in FM11?
Hi Tori, After sending my note, and before deleting the test file, I also placed the CellNumbered paragraph tag in place of body text paragraphs between tables. The numbering and renumbering were consistent inside and outside the tables. This might be applied to Headings and other paragraph types. I see no problem with applying the Autonumber Format to other paragraph tags, including all paragraph tags within your documents. This was just a wild suggestion that I meant to stimulate ideas. RE: Line numbering tables in FM11?
Correct, Richard. Tori, perhaps you could make the entire file a large table with one-line rows. The left column could be just large enough to hold numbers, and the right column could span the remaining text frame width. You would need to restart each line in a new row. Or you could use my previous idea and end each line (regardless of paragraph tag) with a return (no wrapping allowed). Or perhaps create a side head with a 1-column table for the line numbering. These are all clumsy solutions. Sorry, I've never been required to number each line. Hi Ragnar, The solution from Jim is a good one. Also, my current work group uses Century Schoolbook as our standard Body font. The symbols are still as I originally described, but FrameMaker 9 has a built‑in Character Palette. With your cursor in the desired location, open the palette by using: File == Utilities == Character Palette... The top list box in the palette displays the font, and you can select from the list of those available on your computer. You can select more than one character from the palette and can type in between those characters, but if you use the mouse to move your cursor, the palette closes. Century Schoolbook includes the Less-Than-or-Equal and the Greater-Than-or-Equal as characters within the font family (not symbol fonts). On my system, some of the palette characters work, and some do not. I do not know how the FrameMaker interface is intended to handle these symbols, so I just accept those that work with gratitude8-) Your standards fonts my have the characters you desire. And you can also select from the Symbol font family (you will need to apply symbol from your Character Catalog). All of my bulleted lists were messed up because of FM 9's translation of certain characters into different characters and the ensuing loss of the appropriate font to be applied to the symbols (Wingdings, in my case). I consulted the following two resources: http://iconlogic.blogs.com/weblog/2010/08/adobe-framemaker-9-but-i-dont- want-a-plain-round-bullet.html http://www.io.com/~tcm/etwr2472/guides/frame9/frame_tags.html These should get you on the path. Long story short: I defined a font-specific character format for each of my bullet symbols and applied it to each of the five different bullet styles that needed it. I did this in a clean doc created from a virgin, minimalist template and further stripped everything out of the new doc that I possibly could that wasn't related to the formats I desired. Then I stored this in my templates folder and imported this stripped-down, format-specific template into my book. I have two variables, one that uses the LTE symbol and another that use a hollow arrow symbol. I took a similar approach with that. That's as much detail as I can give you on this hectic day, but it worked well. Good luck! The character set document lists the same keystrokes as in previous FM sets for Greater Than or Equal To (GTE). The GTE character is created in standard font, and is then changed to Symbol font. Now, however, this produces a small box in Symbol font when created by using [Ctrl][q] [3]. While the ASCII character work-around is available, I am concerned

RE: Non-breaking hyphen in Index entries
Hi Nancy, You wrote: Message: 2 Date: Mon, 23 May 2011 15:24:46 -0500 (CDT) From: Nancy Allison ma...@verizon.net To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Non-breaking hyphen in Index entries I am being driven mad by a teensy technical question that I KNOW I have solved in the past. I have document with chapter-page numbering, and an index entry that is a tad long, so it breaks like this: apple pie, baking at high altitudes, 4- 6 When I go to the correct Reference page, I find the format set up as you would expect: $chapnum-$pagenum I have tried replacing the hyphen with Esc hyphen h and with \+ Neither works! What am I missing? I know I have done this before. Many thanks. Our index reference page also uses $chapnum-$pagenum with a non-breaking hyphen, and it does not break within the page number. Check that you saved the index file after you updated the reference page and before you regenerated the index. This would be the standard procedure, but I have made such errors myself 8-). If you do not save the index file before you regenerate, the changes will not be carried into later generations of the index.
