Modifying FM's default R/L master pages
Hello, Framers, FrameMaker imposes Right/Left master pages that can’t be deleted, although they can be modified—or so I thought. In one template, I changed the orientation of the default R/L master pages from Portrait to Landscape. However, after PDFing a book consisting of several chapters, some using the modified Right/Left and others using the default (portrait) Right/Left master pages, the result is all Portrait pages. To me this indicates that the PDFing procedure applied the same master pages to all pages. Is there a way around this? (Previously I used custom Landscape Right and Left pages but that caused other problems, which I hoped to avoid by just using default R L master pages that had been modified. ) Any wisdom will be greatly appreciated. Landscape master pages don't work
Hello again, Framers, I have three landscape master pages: LandscapeHeading1 (the first page), LandscapeRight, and LandscapeLeft. MasterPageMaps on the Reference page defines paragraph tag LandscapeTable to use Landscape Right and Landscape Left master pages, with a Range Indicator of Until changed. This is **supposed** to cause all pages containing that paragraph tag to use LandscapeRight and Landscape Left master pages, until a different paragraph tag is encountered. I had the occasional glitch where the last page would revert to portrait but if I put an empty LandscapeTable tag on it, it seemed to be okay. I'm not sure why but today everything stopped working. I can't retain landscape orientation when I apply master pages--the first one is okay but all the ones after that are portrait, no matter what I've tried. I'm out of ideas. Has anyone had experience with this issue and could share some wisdom? Manually resizing table cell width
Hi again, Framers-- To manually resize cell widths, I usually select the table cell (column or entire row) and click the little black resizing node (thanks, Curtis) to drag it and resize the cell wider or narrower. For whatever reason, I can no longer do this. I'm on FM 11, have been for a few months now, and I'm sure this is something new or else I'd have noticed this before now. Also, when I select a table cell and right-click, the selection highlighting disappears and the context menu no longer offers table formatting commands. What could I have done to bollux up this functionality? More important, how can I fix it? Subject: FrameMaker 11.1 Update: some notes
Hi Rob, Sorry for your problems with the upgrade--I haven't experienced those, because we're happy enough to just Save As PDF for the majority of our books. (I haven't printed to .ps since Adobe fixed the PDF issue a couple years back...) I'm writing again just to emphasize that my own problem wasn't really an upgrade failure, just a UBD problem (User Brain Dead). I've gotten used to double-clicking in a WinZip window to open files so I never save locally anymore, and just didn't snap duh that I should do so for an executable... Again, though, Adobe deserves some thanks, both to Kapil Verma, as you mentioned, and also to Vikram in TCS Support who was kind enough to contact me and get me sorted out. Hope you can solve your issues as quickly and easily! Regards, ~~Gay -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Rob Shell Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2012 2:16 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: FrameMaker 11.1 Update: some notes To Gay: My sympathies on the upgrade failure. The first problem that we were not notified automatically when using the check for updates from FrameMaker itself. If it was not for this list I would never have known about the update. Thank you, Kapil Verma. Having said that I did successfully install the update. The new wrinkle in Winodows 7 was that two Adobe services have to be disabled or suspended. RS03 Middle tier service and RS03 Server service The second thing I did was to disable my Norton antivirus for one hour. Everything else was shut down. I then installed the update with no problem. However, the update does not fix all the big problems with FM11 book functions. Yes it does print to ps. However, over 1,000 pages print to ps was as unstable as before the update. FrameMaker 11 is a huge step forward in terms of integration with other TCS4, but FrameMaker 11.1must be able to perform its core book functions. Every hardcopy publisher I know must have perfect book print functions. I would also like to make a distinction between crashes, when FM falls over and gives a message and the more dangerous hang where one saves the book and all the files and the blue circles keeps on turning without saving. Our attempts to have a real progress bar have come to naught. So FM11 does not print big books to ps and hangs while saving. Anyone know where are the sample scripts or instructions not in the help file for sure.
I've gotten used to double-clicking in a WinZip window to open files so I never save locally anymore, and just didn't snap that I should do so for an executable... Again, though, Adobe deserves some thanks, both to Kapil Verma, as you mentioned, and also to Vikram in TCS Support who was kind enough to contact me and get me sorted out. Hope you can solve your issues as quickly and easily! Hello Framers, I just downloaded the patch but can't install. Is anything required other than double-clicking AdobePatchInstaller.exe from the zipped download? When I do, I get the usual Run prompts, after which I get an Adobe Application Manager Update Failed window, telling me the Adobe Application Manager may be damaged. So I did as it said, downloaded and installed a new of copy of Adobe Application Manager, rebooted and tried again, same result. FM 11?!
Thanks to Craig Ede for letting us know about this -- has anyone test-driven FM 11 yet? I'm curious to know if it handles conditional text and text insets any better than 9 did. We skipped 10 entirely because we heard it was still buggy -- is FM 11 worth the upgrade? I'm so frustrated by the constant crashes caused by conditional text, I could easily vote to return to MS You-Know-What. FM 11?!
Thanks very much, Rick! Okay, I will do as you suggest and check out the trial version. I should be able to determine fairly quickly whether the conditional text is still the horrendous problem it is in version 9. Thx again, ~~Gay -Original Message- From: Rick Quatro [mailto:r...@rickquatro.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2012 4:20 PM To: Gay Alson; framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: FM 11?! Hi Gay, Performance and stability have been improved with FrameMaker 11, however it is hard to know if your particular issues have been solved. I would suggest that you download and install the trial version and run some of your books or documents through it and see what happens. You can have FrameMaker 11 installed side-by-side with other versions of FrameMaker. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very much. Frame 9 buggy - Frame 10 as bad? Frame 11 on horizon?
Hello Framers, I use conditional text a lot. A LOT. Frame 9 seems to crash on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis. Others in my department haven't experienced this behavior, but don't use conditional text like I do. The .recover files drive me crazy because I always feel I should compare them to the source .fm file, but even FM warns against using .recover files. And of all the times I laboriously made comparisons, I found exactly once when the source doc was missing something in the .recover file. Anyway, I'm not really writing to vent, more to ask if Frame 10 is any better when it comes to conditional text - my brief research leads me to believe 10 fixes a lot of the problems in 9 but introduces new ones. So this may be a case of the known devil... There's a possibility we can upgrade soon, but now I'm wondering if we should wait another year (?) till FM 11. Frankly, I lobbied so long and hard to make the move from Word to FM (7.2) but ever since upgrading to 9, I've regretted it. Parenthetically, we're also curious about the output to various versions of online help in 10. Any opinions or experiences you care to share will be received with interest and thanks. ~~Gay _ Gay Alson Senior Technical Writer Epicor Retail www.epicor.com http://www.epicor.com/ Tel.: (514) 428-2116 Fax: (514) 426-0824 E-mail: gal...@epicor.com mailto:gal...@epicor.com 2800 Trans Canada Highway, Pointe Claire QC H9R 1T1 http://www.epicor.com/Industries/Retail/Documents/printpdfinvitation12. pdf This e-mail is for the use of the intended recipient(s) only. SOLVED: How to display table title in text inset?
Hello again, Framers, I never saw my original question appear in this digest but two kind souls have already responded so apparently some people somewhere received my posting... I want to update this issue and report that MamaRed offered a solution that solved the problem (if not the mystery): She suggested to NOT use the default Reformat using current document's catalogs when I imported my text inset but to select the Retain source's formatting option. Both the host and source docs have identical paragraph and table formats, so I don't know why this worked but it did. Thanks to MamaRed and also to Baruch Brodersen, both of whom offered help (and Baruch also suggested I post this to the list as a Solved issue). How to display table title in text inset?
Happy Monday morning, Framers, I have a .fm source file that I want to use as a text inset. It contains a table with a format in Table Designer defined as Title: Above Title. In Paragraph Designer, the Table Title paragraph tag includes autonumbering. In the source file, the table title appears correctly. That is, I see Table 18: instead of Table 18: Install Options I've imported table formats and paragraph formats from the same template into both the source and the destination files. In the ClipboardFormatsPriorities key, move TEXT from the end to the beginning of the list =TEXT, FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, BMP, MIFW, MIF, RTF, UNICODE TEXT 3. Hi Framers, What on earth have I done? Suddenly single or double quotes in FrameMaker 9 (fully patched) display as question marks. (Only in Frame, not Outlook, Notepad, or Word.) I've been on Windows 7 for awhile now; only thing I've changed recently is to edit maker.ini so Ctrl-V will paste text from Word instead of having it come in as OLE. My co-workers who did the same thing haven't had this substitution and none of my other keys have been remapped. Come to think of it, I also install some new fonts a couple of weeks ago but the timing doesn't indicate a link between that and this problem. Closing and relaunching FM didn't work. I googled some info about keyboard shortcuts stop working and none of the suggestions help (to use the keyboard shortcut to switch languages Left Alt Shift or to change language settings in Control Panel). Does anyone have any experience with this oddity? Of course this had to happen coming up to a deadline :( Thanks for any suggestions, ~~Gay This e-mail is for the use of the intended recipient(s) only. RE: Any way to hide unconditional text?
Hi Roger – What an interesting suggestion. I had never worked with text flows before, but after your e-mail, I created a text flow tag called Metadata containing the four fields I mentioned earlier and I imported only that flow into the “master” file that was designed to display only the metadata info from each text inset file. You’re right – it works! You mentioned putting each text inset file in a different flow, up to 256. But as we may end up with several hundred text inset files over time, it occurred to me to try it the other way ‘round: That is, to see if the main contents of each text inset file could remain in Flow Tag A, with only the four-line metadata in a separate flow. (Which means dealing only with two text flows instead of many.) That’s what I tried and it does work, at least in my first experiments. Can you think of any reason NOT to continue with that? I also wasn’t sure about where to place the new text frame containing the Metadata Flow Tag, so I inserted it in the upper left of my regular Flow A. I had my doubts whether FM would permit a text flow within the frame of the larger Flow A but it seems to be okay. Thank you so much for your creative approach to this – do my changes make sense or might I have paved the way for future problems due to my lack of familiarity with this new feature? Hello Gay Not creative, just a grateful reader of other people's suggestions over the years ;^) I have in fact used the method described in years past, with entirely satisfactory results. Others may chime in with better suggestions or refinements, but what you are doing sounds fine. On a technical point, FrameMaker does not mind where you place your text frame, since it is not in the larger flow A anyway. It *overlies* your flow A when you view your document, but that's just a visual effect caused by the master page design for flow A. If you want, you could modify your flow A master page(s) to accommodate space for your Metadata flow. It's entirely up to you. When you import the contents of a flow into another document as an inset, you can choose to disregard the layout of the imported flow in favour of the layout of the container document (I think that's correct; it's a long time since I used insets). RE: Any way to hide unconditional text?
I don't know if I badly explained my own thinking or if I misunderstood the suggested procedure. When I mentioned a master document, I originally envisioned it as one big doc into which would be imported all text inset files. However, they would NOT be imported to other files FROM this file - this is just a master dump file for the purpose of holding metadata that could be searched when writers want TI files to use. After reading the idea of text flows, I put the four lines of metadata into a separate text frame at the start of the TI template file (from which each TI file will be made) and I named that flow tag Metadata. Then I imported each TI file, one at a time, into the master file and when prompted which text flow tag to import, I selected Metadata. The result was just what I wanted: a .fm file containing ONLY the metadata. I was afraid having the small Metadata text flow frame in the corner of my main Flow Tag A would cause problems and some of your comments seem to bear this out, so I'm experimenting with putting that little text frame in a margin, outside Flow Tag A. So far, it doesn't seem to pose a problem. I still feel that Flow Tag A should be left alone as the container for the main TI file - it's connected so pages continue as they should. Then the few lines of metadata are in a separate area that can be imported into the master (dump) file. It's the only time this text flow will ever be used, and since the text in this small frame has a condition tag applied that is routinely hidden, the real TI file can be edited, imported where needed, etc., with no real change to existing TI functionality. At least, that's my theory! Many thanks - as always - to you folks who so willingly give of your time and ideas. This list is a fantastic resource. ~~Gay From: Fred Ridder [mailto:docu...@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, August 04, 2011 11:50 AM To: Gay Alson; rshuttlewo...@avbasesystems.com Cc: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Any way to hide unconditional text? When you reference a text inset file from a container file, you specify which flow to import from. If all the content chunks are in Flow A, then all you will ever be able to do is include *all* the content chunks each time you do an insert from that TI file. The whole point of putting the content chunks in separate, named flows is to be able to reference them as separate content objects. It doesn't matter if all your meta-data text is in the same flow, because you will never need to insert those chunks individually into another document. -Fred Ridder Click here https://www.mailcontrol.com/sr/wQw0zmjPoHdJTZGyOCrrhg== nT30pPT7jRloRM2HudjY!zhWueCj+bnWY5Fd8GUOJKJHvw== to report this email as spam. Any way to hide unconditional text?
I don't know if I badly explained my own thinking or if I misunderstood the suggested procedure. When I mentioned a "master" document, I originally envisioned it as one big doc into which would be imported all text inset files. However, they would NOT be imported to other files FROM this file - this is just a master dump file for the purpose of holding metadata that could be searched when writers want TI files to use. After reading the idea of text flows, I put the four lines of metadata into a separate text frame at the start of the TI template file (from which each TI file will be made) and I named that flow tag "Metadata". Then I imported each TI file, one at a time, into the "master" file and when prompted which text flow tag to import, I selected "Metadata". Then the few lines of metadata are in a separate area that can be imported into the "master" (dump) file. It's the only time this text flow will ever be used, and since the text in this small frame has a condition tag applied that is routinely hidden, the "real" TI file can be edited, imported where needed, etc., with no real change to existing TI functionality. At least, that's my theory! Many thanks - as always - to you folks who so willingly give of your time and ideas. This list is a fantastic resource. ~~Gay From: Fred Ridder [mailto:docu...@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, August 04, 2011 11:50 AM To: Gay Alson; rshuttleworth at avbasesystems.com Cc: framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Any way to hide unconditional text? Gay Alson wrote: You mentioned putting each text inset file in a different flow, up to 256. But as we may end up with several hundred text inset files over time, it occurred to me to try it the other way 'round: That is, to see if the main contents of each text inset file could remain in Flow Tag A, with only the four-line metadata in a separate flow. (Which means dealing only with two text flows instead of many.) That's what I tried and it does work, at least in my first experiments. Can you think of any reason NOT to continue with that? I also wasn't sure about where to place the new text frame containing the Metadata Flow Tag, so I inserted it in the upper left of my regular Flow A. I had my doubts whether FM would permit a text flow within the frame of the larger Flow A but it seems to be okay. No, this will *not* work for your purposes. When you reference a text inset file from a "container" file, you specify which flow to import from. -Fred Ridder Click here <https://www.mailcontrol.com/sr/wQw0zmjPoHdJTZGyOCrrhg== nT30pPT7jRloRM2HudjY!zhWueCj+bnWY5Fd8GUOJKJHvw==> to report this email as spam. OT: Any opinions on creating online help?
Hello, On Windows 7, FM 9, fully patched, considering upgrading to 10 but nothing imminent. For years we've produced both compressed and uncompressed HTML help, most of it created manually in a good editor. We've purposely stayed away from third-party conversion utilities, mostly so that whenever something breaks, we can fix it ourselves. Now we're thinking of improving our method of help creation/maintenance. Maybe doing something with a knowledge-base - or would structured FM hold more promise? Not much disposable time for steep learning curves... and as always, cost matters. I'm fishing for suggestions, advice, or anything helpful about ... help. RE: OT: Any opinions on creating online help?
Sorry for the omissions and thanks for your response. Our deliverables are a multitude of various end-user docs: User guides, install docs, release notes, you name it. Dozens of documents, updated on a regular basis. We distribute our FM-authored docs in PDF format. Translation is a maybe, up ahead somewhere, not a current consideration. I was aware of RoboHelp and WebWorks, but haven’t got anything on which to base a comparison. And there are probably several other cost-effective alternatives. I contacted the list to see what I could learn from other folks’ experiences. RE: FM9 Crash Conditional Formats
I had this all the time when I had the Conditional Text pod combined with other pods. When I separated them, it stopped crashing. Regards, Shmuel Wolfson I was REALLY hoping this would be the answer I've desperately hoped for! But alas, despite having detached the Conditional Text pod from any other pod, just now I had another crash when I tried to use it. FM9 has successfully trained me to save all open files every few seconds, because I've learned to my sorrow that a crash from trying to use conditional text is inevitable. And between the time lost with those .recover files and the time lost compulsively saving and resaving several open files, the latter is the lesser of two evils. ~~Gay This e-mail is for the use of the intended recipient(s) only. Hi Shlomo, Let me echo Carol's thanks to you. We've been experiencing this irritating bug in 9.0 and had read that we could no longer manually adjust tabs on the ruler but must do so in the Pgf Designer, which was bothersome. Your workaround is a great time-saver. We've tested it several times and it is solid. Now all we have to do is remember to ensure that the Basic tab is active. ;~) Thx, Gay -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-bounces at lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of framers-request at lists.frameusers.com Sent: Monday, April 05, 2010 1:00 PM To: framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: framers Digest, Vol 54, Issue 5 Send framers mailing list submissions to framers at lists.frameusers.com To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to framers-request at lists.frameusers.com You can reach the person managing the list at framers-owner at lists.frameusers.com When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of framers digest..." Neither they nor I have been able to identify any specific sequence that triggers the freeze. However, yours is the first information I've received that suggests a workaround. Like you, I know for sure that it freezes when I'm adjusting tab stops with the ruler. I will pay attention to what set of properties is displayed when the freeze happens. If I can avoid a freeze by keeping Basic properties on top, that would be very helpful. Thanks for the suggestion, Shlomo. Upgrading to FM 9.0 and Word filters
I've been monitoring various threads during FM 9.0's maturation process. Before upgrading, would appreciate advice or comments from the list. In addition to (1) general curiosity as to any compelling reasons to upgrade to 9.0, I am specifically interested in (2) improvements to filters. In 7.2, I wasn't particularly impressed either with saving a .FM file as a Word .doc or with opening a Word .doc in FM. Does 9.0 have improved filters? Upgrading to FM 9.0 and Word filters
I've been monitoring various threads during FM 9.0's maturation process. Before upgrading, would appreciate advice or comments from the list. In addition to (1) general curiosity as to any compelling reasons to upgrade to 9.0, I am specifically interested in (2) improvements to filters. In 7.2, I wasn't particularly impressed either with saving a .FM file as a Word .doc or with opening a Word .doc in FM. Does 9.0 have improved filters?
