Re: Diff Comparison between FrameMaker and Word

2009-03-04 Thread Karen L. Zorn
Are you asking what is different between the Word doc and the Frame doc?
Or, are you asking what is different between English and Japanese
versions? I'm not sure what exactly your translators want to know.

Your Word and Frame docs should have the same content. It's the software
tool and the file formats that are different. Experienced, reputable
translation companies should know how to verify the translation.

 Hi all,

 I have a FrameMaker/Word question. There's a 600-page Word document that my
team converted into a FrameMaker book. This document is in English, it
needs to be translated into Japanese. The translators have asked about tools
to perform a diff comparison between the two (ie find out what is different
 between the two documents).

We have come up with the following options. Can you let me know if there are
 any others?

.Convert both frame files and word file to RTF
 .Use Mif2go
.Export the FM book and Word file to PDF. Perform a PDF comparison.

2009-01-21 Thread Karen L. Zorn
I've been an Adobe user for eons, and granted, the suites are wonderful
opportunities to get related software as excellent prices. BUT, now
Adobe is creating crossover amongst the suites, and I'm not so sure
there a pricing opportunity to be had.

I've been looking at upgrading my CS2 to CS4 and FM7 to TC2, and the new
eLearning Suite is ve tempting, but

Acrobat 9 is in all 3.
Captivate is in TC and eLearning.
Flash in eLearning and CS4.
PhotoShop is in eLearning and CS4.
Dreamweaver is in eLearning and CS4.
The unique s/w in TC is FM and RoboHelp which I need for clients.
In eLearning: Presenter and Soundbooth.
In CS4: InDesign, Illustrator, and Fireworks.

Since I rarely use Illustrator, I probably could just purchase a
standalone copies of Fireworks and InDesign, if that is possible.

Hallo, Verner:

There are several options for doing this.

1. FrameScript (Rick Quatro will surely chime in on this one... :-)
2. Paragraph Tools and Character Tools from Silicon Prairie

3. ToolBox from Systec http://www.systec-gmbh.com/en/sites/toolbox.php

There might be a couple of others, but I have used all three of the ones

Prairie.

Is there a way to update all files in a book with a specific paragraph format?

We have a Para Tag called Revision which marks the revision number in the
footer of the document.

When we go to a new revision, we've bee importing the paragraph format into
each file in the book... thus having to open each file individually and either
change the master page (where the tage is stored) or change the paragraph tag
itself with the correct Rev Number.

Any way to do this for example, like a global property, etc?

Thanks

Chapter 2 is Chapter 10 and so on. I have made sure that each chapter is
numbered correctly under FormatDocumentNumbering, and the chapter numbers
are correct in other places to which they are referred (page numbering that
includes the chapnum, etc.) I am at a loss for other places where this
information might be stored in the document. Any suggestions are welcome!

RE: Acrobat 8 Email-based Reviews

2007-03-01 Thread Karen L. Zorn
I use the email review feature with the STC Phoenix chapter newsletter,
Rough Draft. The first review is named month-commenting.pdf. If we need a
second round, I generate another PDF, then name that file
month-commenting-2.pdf. and send that out. We haven't had any problems and
it works beautifully. BTW this is in Acrobat 7.

Hi all-

This is a tad off-topic but if anyone can answer this, it's you all. Does
anyone use the email-based review feature in Acrobat? If so, how do you send
an updated draft once the first round of comments has been incorporated and
the PDF regenerated? I've R'edTFOH, and of course it's not as helpful as the
name would have you think. Thanks for any help on this -Lin

RE: Hypertext link problems

2006-09-29 Thread Karen L. Zorn
* Does the problem happen in FrameMaker, with Ctrl+Alt+Click, or only in
the PDF? If the hyperlink works correctly in FrameMaker, it's likely a
bug in Acrobat's parsing of the addresses.

Works in FM, not PDF

* Is your Acrobat 7 updated fully? Have you tried with earlier releases
of Reader, like 6, 5, etc?

Running 7.0.8, so fully updated

* Have you tried not making the addresses as hyperlinks in FrameMaker,
and turning on the Acrobat (and Reader) 7.x preference to detect links?
Any difference?

It seems that the email links are the ones that fail. Some work, some don't.
I went into the PDF and checked all converted links, then added the ones
that were missing. Frankly, this is a royal pain. But, if that's what it
takes!

Thanks all for the suggestions and help.

Karyn wrote:
Is there any way to make the two operate independently of one another
while still allowing the layout to utilize the entire width of the page?

You need to distinguish the different numbering styles using Series Labels.
For example, a Numbered format is: S:n+., which results in 1., 2., and so
on. For the alphabetic list s:a+., a., b., c.

Use series labeling for all numbering formats. For example, I use S and s
for numeric and alphabetic lists. T for tables, F for figures.

From FM 7.1 Help:
Series label

Series labels identify different types of autonumber series within the same
text flow. For example, if you want to number figures independently of
tables or headings, you would specify a different series for each. (But each
set of steps, for example, would not be a different series.)

On the other hand, table and figure numbers must all be in the same series
to be based on section numbers.

Unfortunately, the current Help file is of little use. See if you can find
the printed documentation for an older FM version, the explanations are
better. Also, look in Adobe Classroom in a Book, The Complete Reference
FrameMaker 7, or FrameMaker 6, The Master Series.

Most of the styles map fine...in fact, I was surprised at the number that
did. However, there are a few where the style names are either just slightly
off (Warning -> WARNING, Bullet ->Bulleted) or the names must be completely
swapped (Body Indented -> Indented).

Somewhere in my toolbox on my other laptop, I beleieve I have some plugins
that allow styles to be mapped. However, I'm interested in the current state
of the art plugins for this purpose. Anyone have a favorite?

I have a TOC with only 3 headings.

I added a Heading 4 to the other files in the .book. Now I need that to show
up in the TOC.

What I have done:
* Added a "Heading 4TOC" (to match the other 3 levels) in the Paragraph
designer for the TOC.
* Added the layout info to the Reference page.
* Updated the PDF info for the document to say take 4 headings.

I have only done this once before, and that was to a legacy doc with all
sorts of garbage floating about. My memory fails me. This is a clean
template and I don't want to mess things up. I did not create the TOC
layout.

Thanks in advance.

Running H/F Variables, Alternate Values

2006-03-22 Thread Karen L. Zorn
I have two Heading 1 formats in my template: "h1_heading 1" and
"h1np_heading 1 new page." There is need for both formats to avoid over
rides. What is the formula for the Running H/F so it will display the most
recent Heading 1 text. Once, quite a ways back, someone (John Posoda?)
provided the methodology to do this. It has something to do with a character
(command) between the two format names in the Running H/F.

RE: Leader Lines

2006-03-20 Thread Karen L. Zorn
Karyn,

If your TOC template is exactly the way you want it, use the following down
and dirty way to create your TOC with the correct format.

1. Generate the TOC for the document.
2. Save the TOC and close it.
3. Open the TOC template file.
4. File Save As, overwrite TOC generated in step 1.
5. Update the TOC.

Hi All,

I'm drawing a blank and the help system isn't readily giving me the info
I need. I'm sure the info is there, I just can't find it and I'm in a
hurry...

I have a template TOC with leader lines and a tab setting of 6.375. I've
just generated the TOC for a new book but 1) the leader lines aren't there
and 2) the file is ignoring the tab set and putting the page numbers flush
left to the chapter title text. I've imported the template formats into the
new TOC several times but it's not picking up on the leader lines or the tab
stop. (It's getting the font, font size and indent right, but losing the
info about the leader lines and tabs.)

What am I doing wrong? Where are my leader lines? And how can I get them
back either a) automatically or b) manually? Are leader lines set in the
paragraph designer? The format designer? The reference page? (In which case
I'm sunk b/c I don't know diddly about how to set up reference pages.)

I'm on FrameMaker 7.1 with Windows XP and the lone writer in a small shop
with godawful deadlines and a patch due out this week.

Flow Problems

2006-03-20 Thread Karen L. Zorn
I'm designing templates for a new project that have 2 content flows: student
(A), instructor (B). The object is that the instructor content is the left
page, student the right. Before publication, the instructor content is
conditionalized and hidden, then a different master page applied to the even
pages so the resulting student workbook is double sided. Each master page
has a very small (0.017 x 0.017) text frame of the opposite flow in the
upper left corner.

Should work like a charm, I've done it before--not today! When the
transition is made at the bottom of the flow, it seems that a single
character gets hung up in the frame on the wrong page. I can force the text
using "new page" formats, but that will create problems at production. Any
ideas:

TOC Formatting Problem

2006-02-27 Thread Karen L. Zorn
John,

As much as I've tried, the <$chapnum> variable just doesn't want to insert
on the reference page. You have to type it once, then you can copy/paste.

I've copied a chapter title line from one of my reference pages, works every
time. I removed the character that separated the chapter number and the
text. You can use what ever your style guide calls for.

Chapter <$paranumonly> <$paratext>

You don't need to specify the paragraph tag since you set that up when you
first generate the TOC.

The company I work for uses Frame, Interleaf and Word in three separate
offices. (PC version) Management has requested that we create a uniform
style for documentation starting now. They're expecting us to share content
and presumably document templates. In my opinion, all of us should use
Frame, but the Interleaf users have dug in their heels. It's become a
non-constructive us vs. them conflict. As a result, I need to come up with a
list of business reasons why Interleaf is not the correct choice for the
company.

I know of several from prior discussions on the list, but need more.

1. IL to PDF conversions can be less straightforward than Frame to PDF
conversions. Does IL generate bookmarks? 2. Translation memory tools don't
support IL, dramatically increasing costs.

3. Interleaf/Quicksilver/Broadvision corp. is far more likely to end up in
Chapter 11 than Adobe.
4. Frame is more widely used and offers greater compatibility with the rest
of the publishing world.

Does anyone have any additional words of wisdom? Particularly ones that can
have costs assigned to them?

If the methods are

A. Click the B and I buttons, or press Ctrl+B and Ctrl+I.
B. Select Bold and Emphasis from the Character Catalog.
C: Create special character formats with meta-information (purpose or
meaning).

then I use C, although it may appear sometimes that I'm using B. While my
brain was recovering from a bad sector, I named a character format "Bold"
rather than "Strong". I also have some formats that use Italic instead of
Emphasis. The horror, the horror!

As Andrew noted, this may result in more tags or elements. Perhaps this is a
good thing, if it makes us re-examine our typographical conventions.

Or:

C: Create special character formats that indicate the purpose or meaning of
