Welcome to the list! Art is right about generating hits from other
FrameMaker forums, but doing a site-specific search is also useful for

The archive for this list has always been hit-or-miss.

Best bet is to Google, because that would include hits from the other
Frame mailing list at omsys.com (freeFrameers) and the Adobe
User-to-User forum. Both of which you may want to join if you're a new
FM user.

Deirdre,

Rename/backup terrible-looking TOC (just in case).

Close FM

Copy the good-looking TOC file to the folder containing terrible-looking

Rename good-looking TOC file so that the filename is IDENTICAL to the
original terrible-looking TOC (not the backup).

Regenerate.

Look at regenerated TOC. Breathe easier, delete backup.

Hi all:

FM 8.0, Windows XP

*beats weary head against the wall*

I have a template that needs to have the TOC autogenerated.

I autogenerate the TOC, and it looks terrible.

I import formats from a TOC that looks good.

Now, my TOC looks good, except it's drawing its cross-references from
that TOC's book.

The page layout is both 1) giving me the format look I want and 2)
bringing in the other cross-references.

I don't really know how to fix this.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

How FM use impacts purchasing decisions

2008-06-19 Thread McCallister, Michael (GE Healthcare, consultant)

One other possible (untested) solution: Has anyone tried running FM
under OpenSolaris? Conceivably that would work on an Intel/AMD box, and
could also work virtualized under Linux or MacOS.

FM 7.x apparently works reasonably well in Crossover Linux, the
commercial development of Wine:

I'm hearing Parallels and other solutions for Mac are the workaround for
FM dependency; and SPARC+Solaris is the non-PC environment for FM. I
would be fine without the Windows security updates. I keep auto-update
disabled anyway and let my IT guru selectively install the ones that are
truly needed and proven not to be a Pandora's box. (Color me paranoid,
but I once lost too much time with a Windows update that interfered with
stuff right before a deadline.)

How to include font size indicator on formatting toolbar

2008-06-06 Thread McCallister, Michael (GE Healthcare, consultant)
While Syed and Richard are certainly right about applying changes with
the toolbar, there's certainly nothing wrong with having font size
information located at the top of the screen. For me, at least, having a
quick visual cue about this without having to open a Designer window is
a small time (and screen real estate) saver.

EXACTLY and TOTALLY right! Thank you!

In other applications, the use (mostly overuse) of this capability is
one of the things that I find most irritating ... when people mess with
a particular document (Word documents and Powerpoint presentations are
the worst!) and then expect things to NOT get screwed up when the
template is changed or updated or someone applies the template to the
particular file.

In FrameMaker, the ability to create char tags, and apply them to text
as needed, is a VITAL feature to prevent uncontrolled (usually
accidental and unknowing) changes in the look and feel of text unrelated
to what you might be modifying on the screen you are on.

RE: site down

2008-05-05 Thread McCallister, Michael (GE Healthcare, consultant)
Although it would certainly be nice if our hosts would make it easier
with the tools Art mentions, a regular Google site search seems to work
nicely.

This syntax generated 291 hits (though not our most recent discussion):

text inset site:lists.frameusers.com

Archive searching is an add-on option in Mailman.

The code doesn't include a built-in search tool, but the open source
community has provided several patches that create several flavors of
tools -- if they're installed. Other lists use a free Google Group as an
archive, and there are a number of free (and pay) public sites that also
archive lists. The owners of frameusers.com have elected not to use
these options

Cheers,
Art

RE: Learning curve for FrameMaker

Of course, they should. But (tying this to another thread) if
FrameUsers.com ever came back, perhaps we could start a
list-members-only wiki. I mean, who better than us to start such a
thing?

Lester omits to mention what will be known to many here - that the
 Frame
5 manual was the last to be
produced by the tech authors at Frame Corp. I have a copy, and yes, it

is a lot better than the current offering (although I've not seen a
 FrameMaker 8 manual.)

The FrameMaker 8 manual is worse, because there isn't on-- at least, no
hard copy is included or sold separately. Adobe does include a file on
the CD that you can print and bind yourself, but sheesh. It's over 1000
pages and awkward to print and bind in an office. I'm thinking about
sending it off to a POD printer to get a printed/bound copy (split into
two volumes for convenience).

site down

2008-05-01 Thread McCallister, Michael (GE Healthcare, consultant)
I just did this recently, and confirmed it works today:

http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers

It's a web interface to Mailman. The Archives are accessible from here
as well.

Question: with the site down, how does a new user join Frameusers or get
on this list? (I have a friend who's an FDK guru who really needs to
join this group.) I know that there is/was a FAQ on the www site, but
naturally I can't get to it.

FYI -- I know the site was down in Oct / Nov / Dec ... but I didn't
check it weekly, so it may have been back up early this year.

RE: Getting FM to recognize Distiller Joboptions files

Subject: Getting FM to recognize Distiller Joboptions files

Hello all,

I've installed a new joboptions file (capdf8), but I can't get
FrameMaker to recognize it. That is, if I open Distiller 8.1.0, I see
it in the Default Settings pull-down, and if I search my c:\ drive, I
can find it in c:\Documents and Settings\my username\Application
Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\.

But, in FM 7.1b023, if I click Format, Document, PDF setup, it does not
appear in the PDF Job Options pull-down list on the Settings tab in the
PDF Setup dialog (Format, Document, PDF Settings). I did a search of my
c:\ drive for some of the files that do appear in this pull-down list
and found them in c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\.

One curious note: One of the files I see in my PDF Job Options pull-down
list within FM is capdf5, which is what I have been using. When I
searched my c:\ drive for this file, I could not find it.

I thought the solution would be to copy capdf8 from the my username
path to the All Users path, but I got an error message that I Cannot
copy capdf8: Access is denied. I attempted to uncheck the (grayed out)
read-only status of the folders within All Users, but got another error
message saying An error occurred apply attributes to the file: ...
Access is denied..
