FrameMaker's control of bookmark collapse/expand state is not always
consistent.

Other than using add-ons, you can quickly set the bookmark collapse/expand
state in Acrobat by Ctrl-clicking the [-] icon to the left of a bookmark
will collapse *all* subordinate bookmarks (and likewise, Ctrl-cliking the
[+] icon will expand all subordinate bookmarks). Use Save or Save As to
store the bookmark collapse/expand state in the PDF.

FM to pdf-bookmarks expansion

2008-06-12 Thread Radha Padmanabhan
Hi Framers,
FM 7.0 with XP. Acrobat Professional6.0, Distiller6.0
I try to save my FM Book as pdf or print to postscript and then make pdf.
In the pdf settings dialog box, in the 'Bookmarks' tab, I select 'None' for
Bookmarks expanded through level' check box. But still it expands the bookmarks
in the pdf to the last level. It is very strenuous to manually collapse
hunderds of bookmarks. What do I do?

Hi,

  Thanks for the help.

Hi Jim, the link http://www.techknowledgecorp.com/public/word2frame.pdf was a
great help.
Carey, I'm afraid I do not use frame script.

Jerilynne had suggested to convert the Word tables to tab delimited text,
then copy/paste them using the Paste Special Text option. Once the text was
in Frame, highlight the text and convert it to a specific named table based on
the standards for template.

This is feasible for my current situation.

Radha, a search of the archives for this list and other lists that
discuss FM (e.g.,techwr-l and techcommpros) will offer some good advice
for this. O'Keefe and Loring's FrameMaker 7 book discusses the process
and the Table Cleaner plug-in on p. 187. Also, the document at

excellent overview of Word-to-Frame conversion efforts, has a section on
table conversions, and includes a Word macro at the end that can be used

Query on Tables Numbering and List of Tables

2007-02-15 Thread Radha Padmanabhan
Hello,

Am using FrameMaker 7.0 with Windows XP.

Coincidentally my question is also related to numbering and list as it is
with some others in the list now.

I have a big book with 5 Guides which in turn have some 10s of chapters as
.fm files. I have to build a List ot Tables for each guide. My problem is how
to serially number the tables across a specific set of chapters. That is, I
have to serially number the tables from 1 to n in Guide 1, and 1 to m in Guide
2; and build List of Tables for each guide.

As it is now, the tables have 'No Title' for 'Title Position'. They have a
manually set paragraph tag with NO autonumbering :(. I need to number them just
as Table 1: title, Table 2: title, Table 3: title,., no section
number or chapter number attached.

I am reluctant to use TableTitle with T:Table n+: format and use 'Continue
from Previous File in Book' for Paragraph Numbering because I am not sure about
the impact on other paragraphs and the book has more than 60 files. The number
of paragraph tags used is also very large that I cannot manually check for the
nature of autonumbering in each.

I tried to figure out something from FM help but in vain. Please help.

  Thanks
Radha

RE: Query on Tables Numbering and List of Tables

2007-02-15 Thread Radha Padmanabhan
Thanks for all your suggestions.

I think I'll better get to analyse the paragraph formats and use the T:Table
n+ cum 'Continue Paragraph Numbering from Previous File' format.

In addition to the one big book, I do have separate books for each guide to
generate lists. I'll handle the LOT too with this.

As for MIFMuncher, I have downloaded it and shall give it a try shortly.

  Thanks again.

It occurs to me that you seem to be using one FM book file for all five
guides. That's fine -- it makes it easier to do global stuff, like
updating formats, variables, etc., or creating a single PDF. But you
might want to also create an FM book file for each individual guide,
containing only its chapters. Your chapters can live in multiple book
files, and a separate book file for each guide will simplify some
things, such as generating a LOF for each guide (it sounds like that's
what you plan to do).

manually set paragraph tag with NO autonumbering :(. I need to number them just
as Table 1: , Table 2: , Table 3: ,., no section
number or chapter number attached.

I am reluctant to use TableTitle with T:Table : format and use 'Continue
from Previous File in Book' for Paragraph Numbering because I am not sure about
the impact on other paragraphs and the book has more than 60 files. The number
of paragraph tags used is also very large that I cannot manually check for the
nature of autonumbering in each.

I tried to figure out something from FM help but in vain. Please help.

  Thanks
Radha

Query on Tables Numbering and List of Tables

2007-02-15 Thread Radha Padmanabhan
Thanks for all your suggestions.

I think I'll better get to analyse the paragraph formats and use the T:Table
cum 'Continue Paragraph Numbering from Previous File' format.

In addition to the one big book, I do have separate books for each guide to
generate lists. I'll handle the LOT too with this.

As for MIFMuncher, I have downloaded it and shall give it a try shortly.

  Thanks again.

It really shouldn't be all that difficult to determine if there are
autonumbered pgfs that need to restart with each chapter.

HTH!

List of unused User Variables?

2006-11-20 Thread Radha Padmanabhan
Hi,

  FrameMaker 7.0 with Windows XP.

Is it possible to know which already created User Variables are not used in a
document, other than by trial and error method of deleting them?

  Thanks

Can User Variable value be changed at book level?

2006-10-11 Thread Radha Padmanabhan
Hi, Good day.

I use FrameMaker 7.1 with Windows XP.

I have got a FM book with about 50 chapters (files). But they are logically
grouped as 5 guides. All chapters in all guides have footers with Product Name,
Release No. and Date and Guide identification. For each guide, the footer has a
User Variable-DocumentNumebr. Its value is partially different for each guide.
Every time there is a release, the variable value changes. I am having to edit
the master page of each of 50 chapters manually.

Is there a possibility to change the value of the variable from book level
for a range of chapters?

I am a bit apprehensive about using templates (if possible) since the book is
authored by someone else and I do not know the underlying risk. Excuses if this
is a very basic question.

  Thanks
  Radha

Subject: Issue in Optimizing PDF size

Hi,

I use FM 7.1 with Windows XP.

I got a 500 page FM Book with 16 files including TOC and Index. When I
opened it was detected to be of version 5.5. I was also prompted to
Optimize for PDF size during conversion to pdf. But when doing that
(selecting the book), the files to which Links are found are opened. I
press 'OK' to open all the files. But the operation fails telling

[PDFSize] Error: Cannot open file ama-pre.fm.
Error: Cannot open file ama-pre.fm.
[PDFSize] Dumping Error Information

If I Skip this file, same error is displayed for another file.
What is wrong in what I am doing? How do I get the optimization done?
Other than the size of PDF, how does it affect conversion to pdf.

Thanks
Radha
