Re: realistic expectations in Pune, India

2015-04-24 Thread hessiansx4
Good luck! I believe your best bet would be to find an American tech writer
living in Pune, or hire someone in Boston. Plenty of companies parse out tech
writing jobs to off-site writers. If you're concerned about quality, imo, your
US-based team needs to do at least a copy edit!

Hi gang, I have to hire a writer in Pune, India, but I wonder if I have
unrealistic expectations. We have a pretty sophisticated doc system in
unstructured FrameMaker 12, using variables, conditional text, text insets,
etc. We need API content as well as content for network administrators and
managed-service providers, SaaS, and business resiliency. Knowledge of data
storage would be good. The person will work independently, far from the home
team in Boston. The development team in Pune is a good team, but they do all
the things that aggravate writers, making last-minute changes and expecting a
quick search-and-replace, not reviewing docs, etc. The person has to be able
to essentially finish and publish the doc to US standards. My team does not
have the time to edit the work from India. The writer must know the proper use
of articles and placement of commas.
So I am looking for a veteran with good grammar and 10+ years of experience
using all the parts of unstructured FM and with real-life experience pushing
back on a team. I can say all sorts of empowering things from Boston, but if
the writer doesn't feel it in his/her heart, doesn't have the courage and the
chutzpah to stand up to the team to ensure doc quality, then I have the wrong
person and I get stuck with poor-quality documentation.

Am I looking for a chimera? There are plenty of writers like that in the Boston
area, but I need one in Pune. I suspect that TechComm has been a career in
Boston a lot longer than it has in Pune...does anyone there even have ten years
of experience?--

Wow, thanks for the great suggestion (SmartDocs) and other comments. This group

I have been using SmartDocs for several years to manage a set of technical
specifications that have to be produced in Word. It's dead stable and it's
features for managing text snippets and variables are light-years ahead of
Frame's.  My biggest document is about 300 pages and has hundreds of snippets
and SmartDocs has never choked on it - even with multiple conditions applied.
I would never be able to manage this document in FrameMaker - it would be a
nightmare.

Interesting to see that SmartDocs is still around. It even does conditional

License model only, $395-$695/pa, but the cheaper versions look fairly hobbled.

It's easier to avoid that fuss and just called it User Manual.

In German they get around this kind of thing by making compound nouns, so you'd
have the equivalent of Usermanual  (Benutzerhandbuch...?), but English
prefers to leave a space.

Re: FM 12 + RH 11

2014-03-12 Thread hessiansx4
Thanks for your comments, which I will share with my team.

In answer to your questions Robert: we have ATCS 5 (FM 12, RH 11) installed.
I'm working on creating a FM template. We currently output to .pdf (from Word -
ugh) and webhelp (from RH). We'd like to output to responsive html 5 and may,
at some future point, need to create a hardcopy-printable document. I don't
foresee the need to move to structured/DITA anytime soon (within the next 5
years) so with the new output for FM, I think that can suffice for now.

What are you using now? An earlier version of FrameMaker?

FM12 basically has most of RoboHelp folded in so you get two for one.

To see what you'd lose with only RoboHelp, generate a PDF from
RoboHelp and compare it with one saved from FrameMaker. Note that
FrameMaker can save PDF with change markup.

You can get free 30-day evaluations so you'd know exactly what you were buying.

Personally I'd use WebHelp on Apache and Google Analytics rather than
RoboHelp Server to avoid having to deal with a Windows server.

we currently do not have a method for capturing 1) what help pages (this is
not context-sensitive help) users access or 2) whether they are even
accessing the help. It has been suggested that we purchase RH server to
track help file use (vs. using Google analytics). I have used neither. Have

• 1 hour 10 min = How to publish from FM12 to EPUB, HTML5
RESPONSIVE LAYOUT and more
(in answer to many questions, this is FrameMaker 12 by itself, with no
plug-ins, and no assistance from RoboHelp 11 or Tech Comm Suite 5!)

• 1 hour 50 min = MathML equations, including XML code view to edit
• 1 hour 53 min = improved XML white space handling
• 1 hour 57 min = Preview DITAMAP topic content
• 12 min = user interface enhancements
• 25 minutes = Regular Expressions used in Find/Change
(e.g. reverse date format)
• 28 min 44 sec = Generate QR code
• 30 min 28 sec = background color on text level and boxed/colored

complex expressions
• 38 min 44 sec = enhanced Smart Catalogs with search/filter to
narrow choices
• 46 min = improved collaborative workflow with Dropbox integration
and improved PDF review

how does one best respond to a request (read: order) to include something in

I've politely pointed out that industry best practice is to document what IS as

On the other hand, we are all in this together. Products are
designed/created/ tested/documented/marketed/maintained by a TEAM. I was once
tasked with negotiating training costs for a very expensive application simply
because I was a native English speaker. I could have said not my job, but
didn't. And it turned out to be a great learning experience; I had the
opportunity to work with some folks I might otherwise not have had the chance
to. (And I found out I was a decent negotiator!)

I'm really surprised at the overwhelmingly negative reaction to this ad.
Coaching engineers is cited as just one of the responsibilities; without seeing
what the others are, I have no opinion of the ad as a whole, but this specific
responsibility certainly doesn't make me laugh, cringe, fear for my future, or
get defensive about my profession.

I'm asked (yes, often by engineers) language/grammar/writing questions fairly
frequently, and in the past when things weren't so busy, I did the occasional
short presentation on some language/writing issue at the end of a team meeting.
These were well received, and I often got follow-up questions.

The engineers I know are intelligent people who understand the value of
communicating clearly. They want to improve their writing skills in order to
communicate more effectively with each other, managers, and other departments
(sales, support, etc.), as well as with me.

IMHO, sharing what I know with people who see the value of learning it makes me
more valuable. And it's rewarding for me, not cringe-inducing.

adding icon to FM para tag?

2011-08-03 Thread hessiansx4
We're using FM 8 (unstructured). One of the writers is working on a method to
automatically add an icon to Warnings and Notes using a Wingdings-like font. I
think there's another way to handle this but cannot remember the specifics. Any
suggestions for how to do this? btw, we currently use a single tag for both
Head
+ Body.  TIA

warnings, cautions, notes in sw documentation

2011-07-31 Thread hessiansx4
Hello all! I've noticed that the legacy docs I'm currently working on use notes
and warnings (no cautions) for a software product. I asked why a warning was
used instead of a caution and was told: that's the way we do it here. I've only
used warnings when bodily harm could result from some action. How are those of
y'all in the sw world doing it?

document compare

2011-07-20 Thread hessiansx4
I'm using FM 8.0 unstructured, attempting to compare two versions (current and
old) of the same documents. When I run the compare with current as the
baseline, none of the changes to tables are indicated. When I run the compare
using old as the baseline, the changes appear. What am I doing wrong??

Re: So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-03 Thread hessiansx4
We are looking to upgrade 60-70 seats to FM 10; we were quote a per-seat cost
of
925.00 USD. Adobe has a volume licensing program:
http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/volumelicensing/clp/. It'll be interesting to
see how much this reduces the per-seat cost

Sorry: that should have read 'They have $6 *billion* to play with.' Duh.

Yes, I was kidding about Apple buying Adobe. And Steve J is right, there's no
point in ranting about Mac FrameMaker here: that's been done to death
elsewhere.
I do think it was worth making the point about the ungenerous upgrade program,
though, as allegedly folks from Adobe read this group (aside from Dov).

I am very glad that Adobe is developing FrameMaker: for several years after
Adobe acquired it it looked as if it might be left to die.

x-refs in structured FM v7.2

that you must have the source file open vs. having a copy open (someone else
has
the source file open) in order to get the x-ref to stick? Any and all
