RE: Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

IIRC, FM 5.1 was released a scant few days before or after the acquisition.

In fact, sample documents that still ship with FM9 (Report.fm) still say
Terramed enters 1995, which is how I remember the year of acquisition.

I agree with your chronology of official releases, but I'm also
remembering a preview or proof of concept or something similar that
(*I think* -- I didn't record it in my diary) surfaced in the 94-95
time frame. I got a look at it because I was free-lancing for UNIX
World magazine at the time and I'd done a FrameMaker review (on the
Sun 3/60) for them even earlier. If I'm remembering correctly, it was
intended for X Windows to try to move away from OS-specific releases.

There was no official Linux release, the 5.5.6 version _was_ the beta.
Here's a LinuxWorld post about the end of beta testing and the decision
not to release a final product:

 http://www.linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2000-11-28-002-20-NW-SW

You're right about FT being more UNIX-oriented -- that's where FM began.
(I first saw FM on Sun 3/60s about '88 or '89. I thought it had promise,
but wasn't ready to replace the Interleaf software we were using.)

At one time, it ran under SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, IRIX, and who
knows what other flavors. So if by escaped, you mean someone (in or
out of FT/Adobe) hacked a way to run one of those UNIX versions on
Linux, I suppose it's possible... I only know about the 5.5.6 beta.

Sorry to be so argumentative and picky. I've been doing tedious
gruntwork for hours, due to the complete revamping of a product's menu
structure, and it's made me cranky.

Plus, I never lie and I'm always right. ;-)

There was one. V5.2(?). I still have a binary for it. It ran very well under X
and I used it with Windowmaker as well as Gnome.

It was quite good but Adobe decided against proceeding down that route because
there did not appear to be enough money in it for them.

Re: Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Multiple undo is already included in 7.2, bu 7.2 does not accept
unicode, which is almost a must for other languages than English,
German or French (and maybe a couple of other langages).
Better Dita support and a few other things.

Other than the language thing, I too find it hard to justify the cost
to the management. And as we are writing in English only...

As for the other question, some people are using FM 6 today, so FM 7.2
should not be a problem as such in the next few years.

I am waiting for FM for Linux! ;-)

Another way to ask the question is, does anyone have any experience with

Re: Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I think it's worth upgrading before falling off the upgrade path. *If*
in the next version you can only upgrade from 8.0, then you are stuck
using the old version forever unless you want to buy a new version,
which is much more expensive than the upgrade. So every few versions I
think it's worth an upgrade. By the way, I do find it easier to work
with 9.0 than with 7.2.

RE: Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread Alexandra Wilowska
I haven't got as far as FM9, but the upgrade from FM7.2 to FM8 was well
worth it for me because of its support of Boolean operators in condition
expressions. I use conditions a lot and this feature (in conjunction with
FrameScript - the standalone Boolean condition functionality in FM8 isn't
useful enough on its own) simplified my workflow greatly, more than
justifying the upgrade cost. (Plus I happened to coincide with the TCS1
release so upgrading to the suite was a bonus). I haven't yet felt the need
to upgrade further, though.

Amongst other things, the Apply Master Pages thingy is great when you
have a mixture of portrait and landscape pages - makes it simple to
ensure they all stay the right way round. Saved me shedloads of hassle.

Other stuff: spreading it across multiple screens, quicker access to
frequently-used formatting thingies, stickiness in dialogs like x-refs,
and all sorts of things which reduce the number of clicks and
keystrokes.

Re: Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread Art Campbell
Rather than relist what's already been mentioned, I think 9 is more
stable than 7, noticably so in book operations. On my system, I think
it may even be a little quicker. I also like the ability to spread the
interface over two monitors, although I dislike the need to do so.

A big plus is the integration with other programs, particularly
Acrobat for comment and edit management. But I use the other
components of the TCS2 suite too.

Because I elected to skip Vista and XP pales in comparison to W7, if I
were you I'd also be concerned with having an orphan product that
isn't designed for modern OSs. I think most corporate environments
will move to 7 pretty quickly. And although I'm sure 7 would run... I
don't think it would run as well as 9 under W7 and there's a decent
chance that other programs won't interoperate as well as they should.

In my line of work of building catalogs, this upgrade has been a big

However, it does not support spot color or tints even though
documentation suggests otherwise. Oh sure, if I print my own
separations out, but that is not what printers need, they want
composites. I have had two clients upgrade because of the 4-color
support and still they can't do what they want. They assumed, like I,
that 4-color means also spot color and tint. So now I have to listen
to them complain to me. Again when you assume
The PDF creator is also very buggy and can not be trusted when
creating pdfs for print. I still must distill a file and then use
acrobat distiller to get the results I expect and my printer needs.
So I have this iMac that I will continue run Frame 7 on so I can get
true color plates and color support. It sure befuddles me that the
leader in graphic and desktop publishing software can not get
Framemaker right in this regards.

Is there any advantage to upgrade from FM 7.2 to FM 9? I am using
FM9 trial

c0st to my

management.

Another way to ask the question is, does anyone have any experience

Thanks!

Plus, I never lie and I'm always right. ;-)

Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Multiple undo is already included in 7.2, bu 7.2 does not accept
unicode, which is almost a must for other languages than English,
German or French (and maybe a couple of other langages).
Better Dita support and a few other things.

Other than the language thing, I too find it hard to justify the cost
to the management. And as we are writing in English only...

As for the other question, some people are using FM 6 today, so FM 7.2
should not be a problem as such in the next few years.

I am waiting for FM for Linux! ;-)

Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I think it's worth upgrading before falling off the "upgrade path." *If*
in the next version you can only upgrade from 8.0, then you are stuck
using the old version forever unless you want to buy a new version,
which is much more expensive than the upgrade. So every few versions I
think it's worth an upgrade. By the way, I do find it easier to work
with 9.0 than with 7.2.

Amongst other things, the Apply Master Pages thingy is great when you
have a mixture of portrait and landscape pages - makes it simple to
ensure they all stay the right way round. Saved me shedloads of hassle.

Other stuff: spreading it across multiple screens, quicker access to
frequently-used formatting thingies, stickiness in dialogs like x-refs,
and all sorts of things which reduce the number of clicks and
keystrokes.

Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread Scott White
In my line of work of building catalogs, this upgrade has been a big
disappointment. We upgraded for the sole purpose of using 4-color
processing that supposedly this version supported. And it does to some
extent.

Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread Art Campbell
Actually, that was about the point Frame Technology was edging close
to running out of money Adobe bought 'em. I think 5.6 was a FT
remnant, not a path that Adobe started and then backed away from.

Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

2009-09-30 Thread barry.kief...@jeppesen.com
I hope there is!

It took a long time for me to convince my (engineering) manager to upgrade
me from FrameMaker 7.2 (and RoboHelp 6) to Technical Communication Suite
2.

Should have it in a few weeks.

Yup, that was the official release, but there were betas and "escaped"
releases way before then. Frame Tech was more of a UNIX house and the

with any workstation products

So if by "escaped," you mean someone (in or
out of FT/Adobe) hacked a way to run one of those UNIX versions on
Linux, I suppose it's possible... I only know about the 5.5.6 beta.

Sorry to be so argumentative and picky. I've been doing tedious
gruntwork for hours, due to the complete revamping of a product's menu
structure, and it's made me cranky.

Plus, I never lie and I'm always right. ;-)

Is there any advantage to upgrade from FM 7.2 to FM 9? I am using FM9 trial now
and not finding enough improvement in features to justify the c0st to my
management.

Another way to ask the question is, does anyone have any experience with FM 7.2
and compatibility with computer system utilities as time goes by?

Thanks!
