[Frameworks] Linear film editing

2018-11-28 Thread Mary Stark
Dear Frameworks Friends.

I'm interested in 'linear film editing', as in cutting and splicing film at
an edit bench or Steenbeck or however you do it. I'd like to know more
about artist filmmakers who continue to edit film physically whilst also
living in this digital era!

I've attached a questionnaire for folks to fill in if you would be so kind.
Email responses to maryst...@hotmail.co.uk

Warmest wishes,

Mary

[Frameworks] Record release by artist filmmaker Mary Stark

2018-08-04 Thread Mary Stark
I'd like to let frameworkers know about a record that has just been
released relating to a film performance I've been working on for what seems
like aeons of time!

Film as Fabric is the third release in the new Industrial Folklore Tapes
series and is constructed from live recordings of the performance tilted
‘Film as Fabric', which examines relationships between textile practice,
filmmaking and sound. From 2012-2016, my studio practice and numerous
performances took place in Rogue Artist Studios at Crusader Mill in
Manchester, formerly a production site of machinery for the cotton industry
and a garment works. The performance has been enriched by exploration of
Lancashire’s industrial heritage and my family history, which includes
workers in cotton mills and expert needlewomen.

Film as Fabric repeatedly involves sound in physical formats through
optical sound, work song and recordings of weaving machinery on vinyl
records, the amplified mechanisms of the film projector and sewing machine,
and my voice. The performance highlights the now obsolete industrial
practice of linear film editing and shows photochemical film as a
sculptural reflective fabric, measured and worn on the body, cut with
scissors and stitched on the sewing machine. Through the filmmaking
technology of optical sound, fabric and stitch patterns are transformed
into noise, referring to a lesser-known sonic world associated with textile
production. The recordings are of live performances at Full of Noises
Festival 2015, and in 2016 at Islington Mill, Manchester Histories Festival
and Radio Revolten International Festival of Radio Art.

The release is limited to only 250 editions and comprises of a ten inch
record in gatefold sleeve with a twelve page black and white machine sewn
booklet and a 16mm black and white patterned fabric photogram. It is
priced at £15.00 plus shipping.

The Wire magazine recently featured the release in their print issue 414
and shared a video I made at Quarry Bank Mill of industrial textile
machinery that informed the development of the performance

What a surprise! I have never met the man in person but I would have liked
to have met him. His recent call for attention to sexual harassment and

learn more about him and his work, now especially more than ever.

[Frameworks] 16mm Elf Projectors NT-1 series in Berlin or Halle

2016-09-02 Thread Mary Stark
Hello Frameworkers,

In October I will be performing at Radio Revolten International Festival of
Radio Art in Halle, Germany

http://radiorevolten.net/en/

I will be flying to Berlin and then getting a bus to Halle. Does anyone
know of an artist or organisation in that area that might be able to hire
or lend at least one ELF 16mm film projector?

Many thanks,

Mary

[Frameworks] Cassette and Digital Release of Film Performance: Ghosts of Industries Past

2016-08-18 Thread Mary Stark
Hello frameworkers,

Fractal Meat Cuts has recently released a recording of one of my film
performances, a very special one because it was the first time I explored
sound and film performance. Perhaps you were there in the audience?

Summoning Ghosts of Industries Past rouses distant voices and clanking
whirring obsolete machines amongst the dusty rafters and uneven floorboards
of a former cotton mill in the city centre of Manchester. Loops of 16mm
film showing men and women working in textile factories were given a live
soundscape of industrial weaving machinery and songs relating to work with
cloth and thread. Part of the performance involved mixing live with 16mm
film loops of moving images and optical sounds created from fabric, stitch
and thread. In addition to optical sound, the performance repeatedly
emphasised sound as a physical, material format: I sang a Lace Tell and
played the keyboard, as well as playing songs on vinyl records and a dub
plate recording of weaving machinery at Quarry Bank Mill. The event was
hosted by the Manchester based Film Material collective and took place on
26th February 2015.

Fractal Meat Cuts is a label run by Graham Dunning for short run and
handmade releases. Started for self-releases, moving through
collaborations, 2016 marked a move to releasing recordings made by other
artists as well.

This release is available as a limited edition cassette with a digital
download or as a digital download alone. The release includes sound
recordings, photographs and typewritten programme notes giving personal
insight into the performance and the ideas I was interested in exploring.

I hope this message finds you all in the high spirits of summer sunshine.

[Frameworks] Film Performance Event in Toronto at CineCycle Thursday 14th July

2016-07-13 Thread Mary Stark
Mary Stark and David Chatton Barker, artists based in Manchester, UK, are
visiting Toronto. Please join us from 7.30pm for a night of film
performance and sonic spells at the one and only CineCycle, the especially
specially fantastic cinema venue at 129 Spadina Avenue. We'll show
individual and collaborative films and performance works made over the last
two years, as well as fresh from the processing buckets of this year’s
Independent Imaging Retreat, otherwise known as Phil Hoffman’s Film Farm.
It will be a special treat to show some of our work on Martin Heath’s hand
crank 35mm projector which is 104 years old!! All this for just $5.

*More info and links….*

*Mary’s artist filmmaking practice is specifically informed by previous
training in textile practice. Since 2012 Mary has been exploring the
filmstrip as fabric through 16mm film performances with optical sound. Mary
works physically with a deconstructed skeletal frame of cinema, handling
reels of film sculpturally, involving unspooled film projectors to explore
the cinematic apparatus in relation to the human body, light and shadow. In
2014 she undertook an artist residency at LIFT, the Liaison of Independent
Filmmakers of Toronto. Recent shows include Contact Festival of New
Experimental Film and Video in London, UK, and a commissioned cameraless
35mm film in response to the Delia Derbyshire Archive. *

*David works with alchemical processes transmuting the mundane into the
mystical, combining mechanical and natural forms through analogue film,
homemade instruments and performance. Since 2011 David has led the
nationally acclaimed project Folklore Tapes encompassing experimental
music, film and performance. He has curated events and performed at the
Arnolfini Gallery, Café Oto and Spacex Gallery, as well as organizing a
sell-out national tour and programming a storytelling tent at Port Eliot
Festival. Early this year he undertook an international residency on the
island of Oro, Finland, investigating the changing landscape through
filmmaking and performance.*

Re: [Frameworks] 16mm to HD transfer in Leeds / Manchester / York?

2016-04-05 Thread Mary Stark
Hi Amir,

I second Nicky’s iDailies vote, not sure what the North West Film Archive
charge but they don’t really offer a service to artists, they are more
concerned with conservation of films shot in the North West of England.

I have also recently heard of http://www.gaugefilm.co.uk/ who are based in
Birmingham but I have no experience of the quality of their telecine
service.

Good luck!

The instructions say they go out of date after 6 months but I’m just
wondering if anyone has ever tried using out of date E6 chemicals with any
results?

I’m also buying new chemicals but wondering about the other set before I
take it to the safe waste disposal.

I did it with an enlargement lamp set over the synchronizer and a motorized
rewind. I did tests, and alas so will you since there are numerous factors
involved, the brightness of light, the speed of movement, film stock being
used. This is a very complicated process in the beginning but you get good
results for much less than a lab. Its a poor man's way of printing.

One can, at least I have, you need to bi pak raw stock with the film you want

I did it with an enlargement lamp set over the synchronizer and a motorized
rewind. I did tests, and alas so will you since there are numerous factors
involved, the brightness of light, the speed of movement, film stock being
used. This is a very complicated process in the beginning but you get good
results for much less than a lab. Its a poor man's way of printing.

One can, at least I have, you need to bi pak raw stock with the film you want
to print and shine a light on top of the synchronizer in a dark room and try to
smoothly wind the film over the sprockets evenly. It takes practice, etc.

Re: [Frameworks] NEW DIRECTOR NEEDED for Millennium Film Workshop

2015-10-18 Thread mary billyou
very very funny!

a tempest in a teapot.

i doubt that the millenium will find a new director to helm that sinking
boat. unless the culture that surrounds the organization will take care of
itself like corruption does, eventually killing its host.

who would even dare step into the role? and from what i understand, on the
sidelines, that there is absolutely no transparency in the board and that
yes there has been no turnover in any leadership roles in i don't know how
long. not to speak ill of the dead, but apparently millenium's problems
weren't just howards' although he was the familiar scapegoat for many a
filmmaker.

my question is: what happens to all of the equipment in storage? it must be
given to a non-profit, correct? there was a lot of work put in to moving it
all from the mold-infested hole in the lower east side out to bushwick. its
all in good condition. filmmakers want to use it. do we have to start an
entirely new organization and raise the funds to buy the equipment? or will
this too be held for ransom?

[Frameworks] I'm moving my steenbeck: removing screen?

2015-04-27 Thread mary billyou
Hi everyone,

I'm moving my steenbeck from one room to another. Does anyone know how to
remove the screen? I've seen it propped on top of the editing deck before,
when Paul Tomasko was here, but I didn't see how he removed it or put it
back.

I have a call in to him, but he's not answering right now. Just thought I'd
ask if anyone here might know.

All my best,

Mary

Since it was on the lens, it's (possibly) different than removing dirt from

 the shot.

 Rebecca, et. al.,

After re-reading your post, and reading Scott's response, it strikes me that
you may have been looking for information about early (e.g. silent,
primitive?) film systems that involved viewing 16mm film without lens or
projector. Your use of the term installation made me assume expanded
cinema, film installation, etc., but then there's your reference to the
zoetrope, which suggests that you're looking for something further back in
history. Of course, the zoetrope did not use film of any kind. What's more,
16mm film wasn't invented until 1923, by which time projection - with lenses
 - was, of course, standard practice in film exhibition. I'm not aware of any
viewing systems for 16mm that don't employ at least lenses: flatbed editors
don't quite project the images, at least not in the same way a projector
does, and devices like Moviolas and Moviscopes don't involve projection - the
film image is simply magnified into a viewer, not unlike the Kinetsoscope.
But these systems are used to edit film reels, not to show loops. And they
 all use lenses.

Specifying your research project would be helpful - can we have a little more
 detail?
