yes, this map shows how I recall the time zones of these countries.

Sunclock's map has Malaysia coloured like Thailand and the Jawa.

So, as long as nobody knows how to edit the map, it will stay like this
then.

I display the map of the globe. Each time zone gets a colour. The
colours repeat with distance but direct neighbours have always
different colours.

We first would have to get an idea of where to look. When showing the
map, Malaysia should share the colour with China. But it shares its
colour with Thailand an the western part of Indonesia.

Installing packaged firefox wants to install tesseract

2019-10-11 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I just was wondering what this game has to do with the browser:

pkg install firefox says:

New packages to be INSTALLED:
firefox: 69.0.2_1,1
kf5-kholidays: 5.62.0
opencv: 3.4.1_24
tesseract: 4.1.0_3
tesseract-data: 4.0.0
aom: 1.0.0.2474

Is this game really required to run a browser?

Does anybody have an idea what happened?

There are some other applications in the tree which do the same. So,

No, you have to open only one document in one windows. On a machine

The documents are small. Not more than 4KB, plain text, no

Do nothing but continue to open new windows and then open a single
document in them. I change also workspace between.

It just happens when the next window is opened. The text never appears
and the text in most other windows disappears. The windows with text
still visible in them are fully usable. I did not notice any limitations
in them.

When I tried the same thing on a machine with 8GB RAM, nothing
happened. It might will happen too when much more windows are opened.

Most important, on the machine with only 4GB, I can reproduce it 100%.

mousepad memory leak

2018-01-19 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

when I open more than nine or ten mousepads in parallel, I can still
use one or two of the open windows but the other mousepad windows start
to allocate memory until it is exhausted.

I am using FreeBSD 10.4 with mousepad 0.4.0 running under blackbox. It
is easy to reproduce by opening one mousepad window with one document
contained in one.

I am using mousepad on an older machine with only 4GB of RAM. On a

It is only one mousepad process eating up all the memory. It seems to
me random which of the mousepad processes can be used but this one
works normal while other do not react to any event. It stays then like
this until mousepad took all the swap space and RAM. It is not possible
to kill mousepad from blackbox but it is possible to kill mousepad from

I know, it is a minor issue.

I just ran this after removing WRKDIRPREFIX from the environment.
Before I have been able to built firefox without WRKDIRPREFIX in the
same shell. The same error happens in a fresh shell. If it matters, I
believe that 37 was the last version I could built with WRKDIRPREFIX.

I have compiled more than 100 ports these days on the machine. All
others did not have a problem with WRKDIRPREFIX.

make clean differs between machines/jails

2015-06-03 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I just wondered by the same makefile leads to different results. Here
is the output of a 'make clean' from two machines/jails using the same
ports tree:

Outside a jail:

=== Cleaning for libiconv-1.14_8
===  Cleaning for gettext-tools-0.19.4
===  Cleaning for gettext-runtime-0.19.4
===  Cleaning for indexinfo-0.2.3

===  Cleaning for joe-4.0,1

From inside a jail:

Does anybody know why it is like this?

I don't know I can say for sure. But is it possible that the
list outside the jail had not been built/installed before.
Whereas those listed outside the jail, had already been
 built/installed before inside the jail?

Meaning; if the port had already been built/installed before,
it wouldn't show up in the cleaning list.

makes sense. I assume now that a port shows up when its 'work'
directory exists. Do you know more about it?

it is some 50 000 small files.

Problem is how to merge them if we want to.

What we do not want to loose:
 - Easyness of parsing distinfo
 - Easyness to get informations about the description

Could they be put into a single file with a format like:

[/usr/ports/www/firefox]
descr=some text which can span
line
distinfo=SHA256 (firefox-33.0.source.tar.bz2) =

Download does not restart for TeX/texlive-20140525-texmf.tar.xz

Hi,

I have a problem with downloading this file:

http://distcache.FreeBSD.org/ports-distfiles/TeX/texlive-20140525-texmf.tar.xz

It is no problem at all to download the file in one go. As the size of
the file is pretty large, it is difficult for me to do so. After a
download is interrupted, the download restarts at the beginning.

I observed the proper restarting behaviour on other ports.

What could I do to find out why the restarting on this one file does
not work?

It is only almost the same. py27-setuptools27 conflicts with
py27-setuptools (take care of the '27' after setuptools). There had
been a slight change in the near past.

you mean, a new set of glasses are highly recommented? Yes, I agree

For me, it helped to change the origin and update again. Eventually
it is also necessary to delete the old version py27-setuptools before.

I just deleted it and the rest seem to work for the moment.

Re: I want to upgrade an old (8.3-RC2) FReeBSD installation, but can't install subversion

2014-08-28 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I did not got through the full thread to see if you found a solution.

Allow me to tell you how I generally update multiple machines no matter
in what state they are in. If they are all on the same source version,
I compile on one machine the new kernel for the target machine. I will
install it them either via NFS on other machines or via bootable media
on which I copy the newly compiled source tree and the new binaries.

When the other machine is up, I go through the normal installation
procedure for kernel and world. Be careful with mergemaster and do not
overwrite some configuration files.

It might seems awkward but I did not run into any problems since I
moved to this procedure.

You might get first a generic kernel onto an external media and upgrade
to generic if you want before compiling the 'real thing' on the target
machine.

Yes, it is (as a build requisite, but apparently remained
installed on the destination machine), because we need to match
the libraries that the requisites use (Glibmm for one).

I have given up on compiling RawTherapee with clang++ for now,

demanding, especially at higher optimization level, and kills
the 10.0-RELEASE base clang and Port GCC 4.6 and 4.7, all with

not bother to send Gerald the details.

We may want to retry with clang if we've got the next clang

try with something like this in libmap.conf
  libc++.so.1 /usr/local/lib/libc++.so.1
If that fixes the problem, then a rpath with /usr/local/lib
should be set while building the port

Hmm, I am not very familiar with libmapping. After adding it to
  /etc/libmap.conf I get

  #rawtherapee
Shared object /usr/local/lib/libc++.so.1 not found, required by
  rawtherapee

  Thanks for the tip,

  Bapt

try reinstalling devel/libc++ and keeping the libmap.conf entry,
  that should do the trick

as it was a build only dep it may have been removed.
just remove the line from libmap.conf before reinstalling
devel/libc++ and readd it once it is installed.

I commented out libmap.conf entry, reinstalled devel/libc++ and
 readded libmap.conf entry.

After that, I get the same error, when starting rawtherapee.

In a second step I tried to rebuild graphics/rawtherapee with the
entry in /etc/libmap.conf active. That also fails with:

 [..snip..]
 /bin/mkdir -p /usr/ports/graphics/rawtherapee/work/.build
Shared object /usr/local/lib/libc++.so.1 not found, required by
 cmake *** Error code 1
 Stop.
 make[1]: stopped in /usr/ports/graphics/rawtherapee
 *** Error code 1

It looks to me that the entry in libmap.conf is not even needed as
there is a link in /usr/local/lib anyway.

Rawtherapee is a very sensitive program from my point of view. It works
after one update and it crashes after the next. It might also be just
random.

I use portupgrade and make whenever I want. I did not notice any
problems as portupgrade just looks at the installed ports and then
tries them to update via ports or packages. You have to tell
portupgrade what to use.

The main advantage for me is that it continues after errors and prints
a summary at the end. You can then try to fix the problem or wait for a
new ports tree in which the problem might be fixed. Important for me is
that portupgrade never left me with an unusable system. Worst case is
that nothing gets upgraded.

IMHO, it's the only way to reach quality in the port tree with a very

you want to say i.e. all the e-mails regarding the switch to KMS

I agree on some points. However, sometimes users asks why it does not
compile because it can come from their installations. It's quite true,
a port should compile if not it should be marked as BROKEN. I
personally prefer to ask to the list when it does not compiles because
 it can comes from me.

For instance I asked for virtualbox because I didn't see any other
complaint nor PRs and since it compiles from my system and not
poudriere I thought I did something wrong. And for that purpose I
think that we should not spam the GNATS where problems can appear at
 the user side first.

you got the point. We have to assume that a port which is not marked
broken has to work. So, the fault is on our side. Why should we spam
GNATS with our problem?

GNATS for confirmed problems, the list for anything else.

But for me, I often starts my mails by Hello :-).

A Hi should also do the job.

Re: [games/ofortune] CFT and pending issues

2013-12-05 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

On Thu, 5 Dec 2013 22:54:37 +0100
A.J. 'Fonz' van Werven free...@skysmurf.nl wrote:

A short recap for those of you who are subscribed to freebsd-ports@
but not freebsd-stable@: when I opened my inbox this morning I found
a typical WTF thread: the (hardly) offensive fortune cookies have
been kicked out of 10-BETA4. Since I (and many others) find this Just
Plain Stupid (tm) I created a port to bring some sanity back into
 fortune(6).

Anyone running FreeBSD 10-BETA4 feel free to test the port and
comment on it before I file the PR asking for it to be committed.

I just tried. The port does not have any problems for me but fortune
seems to ignore FORTUNE_PATH.

A shar patch can be found here:
 http://www.skysmurf.nl/comp/FreeBSD/files/ofortune.shar

Or alternatively, a tarball can be found in the same place:
 http://www.skysmurf.nl/comp/FreeBSD/files/ofortune.tar.gz

I used this one.

 To extract the shar file:
 # cd /usr/ports/games
 # sh /path/to/shar-file

Or alternatively, to extract the tarball:
 # cd /usr/ports/games
 # tar xzvf /path/to/tarball

Install via your favourite method, e.g.

 # cd /usr/ports/games/ofortune
 # make install

I used the make method.

 or
 # portmaster games/ofortune

 PENDING ISSUES:

 -1-
It's tentatively called ofortune. If you can think of a better name,
 then by all means shoot.

As already said, fortune-offensive sounds better.

 -2-
The accompanying webpage is crap. This is no priority ;-)

I did not check it.

 -3-
I have found the instructions for changing and/or adding to the
fortune files but haven't tested them yet.

One step after another one.

 -4-
I wanted to mark the port as IGNORE for versions of FreeBSD prior to
10-BETA4. But this breaks stuff (see point 6) and I need to know
exactly what the version number (OSVERSION) is for 10-BETA4.

 -5-
Currently the port installs the offensive fortunes into
/usr/local/share/ofortune, requiring every user to add that directory
to their FORTUNE_PATH (hence the pkg-message). I tried adding an
OPTION that would install it into the base /usr/share/games/fortune,
but that again breaks stuff, see point 6.

 -6-
It appears that for some reason conditionals don't work in the
Makefile. For your reference, I have added the Makefile below, with
the parts commented out that I think should work but don't. In both
cases I get Malformed conditional errors. Any thoughts?

I use a very different style in my makefiles and do not see the errors
too.

Thanks for your work.

Any thoughts on how I can make Samba not require 777 on /tmp?

The correct mode for /tmp is probably 1777 anyway. That allows
anyone to create files there, but only they can manipulate them.
  See sticky(7).

The implication of the error messages from portupgrade is that /tmp
is in your PATH, which is pretty unusual. Check your .profile,
login, .cshrc etc. and remove /tmp from any path settings. This is
  indeed a security risk!

Do that, portupgrade will stop complaining, and the correct 1777 (or
  777) setting will keep samba happy.

Yes, I am quite aware of it, but I am merely the messenger. Until

For now, if it is not clear which is closer, you can ping to see
which has the faster response. In my case, us-west is about 20 ms
away while us-east is 100. If you have a well connected server in
another part of the world, I assume the project would be happy to
have another mirror made available. Note that the full repository
is quite large. There are clearly security issues, too.

JFYI, I'm already running ftp/cvsup.ua.freebsd.org (primary Ukrainian
 mirror) for about 8 years.

But the recent changes to policies, which were discussed behind the
closed doors by some group of people in The FreeBSD Project,
effectively makes all efforts, money and so on, which were invested to
support project, unnecessary. Current (semi-official) statements say
that project is going to abandon practice of non-project managed
mirrors and will do everything on it's own.

As for now my mirror serves full CVS[up] repo from SSD, and have full
FTP archive avaliable, which is synced every hour.

You may have read the situation with Australian SVN mirror - when
project officials officially prohibited guys, who set it up to use
 *.freebsd.org name for that.

this all sounds like a inside job to kill FreeBSD.

I just wrote the other message saying that it seems to me that the huge
user base outside the USA is ignored.

What will happen to the project when all non-US servers cannot be used
anymore?

this makes a real difference. The Celeron should not have the GPU integrated.
You have to find out now where the GPU is and of what type it is. Some are

Still, you said before that the other window managers start properly. So, your

I am one step further now. As I am getting errors like this very often since I
use this method of installing ports I thought that there must be something
basic what I am doing wrong.

The cause of the problem happens much earlier. I used PCBSD to get FreeBSD onto
the disk and did then a source upgrade. This went fine. But PCBSD installed
many ports. I assumed now that after deleting them with 'pkg_delete -a' there
are all gone and installation can start.

Of course, pkg_delete brings some error messages that it could not delete this
or that as the package list is wrong.

After getting the errors mentioned here, I used to run 'make deinstall' in the
affected port. This solved the problem. I wonder now what the difference
between pkg_delete and make deinstall is.

As I mentioned before, I am getting these errors randomly since around 2007. I
obviously never used make deinstall then.

I will go back now to the FreeBSD ports installation.

Part of it made it to this thread under a wrong subject line but its a

This is fine, actually. As mentioned, it's not intended for
individuals that want everything handed to them on a silver
platter. Anyone who labels FreeBSD as bad because they aren't
familiar with it is an idiot, IMO. This isn't Microsoft, no
matter how much people might want it to be. And, it never will

really so difficult for people to do? If so, no big deal. The
FreeBSD developers, contributors and maintainers are not here to

  themselves...

how will you ever get newcomers to FreeBSD if not via Linux?

Why should people running Linux switch to FreeBSD?

  This is a dangerous route.

Did you forget how you started with FreeBSD?

We don't need people from Linux to migrate to FreeBSD. There are
plenty of others out there that simply want to try it. Generally,
Linux users are very adamant about it. So, they continue to use it
regardless of what else is out there. Same for Windows and Mac users.
To each their own. If someone feels the need to check it out, the more
the merrier. FreeBSD isn't in the business of sucking people in.
Curiosity alone is enough to keep people using it. Especially when
they find out how solid it is.

As far as how I started using it, this had nothing to do with Linux.
In fact, I used BSD before I even gave Linux a second thought. I was
intrigued with the fact that many large businesses (Including
Microsoft) used FreeBSD as their server OS. The rest is history. I
 began using it - I struggled - I read the Handbook - I asked
questions. That's it. I'm extremely happy I did so and I can't fathom
migrating my production systems to anything else.

You are really working hard to keep the FreeBSD installations
low. It does not help FreeBSD if it is believed to be an elite
  operating system.

Linux is by no way less complex and still many more people us
  it.

  Why?

FreeBSD *IS* an elite operating system. By elite I don't mean
what most people will think I mean. I'm simply stating that it
takes a reasonable amount of time to grow comfortable with it.
Along with any UNIX-like OS. If it were really simple to use,
everyone would be using it, right?

This should not be a reason to make its use more difficult for
  beginners.

What will happen to FreeBSD when there are not beginners anymore?

You cannot ask people to learn first with other operating systems
  and then move to FreeBSD.

At least I can still claim that I learned with BSD at the
university. This is even the main reason for using FreeBSD.

I do not understand why people get pushed away instead of offering
them a helping hand. This is at least what I do whenever possible.

There will always be beginners. People are curious. That's how
everything gets it's start. Well, besides Microsoft who was basically
the only supplier of personal computers in the beginning.

No one is asking anyone to learn something else first. People can
come straight to FreeBSD (or any BSD for that matter) directly out of
the womb. However, expecting hand-holding is something that simply
isn't going to happen. In fact, I've RTFM so many times it makes me
sick. But, that sickness has turned into a love. It's all about
solidity, man! Curiosity kills every cat. :)

There is no reason to assume that people get pushed away from using
FBSD. There are plenty of resources out there where people have gone
above and beyond to help n00bs out. There is how-to for almost
anything! On top of that, the forums and mailing lists are STILL
helping people that refuse to RTFM. There are exponential amounts of
help out there. If people aren't willing to learn, that's where the
 problem ensues.

And Linux, as far as I'm concerned is more complex than FreeBSD.

I would not use the word complex, I use the word chaotic.

   I can agree with chaotic...

Especially it's package management. I don't like the idea of
having no choices when I install an application. Of course, I
  could go WAY out

This depends very much on the distribution.

This even changes very fast from release to release.

The release changes are actually what drive me the most nuts. I can't

It is difficult to know how to respond to these anecdotes -- we don't
know how many and what kind of problems you encountered, what you did

I know. It was always something simple. Like building a port by hand which was
needed by X.

when you performed these builds, and how you went about reporting the
problems -- all of which can make a big difference in the outcome. I
will only say that, apart from occasional disruptions, it is usually
possible now to build commonly-used ports with default options on
amd64 and i386 in controlled builds without incident. And the numbers
from the FreeBSD package-building cluster support this:

I know this. As I said, it was always something very simple.

With regard to your request for a versioned Ports trees -- well, we
have had that for about 18 years, since the Ports tree is kept under
version control in CVS, and you are free to check out snapshots using
anonymous CVS or CVSup -- all you have to do is specify a tag or date

I would not know for what tag I would have to go to solve a specific Problem.

spec, as described in several places -- csup(1), cvs(1), the FreeBSD
Handbook, etc. You can even get per-delta granularity via ctm(1), and
I'd guess that there is a way to do it using rsync, too. And if you
don't like CVS, then you can import the repository into another VCS.

This is a show stopper for a beginner.

So it has always been possible to roll back to earlier versions of the
ports tree without too much trouble. What is more difficult, and what
is unlikely to happen soon, because we don't have enough manpower and
computing resources, is to maintain multiple versions of the tree that
are selectively updated. But I suspect that it would be less trouble

This is not what I am asking. The ports tree should not be maintained.

All I am asking is to make what seems to be 100% in place available to the
beginner via a version number. The beginner can than use this version number to
fall back to something that will work for him.

for you to just work to solve problems with the current Ports tree
than to try to do this yourself.

And you are, of course, free to use FreeBSD with other packaging

They will feel to be free to use Windows.

systems, like pkgsrc. Or to use one of the FreeBSD hybrids produced
by Gentoo, Debian, et al., with their respective packaging systems.
Using FreeBSD does not mean that you have to use FreeBSD Ports,
although this may be a good choice for you.

As far as your example from your other message about having to combine
a png update with work over the course of a weekend -- I don't know
why you would be fooling around with an update of your Ports tree or
your installed ports while working under a tight deadline, but if you
have backups, you should be able to recover from most problems fairly
 quickly.

Because it is written in the handbook?

At least some time ago the handbook stated to update the ports tree before
installing new ports.

The new comer will do this and then get stuck.

Do not forget that I am not talking here for people who know what they are
doing, I am talking about a hurdle newcomers are facing or people who just want
to use a computer as a tool.

forums, mailing lists, FreeBSD Handbook, and many other resources are for.

a person who operated Windows for some years does not see him/herself as a
newcomer but still fails on FreeBSD. The word goes around then that FreeBSD is
bad.

That being said, there is no reason for FreeBSD to be more
user-friendly when it comes to installing older ports. That just
sounds ridiculous in itself. If someone wants to use an older port,
they can download it manually or using something like portdowngrade.
Of course, this becomes a serious security risk (depending on the
port) but FreeBSD will still allow anyone to do this. If this simply
isn't good enough, then perhaps the user should think about trying to
 use a different OS.

You are really working hard to keep the FreeBSD installations low. It does not

individuals that want everything handed to them on a silver platter.
Anyone who labels FreeBSD as bad because they aren't familiar with
it is an idiot, IMO. This isn't Microsoft, no matter how much people

If so, no big deal. The FreeBSD developers, contributors and

how will you ever get newcomers to FreeBSD if not via Linux?

Why should people running Linux switch to FreeBSD?

This is a dangerous route.

FreeBSD *IS* an elite operating system. By elite I don't mean what
most people will think I mean. I'm simply stating that it takes a
reasonable amount of time to grow comfortable with it. Along with any
UNIX-like OS. If it were really simple to use, everyone would be
 using it, right?

This should not be a reason to make its use more difficult for beginners.

What will happen to FreeBSD when there are not beginners anymore?

You cannot ask people to learn first with other operating systems and then move
to FreeBSD.

At least I can still claim that I learned with BSD at the university. This is
even the main reason for using FreeBSD.

I do not understand why people get pushed away instead of offering them a
helping hand. This is at least what I do whenever possible.

And Linux, as far as I'm concerned is more complex than FreeBSD.

I would not use the word complex, I use the word chaotic.

Especially it's package management. I don't like the idea of having no
choices when I install an application. Of course, I could go WAY out

This depends very much on the distribution.

This even changes very fast from release to release.

not easy! Linux is only thought of as easy because of the graphical
installer and the fact that it installs X out of the box. FreeBSD used
to do that, actually. Back in the 4.X days you could choose to install
XFree86 and KDE, Gnome, etc... But, that was a waste of valuable disk
 space in the long run.

How big is X and how big is a DVD? Why is it possible for others to pack it

I did not even notice that X is not part of the installation media any more as
I always try to install the ports from the current ports tree.

I have experienced the same exact problem when contacting various

Yes, but:

You are moving the cost from you to the the hosting companies. If more people
use packages, they will need more capacity to supply all the different variants.

Does anybody know what takes more capacity? The sources or the binaries? I
would believe that the sources would take more space and bandwidth but the
different variants of the binaries could be much bigger at the end.

I remember some articles about the electricity bill Google gets every month. It
is not that low.

So, to paint a more complete picture, we must see both sides of the fence.

To make matters worse, people like me do both. I upgrade via the packages and
then compile while I am already able to work with the new ports. At least, if
the packages worked.

At the end, we who want to go green have to stop using the Internet and go back
to postal services as it costs less energy.

do not even ask this question if you have a working system.

I realised this problem by luck when I tried to update a single
program which is affected by this. After seeing how many ports
depend on this, I decided to keep my system as it is and wait

I will then do a full upgrade.

I think that you hit the weakest point of FreeBSD. When a version
number of a base port changes, hundreds or even thousands of
ports have to be recompiled. It is basically the same effect as
when the major version number of FreeBSD changes.

If this would be synchronised with the main FreeBSD releases, it

You went really deep into the system to do a simple things which
should have been done by the ports system.

The kde disaster is still grinding, but I have high hopes.

Stay with 3.x.

If this would be synchronised with the main FreeBSD releases,
it would have a minor effect on users.

Was it 6.0 when they upgraded Xorg just after the release? You
might as well have used the ports tree disc as a coaster.

If synchronised, this would not happen. But do not forget, X is an
external project. So, things can only be delayed with the freeze
but not be accelerated.

I think that the ports tree is pretty good but once in a while it
really hits you.

So, why is there a ports freeze just before a new release?

Isn't it done just out of the same reason?

They want to have a stable ports tree on the day of the
  release.

Yes, and for building a stable subset of packages beforehand to
ship with the release. But these freezes are considered to be
a necessary evil, to be removed as soon as possible, and not
something that should be in place from release to release. The
current version of the Ports tree is supposed to be the leading
 edge of (downstream) development.

You misunderstand me. I do not want a freeze of the ports tree, I
only recommend, to either delay an update of a base port to the
next freeze or put a short freeze around during which only ports
are updated which got screwed by the change.

If I want a freeze to 'my' ports tree, I keep the one from the
last release.

Re: after update - not all jpeg files are displayable

2009-07-29 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I do not know if this will help here.

I have had in the past a very different problem which seems
unsolvable.

I did the same as you using portupgrade to bring my system to the
current status. It broke some things.

By change, I got the problem solve by manually compiling some
ports and reinstalling them.

Check what ports are needed by your program. Start at the base
reinstalling them manually.

I did this just by chance and found my system working afterwards.

Yes, I know, it is a lot of work if you cannot do it on the side.

I now did this - it has not fixed the problem. gqview for

I do not even have any libjpeg.so.9 on my system (removed my
 whole lib/compat/pkg directory)

Xorg 7.4, hald dbus when upgrading via packages

2009-06-22 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

with reference to this

http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=694

I have a machine which got upgraded since the FreeBSD 6.1 days to
6.4 via the ports and never got XOrg 7.4 running because i never
got hald and dbus properly installed.

Just by chance, I saw that both hald and dbus are not put into
place.

After compiling the respective ports by hand, deinstalling the
packages and reinstalling the ports, hald and dbus appeared to be
in the proper place and working.

Since then, I have Xorg 7.4 working with hal support.

I log on via a console as root and start X with KDE als the desktop.

All should be done then by KDE.

I can't remember if KDE asks then some questions or simply creates all
what is needed with default values.

KDE is not my desktop, I use just konqueror once in a while.
