Samba and FAM
I have been using Samba 3.x for my Windows file share and printing. I chose not to use FAM as the implementation on FreeBSD seems non-existant (where is the daemon?). Problems with phpMyAdmin ...
Recently, I pulled down the current ports on my 6.0-RELEASE system and ran portupgrade (-Ra). Everything works fabulously except for phpMyAdmin. Other PHP (5.1.1) applications work just fine, including postfixadmin and others. With phpMyAdmin (2.7.0p2 and all previous versions that I have attempted manually) I simply get a empty page. If I run it through Squid, I get the following. "The following error was encountered: * * Zero Sized Reply * Squid did not receive any data for this request." I have checked my Apache (2.0) error logs and find no errors at all. This problem is unique to phpMyAdmin and I am truly stumped. I have been through all of the documentation and I have searched Google for hours. I have found MANY reports of this same issue, but none have found the cause (some wiped everything and reinstalled with success, but that is not an option). Re: How do I max a 6Mbps link
The problem is probably file I/O. I use samba for use with Windows. I can transfer a large file from my FreeBSD server and get almost 10MB/s (using an Intel 10/100 card). However, when I transfer files to FreeBSD, I only get about 6MB/s. I seem to get this same ratio when using FTP transfers as well. This leads me to believe it is I/O bound (my FreeBSD machine has a UDMA66, mainboard limitted to UDMA33, 7200RPM drive in it running softupdates). BTW -- this is one area where Linux (w / reiserfs) kicks the FreeBSD daemon all over town. Problem with USB ulpt0 and CUPS
I posted this in April and received no response. However, this has been an ongoing issue since at least 2001 (where I found the first reference to this trouble via Google). The problem seems to be that the FreeBSD USB LPT driver (even with no-reset) is somehow dropping the first bits of the data stream, causing a page full of trash to be printed prior to the actual print job. I have no verified this problem with 5.1-RELEASE as well. I have a machine that has been serving as a print server. That machine was running CUPS and SAMBA over Linux. Now, it is running FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE-p7 with CUPS and SAMBA. I have a Lexmark Optra 312 laser printer hooked up to the usb port, ulpt0 (no reset). When it was running linux, everything ran perfectly. I allow the Windows client machines to use their print drivers and send a raw stream through samba to cups for printing. This configuration has worked fine. However, for reasons of my own, I have put FreeBSD 5.0 on this machine. The same software configuration exists for printing. Now, when I print most pages, I get an extra page prefixing the job with two or three lines of printer commands (i.e. resolution = 600, @PCL, etc). This seems to be caused by the FreeBSD usb printer driver dropping a couple of characters at the beginning of the command stream. This used to happen to me with FreeBSD 4.6 as well, which is why that machine was running Linux in the first place. Has anybody seen this strange behavior and is there a known fix for it? It is clear that the graphic accelleration provided by my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro video card is not being used. I found a site that had drivers apparently for FreeBSD, but it didn't seem to work. I am running FreeBSD 5.1. Are there adequate drivers out there to support this? Re: 5.1 on a 386
I recall conversation in current about dropping i386 support. Still, the kernel config files back me up. In GENERIC of the 4.x series machine i386 cpu I386_CPU cpu I486_CPU cpu I586_CPU cpu I686_CPU ident GENERIC In GENERIC of the 5.x series machine i386 cpu I486_CPU cpu I586_CPU cpu I686_CPU ident GENERIC And I find this in NOTES # # You must specify at least one CPU (the one you intend to run on); # deleting the specification for CPUs you don't need to use may make # parts of the system run faster. # I386_CPU is mutually exclusive with the other CPU types. # #cpuI386_CPU cpu I486_CPU cpu I586_CPU# aka Pentium(tm) cpu I686_CPU# aka Pentium Pro(tm) So, support is there, but I wonder how much. I could be wrong, but I thought that they finally gave up on 386 support and now the base minimum is 486. Re: Upgrading 5.0 -> 5.1
You will need a whole new world as well. cvsup (cd /usr/src && make world) (cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf && config GENERIC && cd ../compile/GENERIC && make all install) reboot Approximately. I guess there is a way to make the kernel from the top level tree, but I have always done it that above way and don't plan to change unless I must. Sound Blaster Live DD5.1
I have recently purchased a Dell Dimension 8250 which contains a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! DD 5.1 card. My previous SoundBlaster Live! card was detected in FreeBSD 4.7, but this one is not detected in this machine using FreeBSD 5.1 RELEASE (cvsup to it). No pcm devices show during boot. Is there a way to give the kernel a hint? There is no way to shut of PNP in the BIOS, as Dell as not added this option. Re: php4 apache 2
If you build mod_php4 and choose imap-ssl and you have not yet built the imap client library (cclient), it will build it as a dependency, but it will not build it with ssl support and thus it will fail. Re: MySQL or Postgresql on FreeBSD, have I just started a holy war?
I am a Postgresql person myself. I can say there is one bad thing about Postgres that might be annoying to some. When data is deleted, the disk space is not recovered until a manual "vacuum" takes place. On a high load system with many updates or deletes, this could be a real headache. A cron job would probably fill role nicely.
