Hi, I want my laptop to shutdown when the battery is critical low, but the ACPI Battery info warning only comes on at a battery level of 10, but I just noticed that the kernel logs: kernel: battery0: critically low charge! ..this happens at battery "life" 7. Better point of shutting down, this will give me at least 10 minutes more ;-) How can I catch this in the devd.conf? My current catch of the battery notifications looks like this (and it works nicely, but in my point of view, too early): notify 10 { match "system" "ACPI"; match "subsystem" "CMBAT"; action "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/battery"; }; Of course, I could make a loop in the "battery" shell script to catch it from the "sysctl -n hw.acpi.battery.life" ;-), but if I can get the kernel "critically low charge", I think that's better. Keyboard without Scroll Lock
Hi, I don't know where to post this, except from this list, so maybe someone will add it to a FAQ ;-). just for info, if you happens to buy a keyboard without the Scroll Lock key, as I did (Logitech EX110), and are missing this function in consoles, I found a solution with re-configuring the keymap (I'm probably not the first, but did not find a short solution on the web). As root: Dump the keyboard map to a file kbdcontrol -d >mykeys Change the file so "Ctrl+NumLock" will set "Scroll Lock". Find line with scancode "base" 069, or where "nlock" fills the entire line. Edit column 3 from "nlock" to "slock" The line now looks like: "069 nlock nlock slock nlock nlock nlock nlock nlock O" Edit /etc/rc.conf: keymap="/home/xxx/mykeys" #where the file is Reboot, and now "Ctrl+NumLock" will toggle the Scroll Lock bit. Before you reboot it is possible to try if it works. As root, issue the command: kbdcontrol -l mykeys -- Mvh/Brgds Harry FreeBSD mugin.localhost 7.0-CURRENT #8: i386 ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

hi guys, i've tried a couple suggestions, but nothing is working for me. here is a few things from the console that might be helpful. no xwindows on this machine, it's just a base freebsd network install with only the necessary packages installed to do the audio stuff it needs to do. radio# mixer Mixer vol is currently set to 100:100 Mixer pcm is currently set to 0:0 Mixer speaker is currently set to 75:75 Mixer mic is currently set to 0:0 Mixer cd is currently set to 75:75 Mixer rec is currently set to 7:7 Recording source: mic radio# uname -a FreeBSD radio 6.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE #0: Fri Jan 12 11:05:30 UTC 2007 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/SMP i386 when i issue /etc/rc.d/mixer stop then reboot, the mixer shows set to 7:7, but then it still clips like it does on 90. then i set mixer to 7 and it says setting mixer fro 90 to 7. i am thinking that /etc/rc.d/mixer gets invoked before kldload loads the driver because both dmesg and mixer tell me there is no mixer device till the machine is up for around 2 minutes. maybe i will try the hda enable in rc.conf, but it doesn't seem ac97 on unix is as well supported as the windows drivers so i need the particular driver i downloaded (i might be wrong). cheers, harry On 9/18/07, Mel < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > On Monday 17 September 2007 22:21:54 Rob wrote: > > Harry Doyle wrote: > > > however whenever i reboot the machine the mixer command always shows > the > > > default level of 90 which clips pretty hard. > > > > My 6.2 system saves and restores the mixer settings across boots. > > Apparently in the file /var/db/mixer0-state However, the file is root > > owned and 644; perhaps if you create the file and chmod it writable, > your > > settings will stick? > > Nope. mixer levels on boot
hello everyone, i am running a freebsd server to stream my local campus station's radio broadcast to the net. i am using the stock ac97 audio, and using a little script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d which uses kldload to load the driver. i have to issue mixer rec -83 to get the audio down to a decent level (very hot coming out of the mixer but i can't change that for other reasons). i have tried to script this mixer command into startup by putting a sleep command and then the mixer command, and also by using the /boot/boot.hints file. however whenever i reboot the machine the mixer command always shows the default level of 90 which clips pretty hard. also, the sound driver doesn't seem to load until around 2 minutes after i can log into a fresh boot (not a problem, just some extra info). how can i script my default rec level on boot? thanks, harry ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

FreeBSD 4TB Raid Setup
Hi, I have a problem I've been pulling my hair out over the past few days. I'm building a server that's going to house a very large database. For it, I've build a RAID 5 with 4TB of space (3.5TB usable). It's running on an HighPoint RocketRAID 1820A 8-channel SATA Controller. Since this is for a database, it's most likely going to be a few very large files, so splitting up the partition to multiple mounts isn't an option for me. When FreeBSD boots up, dmesg shows the card detected correctly, and all channels started successfully. However when it actually loads it into the device, it shows: da0: 1241428MB (2542444544 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 158259C) That equates to about 1.1TB, rather than the 3.5TB the controller bios shows as usable space. The motherboard on this server is an Asus P5M2 serverboard, which can easily handle 4TB, if that's even a concern at all. Regardless of this note on boot, I've still gone ahead and configured GPT to see, and when mounted, df -h reports 1.1TB as well. I've heard of FreeBSD servers handling multiple-terabytes without issue, and 1.1 seems to be an odd number to truncate on. I'm very devoted to FreeBSD and would very much like to figure out how to make this work, however as time is important, if I can't resolve this I'll be forced to look into alternative OS choices. As of now, I can't find much information online pertaining to my specific issue, and I'm out of ideas myself. Thank you for your time (and replies). :) -- -Harry Maugans http://www.desktopnexus.com Join the wallpaper revolution! ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

At the same time symbolic links are made from the files in this new directery to a directery called 'latest'. ..and for each subscription there is a directory with same name as the subscription. In this directery GoldenPod also will make a symbolic link to the date directory files which belongs to this subscription. GoldenPod has some kind of graphic configuration, but I have never used it. GoldenPod is commandline driven. Check http://goldenpod.nongnu.org/ where you also will find the man page. How to show the options screen again
Hi, I just tried to install the pilot-link with "portmanager palm/pilot-link", and with first run I got an options screen, one of the options was libusb, which I selected "on". libusb failed, and now I tried a second run, the intention then was to select libusb "off", but I did not get the options screen this time. I already tried "make clean", but without success. How can I force the options screen to show up again, with portmanager or make? Thank you in advance.. For base system installation you have to download disk1 which now (starting with the 5.4-RELEASE) includes the fixit-CD. If you want to do a very lean installation over the network (ftp, http, NFS or AFS) you can download the boot-only iso. That's just for booting the FreeBSD installation routine, every tarball has to be downloaded vi network (or copied from another filesystem within the installer). Formerly there was a mini-inst.iso which was only the installer with the base system without any packages, I haven't investigated the new layout, so I guess that disc one has the fixit (live filesystem) and some packages in addition to the mini-inst.iso -Mano > Thanks for your patience and for reading this. > > Ricardo, > ___ > freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions > To unsubscribe, send any mail to > "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Questions about FreeBSD Versions
Hello FreeBSD, My name is Harry Leonard and I'm very interested in using FreeBSD. I work in a small shop, outside of Flagstaff, Arizona for the State of Arizona, in a half Microsoft, half open source environment. I'm the resident programmer and I've used Perl/PHP/MySQL here for almost four years. My boss has set up servers running OpenBSD and I get to use them creating our website and running intranet applications. My problem now is that my boss is in Iraq and we're in need of a new server or two. I've researched the subject and have found myself getting a little squeamish with the thought of installing/tweaking an OpenBSD box. FreeBSD seemed like the next viable option and I did get a thumbs up from my boss. I also saw a segment on TechTv's Screen Savers which gave me the confidence that I could pull this off. I started looking at versions and decided to purchase the latest and greatest. I bought the four disk set of FreeBSD 5.0 w/ the handbook and thought I was on a roll. Surely, I installed it several times before I got it right and then I began to run into problems and loose some confidence. My problems started with the installation of Apache. I'm going back after it today though and I hope that I'll have some success. Yes, I am a newbie but a driven one. I very much want to have two FreeBSD boxes in-house and I am a hard one to quit. I did quit on FreeBSD 5.0 though and I also think this is where my troubles really began. I figured that I would do some more reading and found that 5.0 might not be the best version for newbie's (in cases of trouble). So, I figured that I would go to FreeBSD 5.1. A newer version shouldn't hurt huh? Well, I think something went awry in the download and I never got this version to work correctly for me either. Well, now I'm figuring that I'll just move backwards to FreeBSD 4.8 Stable and this will just alleviate all my problems. This has not worked yet for me either and my confidence is further eroding. But, my tenacity is still in there and I'd rather go down in flames than let my office mate turn this office into a full Microsoft shop and me running Apache/PHP/MySQL on an IIS box. My boss expressed his dismay of this happening and I told him I would not let him down. Newbie I may be but I'm not a quitter. This email is about: Which version of FreeBSD should I be using for production? I need to set up an in-house web server for our website and another box for my few intranet applications. In the near future I might have the opportunity to create a firewall box and I really need to get on top of things. Today, I'll go back to FreeBSD 5.0 (which I've had the most success with) and read the errata over again and make sure there's nothing that I'm missing. I'd appreciate it if you could give me a stamp of approval on which version I can/should use for my small production needs. Sorry, if I've gotten a little windy with my explanation but I wanted to give you some background. I also Thank You for reading this email and for any help that you can provide me in this matter. Installation
After installing FreeBSD 4.8 into an unpartitioned free-space, it states that the installation was successful, but when I start the computer and press F3 to load FreeBSD instead of NT 4, it finally wants me to enter my user name and password. After doing so, it displays a "$" sign and a blinking space which waits for me to enter a command, but I have no clue what it wants me to enter. If I enter / is states "permission is denied." Installation instructions state "always restore the BIOS to natural drive numbering before installing FreeFSD..." Will you please tell me how to do that? I can't find a clue in BIOS Setup or in Windows. Could that have anything to do with my problem getting FreeBSD to load? I installed it from a CD-ROM I bought. I've spent two days re-installing it several times and trying different things. I have read part of the FreeBSD Handbook about installation. On a previous installation, it stated "WARNING: / was not properly dismounted," but my recent installation gave no such warning or error messages. Installing FreeBSD is very frustrating. I'm trying to find a good, cheap OS as an alternative to buying a new Apple with OS X Jaguar, or upgrading my NT 4 to Windows 2000. I thought FreeBSD might be the solution after reading about it, but it doesn't work. If I have trouble installing an OS, it isn't my fault. I can follow explicit instructions. I have installed Windows NT 4 many times, and it works even though it didn't come with explicit instructions either. I have installed Red Hat Linux 7.2 several times. It installs easy from CD-ROM, but won't run my printer, and won't access the internet without great difficulty, then it won't access any URL. Subject: Re: Bystander shot by a spam filter. Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2002 09:19:32 -0600 (CST) From: Chuck Rock <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Harry Tabak <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] There's not much you can do but what you already are doing. Complain. You complain to the people using the software, and if they can't configure it, they will probably stop using it if they care. I know only one user, that is how I discovered the problem. I have no way of identifying other users. That frightens me. You complain to the people that actually wrote the software. Usually found in the source code and such. Unfortunately, the author hasn't replied to my complaints yet. Possibly she has taken a holiday. You can try to complain to FreeBSD Ports, but removing this goes against the very nature of "Open Source" Good or bad, there's not much to convince people not to distribute a piece of software that's free and open. There is a significant difference between this port and the others. My other ports at worst only harm the intended user when things go wrong. This port harms random and anonymous individuals. I don't believe that FreeBSD redistributes spamming software or list managers that don't provide the proper opt-in safeguards by default. I can't really stop the Spambouncer people from shouting "fire" from their own website -- freedom of speech and all that. But should FreeBSD act as an amplifier. Everyone knows when they install these softwares that you do so at your own risk. If your ISP is spending money to support problems caused by it's use and they have control over it, they will probably stop using it. Most ISP's care about expenses, so you can bet if it's not worth using, they will eventually stop. If you have any capacity, you can attempt to fix the program, and submit it to the author for distribution. This is how Open Source works. I will be happy to fix it, the author may not like my philosophy. I believe in Free Speech and a working internet mail system. I would attempt to minimize "false positives", and require testing. But as I said earlier, the author doesn't respond. Even if the software is adjusted, it will be impossible to recall all the older versions. If people would stop sending spam or harden their computers connected to the Internet to keep from sending spam accidentally, there would be no need for this software either. Might as well wish for world peace though. amen. Unfortuately, good people are making a bad situation even worse by "hip-shooting". Mail sent from my main server, gatehouse.quadtelecom.com (66.45.116.138) gets rejected. _450_Client_host_rejected:_cannot_find_your_hostname,_[66.45.116.138] What are the rules for sending mail! I'm not a spammer -- I've never sent spam!!! Your rejection is very disconcerting. Bystander shot by a spam filter.
[This is a resend. Ironically, the orignal was blocked by FreeBSD's spam filter, I've had to send this from another account] I am not sure which list is best for this issue, hence the cross posting. I believe spam and anti-spam measures are security issues -- the 'Availability' part of C-I-A. I apologize if I am wrong. A FreeBSD ported package is contributing to an internet service availability problem that has me stumped. I believe that an unknowable quantity of other internet denizens are also affected. I'm a long time fan of FreeBSD -- I run it on my small mail server and I've recommended it for many applications. I even bought a CD once. I write this missive with great reluctance. I've worked with a lot of strange software over the years, But this is a new first -- Software that slanders! Software that publicly called me a spammer!!! And not to my face, but to business associate. And then took action. I recently discovered, and quite by accident, that a FreeBSD ported package -- spambnc (aka Spambouncer or SB) -- was blocking mail from me to an unknown number of businesses and individuals on the internet. I'll probably never have to correspond with most of these people, but I'm a freelancer -- this may have already cost me a job. [Dear reader, don't be surprised if you or your clients are also blocked. I strongly suggest that you check it out.] Anti-spam products have a valuable place in the security arsenal. But, IMHO, this product is dangerous because it includes filters and rules that are overreaching, and inaccurate. Bad firewall rules and bad anti-spam rules may be OK for an individual site. However, spambnc's bad advice is being mass marketed through the good offices of FreeBSD, and it is putting potholes in the net for the rest of us. Until it is fixed, and proven harmless, FreeBSD should stop distributing this product. Basically, the default built-in policies for blocking mail aren't fully described, and there is no mechanism to universally correct the inevitable mistakes in a timely manner. Users (people who install this product) are mislead about the probably of filtering the wrong mail. I am sure that the software was developed with the very best intentions, but in its zeal to block lots and lots of spam, SB is hurting good people. The SB rule blocking my mail host has nothing to do with me. Even though, it can use dynamic anti-spam DNS services, SB hard codes its rules for filtering bad domains by name and by IP address. My nemisis is buried in a 1476 line file, sb-blockdomains.rc, which installs by default, and is not documented outside the code. Along with others, it blocks the entire 66.45.0.0/17 space because spammers might live there. This is sort of like a corporate mail room throwing away all NJ postmarked mail because of the bulk mail distribution centers in Secaucus. My mail host address gets a clean bill of health from every anti-spam site that I can find, such as SPEWS. I've checked at least 30 of them. My tiny x/29 block is sub-allocated from my DSL provider's x/23 block. The DSL provider's block is a sub-allocation from Inflow.com's 66.45.0.0/17 block. Spambouncer doesn't like Inflow. While they have a right to their opinions, they don't have a right to publicly tar me because of my neighbors. If I read sb-blockdomains # comments correctly, it is policy to not only block known spammers, but to ALSO block entire networks based on their handling of spam complaints. This is like as a business receptionist checking callerID and then ignoring incoming calls from Verizon subscribers because Verizon tolerates (and probably invented) telemarketing. I have written to both the Spambouncer contact address <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and the FreeBSD maintainer, but without a response. Possibly they are on holiday, or spambouncer is eating my mail. Perhaps I'm just too impatient. I have also contacted my ISP's support. They don't know how to help me. They vouch for Inflow. They don't recommend it, but for a fee, my service could be switched to a different PVC, and I'd get an address from a different carrier. But of course, the new address could be black-listed on a whim. Regardless, I assume that these are reasonable people, and that they will oil the squeaky wheel as soon as it is convenient. But how will I ever know that EVERY copy of spambouncer has been fixed? What about other innocent ISP subscribers who are also black-listed? Harry Tabak QUAD TELECOM, INC. Private Home network
I have small network at home consisting of three machines. These machines are connected through a router to a cable modem where they share the internet. My router assigns by dhcp ip numbers in the range of 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.l00. The router does NAT for my other computers. I do not have an official registered domain. My windows machines boot up and operate on the internet without complication. Is there any way that I can get my FreeBSD machine to due the same? My FreeBSD machine will get a valid ip assignment. It is not be able to get external DNS translations and Sendmail chokes. To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
