Hi all, (My mailserver is currently offline and this address is not subscribed, please cc me in all replies, thanks) I'm waiting for my new internet connection to be setup here, and in the meantime I'm starting to configure my network accordingly. I'm going to have a static IP - say xx.xx.yy.zz - and a subnet as follows: xx.xx.xx.zz/28 My plan is to run a FreeBSD router to have the subnet routed through the static IP. I've already got the static routes I need to add figured out. I still have some questions at this point (this setup is new to me): 1. Do I need to inform the ISP of my intentions so that people can actually connect to an IP which is part of my subnet, but behind this router I intend to build? (I didn't think it was necessary until I read 19.2.5 in the handbook - it doesn't seem like it's necessary based on that alone, but it has placed some doubt in my mind). 2. I currently run my FreeBSD router on a cable connection while waiting for the new ISP to get setup. I use NAT to translate the EXT. IP to the internal ones of my lan. I don't need to run nat for the setup I plan to have do I? 3. Finally, I've read (briefly thus far) about routed on FreeBSD. Would this daemon be used in such a way that I don't even need to add static routes for LAN? Again, this address is not subscribed, so please answer by putting my address in the cc: field. Hello, I have FreeBSD 4.8 installed on my 400mhz amd with 256mb ram (this is probably useless info) I was wondering how I install packages like emacs? are they on the CD? can I choose them from the install menu? the reason I ask is because I didn't see it listed in the install options but maybe I over looked it... sorry this is like 20 questions, but also normally when I used freebsd at work I and would be typing a path and I could hit tab and it would finish the path for me or tell me what file names are close/similar but when I hit tab on my FreeBSD box it just tabs spaces... I figured maybe I was using the wrong shell... if so how do I change shells? is this the problem? the reason I figured it was the wrong type of shell... is because del/delete doesn't backspace either, it gives me weird characters like ^something the delete/del problem might just be that is a rule my admin had set or something but I don't know so I'm not really concerned with that but if it helps to understand what I might be doing wrong then shout it out right? thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give -Mark Hillis- ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, Per the recommendation, I had the system administrators have removed the cover and cleanse the dust. They also noted an error with the server, it is as follows: The following error was printed on the screen, it appears the server utilized all the console buffer space making keyboard interaction impossible. vm_fault: pager read error, pid 1 (init) Does this mean anything to anyone? any suggestions? -Antonio === Sounds like hardware problems caused by overheating. Open the PC cover and blow out all the dust. Leave cover off and see if problem reoccurs. ---Original Message- [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm a newbie running FreeBSD (I believe it's 4.4... am at the moment unable to check, as the computer is down) to host some of my websites. I sent a query to this mailing list before about receiving some errors when trying to access my website, after which, ssh would stop logging me into the server (Connection closed by [server ip]), and all web pages would bring up a Forbidden error. After this, the server would go down completely... or at least I was unable to ping it, access it through http, or anything else that I tried... This has been happening regularly, about every 3-7 hours after the computer is rebooted. However, while the computer is running, I can distinguish nothing out of the ordinary. However, tonight, it crashed while i was logged in through ssh. Suddenly, almost every command that I issued or program I tried to run came back as Device not configured. e.g.: # reboot /sbin/reboot : Device not configured Some things work... (lynx, ping, ps -- all seem to work fine) but many other commands just return the Device not configured or Segmentation fault errors. Also very odd: ls, cd, pwd, etc. seem to work fine, but when I ls any directory, no files come up. It is completely blank Anyway, I'm very scared and at my wit's end. The system will appear normal once it's rebooted, but the same thing will happen within a few hours... Any suggestions on what to look for? Are there certain log files that may contain information on this? I think the most recent thing I did to the server was several weeks ago, when I installed wusage to analyze web logs... i had since deleted it. Maybe something went wrong there? I have also noticed two processes running that I hadn't seen before: 6 con Is+ 0:00.11 sh /etc/rc autoboot 447 con I+ 0:00.00 sh /etc/rc autoboot Errors when trying to access a php/mysql driven website Warning: open(/tmp/sess_4a23ba911863d07812e9cdf99656586f, O_RDWR) failed: Device not configured (6) in Warning: open(/tmp/sess_4a23ba911863d07812e9cdf99656586f, O_RDWR) failed: Device not configured (6) in Unknown on line 0 Warning: Failed to write session data (files). Hello, I work at Las Positas College as a Technical Mentor, in a work-based learning program called LaPTechS. Many of our students have expressed an interest in learning about Linux and Unix. I was wondering if it is possible for a representative from your organization to come speak at a seminar for our students. The students dont have a working knowledge of Linux or Unix but are very curious to learn. Our seminars are usually an hour long, but you can choose how long you would want to speak. We are mostly interested to know some of the history of Linux and Unix, and also how to install an OS like FreeBSD. Thank you for your time and consideration. Jez, Have you checked the integrity of the installation CD you're trying to install from? It could be that it's corrupted and causing problems. I did check the MD5 checksums -- but in addition to the CD install, I also tried a variety of other install methods - booting to CD and doing FTP install, booting to floppy and installing on a variety of different FTP servers. The installation process is usually fairly painless and generally very fast - as less than 5 minutes for a minimal install on an amd athlon 2000. Certainly shouldn't be taking as long as you mention :( Unfortunately, not painless or fast for me. :-( Presumably you've read the handbook as well: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install.html I've looked there and have become quite intimate with the menus it documents. I like to think I could go through the install options blind-folded at this point. :-) if you know enough to use Google you no doubt stumbled across the handbook pretty early on :=) Googling has brought to my attention that many other people have had this problem, and also have not seemed to have found answers, as I alluded to in the original post. One found that when switching from the CD to FTP install it worked; this did not work for me. I've installed 4.8 off CD onto a PII-200 w/ 80MB ram and two ide's, primary has 1GB, secondary has 2GB. Don't understand how to allocate /usr to the secondary ide or even give it more space on the primary, and I run out of room with only 1/4 GB for /usr to install most of the binaries. Would like for starters to allocate both those hd's to FreeBSD and have enough room to install Samba and see if I can then communicate over my LAN. Guess this alot, huh? Hi, I'm about to set up several identical machines (identical hardware both in terms of processor, harddisk, LAN etc.) with FreeBSD 4.9. The only difference between these machines is they're running under different IP-addresses - all the rest (kernel, software,...) should be identical. In order to keep installation effort at a minimum I'm looking for a way to clone FreeBSD installations from one machine to another. To be specific: o) Is there a way to clone one machine to another one over the net, i.e. by writing an image file from one machine to a server and then setting up the other machines from that image? o) Is there a way to clone FreeBSD installations by copying the entire FreeBSD slice to another drive (I thought about installing the harddisks of the other machines in the master machines and then copying the installtion) (Is Knoppix capable of doing this?) Anybody sucessfully tried cloning installations like this? Unfortunately, this isn't one of mine, so I can't claim credit ;) But when I try to mount it, I'm getting # mount -t msdos /dev/da0 /mnt msdosfs: /dev/da0: Invalid argument See if there is a slice for the device, e.g. /dev/da0s1. Also, you can try a fdisk on the device, in case it doesn't use the first slice (I've yet to see this on USB devices, but ZIP drives used to use slice 4 for their DOS partition). If you still can't get it to work, drop me a line, and I can try to provide some other pointers. On most devices, its a matter of tweaking the protocol settings in umass.c. Assumed I will get it working soon, how can I achieve that it is automatically mounted? Is there a user wrapper to mount/unmount the USB stick? You should be able to set something up in /etc/usbd.conf for attach. Detach may be a bit tricker, as you should unmount the filesystem before pulling the stick. -Brian ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello, I have been wrestling with my laptop for days now, and I'm not sure what to do. I wanted to put 5.1 on it, but booting from the CD failed. The boot halted at at line saying: agp0: Intel 82443BX (440 BX) host to PCI bridge mem 0-0x3ff at device 0.0 on pci0 After it was clear that the boot was not going to proceed, I cycled the power and the same thing happened repeatedly. I had an old 4.6.2 CD sitting around, so I installed that. I was happy that this worked and I proceeded to cvsup to the current version of 4.8 (no longer trying 5.x). After doing a make buildworld, buildkernel, installkernel, the system hangs-up on boot at the exact same line. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this? I would really like to get FreeBSD on this machine. :) tia Eric ___ ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm trying to install FreeBSD 5.0 on my Toshiba Portege 7010CT laptop (Pentium II, 300MHz, 160Meg RAM, 20G HDrive). 4.7 and 4.8 both installed fine, but I was unable to get X to install, and wanted some of the new features, so figured I'd try 5.0. No luck. No matter how I try it, I get the message Unable to transfer the bin distribution from media. The other distributions (doc, etc.) transfer just fine. I've tried the following: - downloaded and burned CDs from ISO images (downloaded twice, burned twice to make sure not a media problem); also tried 5.1 with the same result. - connect via ftp server I've booted from floppy or from the previously-installed 4.7/4.8 FreeBSD. I'm beginning to wonder if there's some incompatibility that I don't know about. Any suggestions? I've just started trying to use FreeBSD. Recently I've installed the version 5.1 of the FreeBSD. I added a new user with login 'davcav' in the 'wheel' group and also I added this user in the 'operator' group. In the new user login the commands 'shutdown -p now' and 'su' works but when I try to mount the floppy disk with the command 'mount_msdosfs /dev/fd0 /floppy' return the following message mount_msdosfs: /dev/fd0: Operation not permitted Somebody in the web suggest to use the 'su' command for mounting the device and read the data in the '/floppy' directory. Similar instruction are used for unmounting the device. Does exist a way for mounting directly the data from floppy (or CD) from a non-root user (in my case 'davcav' user) ? /Cavallini David ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ignoring SIGSEGV (was: no subject line)

Of course. What do you expect to happen? A SIGSEGV is an indication that the instruction being executed can't complete. Ignoring a signal means going back and continuing with that instruction. You'll get the SIGSEGV again. There are two things you can do with a SIGSEGV: 1. Stop it from happening. This is preferable. 2. Add a signal handler which performs some alternative function. For example, you might print out some information about the state of the program before terminating. Greg -- When replying to this message, please copy the original recipients. I'm trying to configure both a master and slave DNS on the same machine. My approach is to run the master by setting named_enable=YES and it will use the config file in /etc/named. To start the slave I will In rc.local and it would use the config files in /etc/named/slave. Does this seems ok? Is there a better way. This seems to come up every now and then. Before we start, is there any reason you want to have two seperate named process running, instead of having one process serving as master to some domains and slave to others? Like all of my action this is the result of a requirement. I'm required to run two by nametech to register it, They said they can even be on one box. In our configuaration, one machine faces the internet and there is a number of computers behind the firewall which use NAT. I would like to run the slave on a internal box but as the addresses are funky due to NAT. Cheers, Tony -- Kirk Strauser -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I have enabled the following devices in the kernel but still no luck. # SCSI peripherals device atapicam device scbus # SCSI bus (required) device ch # SCSI media changers device da # Direct Access (disks) device sa # Sequential Access (tape etc) device cd # CD device pass# Passthrough device (direct SCSI access) device ses # SCSI Environmental Services (and SAF-TE) Output of dmesg acd0: CD-RW Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer Plus 9100 at ata1-master PIO4 And I do not really want to use burncd if i could get cdrecord to work. Thanks! -- In the windoze world, I am limited by the tools that I can use, In Unix, I am limited by my own wisdom. ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

FreeBSD- I have a question about sysinstall. If i have 3 SCSI drives un-RAIDED and one IDE drive how will sysinstall give me an option of which drive to install on. Will there just be 4 unused partitions in the Fdisk partition editor? If so could i install FreeBSD on one of the drives and then RAID them all together with Vinum and expect all the hardrives to share the files (exept the IDE which will be used for something esle) or would i have to reconfigure the mount points? If i were to reinstall FreeBSD what steps would i have to take to make sure the RAID is still there? And also how does RAIDING through Vinum work? And also, are Travan type tape drives compadible with FreeBSD? Thanks in advance. ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I don't want to use any sorta webmail. You have 4 big choices as far as SMTP goes: 1) sendmail. The ubiquitous MTA; included w/FreeBSD; somewhat difficult to configure (though *much* better now than it once was); notoriously insecure (though still quite good), quite reliable. 2) Postfix. In ports; good alternative to Sendmail; probably the second most common MTA; simple to configure; secure but not bulletproof; reliable. 3) Exim. In ports; very similar to Sendmail (though much easier to configure); not as common as the others; secure but not bulletproof; reliable enough (I haven't used it, at least not for very long). 4) qmail. In ports; pretty much bulletproof (the author will give you $500 if you find an eexploitable hole); not much configuration to do; building it is a bit different (but the port helps you there); probably has the best support for the new Maildir format; quite unlike Sendmail in several ways; extremely reliable. My favorites: qmail, then Postfix, then Sendmail, then Exim. (I use qmail currently.) For POP, you could either use qmail-pop3d or qpopper. I'm sure there are others but those are good. (Note that qpopper 2.53 has some security bugs; make sure you use at least 3.0). -- Josh TIA -- Best regards, Chris __ PGP Fingerprint = D976 2575 D0B4 E4B0 45CC AA09 0F93 FF80 C01B C363 PGP Mail encouraged / preferred - keys available on common key servers __ 01010010011101100011011001010111001001011000 ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sorry, but this is probably a rudimentary question to some of you. I've created a list (using mailman) but when I do a python mailmanctl -u start as root I get a Warning! You may encounter permission problems. Site list is missing: mailman and it exits. I've tampered with this program for hours now, trying every possible combination. How do I get this friggin thing up and running?? I'm running FreeBSD 5.1 RELEASE. I'm ready to toss my GODDAMN BOX OUT THE FUCKING WINDOW! To put an end to it, KMAIL won't work, again, so I had to telnet into my port 25 to send this email... go figure ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Chris, It is one of the most common problems with initial setup of the SM. Check this out and find your error there: http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/en_US/SolvingProblems Regards, Denis Hello, Has anyone had any trouble with the ports version of SquirrelMail. I updated my mail ports yesterday and built cclient and IMAP-uw without ssl off. I verified this by logging in through telnet: * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4REV1 LOGIN-REFERRALS AUTH=LOGIN] ed IMAP4rev1 2003.337 at Tue, 8 Jul 2003 11:27:20 -0400 (EDT) 0001 login user password 0001 OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4REV1 IDLE NAMESPACE MAILBOX-REFERRALS BINARY SCAN SORT THREAD=REFERENCES THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT MULTIAPPEND] User user authenticated 0002 logout * BYE ed IMAP4rev1 server terminating connection 0002 OK LOGOUT completed Connection closed by foreign host. So now that I know IMAP and cclient work I moved on to Squirrelmail. It installed successfully but when I try to login with a user on the system I get: You must be logged in to access this page. I'm stuck on this one and would appreciate any help. I acctually tried the ports version and the latest version off of squirrelmail.org and I get the same thing. FreeBSD- I have a question related to the case on my computer. I have a Aspire X-Sonic shown at the link below. I was wondering if it would be possible to replace all the 5.25 CD-ROM size plastic pieces with one piece that would conceal all the drives behind it. The piece would be openable and all the drives would be behind it, almost like putting in a CD-ROM drive and leaving the plastic piece on, except i would be putting in all the drives and leaving one big plastic piece on. Another picture is also at the second link of a Dell PC with somewhat of what i am looking for. So the front would look relatively the same but the drives that are there in the picture would be replaced with some type of a door like mechanism. I would do this for the Floppy slots too, providing that it is possible. Do the make drive doors like that, or would it be a custom job. If it does have to be a custom job, how do you reccommend going about it? The short answer, however, is that you open port 22 for the IPs that you want to allow access. Before you do this, however, turn _OFF_ the firewall and make sure you can access via ssh. If not, then the firewall has nothing to do with your problem. I need these two computers to be SSH clients but i don't know how to make it work with the Firewall. Hello im trying to download a copy of unix from the site. i have got to: 2.13.1 Creating an installation CDROM As part of each release, the FreeBSD project makes available five CDROM images (``ISO images''). These images can be written (``burned'') to CDs if you have a CD writer, and then used to install FreeBSD. If you have a CD writer, and bandwidth is cheap, then this is the easiest way to install FreeBSD. Download the correct ISO images The ISO images for each release can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/ISO-IMAGES-arch/version or the closest mirror. Substitute arch and version as appropriate. That directory will normally contain the following images: Table 2-6. FreeBSD ISO image names and meanings Filename Contains version-mini.iso Everything you need to install FreeBSD. version-disc1.iso Everything you need to install FreeBSD, and as many additionalthird party packages as would fit on the disc. version-disc2.iso A ``live filesystem'', which is used in conjunction with the ``Repair'' facility in sysinstall. A copy of the FreeBSD CVS tree. As many additional third party packages as would fit on the disc. version-disc3.iso As many additional third party packages as would fit on the disc. version-disc4.iso As many additional third party packages as would fit on the disc. i wud like to dl version-disc1.iso but i odnt now which bit to use as a substitue for arch or version in the url. could you help? thankyou ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You are the only one that can do the chosing. You know whether you have a i386 (Intel or AMD), alpha, or etc. See ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/ISO-IMAGES-i386 Since you have problems at this point, it is probably safe to suggest that you deal with only the 4.x version. For starters, you only need to download the first iso. When you burn it onto a CD-ROM, you have to use the burn as an image option. All CD burners will do this. It is just difficult on some of them to find out how. Most of the ones I am familiar with will put you into the right spot if you double click the iso from a file manger.
