gramofile, mkisofs howto??

2002-12-17 Thread paulbeard
I am trying to digitize my old vinyl records and I am somehow missing
something along the way. I can make wav files from the records with
gramofile and from there, I can make an image with mkisofs, mount it
with vnconfig and play the wav files. I can even play the wav files on
a CD burned from that image.

But a CD player will not see the CD as usable. Is there some kind of
header I need to put on the image? I have R-ed the FM but no luck so
far. Surely I'm not the first person to try this?

An audio CD does *not* have a filesystem on it; you should not use
mkisofs to make an iso before you burn one. Instead, use something like

# burncd audio track1.wav track2.wav track3.wav fixate

Then you'll be set.

See also the handbook online, at

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/creating-cds.html

especially the 'Duplicating Audio CDs' part.

Hi Tracey (and others),

Thanks for the continued help. Ok, I did a tcpdump; like this:

"tcpdump host test-server.net and port 22"

This is what I get back on an UPLOAD:

drivers.flp?

2002-12-17 Thread David Boggs
I tried to install 5.0-DP2 and 5.0-RC1 from floppies using FTP.
The kernel on the floppy doesn't include a driver for DEC Tulip
Ethernet chips, so I'm stuck. The documentation mentions that
there is a new install floppy with extra device drivers on it,
but I can't find any documentation on how to use it.

Where is the documentation on how to use the drivers.flp floppy
during installation? Yes, I've read EARLY, ERRATA, HARDWARE,
INSTALL, README and RELNOTES, and I've searched the man pages,
and I've searched the mail archives.

/David Boggs

P.S.

I happened to have a motherboard with an Intel Ethernet chip on
it, and the install floppy has a driver for that chip. So I built
a system around it, and I'm making my 5.0-RC1 disk there, but I'd
still like to know how to use the driver floppy during installation
for the next time this happens.

You might not need to reinstall the server, but it's strongly advised

Re: Upload substantially slower than download

2002-12-17 Thread Stacey Roberts
Hi Mark,
   Thanks for the output.

If its an ftp transfer then please try specify the port number (21) and
re-run the test transfers.

One thing that has shown itself is the difference in window sizes
depending on the direction of the transfer:

UPLOAD (WinXP to FBSD?)
09:22:13.470561 test-server.net..ssh > 192.168.79.3.1845: . ack 3064209

DOWNLOAD (FreeBSD to WinXP?)

win
> 64240 (DF) test-server.net..ssh: P
3060397:3061289(892) ack 992 win 63760 (DF)

Dload:
?09:25:53.109400 192.168.79.3.1845 > test-server.net..ssh: . ack 7842077
win
64240 (DF)

To verify:
test-server.net is the FBSD box
192.168.79.3 is the WinXP box

On establishing an Uload connection during the (WInXP to FBSD) the max
window size is set to 63760, and for a Dload connection, this is
declared as 64240 - in practice, this need not, and isn't the case here.

Before leaping to uncertain conclusions at this point, I would ask that
you run tcpdump with options:
tcpdump ip host test-server.net and 192.168.79.3

The reason for my hesitation here, is the fact that that I would prefer
for someone more knowledgeable of FBSD's tcp control algorithms to
(hopefully shed some light on whether or not FBSD's stack throttles
throughput depending on direction.

This is something usually handled at the link layer (nic), but might
actually be configurable at the kernel level with sysctl.

In the mean time, see if its possible from WinXP to hard-set the MTU or
max window size at that end.

Regards,
Stacey

What would make you say that?

Weird, but `man cdrecord' doesn't tell me anything about what DAO/TAO actually

Dear Stacey,

Thank you for your excellent way of explaining the intricacies of tcpdump.
:)

Well, it showed nothing on port 21 -- I presume because data goes over port
22. But your remark is quite perceptive nonetheless, as I suddenly realized
I am not doing FTP; that is, not directy: SSH2 is doing FTP. So, I dropped
SecureFX out of SSH2 mode; and lo and behold, uploads are now around
~1800K/s! :) Rather peculiar; but a relief nonetheless, as, at least I know
the likelihood of having to deal with some spurious hardware problem has
decreased.

Hmm, is the packet-loss something I need to worry about? About a 0.14%
packet loss. Although I do not see why any packet should be lost (or are
they?), this can still not account for the discrepancy between ~1800K/s
upload vs. 2700K/s download. But I can live with speeds like that. :)

Thanks again for all your help, and to all others who contributed.

Heh, that might be the case with "other" MS OSes, but XP is pretty good
(it uses the nt installer, basically). The only problem I've had with an
XP/FreeBSD installation was down to a Dell powertools partition, which
XP carefully navigated, but the BSD installer didn't grok (the disk
contents appear to be shifted by 64 sectors) and trashed the partition
table. So your mileage, as they say, (and knee-jerk reactions to the
side), may vary.

The XP bootloader works fine for dual-booting BSD, incidentally. You'll
need a copy of the BSD boot code.

jan

PS. For what it's worth, XP boots fast, too :-) (25 seconds from poweron
to being logged in.)

make: use packages when installing ports

2002-12-17 Thread omax
I've got 4 CD of FreeBSD4.7

How can I know if program I want to install is in ports
or in pakages of my CDs?

I've copied all INDEX form /cdrom/pakages of each CD
and can know whether it in in pakages,
but when it is not I look in /ust/ports

The problem is:
when installing from ports
I don't want "make" to
fetch all required ports from the internet
if they are in packages in CDs.

How do I automate this process? (I've heard that I can use packages if
they are or should I install them manually)?
How do I know what ports/packages are required at all?

Mouse wheel configuration

2002-12-17 Thread omax
Hi all ,

I have PS/2 standart mouse
I am trying to configura mouse wheel as was described today.
This is my XF86Config section

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/sysmouse"
# Was earlier
#Option "Buttons" "5"

# Added
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

# Some other stuff
#Option "Protocol" "MouseSystems"
#Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
#Option "Device" "/dev/psm0"
#Option "Emulate3Buttons"
EndSection

Earlier I was using imwheel to enable scrolling
but it scrols all window rather then 3 lines of it (looks awful).

Where is my mistake? What am I doing wrong?
Please help!!!

The right config would be:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/sysmouse"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

But for this to work, you also need to put the following lines in your
/etc/rc.conf:
moused_type="auto"
moused_enable="YES"
-(reboot)-

> Where is my mistake? What am I doing wrong?

You may not have done both (?) ;-)

Bob,

It seems you added the -D option in the wrong place.

The bellow squid.sh works for me in a charm:

if [ -x ${PREFIX}/sbin/squid -a -f ${PREFIX}/etc/squid/squid.conf ];
then
(cd /${PREFIX}/squid/logs; ${PREFIX}/sbin/squid -D
>/dev/null 2>&1 &) ; echo -n ' squid'

;;
stop)
${PREFIX}/sbin/squid -k shutdown 2>&1
# Uncomment this if you'd like the system to (attempt to
# wait for) squid to shut down cleanly
#echo "Sleeping for 45 seconds to allow squid to shutdown.."

Hi all,
Marty Schlacter is obviously the man. I am following
his firewall tute religiously but I am doing something
wrong!
I have an ipf.rules EXACTLY like his. Works a
treat...but only if I remove the kernel
ipfilter_default_block option.
If it is in there...it blocks way too well.
Everything.
What is going on here or has Marty got it all wrong?

Are you using the 'quick' keyword? If you don't, ipf uses a last-match
checking, and the last rule is 'block all'

See the IPF HOWTO for details.

installing contrib

2002-12-17 Thread Graham Dresch
Can you put the option back into the Distributions section of sysinstall
which allows the installation of Contrib ?.
I would want to use this after the system is installed and configured.
( Or better still, any particular section of contrib. ie Sendmail )

this option was certainly present in the 4.2 release.

a better link speed would be fine, but perhaps that's not possible for
you to afford.

Try to add RAM to the machine and try to put a second SCSI Harddisk
for the squid-partition with soft updates enabled.

Yah, I shaved some stuff and lumped things together rather than
making it even longer and less comprehensible to the already confused
person. Besides, it was beginning to get beyond the details I am
totally clear about. I wish we could abandon MS (and MS oriented BOIS)

IIRC beowulf is kind of a compute cluster. From your description it
seems that you are looking for a distributed filesystem. Have a look at
the Coda filesystem or the intermezzo filesystem. But be warned: as I
looked at them about 18 months ago, they both were not production-ready.

ncplogin: Linux vs FreeBSD ...

2002-12-17 Thread Marc G. Fournier

We're still plugging away at getting this to work ... I haven't given up
on FreeBSD for this yet ...

Have a Linux guy here that's been helping to debug this, and one of the
question that he had was whether or not our ncplogin supports NDS ...
apparently, the ncplib we have in ports doesn't support it, while the one
that Linux uses does ...

We're able to get stuff like "ncplist" to work to list printers/servers,
we just can't authenticate/connect to the novell server(s) ...

We're running Novell 5.1 + NDS/eDirectory 8.5.12 ...

I don't think you need a ftphosts in this case. But I have no experience
with it. It seems the jail should give you all the hiding you'd want, and
that the jailed host doesn't account as a system that "has multiple IP
addresses".

I am intalling a server for a small company - a company I once worked for. A few
years ago, I moved their server from Windows 2000 to FreeBSD in order to save money
on licensing, etc. They were very impressed from the beginning, given that the
server was a Celeron EMachines (no joke, we were a new company and the goal was to
save cash) and there were few issues with this setup, instead of the monthly crashes
or other 'issues' with Win2000. All was well until I left the company. Nobody has
the time to learn FreeBSD and so updating and admin tasks are still left to me (I
now live across the country). They were thinking about moving back to Windows,
because they feel it would be easier for them to admin (they have more cash now so
licensing is less of an issue). I stopped them from doing so but am once again stuck
with the job of admin.

The short of it is that I want to be able to reinstall OpenSSH at any time, should a
vulnerability come out and it makes me nervous doing a build-/installworld from 3000
miles away. The server is also doing a lot more work now (Apache, MySQL, DNS,
ROUTING, etc.) and uptime is much more important.

Sure:

make installworld DESTDIR=/mnt

installs everything relative to /mnt instead of / --- see jail(8) for
some examples of doing just that.

Intel Ether Express Pro 100 vs WOL etc?

2002-12-17 Thread Stacey Roberts
Hi,
I've just picked up an Intel Ether Express Pro 100 card - chipset
I82559, with WOL MoBo cable included.

Does the fxp driver for this nic actually make use of any of the
seemingly "optimized for Windows" functionality:-
Advanced management capabilities help lower support costs
Wake on LAN* for remote system wake-up and troubleshooting
Intel® Boot Agent for remote PC deployment
Intel® PROSet II Utility for easy configuration

Not that I'm looking to do any of that, but its handy to know just
what's possible (or not).

Thanks

ftp xfer stalling at ~350MB

2002-12-17 Thread Nathan Kinkade
I have a friend who is trying to upload a large file across the Internet
to my 4.7-STABLE box, but the transfer keeps stalling in the
neighbourhood of 350MB. I'm using the default ftpd. My ftpd.log
doesn't really show much. However, it is interesting to note that just
after the transfer stops the log does show a failed ftp login attempt
from the remote host. The message on my friends side is something to
the effect of "connection closed by remote host." Another strange thing
is that long after the transfer has stopped I still show an active ftpd
process for the upload, as if my FreeBSD machine still thinks that
connection is up and is waiting for more data. The remote side is an MS
Win2000 box. He has tried uploading the file with two different ftp
clients with the same result. I have seem flaky ftp behaviour between
FreeBSD and MS Windows in the past, but I suppose that this could be an
issue with my Cisco 678 CPE. Has anyone seen anything like this, or
have any ideas about where to start looking?

Thanks!

You might want to run tcpdump on the FreeBSD end to see if the reasons
for the "connection closed by remote host" message at the Win2K box.

The LAN boot funtionality should work, but you will probably have to use
etherboot. I had this going recently and used a combination of
etherboot and Intel's bootagent software. Although, since the bootagent
software only wants to upload it's own code to the EEPROM on the card, I
had to create the boot code with etherboot and then somewhat trick
Intel's bootagent program to upload it to the card. One other note is
that I had to use Intel's old bootagent software. The new version would
cause DOS to crash, and I had to search around to find the old program.
I can't speak for the other features, but I thought I'd chime in on this
one at least.

Are There any Free Tools to do Remote SQL Queries?

2002-12-17 Thread Martin McCormick
We may need to make sql queries to a Microsoft server
from a FreeBSD system. I am in an area of which I am totally
unfamiliar and there is a bit of a time factor involved.

The object is to retrieve text files containing the
results of the query so that scripts can be generated based upon
the information. That, I can handle. The problem is in figuring
out the best way to access the MS server from here.

Many thanks.

This is TDS protocol library (CTlib/DBlib) that is used to connect to
Microsoft and Sybase SQL servers. This can be used instead of native
libraries, that are shipped with commercial products.

Presuming you want the whole new drive for FreeBSD and want it
bootable, you are on the right track.

You might want to use the -I switch and the typical location for
the boot0 is in /boot/boot0, though ./boot0 works if you are in the
right directory.

So try: fdisk -I -B -b /boot/boot0 ad2

Looks like that will give you a 73GB FreeBSD slice OK - probably a
nominally 80 GB drive.

There are a couple of perl modules to interface with MS-SQL. You can try them,
if you're willing to write some code.

Re: Dual booting FreeBSD 4.7 and Windows XP

2002-12-17 Thread Shantanu Mahajan
+++ Mike McGranahan [freebsd] [16/12/02 05:06 -0800]:
| Hello,
|
| I would like to know what is the best way to dual boot FreeBSD 4.7 and
| Windows XP? I found this information (
| http://www.geocrawler.com/mail/msg.php3?msg_id=7963936&list=151 ) regarding
| how to use the Windows XP loader, and this information on GRUB (
| http://www.gnu.org/manual/grub/html_node/Booting.html#Booting ) though there
| is no mention of Windows XP.
|
| I have two hard drives in my system, a 20GB which currently has Windows XP,
| and a 10GB which is empty. I was considering making the 10GB drive common
| storage for both OS' as FAT32. I would then move my data from the 20GB
| drive to the 10GB, partition the 20GB drive and install FreeBSD alongside
| Windows XP. Besides setting up the bootloader, would there be any FreeBSD
| problems with this configuration? In what ways could I set up dual-booting
| for this configuration, and which method is best?
|
| Alternately, I could just install FreeBSD on the 10GB drive, leaving the
| 20GB/Windows XP drive untouched. In what ways can I set up dual-booting for
| this alternate configuration, and which method is best?
|
| Are there any online documents that address this, or would be insightful?
|
| Thank you for you help.
|
| Mike McGranahan
|
| Worst case scenario, I could use the alter the BIOS to control which drive
| boots.

Try to look in /etc/defaults/rc.conf variables that can be in /etc/rc.conf

for ex. if you need some tunnings about firewall - do something like this:
grep -i fire /etc/defaults/rc.conf >> /etc/rc.conf

Nope, doesn't work at all. I've got a dual boot system with Windows, and
it works fine if I boot windows, however can't seem to get the rascal to
work at all in FreeBSDv4.5. Based on dmesg however, the port that the
mouse is on is not being addressed in the Xconfigurator. As the USB
ports are addressed and configured upon boot it identifys the mouse
perfectly.

MD5 Mismatch in 4.7

2002-12-17 Thread Carl J

Hi! The 4.7-disc1.iso on the FTP server seems
to contain files that have the same name but
different contents than if I download the
sub files individually from the FTP server!

1. I downloaded the ISO image (4.7-disc1.iso)
  from ftp.freebsd.org (62.243.72.50),
  from /pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/4.7.
Inside the ISO, "info.aa"'s MD5 checksum
  is 11b65e24bafee38149d92dc8d7252e66.

2. But when I went to ftp.freebsd.org (62.243.72.50)
  again, and download "info.aa" from
  /pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.7-RELEASE/info,
  its MD5 checksum is different:
  62825b4516f3226168eb92f144e9f579

(I verified that my ISO download was not corrupted,
because its MD5 6b205e3c2e72c90c2e0718da47b26540
matches the CHECKSUM.MD5 file on FTP server.)

(I verified that my info.aa download was also
not corruptted, because its MD5 matches the
CHECKSUM.MD5 file in that directory.)

[If it was only one file, I would not have inquired.
But it appears to affect all compat*, info*,
manpages*, etc.] It almost appears as if there
are two different FreeBSD 4.7.

Could someone enlighten me please?

Thanks

I think you want -b /boot/boot0 there.
You are trying to initialize ad2, not read a file from it.
Presumably, since it is a new disk and you are 'I' initializing
it, there is nothing on it to read.

That -b /boot/boot0tells it where to get the file that it will
put in to the boot sector. Actually /boot/boot0 is the default but I
believe but I tend to want to be explicit in these things. You don't
want to specify any other file here unless you are trying to put in
some special home brew or third party boot sector.

If you can't read it from /boot/boot0 because the disk is corrupt
then you will have to get a boot CD or a set of boot floppies for
FreeBSD to do it with. By the way, the 'I' switch presumes
you are using FreeBSD 4.xsomething as it wasn't available in earlier
versions of fdisk.

Try doing an:fdisk -v ad2
after it is done and see if what it puts out looks good.

Then you will have to start on disklabel
which will be followed by a newfs for each partition you create
with disklabel.

xl0 bridge

2002-12-17 Thread Edmond Baroud
Hi all,

I had installed vmware 2.x on my 4.5-RELEASE with bridged networking,
but now that I have upgraded to 4.7-STABLE I seem to have problems
setting up the bridge on the interface.
I have noticed a slight change in /etc/sysctl.conf where in the old
version I had the command sysctl in front of every value that I wanted
to set, now the file should only contain the value right?
anyways, when I do:
sysctl net.link.ether.bridge_cfg=xl0:0,vmnet1:0
sysctl net.link.ether.bridge=1

my network connection just drops, I cant reach my router anymore.
any changes in bridging?

thanks,

Ed.

to redirect stderr to /dev/null u can do:

It's ok. it's better than following this windoze hype that you always
have to run the latest version. It makes the quality of an OS, that you
dont have always to run the latest release. How many sites are still
running Solaris 2.6?

Thanks both of you, I now "solved" that problem by deleting possible plugin
paths for libjavaplugin_oji.so in /usr/local/bin/opera. As you said, quite
dirty, I hope this will be repaired someday, when someone over there at Opera
Software finds the time or so :)

I recommend using the mode bits for users with some or no experience
with modes, its easier to memorize..
chmod u-x /your/dir
this will remove the execution bit for the user of /your/dir
chmod gu-x will remove it for both the user and the group
chmod gou-x will remove it for everyone, ie: group, others and user.

man chmod

*rtfm* ;)

I'm bored...

cdrdao toc-files/gcdmaster [was Re: gramofile, mkisofs howto??]

2002-12-17 Thread paul beard
It looks like what I need to use to make audio CDs that look like
the ones I can buy (ie, you insert into a Cd drive and the name of
the CD shows up as a mountpoint) is cdrdao. I don't see any
options for cdrecord to write a volume label.

The port of cdrdao doesn't have the UI (gcdmaster) so I'll need to
be making the necessary toc-files by hand. Has anyone done this?
Any pointers?

Backspace key under gnometerminal

2002-12-17 Thread Scott Ballantyne
How does one get consistant behavior of the backspace key in emacs and
gnometerm? I've fed xmodmap

remove Lock = Caps_Lock
remove Control = Control_L
keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock
keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
add Lock = Caps_Lock
add Control = Control_L
keysym BackSpace = Delete

and then

echo "XTerm*ttyModes: erase " | xrdb -merge

which has worked for me in other unices and is documented in the
xmodmap man page for freebsd, but no joy. It doesn't work for xterm
either :-(

Running 4.7-RELEASE for i386.

Thanks in advance,

So what's in that ipf.rules file? I'm sorry if this is a naive

not easy to tell what's wrong with a series of rules without seeing

What's your internal interface? what's your external one? Is this box
acting as a router? are you using user ppp or mpd? How many NICs does
this box have?

It seems to me that your ruleset is incomplete. Send the output of a
'ifconfig -a' after the ppp link is set up (when you got the public IP)

if you are using user ppp, the outside interface is tun0, *not* ed0
if that is the case, change ed0 into tun0 in the rules, reload
and tell me if that works

Thanks. It works now. But why did it work the other way in the past,
and then suddenly stop working?

compact flash use

2002-12-17 Thread randall ehren
hi,
i was testing out a compact flash to ide adapter for use in a freebsd box. it
seems that the device will not work when the disk is formatted with UFS or
whatever the default type freebsd uses.

i have tested the adapter under windows xp and formatted the card as fat32.
all went well. i then rebooted back to freebsd and was able to use the card
just fine when i mounted it using mount_msdos. but after reformatting to UFS
the card failed to work.

once formatted i am able to mount the card just fine. i can create files on
it and even make directories. but when i go to copy a bunch of files to it
using cpio, cp, or cpdup (from ports) it does the following:

ad3: timeout waiting for DRQ - resetting
 ata1: resetting devices..

the machine is then pretty much frozen for a good 15 minutes, then it resumes
operation but the CF device cannot be used again. i can't even do simple
operations on it like mkdir.

 the converter i have is:
http://www.idot.com/TheStore/Desktop/687Spec.asp?Product.id=687&Cate.id=11&Product.status=green

and i have tried both a type I (8meg) and type II (320meg) card.

any ideas as to why it functions just fine when formatted as fat32 but not
UFS?

 thanks much,
 -randall

maybe your friend can use curl to upload that file instead?
curl also has a feature to resume a transfer at a given offset.

should be able to find windoze binaries at google.

Sounds like just what you said you wanted.

By the way, I notice that you have quit CC-ing the questions list.
You should keep that in so it gets in archives and so I don't become

If I have a bit of extra money, I will replace the cards for 3Com. :) Any
specific type you recommend? Mine was just a simple Edimax card -- it seemed
harmless enough at the time. Guess not.

Thanks.

Look at the cdrdao docs. man cdrdao has a section explaining the format
of the toc files. If that fails, you can try searching the cdrdao
mailing lists and project's web page.

Best way to scale SMTP auth?

2002-12-17 Thread Steven Lake
Hi. Got a slight problem. I'd like to do an SMTP system that
allows up to 100 users a second to authenticate to the system using the
simplest means possible. I'd like to use the Pop before SMTP method over
authentication before SMTP. However from my understanding, it doesn't
scale very well. So I'm trying to find a way to make this be able to
handle as much traffic as possible without overloading the existing
system. Thanks.

Yeah, I've read those. They didn't help. Wading through the (to
me) cryptic file format for this is joyless and it's made more os
by the knowledge there is a UI that ships with this but isn't in
ports.

I was hoping someone who had used cdrdao would chime in.
