Re: [Freedos-user] LiveCD could not find Kernel
Hi Alain you stated: * I googled a lot on this subject: it seems that it is not possible to boot from a CD when you are in grub. I have successfully booted floppy, changed active partition from grub and even swap disks in such a way that WinXP boots from the second disk... I have already tested that using the tab key in grub ignores the CD, so if you only get hd0,0 it is because there is only on disk with only one partition. *** Your interpretation of what I was observing makes tons of sense. I have knocked my head against the wall on this and have to say you must be right on this one. The live CD's are not just using the grub with an initrd and a kernel. They have to have a big work around on this one. Thanks so much for your posting. I have been trying to do what can't be done the way I was doing it. I just have to find some other way of accomplishing my CD Boot. In SUSE Linux in their administrative documentation they talk about using grub and the CD boot. I think that their documentation has a serious problem because they say to label the cd as root. As you distinctly stated and my working with grub demonstrated the CD isn't recognized even thought that is where the grub is. Thanks so much for your interpretaton. Re: [Freedos-user] LiveCD could not find Kernel
My Isolinux "buildcd" folder is 7/13/2006. My "Data" folder is 9/5/2006. I examined the "index of files" on the ftp site and the latest file was 9/5/2006. When I use grub from my various cd booting attempts I have been putting in "root (hd" followed by the tab key. It only completes with (hd0,0). I think that is my computer and not the cd. Since you don't seem to be getting this error again after you changed the isolinux could it be something peculiar about my computer? I downloaded again from the ftp site and even did a md5sum check. It still hung up at the same point Ed ** This message might be generated by ISOLINUX: We use this boot loader to load "memdisk" which is loaded as if it were a Linux kernel, and which gets a (in our case compressed) diskette image as "initrd". The memdisk is a bootable ramdisk from which we boot FreeDOS and load cdrom drivers to access the rest of the LiveCD... The menu item for DOS in our isolinux.cfg file is "fdos", the disk image is fdboot.img. When you boot the image, you would get messages about kernel sys (or maybe metakern) but not about a file called "fdos", which is why I guess that you have a problem with the isolinux step... Did you make sure to use the "remastered" 1.0 ISO of FreeDOS? Unfortunately, we had an ISO with bad ISOLINUX configuration online for months. It just failed to boot on many BIOSes... [Freedos-user] LiveCD could not find Kernel
I looked at FreeDos because I am trying to boot SUSE Linux 10.3 from a non bootable USB hard drive which I am presently accessing with INSTLUX. I don't want to do anything to my computer's hard drive. I put the LiveCD in, and booted the computer. On trying to boot I got the message "could not find kernel image: FDOS." [Freedos-user] Possibility of floppy installer for FreeDOS?
Hi all, I would like to suggest, if not already available, that the base package of FreeDOS be made available as a set of floppy disc images as well as just a CD. I for one have an old machine I'm messing about with which has no CD drive installed (though possibly could do if it has the right interface (IDE?)) Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS on an old machine
Hi Finally, I reinstalled FreeDOS, and now it works fine. First, I installed Smart Boot Manager on a floppy, and than I put a floppy drive to this old computer. And I put my dvd reader drive to this too. Than I was able to boot FreeDOS CD, that was burned to a cd-rw. I think the problem was that the hdd in the old computer has 504M place, but in my computer the hdd had 520M. So thanks for the help! [Freedos-user] FreeDOS on an old machine
Hi! I have an old computer and I installed FreeDOS on it. The computer has a 486dx processor, 16M ram, and an 520M hdd. The installation was on my another computer, and on it FreeDOS booted and worked well. I installed just the base, but without base's packages. So i have 3 files in C:\, a command.com, a kernel.sys and a FDOS\install.log. Nothing else. And it can work, I tested it in qemu and on my "new" computer. When I'm booting FreeDOS, it writes "Starting FreeDOS", then nothing happens. Previously, the OS was DOS 6.22 on this old machine, and it worked well. So could you help me? Thanks for the answers. Re: [Freedos-user] trouble with russian-named files
Hi, (1) You'll need to use COUNTRY= setting with an unstable kernel version (in the future stable one). (2) You also have to make sure that the codepage mkeyb works with is the same you have configured with DISPLAY (or alternatively use FD-KEYB and forget about aligning codepages, as this will work transparent to user). (3) In the future, when NLSFUNC gets finished, you would just load NLSFUNC, DISPLAY and FD-KEYB and automatically switch the codepage at once at your wish with: CHCP xxx (DISPLAY, FD-KEYB, MODE are under development almost finished, NLSFUNC will need a bit more work I assume). Re: [Freedos-user] Soundblaster setup
An Aptiva, makes much more sense now why you have mwave. :-) Most likely you are experiencing one of two problems (or both), either the drivers are not quite compatible with your particular mwave card or they are not quite compatible with the FreeDOS kernel. >From http://freedos.sourceforge.net/laptops/ibm/760e.html we know that at least the mwave drivers present in some thinkpads are compatible with the FD kernel, it may simply be the wrong driver; however there is note of a particular setup portion for mwave not functioning (sadly no details) so perhaps you are seeing a related issue. [Hopefully not, but it may also indicate a compatibility regression.] You may want to compare your config/autoexec with the ones listed here, I suspect the needed statements for mwave support will be similar on an Aptiva. If you have access to a MS/PC boot disk, you may want to try running the mwave setup from there to see if that helps (once setup it may run fine with the FD kernel). Please let me know if everything works when booting this but not FD or if once installed (using MS/PC kernel) it works for FD kernel. If you provide me with which model Aptiva you have, it might help me to ensure you have the proper drivers. thanks, Jeremy -- Original Message - Subject: Re: [Freedos-user] Soundblaster setup Date: Sun, 9 Oct 2005 10:52:33 +0200 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net ..(my PC is also an IBM Aptiva), but after reboot I've got the following error message: "MCB chain setup failed (or something like that), or MS-DOS incompatible system". [Freedos-user] ANNOUNCE: FD-KEYB 2.0 pre-release 3
Hi, I'd like to announce the new pre-release of FreeDOS KEYB 2.0, implementing a lot of new features to ease operation. A brief changelog respect to the pre-release 2: + ADD: Support for libraries of data files (libraries of KL files), that contain information for more than one layout. These files are similar in function to Microsoft's KEYBOARD.SYS, but tend to be smaller because contain pure data. So you can have now 100% commandline compatiblity, as you do KEYB GR,,C:\FDOS\BIN\KEYBOARD.SYS to load a German keyboard layout (which has codepage support). Furthermore, you need the new library or KL files created with the tools released some days ago. + CHANGE: if you do not specify a data file, then KEYBOARD.SYS is sought, both in $PATH and in the same folder as KEYB.EXE. For example, by placing Henrique's KEYBOARD.SYS in the same folder as KEYB.EXE you can just do KEYB GR (remember that the codepage can also be omitted, and if you have DISPLAY loaded, the codepage will be asked to DISPLAY.SYS and you don't have to worry about that; thus you never get odd characters printed on screen) + ADD: The keyboard data is now automatically loaded into separate Memory Blocks. This allows KEYB to load and replace layouts without unloading KEYB. That is, if you now do KEYB FR then you change your layout to French, without problems and not leaving rubbish. The data is loaded on a new Memory Block, by default an UMB. + ADD: If you don't want the data to be loaded in UMBs, but in convenctional memory, then you use the switch /NOHI. For example: KEYB IT /NOHI + ADD: There is a new switch, /V (Verbose), used to display more verbose information on loading time, including the manufacturer and description of the library data files, if you use one. + ADD: There is now extra support for Japanese keyboards, which can be optionally loaded from the data file (that you should compile with an special flag). With this falg, FD-KEYB emulates Microsoft's KEYB for Japanese MS-DOS. Notice that, although Japanese KEYB (FD and MS) operate byte-wise, Japanese users will also need to make use of a FEP (Front-End Processor) software to fully operate in Japan. Thus, if anyone knows of an open-source FEP, we would be very grateful to add it to the FreeDOS distribution, that could then happily launch to Japan, too. Note that this cannot be applied to Korean or Chinese, that would need keyboard drivers to produce two characters. FD-KEYB could do this by using Strings, but this would be a hard work. However I imagine that Henrique would gladly accept such Chinese/Korean layouts. And regarding FD-KEYB, any hints on how to easily get Korean or Chinese support would be welcome. Japanese support is optionally loaded. If you don't make use of it, it won't stay in memory, and your memory footprint won't grow. + FIX: The information about currently loaded layout is displayed when no layout name is given, even if other switches are used. + FIX: KEYB /I crashed without a layout name. + FIX: /ID:nnn needs not be capital letters + FIX: Minor cosmetic changes to the /? help screen You can get the driver from here: Binary: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/keyb/kb2pre3x.zip Source: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/keyb/kb2pre3s.zip If there is someone here also subscribed to FreeDOS/V or mailing lists for FreeDOS in Japanese if he or she could please forward this mail to those lists, in case there are Japanese users interested in this news. There is only a known bug that may cause some miliseconds delay if you use STRINGS, as Interrupt 9h is hooked even on AT class keyboards. This has very low impact, not only because 99% of the users won't use STRINGS, but because it will still work. It will be fixed in the next release. However, there are two interactions with other bugs in other programs that are worth to note. (1) A bug in the external LOADHI program will not allow FD-KEYB to load high. To prevent this you are suggested to use FreeCOM's internal LH program (2) A possible bug in FreeCOM+XMSSwap makes FreeCOM crash when FD-KEYB loads its data into UMBs. I was unable to test this myself (because I am on holidays), but this is yet to be investigated a bit more, but this does not apparently happen under MS-DOS. If you suffer from this, please make use of the /NOHI option of FD-KEYB so that the keyb data is loaded to convenctional memory. Thanks in advance for feedback and bug reports, and happy keyboard operating! [Freedos-user] Announce: New version of KC (KEYB compiler) and introducing KLIB (KEYB librarian)
Hi, I'd like to announce the new version of the tools you use to create customized keyboard layouts for FD-KEYB: KC 2.0: Compiles the layouts created in the "natural" KEY language into a KL file, useable by KEYB KLIB 1.0: Used to group KL files into libraries (e.g. KEYBOARD.SYS) of KL files. So there won't be the need to have several separate KL files any longer, but a single KEYBOARD.SYS file. Then KL files created by KC 2.0 are slightly different from those created by the KC 1.X series, but the changes in the KEY files are small: re-sort the data section ascending by codepage and re-compile. In order to use the so-created KL files, or to pack them with KLIB, or in order to use the libraries, you'll need the forthcomming KEYB 2.0 pre-release 3. It will be released tomorrow. Changelog for KC: - ADD: KL files can implement a flag to request KEYB to load the Japanese extensions (required to operate KEYB in Japan) - CHANGE: Scancodes in KEYS: sections have to be sorted ascending by scancode - FIX: A minor problem with the FLAGS= option - FIX: KC now returns error codes as exit code: same number for syntax error, and 100+same number for critical error. 0 is SUCCCESS - REMOVE: KL files are no longer allowed to request KEYB to chain interrupt 9h About KLIB: With KLIB you can CREATE a new library, where you specify the manufacturer name and a brief description (they can also be specified in the commandline). Then you can list, add or remove KL files to the library. Finaly you may want to "close" the library, making it read-only and no longer editable. You can check the error status in the exit code.
