[Freedos-user] USB Drive Formatting

2011-09-26 Thread Arthur N. Dunning III
I am planning to install FreeDOS to an old Seagate disk drive that I
converted to a USB drive by installing it into a Vantec NexStar3
NST-360U2-BK hard drive enclosure.

As part of this installation process, I would like to format this
USB-converted drive, but when I select that option, I get the following
message:

WARNING: ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK
DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! PLEASE CONFIRM!
Proceed with format (YES/NO)?

While I could easily choose to do so, I am concerned that I might end up
erasing the wrong Drive C, i.e. the hard drive where my Linux
installation is located. What I want to know is ... is this message
referring to my USB-converted drive or the hard drive where my Linux
installation is located?

What partitions are on it? Did you set the HD jumper appropriately for the
NexStar before putting it in?

Option from where? What installation process? Normal procedure to format is
to specify which drive to format, such as FORMAT C: /S.

While I could easily choose to do so, I am concerned that I might end up
erasing the wrong Drive C, i.e. the hard drive where my Linux

What does FDISK tell you about available partitions? You can't format
partitions that don't exist or that the OS does not see. Just because you put
a HD in a USB enclosure doesn't mean the OS found the device or any
partitions it may have on it.

The NexStar I have is pretty good at being ignored by the operating systems
I've tried to use it with.

A: Ubuntu 11.04 recognized my drive when I simply plugged it into one of
my USB ports, but thanks for the information just the same.

But you are not using Format in Ubuntu, you're trying to use it in
FreeDOS and that simply does know squat about USB attached hard drives...

No worries on that score, Ralf. I got it all straightened out. I
installed the other version of FreeDOS (fdbasews.iso) using 'UNetbootin'
and got much better results. FreeDOS is now successfully installed on my
USB drive with no apparent complications.

On that note, I'd like to thank you and Felix for the information you
gave me on this matter. It was very helpful. :)
