Does nayone have any experience between these two:

1. Mercury Extreme G4/1.2GHz w/2MB L3 Cache. (I'm not sure the correct
model#)
2. sonnet encore st g4 1200/2m (SG4-1200-2M)

macuser, I thank you for your time.
But you see I got this G4 Powermac as a hand me down.
The two processors I mentioned on my last link were mentioned for a
reason,
and that is because they are old processors and they can be found
anywhere from $60-100. I need another 512mb stick and I will have
1.5gigs of ram,
and I already run 2 firewire 400 drives (320gigx2)

You can't compare the savings I'm after,

I had a Mercury Extreme 1.5GHz in my old Sawtooth, and had absolutely no
problems. I ran a Sonnet G4 upgrade in my old Beige G3 and that too, was OK -
but there were one or two issues regarding booting from CD/DVD (i.e. CMD+C
didn't work) but I think those issues were specific to the G3 ZIF upgrades.

Re: Apple G4 CPU upgrade options

2009-08-26 Thread Mac User #330250

Hello Ted!

Now that you mention it - I had the original CD drive from my Gigabit Ethernet
replaced with a used DVD drive from an old PC that was laying around in my
cellar. The original CD drive was broken, so I had no choice really.

Since the replacement DVD drive wasn't originally Apple, I wasn't quite sure.
But I was also unable to boot a CD or DVD holding the CMD+C keys.

So there is a slight possibility that the CPU upgrade has something to do with
it.

But I'm not sure. Sorry that I cannot say more.

Cheers,

Re: Apple G4 CPU upgrade options

2009-08-26 Thread Mac User #330250

Hello d p!

I was just saying that it might be a better choice to get a used QuickSilver
or Mirrored Drive Doors and use one of those instead.

Anything you can put into a Sawtooth/Gigabit Ethernet/Digital Audio will also
fit into a QuickSilver/MDD - with the advantage of an overall better
performance. Only with RAM you would have to check. The MDD uses different
RAM than all predecessors, but the Quicksilver can also use 100 MHz RAM (at
least mine does, QS 2001 733 MHz, now Dual-800 MHz) from Sawtooth and Gigabit
Ethernet.

I've seen a 933 MHz Quicksilver go for less than $75 USD on eBay. The Dual
models are a little bit more expensive.

But you're right, I don't know what you're up to. If you are eger to invest
$60 to $100 in a CPU upgrade card for 1.2 GHz, you could go for either one.

 1. Mercury Extreme G4/1.2GHz w/2MB L3 Cache. (I'm not sure the correct
 model#)
I've looked at the OWC pages and the OWC item number is OWCMEG42M1200.
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/MEG42M1200/

 2. sonnet encore st g4 1200/2m (SG4-1200-2M)
Never used a Sonnet Encore. Anyway I've also heard only good about it. (But:
no jumpers, and check if you have to update the firmware in any way...)

Left with only the choice to upgrade you could go with any one of the two you
mentioned. Generally speaking. If you gather more information about the
Sonnet you will be able to decide more precisely what you want.

Please report back what you do - might interest some more people here.

Cheers,
Andreas aka Mac User #330250

Ok.  Just tried it.  Yea, yer right - there's a bug it's in Dock;
just cosmetic tho.

OnyX (or Deeper if using a non-admin account) disables Dashboard,
kills its processes, and restarts the Dock - like it should. But the
Dock keeps the arrow on the Dashboard icon. (You can see with
Activity Monitor that the Dashboard processes are gone). Just grab
that icon and poof it off the Dock.

To re-enable Dashboard, check the box in OnyX. It will do its thing
and restart the Dock. Then you need to manually launch Dashboard.app
and manually drag its icon onto the Dock.

Re: Apple G4 CPU upgrade options

2009-08-26 Thread Mac User #330250

Correct.

I was not clear enough. I referred to HDDs, PCI cards, AGP graphics cards, and
computer peripheral equipment (everthing that is external).

I stated though that RAM is different for the MDD.
Up to the Quicksilver you can use the 100 MHz RAM from the Sawtooth, although
133 MHz RAM is benefiting from the 133 MHz system bus speed.

CPUs are a completely different story, as you always have to look carefully.
You're right, most CPU upgrades are for Sawtooth to Quicksilver only. MDD CPU
upgrades are specific for the MDD (and MDD/FW800) only.

Sorry for the misleading information,

Yes, if it's big enough. Make sure you re-initialize it as HFS+

The sawtooth accommodates two hard drives without modification
(although it needs to be 128 GB if it's installed on the internal
ATA bus).

Once the new drive is installed you can use an application like Carbon
Copy Cloner or Super Duper to clone the old drive to the new.

Yes, if it's big enough.  Make sure you re-initialize it as HFS+
Journaled, case insensative, first tho, so you don't corrupt the
Mac's file system when you make the backup.  Most such devices are
 FAT (PC) formatted originally.

 Will it boot from it?

Um I think Sawtooth can boot from a USB device.  So then it
probably would boot from a flash drive.  Bruce?  Someone? yes?

This works in iMovie 09, Don't know about 5.

Save your movie. It'll be .m4v.
Launch iDVDIgnore the project window.
Go to Menu Bar File OneStep DVD from Movie
In the window that opens, select your movie.
Click on Import, then Insert a blank DVD

Only problem is I don't know how or if you can name the DVD. It defaults to
something like OneStep DVD

Well, my first advice was based on your incomplete first post; if you
have a lot of space already, you can move your user directory to free
up space without adding a new drive.

So what I said covers different circumstances; a good reason to let us

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to do the copying - either the whole drive or
just your /Users tree - up to you - whatever the flash drive will
hold.

CCC is much more reliable than drag'n'drop copying, and it will copy
everything - even the invisible files - which can be quite important
when it comes ot your preferences and such.

 Ok.  Just tried it.  Yea, yer right - there's a bug it's in Dock;
 just cosmetic tho.

OnyX (or Deeper if using a non-admin account) disables Dashboard,
kills its processes, and restarts the Dock - like it should.  But the

I didn't see it mentioned, but if you just happen to have access to

Dear William Connelly 11:
This is in response to your report of August 17, 2009 alleging that
(Mom's Name Correctly OCRd) may be a
victim of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Your report to this agency
complies with Section 63.2-
1606 of the Code of Virginia that requires the reporting of suspected
abuse, neglect, or
exploitation of certain adults to the Lynchburg Department of Social
Services.
The investigation has been completed, and at this time, there is not a
preponderance of evidence
that Catherine Connelly is in need of protective services. Since
situations of vulnerable adults can
change rapidly, your continued assistance in identifying and referring
adults whom you suspect
may be victims of abuse, neglect, or exploitation would be appreciated.
Thank you for your report and for your interest in the safety and well-
being of vulnerable adults.
Sincerely,
Social Worker
