And just one more viewpoint:
Why not buy another Radeon 9000 and spend the savings on maxing out
the DA’s RAM?
I’m not sure if the DA is faster than the MDD in actual practice,
though. The processor isn’t that much faster, and the bus speed is
slower.
I think you’ve got two pretty equal machines there.

At the moment, I’m trying to figure out which of these two is faster:
a 466 DA or a 2x500 GigE. I took the video card and HD from the DA to
the GigE to really find out.
It’s similar to your situation--at a lower level--because the GigE has
a slower system bus and a faster processor. And you know what? I
hardly notice any difference, if at all.

MDD G4 Power Supply variations

2010-10-07 Thread James Morgan
I have a pair of Dual 1.25 MHz MDD G4's which have been my graphics
workhorses since I bought them new. Recently the power supplies
failed on them both within a few days of each other. I removed the
power supplies and was surprised to find that the power supply in the
first computer I bought is an AcBel 400 Watt Rev B and the power
supply in the second one I bought a few months later is an AcBel 360
Watt Rev A.

Does anyone know why Apple used two different power supplies in two
virtually identical G4's? Or which one is the better power supply?
Did they have problems with the 360 W and replace it with the equally
undependable 400 W?

These AcBel power supplies were made in China. Doing a little
reading I quickly discovered that Apple had problems with them
immediately.

There is an online service, National Ram Electronics, that repairs
the AcBel G4 power supplies. Does anyone know if these bits of
Chinese junk are worth repairing?

Were the Macs purchased and put into service at the same time too?

Two supplies gaking together is very strange - look upstream in your
power chain for a blown surge protector, floating ground, etc. Don't
just ignore this problem; other devices could be at risk!

Apple didn't do anything other than give the contractor the specs
from which to build the machine. That contractor probably ran out of
the one supply and substituted another. Or perhaps the one with the
bigger supply was built with video or extra HDs that required it?
Could be many reasons. Either way, 40W is no big deal.

Unless the repair is very simple and inexpensive, I'd just replace 'em.

Re: Video card advice for MDD and/or Digital Audio

2010-10-07 Thread Dan Knight, LowEndMac.com
Thanks for all the input!

I did some serious testing and benchmarking when I got the dual 1.8
GHz G4 upgrade, and I never got it to run reliably beyond 1.6 GHz. I
benchmarked at 1.53 GHz using Geekbench (CPU and memory tess), and it
was 27% faster than the dual 1 GHz MDD under Tiger, 19% faster under
Leopard. 1.6 GHz is just 4.5% faster than 1.53 GHz, so a 1.25 GHz MDD
would probably provide equal performance overall under Leopard,
although it would take a 1.42 GHz MDD/FW800 to match Tiger
performance.

http://lowendmac.com/reviews/09rev/giga-1.8-ghz-dual.html

The ideal would be a pair of 1.42 GHz FireWire 800 models with maximum
RAM.

Based on all the feedback, I'm leaning toward another Radeon 9000 Pro
for the MDD and bumping RAM in the DA from 1.25 MB to 1.5 MB. I may
also look for used 1.25 GHz and 1.42 GHz models. Craigslist can have
some great deals! (I got my 22 Cinema Display with a Quicksilver 867
MHz for $175 through Craigslist, then sold the Quicksilver for $100. I
love this display!)

Thanks again!

Try a hard reset: Disconnect all unnecessary peripherals and

pressing the CUDA button ONCE -- *or* removing the PRAM Battery for

I put in new battery backups to address the possibilities you raised.

Some have suggested that the 400 W power supply was brought out as a
quieter system to address G4 noise complaints?

I am considering scrapping these G4's because used power supplies on
eBay are costing close to $150.00 with shipping. These power supplies
have a poor service record and a used one is a risky investment. I
presume that new ones are going to cost more than the G4's are worth?
National Ram Electronics will repair G4 power supplies for $90.00

service.

Mine is a Power Mac G3 BW 350 MHz PCI
1.0 GB SDRAM

 3 HD, 1 CD-ROM
1 HD, 1 CD-ROM

USB Ports have 5 USB sticks, a Memory Card and my Olmpus Digital Camera
plugged into them (see below for detail) plus the KB
I use a USB 2.0 PCI card in addition to the two USB 1.x ports. The keyboard is
connected to one USB 1.x port, the mouse is connected to the second USB 1.x
board.

Back of the Mac has a port which has 1 card plus the Olypus. Also has a
cord to a non-Powered Hub. This has a Powered Hub plugged into it. (I need
a 5V cord to power this thing and cannot find one)
I have a powered hub connected to one USB 2.0 port of the USB PCI card. The
power cable is not plugged into the hub though for reasons … read on!

Powered Hub has 2 USB Sticks plugged into it,

KP has the Memory Card and my Logitech USB Mouse
My hub has an external 2.5 hard disk plugged into it or a memory sick or two
or three…

PROBLEM: First off, this NEVER happens when I use the machine

When I am away it randomly shuts down.
It is NOT set to sleep under Energy Saver

Under System Preferences I see nothing about shutting down
My PROBLEM: The Power Mac doesn't even start when I press the button IF the
hub is connected to its 5V external power unit. If I unplug it, it starts just
fine (with a chime…).

Now, I blew out (with me providing the air) what little dust was inside (I
will get a new can of air today) and under the tower.
I did that too.

What else can I do? I have not had this problem until recently (never with
the Smurf or previous machines, some of which had many more HDs hooked up
 (externally but same power strip)
No idea. When it comes to USB stuff some computers act just strangely. I had a
laptop that rebooted reproducibly if I touchted the USB port with an external
USB device – must have shorted some circuit or something. No damage done, just
lost all unsaved files :-(

But if you find something: I'm interested too!

I know that was no help at all… Sorry.

Cheers,

Well, this only happens when I am not using it.
Any way to check (that does not involve paying someone)?

I am looking for a nice multi-tip power cord so I can plug in the other hub.
Walmart used to sell them but the only ones they sell now are for use in

When it does power on, do you hear the self-test completed bong,
or perhaps individual beeps or an odd chord?

Try a hard reset: Disconnect all unnecessary peripherals and
cards. Unplug the computer. Reset the Power Manager (PMU) by
pressing the CUDA button ONCE -- *or* removing the PRAM Battery
for a minute then reinstalling it. Then plug the computer in,
wait about 10 secs, then try booting it. If that still fails to
boot, then try zapping the PRAM (hold down cmd-opt-p-r while
booting).

PS. I posted a topic in the G-Books group about AirPort on this
iBook, but still have no replies, I'd appreciate it if someone
would give me some help.

I didn't receive that post and I'm too lazy to go into the web

Googlehole. Try re-posting.

Can MDD PSUs be replaced with a common ATX PSU with nothing more than a

My MDD G4's also only shut down when I was not using them. But after
a while they began to occasionally refuse to start. Got a glowing
light in the start button when I pushed it but no start. This
progressed to no starting at all. The shutting down on it's own was
the beginning of the end.

I went through guilt trips. I thought maybe I had not kept the G4's
clean enough and had overheated them. Ect. Then I found out the power
supply in the MDD G4's have issues and it wasn't my fault.

I don't know of any way to check to see if it is a failing power
supply but I certainly recommend that you back up your entire
computer to an external hard drive. And start watching for a good
used power supply.

Walmart used to sell them but the only ones they sell now are for

it to see the main HD (as the start-up HD I do believe)

As for a new PS, I'd have no idea how to install one.

Squirt some WD-40 on the switch and it might magically start
working again.

Naw, it's the microprocessor on the board. I checked for continuity

the board and the MB, but I have no easy way to check that.

I'm totally guessing here but if it is indeed a DP, and not a DC,
running one CPU at 2.0 GHz and the other at a different speed would not
be my first choice of 'fixes.'

I would think that a replacement single core 2.0 GHz would be the safest
way to go, maybe someone with more experience can elaborate on your options.
