Re: Using SATA and IDE drives in same G4 Macintosh

2018-02-06 Thread William Tomcanin
Thanks for the replies everyone. The Addonics converter has a
floppy-to-IDE power adapter plug included. Now that I was able to get a
working Leopard system installed on the SSD, everything seems to be working
fine - at least for the past 36 hours :-)

I'm still at a loss to understand why the Mac OS X 10.4 DVD Installer
recognized the drive, but the Mac OS X 10.5 Installer doesn't.

In any case, since cloning the system from my HDD to the new SSD, Leopard
is working.

Using SATA and IDE drives in same G4 Macintosh

2018-02-03 Thread William Tomcanin
Does anyone have experience with having both and IDE and SATA (via
SATA-to-IDE adapter) installed in the same G4 Macintosh?

I currently have two rotational drives, one with Tiger installed, the other
with Leopard on my G4 2002 Quicksilver. The Leopard drive is beginning to
should "yellow" SMART indicators, and I'd like to replace it with an SSD.

Is this possible to have an IDE and SATA drives on the same cable (with
adapter, of course)? If so, does it matter which is set to master/slave?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Re: Quicksilver 2002 Optical Drive Replacement

2017-09-12 Thread William Tomcanin
Just a brief update... I gave up on trying to get the the Pioneer optical
drive to work again -- I got it to work for about 1 day, then the same
problem. I won't recognized discs (CDs or DVDs) that it played immediately
after cleaning the previous day.

The LG unit works well, although the ADDONICS IDE/SATA adapter that shipped
with it doesn't allow the unit to write CDs or DVDs.

Overall, I'm pleased with the replacement. I don't know if it's worth it
to try and find an adapter that would restore the ability to burn discs.

Re: Quicksilver 2002 Optical Drive Replacement

2017-08-21 Thread William Tomcanin
Thanks, Bruce.

I am about to purchase an LG drive from OWC (with an SATA-IDE/ATAPI
converter). I realize that I will likely loose write capability, but I
think that is a function of the adapter that is coming with the product.

I'm in the process of researching other adapters that might allow me to
write with the appropriate S/W.

Quicksilver 2002 Optical Drive Replacement

2017-08-21 Thread William Tomcanin
Hello everyone,

My 15-year old original Pioneer optical drive has failed completely. I
removed it took it apart, cleaned it which brought it back to life for
about one day. Today it refuses to read anything!

Time to replace it and I am wondering what folks are using these days.

I've been to the OWC site and see some options for newer drives, but they
only function as CD/DVD-rom when connected internally with appropriate
adapters. I can live with that, but would appreciate any recommendations
from the group.

thanks in advance,
Bill

I currently use the G4 to run legacy S/W -- I guess it's more of a hobby

I do have a lot of audio and photo files on it, as well as some legacy PPC

Re: Replacement for Quicksilver G4 Superdrive

2015-04-20 Thread William Tomcanin
Has anyone manually cleaned the laser lens on their DVD drive? I'm tempted
at this point to remove the drive, take it apart and attempt to clean it
manually until a replacement arrives.

I understand that the lenses on the original Pioneer 103 DVR drives must be
immaculate in order for them to work properly.

Replacement for Quicksilver G4 Superdrive

Hello all,

As the subject line implies, the Superdrive in my trusty Quicksilver will
no longer read DVDs. CDs appear to read ok, although burning is becoming
problematic (50-50 chance of success).

Can anyone suggest a replacement?

Thanks in advance,

Re: ios7 growing pains

Jeff,

Have you encountered any problems with iTunes 11 or WiFi with your setup?

I am seriously considering doing the same thing. Recently I lost the use of my
G4 iMac due to a blown power supply, and my G3 PowerBook (CPU).

I'm looking for something that can support my two iPhones running iOS 7.

Re: G4 Quicksilver 2002

2013-03-20 Thread William Tomcanin
Thanks for the responses everyone.

I confirmed that the noise was coming from the CPU cooling fan.

I removed it, removed the label, applied about 5 small drops of 3-in-1 oil
to the bearing and worked it in until the fan blades were able to move
freely.

I replaced the unit, and it is much, much quieter now (it sounded like a
field of crickets before).

I'll go ahead and purchase a replacement.

Re: G4 Quicksilver 2002

2013-03-17 Thread William Tomcanin
Hello G4 users,

My 2002 Quicksilver is starting to make some noise associated with the CPU
cooling fan (as far as I can isolate it).

Can anyone share experiences re: replacing this fan?

Is it fairly easy to remove, replace and/or repair (i.e., lube?)

Thanks,

Re: Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002

2012-07-07 Thread William Tomcanin
... an update.

My replacement fan is in transit, but in the interim I disassembled the
power supply and removed the old fan - a bit of a challenge due to the
tight fit and various items glued to its case.

I removed the label carefully drilled a small hole (1/16") into the hub
(there was no removable cap under the label), and fed several small drops
of 3-in-1 machine oil into the hole.

After manually rotating the fan for several minutes, the fins rotated
easily. I sealed the hole with black electrical tape, replaced the hub
sticker, and reassembled the power supply.

The fan started up, is much quieter, and is really pumping out the air.

I hope that this will keep me in business until I can replace the fan with
the new one.

Thanks to everyone for your advice and comments.

Re: Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002

Thanks, everyone.

I've bought a StarTech.com 80x25mm Dual Ball Bearing Computer Case Fan
(rated at >32 cfm) that I'm going to use to replace the PSU fan. Hopefully
the ball bearing will last longer than the sleeve bearings that I think are
used the existing fan.

Incidentally, since I last gave the existing fan a good "flip" to get it
started, it has continued to spin, although I think at lower rpm.

In any event, it's coming out soon.

Re: Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002

2012-06-30 Thread William Tomcanin
Thanks everyone!

After some cleaning and further investigation, I discovered that the power
supply fan is binding. I had to "flip" it a few times with a toothpick in
order to get it moving, albeit rather slowly.

I suspect that this is driving the internal temperature too high, and is
resulting in the other fans running at higher speed.

It looks as if I will need to either replace the fan or power supply soon.

I know that you replaced your fan, Peter, has anyone replaced the full PSU?
If so, how difficult is it?

Thanks,
Bill

Re: Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002

2012-06-27 Thread William Tomcanin
Thanks, peter.

The one thing I didn't do was to clean the actual fan blades. I will do
that immediately.

The noise doesn't appear to be a "whine" that I normally associate with
bearing wear, but seems to be more of a noticeable "whirring".

If additional cleaning doesn't improve the situation, I'll start looking
for a replacement fan.

Thanks again,
Bill

Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002

2012-06-27 Thread William Tomcanin
Hi everyone,

Recently I've noticed he fan on my Quicksilver G4 has been making much more
noise than usual.

I periodically clean the dust out of the interior and the ventilation
ports, but the noise persists..

Can anyone recommend a course of action? lubrication? replacement?

Thanks,
Bill

Source of spare parts for G3 / G4?

2012-04-30 Thread William Tomcanin
Hello all,

I'm wondering where I can find spare / replacement parts for my aging G3's
and G4.

I am searching for a replacement power supply for my G3 "gooseneck" iMac.
I also need some replacement parts for my G3 "Lombard" powerbook.

Can anyone recommend some sources?

Thanks!

G4 Quicksilver Sleep Settings - Mac OS X 10.5.8

2012-02-06 Thread William Tomcanin
Hi all,

I'm curious as to what folks are using for the following system preferences:

System Sleep
Disk Sleep
Display Sleep

I'm currently putting my display to sleep after 30 min., but never allowing
the computer nor hard drives to sleep.

Since I leave my computer running 24 x 7, I'm wondering if I should be also
putting the system and disks to sleep as well.

Thanks!

Re: Are powermac g4 still useful?

2012-01-06 Thread William Tomcanin
I have used my 2002 Quicksilver G4 (867 MHz, Mac OS X 10.5.8) everyday for
about the past 9 years.

It does everything I need -- e-mail, web browsing, music, video and
photography.

I use NeoOffice as my document processor, presentation maker, and for
spreadsheets.

I am quite happy with it!
